I remember reading about this years back and thinking how sad it was that he had this built for Loni, their son, and himself to be buried in...only to have it abandoned after their divorce and his bankruptcy. I had no clue it had room for 18 bodies...I wonder who else he thought would be buried there?
A lot of dirty little secrets.

And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is BURT, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level asphalt stretches far away.

He must have had the hardest old age. His ego became so ridiculously oversized in the 70s and early 80s, and then it all came crashing down.

Burt could do a lot of things, but manage money was not one of them. Where money was concerned he was impetuous, foolhardy, reckless, and just plain stupid. He was one of those people who acted as if money was growing on trees and it would never stop. Loni Anderson was the same way. When he was married to her she was spending his money like a drunken sailor. But for her he might have never gone into bankruptcy. That bitch almost wiped him out with her out of control spending then her outlandish demands when they divorced. The other problem he had were all the hangers on who crowded around him for many years he'd shell out money on. He had a big gay contingent of people in the business as part of his posse, from both the acting side and the crew side. And sadly many of them were only around for the perks. When the perks stopped they moved on to another patsy.
This was one of his impetuous buys. He bought this huge mansion in Loganville, Ga. once and I doubt he and Loni stayed there more than a few weeks.

Burt was allegedly only worth $5 million at the time of his death. He dodged estate taxes by setting up a trust for his 30 year-old adopted son Quinton (who had BDF, btw).

Did he fuck her before they were married?
This reminds me of Priscilla Presley's memoir. After she had Elvis's kid, he wouldn't have sex with her anymore. He an extreme version of the madonna/whore issue. (I realise that wouldn't be Burt's problem.)

by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 3, 2021 8:42 PM |
Has there yet been a tell-all biography of Burt Reynolds? He was, with Clint Eastwood, the biggest male movie star in the US in the late 70s, so I would think there would be an audience for it. But maybe they're waiting until Loni dies.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 3, 2021 8:54 PM |
One dumb thing celebrities like Reynolds and Nic Cage do with money is to buy multiple houses, thinking it's a good real estate investment and that they'll use them all in the meantime.
The thing is that they're usually poor investments because you need a staff to keep them up, and unless you have reasons to be in multiple cities they won't use more than two of them most often. Moreover, something like that huge white elephant at r17 is ridiculous. If you could afford something like that in the Atlanta suburbs you'd want something very up to date inside--and why would you want all that acreage around it?

The well-respected photographer Francesco Scavullo took the photos for the Cosmo spread. He took many full-frontal nudes of Reynolds during the shoot. Reynolds gave permission to Helen Gurely Brown to run a full-frontal photo, but he withdrew it when his agent told him it would ruin his career.
Considering the amount of success he actually had, a few silly movies and tv shows, would it have mattered?

Burt was very partial to the stunt man milieu. He had several male lovers from that arena. He was like Rock Hudson. He only took manly men to his bed, and the straighter they came off the better he liked them. He did keep some nelly queens around for their comedy value though. Dom DeLuise was his head court jester and pretty much the only one he allowed the public to see him with because Dom was married and had kids. But anyone who ever saw Dom's wife knew exactly what that set up was all about. MAJOR BULL DYKEAGE with that woman.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 6, 2021 2:44 AM |
"Where money was concerned he was impetuous, foolhardy, reckless, and just plain stupid."
It didn't help that he married a woman who bought everything "in triplicate": gowns, diamonds, cars, houses. Marrying Loni Anderson was the biggest mistake he ever made in his life. I wonder why he married her? Because she was blonde and had big tits? Surely he could have found somebody like that who DIDN'T spend money like it was growing on trees. And why in hell did they adopt a child? Because they thought it would be good publicity? She used the fact that they had a child, albeit an adopted one, to get though a loophole in their prenup agreement. I think she was draining him of money until the day he died. She was a relentless gold digger.

For years he dated Dinah Shore who was 20 years older than him, for pete's sake. That's classic closet case activity, just like John Travolta, when he was little more than a kid, dating Diana Hyland who was 19-20 years older than him.

Not an uncommon thing at all....
Cemeteries all over USA and Europe have crypts, mausoleums and even burial plots that were built or purchased and never used.
Often someone buys a plot or plots, builds a mausoleum or whatever but then decides (or family makes decision) person's remains will be buried elsewhere. That is if the cemetary is in Queens, NY and person moved to Florida or California that is often where they may be buried instead of sending body back to New York. More so if none of immediate family still lives in area.
Other times a man may buy enough burial space for himself, wife and each child (along with maybe their spouses). But again things happen and plans change; maybe the husband and wife end up buried or interred, but children have moved away and have no intention of having their remains sent back.

[quote] Cemeteries all over USA and Europe have crypts, mausoleums and even burial plots that were built or purchased and never used.
This is true. I have in my files about 6 or 7 very old deeds to burial plots in Calvary Cemetery in Queens that were purchased by my great-grandfather in the 1890s and 1900s. Apparently he bought them to help out friends and relatives who did not have the funds when a husband or wife died. But then no one else was interred in the plots. I have no idea what to do with the deeds, as I am certainly not going to be buried in any of those plots.

R81, couldn't you sell them? My grandfather bought a cemetery plot that would fit x8, thinking his children would want to be buried there. 70+ years after he bought it, only he and my grandmother are buried there. I have an aunt and her husband who will most likely be buried there, but my mother has said--quite literally--that over her dead body will she be buried there. If I dropped dead tomorrow, I'd like to be buried there (if not cremated), but it won't be my decision to make at that point.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | February 6, 2021 2:44 PM |
R81 I have the same situation. I have deeds to about six family plots in a cemetery in a small town. I inquired about selling them and they told me essentially the plot was worth what it was bought for in the early 1900s, which was like twenty bucks. Then they would turn around and sell it for today’s going rate, which could be a couple thousand.
