Not to seem Western-centric, but I lived in China for a time and they have the market cornered on "Foods I don't understand why people like."
I DO understand they have a long history of famines, though, and perhaps eating odd things is rooted in necessity, not desire.
Never was I more grateful to be a vegetarian.

I'll try to limit this to 'new' or recently popular items.
1) Riced cauliflower - I've tried it several times. No - it's not a decent substitute for rice. It's got nothing to offer. When did rice become something to avoid?
2) The brussel sprouts invasion into every menu. They're OK, but 8 halved brussel sprouts that are usually overcooked with some charring on them and some parmesan cheese on top - this is not delicious and not worth a $10 appetizer.
3) Cauliflower 'steak'.
4) Veggie puffs or crisps. They're not THAT much healthier than regular snacks. Just use portion control of regular tasty snacks.
I do like cauliflower-based pizzas though.

I always thought black licorice was flavored with anise, but it turns out there’s more to it (according to Wikipedia).
“Liquorice (British English) or licorice (American English) (/ˈlɪkərɪʃ, -ɪs/ LIK-ər-is(h))[1] is a confection usually flavoured and coloured black with the extract of the roots of the liquorice plant Glycyrrhiza glabra. A wide variety of liquorice sweets are produced around the world. In North America, black liquorice is distinguished from similar confectionery varieties that are not flavoured and coloured black with liquorice extract but commonly manufactured in the form of chewy ropes or tubes. So called "black liquorice" together with anise extract is also a widespread flavour in other forms of confectionery such as jellybeans.”

I used to eat Grape Nuts in the 80’s, right out of the box dry. Just a small handful at a time. I loved how hard, hearty and crunchy they were. Like a small snack. They always gave me an energy boost. Quite yummy like that.
Eating them like cereal in a bowl with milk was too exhausting and the moist texture ruined it. IMO

Mushrooms. Of any kind. I cannot wrap my head why anyone would willingly put these things in food and eat them, when the option exists to leave the out and NOT eat them. They are vile, disgusting, and taste at best like dirt. They make me gag. The very SMELL of them makes me gag.
What a far superior place this world would be if all our food was free from contamination by mushrooms.

I don't drink much soda any more, but when I do, it's more likely to be Dr Pepper than anything else. So ODD to have so much hate for Dr Pepper that it's literally the first thing come screaming into this thread with. I don't think I've ever met anyone who doesn't like it.

Grape nuts in ice cream is so good. It cuts against the sweet and give it a little crunch/texture.

Question for the anti-mayo people: What do you put on sandwiches so they aren’t dry? Butter? Mustard?
I wish I hated mayo. I like it slathered liberally on sandwiches, but it gives me acid reflux.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 30, 2021 6:48 PM |
Sweet pickle relish or sweetened pickles. I never understood this combo. The vinegar tartness of the pickled cucumber is enough. Sugar added is just a bad combination, to me.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | January 30, 2021 6:52 PM |
What have I told you about "slather," r77?
by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 30, 2021 6:55 PM |
R78 I always felt a similar way about sugary alcohol drinks like daiquiris or things with crusty sugar on the rim. Alcohol with fermented sugar already in it (like wine) is fine, but cocktails with large amounts of sugar added are a drag. A cocktail shouldn’t be like a dessert. It’s like something made for kids. The sugar rush (and quick comedown) seems to cancel and ruin the “high” of the alcohol. I go right to sleep, messy sleep.

Canned andvplain sardines or mackerel. I love them if canned in tomato sauce with some chili, not so briny.

Some raw fish is wonderful. I've been making poke bowls with Ahi tuna. It's so tender, it cuts like butter. And tastes delicious with the soy, sesame oil, and rice wine vinegar.

It (the chili) seems pretty harmless. If I lived in Cincinnati for over a year, I would have tried it at least one time.

R77- I am a vegetarian so I really don't eat sandwiches anyway. I like peanut butter and jelly. :)
R95- And in my mind, I don't see how people eat mayo- This has been since I was old enough to talk.
The look of it, the smell of it, the IDEA of what it is- It makes me wretch. I cannot even watch people EAT mayo- I gag.
I am no food saint. I have an addiction to barbecue sauce. I can eat barbecue sauce on ANYTHING. My favorite is Lily's. (Lillies?)
I don't know how people can eat ketchup, mayo, or even mustard- I hate them all.
Put on barbecue sauce! lol
by Anonymous | reply 98 | January 30, 2021 8:42 PM |
Holy shit , I was thinking about what I DID put on sandwiches when I ate them back in the day. (I have been a vegetarian for 10 years now)
I would eat turkey sandwiches often, and I would put barbecue sauce on those too!!!! It was delicious!
by Anonymous | reply 99 | January 30, 2021 8:45 PM |
R97, dipping fries isn't "low class" (hell, KETCHUP is low-class!)... it's very European. Specifically The Netherlands/Belgium, and that area.
"Aioli" is just flavored mayo. And it's VERY high class. All the fanciest restaurants have it.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | January 30, 2021 8:53 PM |
[quote]And tastes delicious with the soy, sesame oil, and rice wine vinegar.
With all of that stuff on it, are you really tasting the fish, or just the condiments? Anything that has to be covered up with so much other stuff must not taste very good on its own.

by Anonymous | reply 105 | January 30, 2021 8:58 PM |
I really don't _GET_ people who hate mayo. What's to hate? IT brings out the flavor of almost anything, and adds moistness where needed (like sandwiches). It's creamy, it's tangy, and it compliments most everything.
More than that, it's the base of so many things... egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, potato salad, macaroni salad....

Now that I haven’t eaten meat in decades, I don’t understand how people can eat poultry. It smells like rancid farts. And I was someone who LOVED Thanksgiving dinner!
Milk has always disgusted me.
On the flip side, I now totally get why people have cranberry sauce/dressing. When you get a quality jar of it (not that weird canned stuff) or even better, make it yourself, it’s lovely with the Thanksgiving sides.

Before you olive haters completely give up on olives, try some Castelvetrano Olives—meaty, mild and less briny. I eat them straight out of the jar.

I cannot watch people eat Sushi or raw anything..

R136 = You type Jewish.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | January 30, 2021 9:42 PM |
R140- Nope. Catholic and Irish/Italian. Now living like a buddhist monk.
Its funny, I like finger foods. And I remember some line of Cher's in that movie Mermaids.
I do like little platters of "treats" like her Jewish Character.
Sometimes dinner is a plate with Sun Chips, Almonds, String Cheese, raisins, and a dollop of peanut butter.
I am on a peanut butter KICK these days.

LOL I love Grape Nuts. If you warm it in the microwave and throw two teaspoons of sugar on it, it tastes great. But I completely get why people don't get it and I do feel like an old man eating it.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | January 30, 2021 9:47 PM |
Cauliflower
Vagina
Brussel Sprouts
by Anonymous | reply 143 | January 30, 2021 9:48 PM |
I hate cream cheese

[quote]I too go ballistic when they add Mayo
You are upset about a sandwich spread? My what fancy establishments you dine at. Next time tell the head waiter you would like to speak with the Chef.
Mayo is just oil, eggs, lemon juice and salt whipped into an emulsion.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | January 30, 2021 9:49 PM |
R142, Have you ever had Grapenuts Custard/Pudding?
Oh my god. So good. I have not had it in 20 years. I was probably 22/23 and in college.
I looked up a recipe around Christmas. It looked like a pain in the ASS to make.
Oh shit. I DESPISE CAULIFLOWER. And vaginas do make me wretch. Especially when they are all spread open. They look like raw meat.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | January 30, 2021 9:49 PM |
Not to totally derail this thread. It's such a weird coincidence that Grape Nuts is getting so much attention.
After not eating it for YEARS, a few weeks ago I had a hankering, but could not find them anywhere at my local grocery store. And then on this thread I saw the post of there being a shortage of Grape Nuts cereal.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | January 30, 2021 9:51 PM |
R147, no I never heard of that but now I am fascinated! I will need to try Grapenuts Custard. Cauliflower only tastes good in "rice" form. I hate the vegetable itself when it 's in a vegetable mix, boiled, steamed, etc. It ruins almost everything.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | January 30, 2021 9:52 PM |
Rotisserie Chicken--disgusting. Like chicken slathered with slime. Stick to fried chicken instead, at least it tastes fucking good.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | January 30, 2021 9:53 PM |
Well this fucking thread is going to make me go find this!
(My supermarket no longer has the Grapenuts Ice Cream, but it is still being made!)
by Anonymous | reply 151 | January 30, 2021 9:53 PM |
This thread has been eye-opening, I had no idea there were so many grape nut products out there. I always thought most people considered it an old man cereal, I had no idea anyone else liked it but me.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | January 30, 2021 9:55 PM |
Asparagus
Broccoli
Brussels Sprouts
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Kale
All came from the same fucking plant. The GMO of our early ancestors.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | January 30, 2021 9:57 PM |
R149- I bought a pizza once because it said "Oprah" recommended it-
It turns out it had the cauliflower crust.
When I really read the label, I said FUCK THAT and hucked it!
Cauliflower SUCKS. And it has that distinct taste and plastic texture. Fuck. That.
I used to get sent to bed early for not eating that shit. And broccoli makes me vomit. Those little spriglly things make me gag.
This thread is giving me flashbacks.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | January 30, 2021 9:57 PM |
R 152- It has a wonderful texture and works with creamy desserts. I am now obsessed with finding that ice cream and making that custard.
As far as a bowl of cereal? No. Just No. It is very, very dry, bland, and almost medicinal.
I do like that Kashi Cinnamon Harvest.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | January 30, 2021 9:59 PM |
Passive aggressive vegetables annoy me - turnips, daikon, bell pepper.
Also, I pick up the vomit taste in milk chocolate, adobo, most chili sauces.

Grape Nuts are VERY high in sodium.

A grilled cheese sandwich made with mayo is better than with butter.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | January 30, 2021 10:04 PM |
Hmmmm. Maybe that saltiness (that I hate by itself) is why Grapenuts tastes so good against a sweet flavor?
by Anonymous | reply 159 | January 30, 2021 10:04 PM |
Jesus Christ R158. NO!!!!!!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 160 | January 30, 2021 10:04 PM |
R154, I feel that people who hate cauliflower usually hate broccoli too. I hate cauliflower but love broccoli.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | January 30, 2021 10:13 PM |
LETTUCE--the filler vegetable of all vegeetables. It's like people don't know what to do so they just add lettuce to things. I hate lettuce in cheeseburgers!
Asparagus--it really depends on how it's cooked, it's hit or miss. It also makes sperm tastes terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | January 30, 2021 10:20 PM |
Cauliflower has no taste to me so I use it as filler in stir fry, usually diced. I also like it lightly roasted so it is firm with curry powder. I will eat that as a snack.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | January 30, 2021 10:34 PM |
Kale.
Which I swear was invented by the woke.

Most American barbeque sauces have WAY TOO MUCH sugar and/or corn syrup.
It's like trying to turn beef/pork/chicken into a dessert. Nasty.

I always thought I hated BBQ because I grew up in the midwest with that McDonalds notion of what BBQ Sauce is supposed to taste like. It's so gross and disgusting.
I moved to texas, and ... wow. Night and day. Texas BBQ sauce is amazing. Not sweet. And none of that gross chemically fake smoke flavor.
Rudy's BBQ sauce is the best, but Poke-E-Joe's is great too.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | January 31, 2021 1:49 AM |
In general I don't care for cheesecake BUT once in a while I buy piece or two of strawberry cheesecake from the Manhattan Diner on the Upper West side of Manhattan that's SO GOOD. It's not too cheesecakey, it moist and yummy.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | January 31, 2021 1:50 AM |
I always thought I hated rye bread until I realized that it's just the caraway seeds I hate. My mom made me some rye bread without caraway seeds, and it was great.
I'm not a fan of anything in that flavor family... caraway, anise, fennel.... blech.

(R146) Mayo is just oil, eggs, lemon juice and salt
Oil, eggs and salt. Yechhh. Just whip that glop up and plunk it in the frying pan. Mayo is disgusting. Can’t stand the stench.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | January 31, 2021 2:13 AM |
I don't eat mayonnaise in years. I've been buying Veganaise since 2014. It tastes perfectly fine. I don't miss mayonnaise.

Me, too, R175. Which kind do you like?
Fun fact: did you know it's pronounced "Veh-jeh-naise," not "Vegan-aise"? It's been around since before veganism was well known.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | January 31, 2021 2:28 AM |
Here's why mayo was gross to me. When I was little, I saw mayo in a jar and thought it was going to be sweet like whipped cream or frosting. Tasted it and was really disappointed & disgusted.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | January 31, 2021 2:30 AM |
R178- Follow Your Heart. I buy a full size glass jar of it. In fact tomorrow's lunch will have it. I making a tofurky sandwich with lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese ( maybe) on a corn tortilla.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | January 31, 2021 2:59 AM |
R175 I love Veganaise! I wouldn’t mind a Tofurkey sandwich right now....
by Anonymous | reply 181 | January 31, 2021 3:11 AM |
yum, yes, with lots of lettuce. I love that fresh crunch.
R180, thanks. I meant what variety of Vegenaise--there are so many now. Regular, avocado oil, grapeseed oil? I don't detect that much difference among them, but I've tried the reduced fat and don't recommend it at all.

R189, yes, I'm over that now (mayo), but I dislike it on different grounds now. I like it in stuff like potato salad, egg salad, etc. I know people love it on everything, including French fries. I don't like to yuck someone else's yum. I just prefer mustard as a sandwich condiment.

Wow. Someone above hates peanut butter.
When my blood sugar feels low (I don't eat meals during the day) I have a spoonful of peanut butter.

Peanut Butter on bagels, toast, by itself... crackers...

Mussels. I LOVE shellfish, and LOVE seafood of all kinds, but I just can't with mussels, and I have tried and tried dozens and dozens of times at all different eateries, from basic take-out Italian to high-end Italian and French establishments, and all I get is a rancid seawater taste, No idea why my palate just won't cooperate with mussels because I want to like them!
