Lyle Talbot

He thought he was all that but he wasn't. The fact he played second fiddle to Ozzie is tellin enough.

He worked for Ed Wood. That's good enough for me.

Lyle Talbot had as much sex appeal as John Payne.

by Anonymousreply 5January 28, 2021 8:48 PM

He had a very long career.

His other son David founded Salon.

And David Talbot's son wrote and directed "The Last Black Man in San Francisco." So quite a family legacy.

Stephen is a journalist and documentary producer, and worked a lot for "Frontline."

^ The Last Black Man in San Francisco is a provocative title.

R11 But Joel McCrea had a different kind of sex appeal.

I grew up with Lyle Talbot as Ozzie Nelson's friendly dowdy neighbor so imagine my shock and pleasant surprise re-discovering him one morning on TCM in a great Loretta Young pre-code film directed by Busby Berkeley called SHE HAD TO SAY YES.

Lyle plays Loretta's boss and suitor and he just oozes sex. Kind of a college preppie with an edge appeal if that makes sense. No shirtless scenes so I can't compare his young body to John Payne's or Joel McCrea's but he rocked those 1930s suits and pleated trousers. It really made me wonder why he didn't become more a leading man when he was in his youth.

He almost looks like Clark Gable in the first picture.

OP, you started this thread but haven't bothered to carry it through.

His daughter Margaret Talbot is a writer for the New Yorker, highly regarded too. She wrote a lovely biography of her father.
