I am skeptical, probably using frozen premade crust. Jet’s won’t be too happy.
Pizza Hut launches Detroit style Pizza today
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 28, 2021 12:09 AM |
Will it taste better than Little Caesars and Jets?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 26, 2021 3:48 PM |
Is it made with water from Flint?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 26, 2021 3:49 PM |
That picture looks gross. Since when does Detroit Style Pizza have the sauce all over the top? Only Chicago style pizza does that.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 26, 2021 3:52 PM |
The foundation of the the thing seems less a crust than a waffle.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 26, 2021 3:53 PM |
So it's basically just their cheesy bread with marinara spread over the top.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 26, 2021 3:56 PM |
Yum. I’ll try this. I bought a steering wheel food tray so I can eat out but avoid people.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 26, 2021 3:57 PM |
What the fuck is "Detroit Style Pizza"??
Chicago Style is deep-dish.
New York Style is floppy over-sized slices.
But what the fuck is Detroit Style? Never heard of it.

That could finally give Pizza Hut some flavor again. Last time I tried it it tasted like greasy cardboard. The crust, sauce, toppings - nothing had flavor.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 26, 2021 4:11 PM |
What is a steering wheel food tray, chubs @ R6? R7 has never watched Cooks Country or America's Test Kitchen. DL heart throb, Bryan Roof, made Detroit style pizza. Jet's makes great pizza!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 26, 2021 4:13 PM |
R11, I was just going to post about Cook's Country. I watched an episode this past week and they made Detroit Style pizza.
In it's original version, it uses focaccia as the base. Then it's covered in cheese. Marinara sauce is drizzled on the top in a striped fashion. It seems dry to me as the amount of sauce can't be more than a 1 cups' worth.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 26, 2021 4:45 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 26, 2021 5:11 PM |
That's a shitload lot of nitrates just in one slice. Enjoy your stomach and bowel cancer!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 26, 2021 5:55 PM |
R11, it’s a food tray that connects to your steering wheel. It’s a little high for me. It’s level with my chin almost so it’s awkward eating. I can’t lower it because I don’t fit. People sometimes stare. I don’t care. I have a light blue one and I don’t have a cup holder. Below gives you an idea.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 26, 2021 6:04 PM |
A most American device, R15.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 26, 2021 6:07 PM |
I was a total skeptic on the Cook’s Country recipe - too bready, not enough sauce. And the ATK thin crust recipe is perfect. When I made the Detroit -style, though, fat whores rejoiced. It is easy to make, crispy, cheesy, and delicious.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 26, 2021 6:10 PM |
Of course they're using frozen premade crust. Obviously, there's an audience for Pizza Hut, chain-y and unimpressive as the pizza might be, so it's not a bad addition to the menu.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 26, 2021 6:14 PM |
[quote] It’s level with my chin almost
Exactly how tall are you? How do you see over the steering wheel if THAT is level with your chin?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 26, 2021 6:35 PM |
Apologies, R13!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 26, 2021 7:19 PM |
Cosmo you and me is always good. (NY accent)
I just like bustin em on ya.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 26, 2021 7:22 PM |
Like all Pizza Hut products, this one will be individually prepared and/or heated, low in sodium, full of farm-fresh ingredients, and not the slightest bit greasy. Can't wait!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 26, 2021 7:26 PM |
Yo, R22! I was born in Brooklyn! I think the area is now called Crown Heights.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 26, 2021 7:28 PM |
Does it come with bullets for toppings?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 26, 2021 7:34 PM |
Cosmo, good thing you got out whenever you did. That area has been a shithole for at least 30 years now.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 26, 2021 7:36 PM |
What makes it Detroit style pizza? Do they bake an unregistered snub nosed 38 in the dough?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 26, 2021 7:39 PM |
I was a fan of the Pizza Hut "pan" crust. This Detroit style pizza looks like focaccia, which is a flat bread. Say what you like about PH, but their ovens are better than what most ppl have at home. Seems like a waste to be making focaccia "crust" in an industrial oven.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 26, 2021 7:43 PM |
R27, on Cook's Country, they explained that the pan the pizza is cooked in was originally used in the auto industry to hold bolts, or screws, or something like that. It really is Chicago Deep Dish with less sauce, IMO. Both have more cheese than sauce as well as cheese being put on top of the crust instead of sauce then cheese a la NY pizza.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 26, 2021 8:54 PM |
In Italy they would scoff at such silliness. And they would tell you this and the majority of pizzas made in the US are not real pizzas. There are actually very few pizzerias in the US that make authentic Italian style pizza.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 26, 2021 9:00 PM |
For all the ignorants...
Detroit-style pizza is a rectangular pizza with a thick crust that is crispy and chewy. It is traditionally topped with Wisconsin brick cheese, then tomato sauce layered on top of the other toppings (rather than directly onto the dough). This style of pizza is often baked in rectangular steel trays designed for use as automotive drip pans or to hold small industrial parts in factories. The style was developed during the mid-twentieth century in Detroit before spreading to other parts of the United States in the 2010s. The dish is one of Detroit's iconic local foods.
The sauce is unique as it uses granulated garlic (rather than fresh) as a primary seasoning.

"IT' SQUARE PIZZA PHYLLIS, OKAY!"
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 26, 2021 9:10 PM |
Square is all the rage now. I'm embarrassed to admit we tried this frozen version and its delicious. Crust is foccacia adjacent.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 26, 2021 9:27 PM |
We have Buddy’s here which is a Detroit style pizza chain. Some people rave about them but I prefer a thinner standard crust style pizza.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 26, 2021 10:09 PM |
Detroit style pizza is essentially bread
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 26, 2021 11:01 PM |
Basically it's similar to Jet's square pizza (like OP said)
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 27, 2021 4:59 AM |
I was born and raised in Detroit and they never had pizza with cheese first then sauce drizzled. This is some bullshit. A marketing invention. We had the sauce then the meat and other shit and then the cheese. LOTS of cheese.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 27, 2021 5:08 AM |
I am not too proud to eat some crap fast food but I agree the sauce drizzled on top ruins it for me.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 27, 2021 5:39 AM |
It will take you an hour to order online; you will get extremely skimpy ingredients and rude, incompetent service (don't count on delivery). But they think adding a new gimmick pizza is going to help them bounce back from failure. There are only 2 or 3 locations left out of a dozen in my small state just a few years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 27, 2021 5:54 AM |
This is why we can't have nice pizza.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 27, 2021 5:54 AM |
Chicago style pizza seems like it would be the obvious choice. Where can you get Chicago style pizza in nyc?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 27, 2021 5:57 AM |
Detroit is a gourmet's paradise if you like garbage. Not judging, Bears and Racoon love garbage.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 27, 2021 5:59 AM |
Reading that description, I don't think "Detroit Style" pizza is unique enough to warrant distinction.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 27, 2021 6:02 AM |
it doesn't look good to me. i used to like pizza hut back in the 90's.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 27, 2021 6:13 AM |
On the rare occasion I have got Pizza Hut I like the thin crust. They changed the formula for the regular crust, now it's too sweet. And the pan pizza is not as delicious as it used to be and sometimes tastes undercooked which makes me leery of a thicker crust pizza like this.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 27, 2021 6:15 AM |
What R7 said. I have never heard of Detroit-style pizza.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 27, 2021 6:34 AM |
I hate thick dense bready pizza. I grew up with it and usually leave it on the plate. As an American, I thought that's how it had to be until I went to Italy and my whole world changed. The pizza crust in Italy is like light airy artisan bread with big air holes in the crumb and delicate crispy crust. It take 2 days from start to finish to make the dough. It's way better than NY pizza in my opinion. But it's not thick and gloppy with 2lbs of toppings so if that's your idea of pizza, you probably wont like it.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 27, 2021 6:39 AM |
R47 is right. The only thick dough pizza I've ever had in Italy were camogli, which are panini style toasted sandwiches.
Pizza in Italy is as R47 describes.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 27, 2021 6:50 AM |
Just great. A thicker pile of nasty tasting shit.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 27, 2021 7:30 AM |
I've been on a quest to find decent Chicago-style pizza in NYC and have not had great success. i was desperate and tried Uno's recently and it tasted like a chain. I'm from the midwest and cannot abide the crust on NY style pizza. It's an abomination to dough. There are a couple places in Manhattan that supposedly have Chicago (thin crust as well as deep dish) but I'm out of borough so it would have to be a special trip and I've never tried. One is called Emmet's and the other Big Al's.

Review Brah gives the Pizza Hut Detroit style pizza a 9 out of 10.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 27, 2021 6:02 PM |
Review Brah said there's a lot of pepperoni on the pizza & I'm surprised.

I can't believe people are acting like we should know what "Detroit pizza" is because it was featured on a tv show.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 27, 2021 6:08 PM |
Does Detroit style mean it has barbecue potato chips and orange soda in it?

You don't order Pizza Hut for authentic whatever-the-fuck pizza. You order Pizza Hut when you're craving greazzzzy pizza.

I grew up in Detroit, and yes this is a thing. I'm surprised former Detroiters never heard of Buddy's? Jet's, Dolly's, Shields' are other chains that do this style. This and Coney Islands are about the only foods Detroit is known for. R31 is spot-on in the description. A lot of places also twice-bake the crust, Focaccia-adjacent is a good description. Sauce on top is common.
I had pizza from a mid-Atlantic pizza chain last week claiming it was "Detroit style". The only thing Detroit style about it was its square shape. The crust was all wrong, as was the cheese. I'm skeptical that Pizza Hut will "get it" either.
