Happy Birthday, Golden Girl.
Happy birthday to my favorite old Hollywood whore!
She's great.
Everyone seems to remember GG but for my money, she had a much more interesting character on MTM and this was an amazing scene.

She's of the LESBIAN persuasion in real life.

R1 - I'm afraid that's me. I'm a child of the 80s and 90s and grew up on Golden Girls. MTM was a little before my time and I never caught onto it when reruns were a big thing, but, you're right, Betty is SO good there. Well, all of them are, but the way she keeps this menacing bitch JUST below the surface is so funny. The "Happy Homemaker" was obviously a little more Betty than Rose Nylund was.

I love Betty White but I hated the role they wrote for her in Golden Girls, the ridiculously long stupid St. Olaf stories, they overdid her stupidity. I don't blame Betty, she did the best anyone could have done with terrible writing but I have always wondered why the writers did such a horrible job writing her role compared to how they did writing the roles of the others. Rose's naivety was enduring, but when they moved from naivety to down right stupidity they lost me.
I realize some of you love the role she played, you are entitled to your opinion as am I mine that they wrote her a terrible role. I simply think they could have done better.

Sorry, she's overrated.

She's literally the most American thing there is.

According to you, r16. Her longevity and reputation in show business would say otherwise.

Fun fact, Betty White was born 7 years before Anne Frank.

The Life With Elizabeth TV show was the first time I saw Betty White on TV.
As a kid, I watched her on our family's first TV (a very small black and white TV) in the early 1950s.

I agree with R15 that the writers took Rose's stupidity too far sometimes. But I think they also took Blanche's sluttiness too far. But it was a comedy so I guess those exaggerations became part of the characterization.

I heard she’s not so nice. I preferred Bea Arthur.
