Rami Malek completely deserved the Best Actor Oscar
It's been about two years since he won.
I happened to watch Bohemian Rhapsody last night, and I was completely captivated and mesmerized by his performance. You couldn't take your eyes off him.
He absolutely nailed it, no matter what the haters say. And if I remember correctly, there were MANY haters.
Which is so strange, because he made the Freddy Mercury "character" so very compelling.
Between Rami in 2019 and Joaquin Phoenix in 2020, they were probably the most deserving Best Actor winners in over two decades, since Jack Nicholson in "As Good As It Gets."

I was on his side the entire time. DL tore him apart and I praised him. I even called him getting the Oscar, meanwhile DL said he wouldn’t even be nominated.

Yes, Rami was wonderful in Bohemian Rhapsody and Mr. Robot! But where are the naked photos?!?!?!

So where did all the hate come from?
Jealousy? Were they rooting for someone else that year?
I really don't get it.

Oh, wait. Now I remember.
That thirsty closet case creep Bradley Cooper was nominated for his performance in the 100th remake of "A Star is Born."
The sad queens lusting after him, really wanted Bradley to win. I guess because Lady Gaga was also in the movie, they wanted it to win something.
Idiots.

Well OP you had me at Rami but, Jack Nicholson in as Good As It Gets!! Saw it a few months back and wondered what all the praise was about for this overlong, treacly (that asthmatic kid and the pathetic gay guy) comedy- drama with too many characters and the feel of a sitcom. I assume the competition that year was weak. And speaking of competition what about Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems? He was tremendous and I've never been a Sandler fan and surely equal to Joaquin! Sandler was not even nominated!

R4 I think him not singing his own songs got him hate. But some people on here were just mean and tore him apart every chance they got.
In reality he was great.

Pete Davidson winning for "King of Staten Island" in 2021, would make it a three year trifecta of excellent Best Actor performances!
Can you just imagine the HATE that will spew from Datalounge, if Pete is nominated?
I can't wait!

Only to Bradley Cooper.
He was certainly mesmerized by himself during awards season. He was everywhere, and at every event, soaking up the attention.
And the following year, he called the Oscar season "utterly meaningless."
What a loser.

Watch clips and interviews of Freddie Mercury, then watch Rami. Rami’s Freddie is soulless and wasn’t even a mime of the shadow of Freddie’s presence and charisma. That said, the only other performance I saw that year was Cooper’s, and that was just fine, nothing esp noteworthy. Maybe Rami was the best on offer that year.

Rami's job isn't to do an impersonation of the character. It's to bring his INTERPRETATION of the character, to the movie.
I didn't know much or care much about Freddie Mercury prior to watching the movie.
However, Rami's performance in Bohemian Rhapsody made me actually want to learn more about Freddie, BECAUSE of Rami's portrayal of him. Rami made Freddie an interesting and compelling character, which is what all actors want to achieve.
So get out of here with that shite about his performance being soulless. That's just one person's opinion.
Obviously, many others felt his performance was Oscar worthy.

R17 The New York Film Critics Circle, The Los Angeles Film Critics Association and The National Society of Film Critics all named Ethan Hawke Best Actor of 2018 for First Reform. The Oscars have and were for so long more about publicity, box office and popularity rather than achievement and now about Wokeness. The aforementioned critics groups actually see the films and write published reviews. How many films do you think Academy Members actually see?

Bohemian Rhapsody was the only thing I've ever seen Malek in. Or so I thought.
Then this past summer I caught up again with HBO's The Pacific, and had completely forgotten he was in that as well. And he was excellent.

That's unfair as the decision was probably taken before casting. Many of Queen's songs exploited Mercury's broad vocal range, so (IMO) even a professional singer would have found it fairly demanding. Many singers at the tribute concert after his death had to change the songs' keys.

According to the movie, Freddie tells his bandmates that he has four extra incisors (or something like that) which makes his mouth bigger and able to hit those notes.
Fascinating how these little quirks of nature can produce a voice like that.

The problem with A Star is Born is they released it too early. There was serious Oscar buzz in September/October and the film came out just after the Toronto International Film Festival in early October. I think they should have released the film for Christmas. I think it might have gotten a bit more Oscar love if they had released it then. I think the Oscar buzz peaked too early.
Cooper and Gaga probably campaigned too hard but I think Cooper gave a brilliant performance. I'm not even a fan of his but I can't deny the power of his performance. I agree with OP, though, Malek was great. Bohemian Rhapsody is a film that I should hate - it's basically a Wikipedia version of Queen's history until Live Aid (and conveniently skipping things like the South Africa debacle) and it doesn't dig deep enough but it's well made, has a great soundtrack and Malek is very charismatic.

In "BR," a if not the plot line is for Freddie to accept and then act on his true sexuality.
A wink and a nod was incorporated in the pivotal (if likely apocryphal) scene at the truck stop, where Freddie follows a trucker into the Men's Room.
Adam Lambert, current singer for Queen, played that guy.

His face is so angelic, he was literally glowing in some of his scenes.
And he can act, too.

I'd incredibly glad that Cohen didn't get to play Mercury! Cohen is chilly onscreen and his comedy is based on cruelty and embarrassing others, he would have played Mercury as a monster.
Malek was wonderful, WAY better than the boring Cooper, he brought the star quality that the role needed and that Cohen will never have as long as he lives! That's the thing about Freddie, he was a STAR, to the public and to some extent in private, he was a flawed man but he had a charm and charisma that made people adore him in public and private, and forgive him all his faults. Malek brought that when a million other actors couldn't, and Cohen could never.

R28 The problem with A Star is Born is that it was the 4th version of this material. It peaked in the first 20 minutes. The chemistry between the 2 main characters was perfunctory at best so you didn't care whether these 2 stayed together. There were no supporting characters of any interest or note and they all pretty much disappeared halfway through the film and the inevitable ending wasn't moving in the least.

Funny you mention this, because that is EXACTLY what Rami conveyed with his acting.
Everything you wrote, was exactly what I felt the character of Freddie Mercury was in that movie. And that has everything to do with Rami.
That's why he won the Oscar.

Strangely, it was Piers Morgan and Roger Taylor who summed up nicely why the critics hated the movie so much.
They wanted it to be darker and more depressing, rather than the "celebration of Freddie's life" that it ended up being.
I very much agree with Piers and Roger. We want to be uplifted, and that's why the movie was so good.
I don't know why these idiotic critics think that movies have to be dark and depressing, to be "Oscar worthy."
