He performed Same Love and created a real Grammy moment. He seemed poised for something . . . BIG. And then he disappeared.
He got taken down by a social justice scandal perpetuated by some queer women of color who have produced nothing of note or value since.

He suffered the fate of being a white male is a perceived black industry. They let it slide with Eminen, I guess because of his Dr. Dre connections. But they weren’t going to let that work with a white guy from Seattle. Its a shame because he had some great songs.

Can't help the tears when I watch that.

He released this anti-Trump freestyle a week ago.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 29, 2021 4:31 PM |
It was 2014. Things were about to change big time in 2015. One of my favorite Grammy moments.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 29, 2021 4:34 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 29, 2021 4:35 PM |
He was the flavor of the day
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 29, 2021 4:38 PM |
From what I understand, he had a bit of a relapse, got clean and decided to step back from the music industry a bit. He’s still doing his thing, but it’s a bit healthier for him to keep a lower profile.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 29, 2021 4:39 PM |
I think he also overplayed his hand with the gay angle. I sincerely appreciate his support but he went from that guy with the cool Thriftshop song and a few other fun tracks to the gay advocate. Well, his straight male fan base was short-lived and things just went away. It felt like he fell on a sword for some progress even though he's a straight ally.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 29, 2021 4:44 PM |
I hope you're not right R10, but I understand what you mean. He could still come back big. He has a great presence and I love how he called out the homophobes "behind a message board." "Same Love" was iconic. You heard it everywhere that year. Overplayed a bit, yes, but still a triumph.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 29, 2021 4:52 PM |
The only artists in popular music who have any longevity are people like Dylan, Springsteen or Nick Cave. You need to have a repertoire that doesn’t depend on you being the cute “It” girl/boy of the moment.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 29, 2021 4:53 PM |
I heard he moved to Cuba and changed his name to Macklenomore
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 29, 2021 4:54 PM |
[quote] He could still come back big.
I AM 'big"! It's the white rap songs about thrift shopping that got small...
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 29, 2021 4:57 PM |
Things fizzled a bit, because he pushed a straight woke image that didn't sit well with his not-so-woke straight demographic who like their songs to be more rapy and demeaning towards women.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 29, 2021 5:04 PM |
He won best rap Grammy over a much more superior album by Kendrick Lamar. A total joke. Proof Grammy voters have no clue about hip-hop.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 29, 2021 5:06 PM |
Who cares about Macklemore.
What about his cute former sidekick Ryan Lewis?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 29, 2021 5:09 PM |
He tour with Kesha a few years ago. I saw them at The Forum in Los Angeles and it was packed! Macklemore came on stage first and tore the stage up! The audience lost their shit the entire set. He was SHOCKINGLY great! The crowd went absolutely crazy! So much fun. What a surprise. I went for Kesha.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 29, 2021 5:13 PM |
r15 you're being dramatic. It's not that people want rapy or demeaning stuff but straight people simply don't care about gay/lesbian issues at the same rate as gay/lesbian people. I honestly give few shits about lesbians and trans folks stories, they bore me. I support them and their rights, especially lesbians, but I don't seek out stuff on them. If I see a movie with a lesbian or trans plot I might turn it off because sometimes seeing two girls go at it makes me uncomfortable. Obviously, it depends on the film or content but I rarely venture into the lesbian sections on my streaming apps.
So I think it's alright for people to reject an artist that is perceived to focus on a topic that you or I may not be interested in hearing. He has a number of good songs but he got a bit typecasted for the gay support track. This is also no different than DL giving no shits about black issues, Latinos, Asians, or a number of non-white Boomers or Brunch Queen topics. We like what we fucking like, AND there is nothing wrong with that.

Ryan Lewis was beautiful. Love his mustache.

That skinny little man was delicious.

Ryan Lewis, get off my thread!!!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 29, 2021 5:15 PM |
Well it is not like his music flopped. He has not released anything since 2016.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 29, 2021 5:20 PM |
He always seemed like a closet case to me and that song his small way of "peaking" out and feeling it out. The "I thought that I was gay" line never registered with me. Something seemed off as though he was trying to convince himself and everyone else that he wasn't.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 29, 2021 5:24 PM |
His album Gemini was released in 2017.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 29, 2021 5:31 PM |
He should come out of the closet and re-brand himself as a white lil nas x.

Lamar hasn't done too badly at the Grammys at all. Here's one of his Grammy performances - The Blacker the Berry... Everyone to their own but not crazy about him or his music. Give me more Macklemore.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 29, 2021 5:43 PM |
Speaking of Macklemore, where did the rumors about Ryan Lewis being gay come from? He’s married to a woman and is considered an LGBT activist, but I seem to recall references to him being openly gay several years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 29, 2021 5:53 PM |
Eminem is an anomaly. White rappers don't have long-lasting careers in the music biz.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 29, 2021 5:57 PM |
Macklemore had a sense of humor, something alien to rap until he came along. He brought in a whole new audience. I still laugh at Thrift Shop.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 29, 2021 6:06 PM |
[quote] something alien to rap until he came along.
That's... untrue. "Thrift Shop" was, however, seen as a highly creative meme before people genuinely got into his music.

R35 Not the same person? They have so many names/personas today I’m not sure who’s who?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 29, 2021 6:57 PM |
Macklemore recorded his message song "White Privilege" in 2005 and it got 6.7 Million views. "Thrift Shop" has over 1.5 Billion views. Laughing not allowed in hip hop? You'd think everyone would get on the train. I like how he pulled Wanz out of obscurity and gave his career a nice jump.5B. Does Macklemore or the record company get the YouTube money?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 29, 2021 7:32 PM |
The Kendrick Lamar thing is what sunk him. Especially after the perceived disrespect of the leaked text. It was instant cancellation by the black community. Eminem is the only white rapper that's permanently invited to the cookout.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 31, 2021 2:45 AM |
He performed with Madonna, that's what sunk him. Anyone who ingratiates themselves too deeply with her sees their career tank.

R43 Kendrick Lamar and Drake still sell records.

He was really nice but he was basically the Vanilla Ice of the last decade.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 31, 2021 6:38 PM |
He’s cheesy and his music isn’t innovative at all. He seems very fake as well.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 31, 2021 6:46 PM |
I think even he was ashamed by that Grammy.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 31, 2021 6:48 PM |
The backlash over the best rap Grammy really crushed him. Although he has cred with black people in Seattle, the urban community never embraced him. They viewed him as essentially a Seattle white boy appropriating an urban genre. He lacks the authentic urban bona fides of Post Malone or G-Eazy. Although he has some flava, he is still very white. His wife is not even black or Latin.

Black people like Post Malone
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 31, 2021 6:56 PM |
I think it's difficult to get traction when you aren't part of the record industry and under contract. He broke out without it and the industry doesn't like that.
Second, he got married in 2015 and had 2 kids shortly thereafter.
I think he concentrated on his sobriety and being a good father to his kids. He made his money. A lot of people don't feel the need to be a 'star' for their entire lives. It's a sign of maturity and mental health.
I like to think that he's more grounded - perhaps living in Seattle the whole time aided this - and just hasn't thought it to be a huge priority anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 31, 2021 6:58 PM |

They do? His fanbase is almost entirely white douchebros and a few white women.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 31, 2021 8:00 PM |
I loved the guy at first, but he just beat the SJW shit over the head. Even as a gay guy he started seeming to patronize and use it more as a shtick and not out of any deep sincerety. It's great that he's not homophobic, but he just kept pushing and pushing it for some reason until it was exhausting. And I found the massive lesbian chick who kept having to sing on most of his songs to be overbearing as well. I think that whole Grammy circus thing just turned me off.

Only on DL would someone state that Kendrick Lamar, universally considered one of the genres' most talented, sucks. But they're right about Drake who's commercially successful but not really respected.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 1, 2021 2:23 AM |
Drake is extremely popular. Kendrick is respected, but not as popular by far. People say his music is deep, profound, but they would rather listen to Drake and party to his music
