In & Out: The 1997 Movie

Was it helpful or hurtful for us? It’s so full of stereotypes, it made me uncomfortable to watch as a kid.

It's now 2021, and same sex marriage is legal. So, no, it didn't hurt us.

by Anonymousreply 1January 26, 2021 7:56 PM

I thought it was funny in the context of the era

by Anonymousreply 2January 26, 2021 7:57 PM

Matt Dillon winning an Oscar? Please.

by Anonymousreply 3January 26, 2021 7:57 PM

It was the last movie I saw at a drive in.

by Anonymousreply 4January 26, 2021 7:58 PM

A drive-in played a gay movie? That in and of itself was progress.

by Anonymousreply 5January 26, 2021 7:59 PM

I think it’s hilarious. Joan Cusack is absolute genius in it.

by Anonymousreply 6January 26, 2021 8:00 PM

Little Girl about the marriage: “My mom says it won’t last.”

Debbie Reynolds: “Your Mom’s an alcoholic.”

by Anonymousreply 7January 26, 2021 8:03 PM

I do think it killed Kevin Kline’s career as a lead due to stereotyping and typecasting.

by Anonymousreply 8January 26, 2021 8:04 PM

It has aged but it came along at the right time. I went to a test screening in Times Square and the audience lost its collective mind over the kiss between Kevin and Tom. You couldn't hear the dialogue after it for five minutes.

by Anonymousreply 9January 26, 2021 8:05 PM

R5. It was in the SF Bay Area

by Anonymousreply 10January 26, 2021 8:05 PM

In 1997 this was considered ground breaking, a Gay-themed, mainstream rom-com with big name stars was unheard of

by Anonymousreply 11January 26, 2021 8:06 PM

It hurt Tom Selleck’s feelings that people thought he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 12January 26, 2021 8:07 PM

FUCK Barbra Streisand! ... And You!

by Anonymousreply 13January 26, 2021 8:09 PM

Tom Hanks inspired it with publicly outing his beloved teacher with 💘 at the Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 14January 26, 2021 8:12 PM

I liked it. I liked Rudnick's use of the In & Out concept.

He first presented the notion that the Mouth was used to accept items into the body and the Anus used to remove items from the body.

And then he gave I think at least two instances where the Mouth is used to eject items from the body (but no spoken examples of when the Anus is used to accept items into the body).

by Anonymousreply 15January 26, 2021 8:13 PM

The rotary phone bit still makes me laugh.

by Anonymousreply 16January 26, 2021 8:14 PM

r3 But consider the competition:

Glenn Close: This is Cameron's first nomination and he's in extremely good company. Tonight he joins fellow best actor nominee Paul Newman for "Coot", Clint Eastwood for "Codger", Michael Douglas for "Primary Urges", and Steven Seagal for "Snowball in Hell".

by Anonymousreply 17January 26, 2021 8:15 PM

"It hurt Tom Selleck’s feelings that people thought he was gay."

But HE IS, Blanche! HE IS!

by Anonymousreply 18January 26, 2021 8:23 PM

IS EVERYBODY GAAAAAY?!?!?!?

by Anonymousreply 19January 26, 2021 8:25 PM

Kevin Kline is beautiful in that, and always a comic genius, in films and theater.

by Anonymousreply 20January 26, 2021 8:26 PM

What a fabulous window treatment!

by Anonymousreply 21January 26, 2021 8:29 PM

It was a contractual obligation!!!

by Anonymousreply 22January 26, 2021 8:32 PM

[quote] I do think it killed Kevin Kline’s career

I don't care too much about him personally.

But he starred in this clever gay-positive Paul Rudnick movie and then starred in that awful gay-negative, disappointing, hopeless, closeted, lame and spineless Cole Porter movie afterwards.

Yes, it had stereotypes, but was ultimately heartwarming and funny. It was groundbreaking for its time, kind of like Will and Grace in that era; a bit dated now, and maybe a cringey moment here and there, but still worth watching and had an overall positive effect on society to get used to the idea of this reality being normal and okay.

Joan Cusack was hilarious. Great comedic role for her, but she sorta does the same character in all her 90s movies—I just happen to love her quirkiness.

by Anonymousreply 24January 26, 2021 8:37 PM

I love the "manly" tape he hascand the convo with the priest in the he confessional.

On why he hasn't tried to fuck Emily in 3 years:

Howard: "He respects her"

Priest: "he's gay"

by Anonymousreply 25January 26, 2021 8:42 PM

It was a good-looking movie.

Good-looking locales. Lots of good-looking performers playing morally-shady characters.

A good-looking poster with the title in Bodoni!

by Anonymousreply 26January 26, 2021 8:47 PM

I’ve never liked Kevin Kline more. He made a man who suppressed his sexual feelings into his 30s totally believable. And Joan Cusack is hilarious, sad and heartbreaking. Special mention: Shalom Harlow as Dillon’s model girlfriend.

by Anonymousreply 27January 26, 2021 8:49 PM

Since it took place in Indiana, I wonder how much of an effect it had on little Petey Buttigieg?

by Anonymousreply 28January 26, 2021 8:49 PM

Yes enjoyed Shalom Harlow (who is NOT Jewish btw).

She also isn't a platinum blonde, r29.

by Anonymousreply 30January 26, 2021 8:57 PM

I'M GAY!!!

by Anonymousreply 31January 26, 2021 9:47 PM

I liked Harlow's bulimia joke.

by Anonymousreply 32January 26, 2021 10:12 PM

The single worst movie ever to be nominated for an Oscar. Even worse than "Mannequin" and that is saying a lot,

by Anonymousreply 33January 26, 2021 10:18 PM

The Birdcage was 10x better.

by Anonymousreply 34January 26, 2021 10:24 PM

She was too old for Yentl!!!

by Anonymousreply 35January 26, 2021 10:26 PM

"Homosection, I mean, intersection." - A very confused Howard Brackett who has been kissed by a man for the first time.

What was the "Color Me Barbra" joke? I forgot that one.

by Anonymousreply 36January 26, 2021 10:30 PM

As a five year old I was obsessed with Tom Selleck on Magnum. In & Out came out I was in high school and thought that gay men like Selleck might actually exist! Oh my eternal excitement. Then I turned 21 a few years later and the reality that the Selleck's out there were very few and far between.

So for me? More hurtful than helpful.

by Anonymousreply 37January 26, 2021 10:35 PM

I loved In & Out and thought it was hilarious. It had a great, cohesive cast. Everybody did a great job but Joan Cusack was especially fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 38January 26, 2021 10:38 PM

^ Joan's role was difficult because she is essentially jilted

by Anonymousreply 39January 26, 2021 10:40 PM

The only thing worse than small independent gay films that hardly anyone saw were the big mainstream gay Stepin Fetchit efforts that comparatively everybody saw.

by Anonymousreply 40January 26, 2021 10:48 PM

R40 Do you consider this a "Stepin Fetchit movie"?

by Anonymousreply 41January 26, 2021 10:52 PM

I was up for the Joan Cusack role. But Barbra Stresiand and Steven Spielberg called the producers and I was dropped from the film. It could have been my big screen bbreakthrough.

by Anonymousreply 42January 26, 2021 10:53 PM

Still very funny. Yes it has stereotypes, but it has fun with them. Everyone is well cast and directed. Cusack is great. Selleck was having fun with the years of gay rumors. Fittingly, I saw it in Indiana (in Indy for a meeting) and it was obvious that it wasn't shot there---no great loss.

Kline was never a leading man--always best as an ensemble player. I doubt that this affected his career very much.

by Anonymousreply 43January 26, 2021 11:01 PM

[quote] What was the "Color Me Barbra" joke? I forgot that one.

For r36:

Peter: What was Barbra Streisand's eighth album?

Howard: Color Me Barbra.

Peter: Stud!

Howard: Everybody knows that!

Peter: Everybody where? The Little Gay Bar on the Prairie?

by Anonymousreply 44January 26, 2021 11:14 PM

The main thing I recall is Joan Cusack screaming Do you know how many times I had to watch Funny Lady?!

by Anonymousreply 45January 26, 2021 11:34 PM

R11 forgot about The Birdcage which came out a year earlier and did $185,260,553 in business vs In & Out's paltry $63,856,929.

by Anonymousreply 46January 26, 2021 11:37 PM

r34 The Robin Williams/Nathan Lane Birdcage remake was great, but talk about stereotypes! It was far too campy and a little too wild/risque to appeal to wider straight audiences, in my opinion. I love it to this day, but I remember it was rated R when it came out in the 90s and wasn't going to pull in any straight people, whereas I think In and Out was PG-13 and marketed as slightly more of a family-friendly kind of comedy that happened to be about a man who realizes he's gay. Both movies are great.

by Anonymousreply 47January 26, 2021 11:44 PM

R47 see R46.

by Anonymousreply 48January 26, 2021 11:45 PM

Anything with Kevin Kline can't ever be helpful.

by Anonymousreply 49January 26, 2021 11:45 PM

I do find the scene of Kline dancing to Diana Ross' version of I Will Survive a bit cringey. I know it's not supposed to be serious but I have never really found it that funny.

Joan Cusack is hilarious in this. She is such a scene-stealer - Broadcast News, Working Girl, Addams Family Values and this film.

by Anonymousreply 50January 26, 2021 11:53 PM

I loved the trio of students ("Animal Kingdom's" Shawn Hatosy in an early role) and their coming to terms with their favorite teacher's life, and life in general.

by Anonymousreply 51January 27, 2021 2:24 AM

was the print ad / poster guy with undone tux tie supposed to be Kevin Kline?

That's bothered me for 20 years...it looks like a generic Kevin Kline airbrushed 20 years younger

Anybody???

by Anonymousreply 52January 27, 2021 3:36 AM

In the 90s, I thought Kevin Kline and Patrick Bergen were the same person.

by Anonymousreply 53January 27, 2021 5:11 AM

I thought KK was hot in “Sophie’s Choice” but that’s about it.

I remember straight girls thinking the movie was hilarious - the same way they thought Will & Grace was funny.

by Anonymousreply 55January 27, 2021 5:32 AM

I watched some of it on cable recently, and kept thinking that Kevin Kline looks like Steve Martin and Jon Hamm had a child together.

I can't believe I never noticed that the title is written in rainbow colors.

by Anonymousreply 56January 27, 2021 8:47 AM

Did Selleck and Kline really kiss? Was there tongue action involved?

by Anonymousreply 57January 27, 2021 8:57 AM

Huge crush on Shawn Hatosy. Still do

by Anonymousreply 58January 27, 2021 9:01 AM

Kevin Kline revealed himself to be an ACTOR - like Mandy Patinkin - during the press interviews.

Great actor - never want to meet him.

by Anonymousreply 59January 27, 2021 9:03 AM

R59, Kline and Patinkin both have something else in common. They've both fucked Patti Lupone.

by Anonymousreply 60January 27, 2021 9:18 AM

[quote]Fittingly, I saw it in Indiana (in Indy for a meeting) and it was obvious that it wasn't shot there---no great loss.

Greenleaf Indiana was actually Northport Long Island which co-incidentally is the home town of Kevin Kline's Julliard lover Broadway living legend Patti Lupone.

Another fun, carefree movie from the 90s. This was the last decade before all kinds of shit happened to us. Then came 9/11 and it seemed to go downhill further and further still.
