I think it's hilarious that people think after all this time, Alec didn't know. Maybe at the very beginning, but he's not stupid. She can't even feign a consistent accent in a one minute video. I have ignored this story until this morning and now I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.

1. She claims she spent part of her childhood in the US and part in Spain. Did she fucking live in Spain or just take week-long vacations there? Did she even do a study abroad or anything?

2. She said on Instagram "I am born in Massachusetts." I have noticed people from NY say "I'm born in New York" and Kyle Richards of Beverly Hills says "I'm born in L.A." What happened to the past tense in these places?

3. Could the new trend of always being born in present tense have something to do with people always rewriting their identies?

4. HOW MANY FUCKING INSANE PEOPLE DO THIS? How many people make up fake stories about their lives?

5. Lucille Ball wrote that she used to tell people she grew up in Butte, Montana because it sounded exotic to her. (She was from Jamestown, New York.) That is cuckoo, but is it as offensive to pretend to be from Butte as it is to pretend to be from a foreign country that speaks another language?

I worked at a casino in the early 90s and I saw this directly.

I remember a white guy from France in the casino and all the workers he came into contact with gushed, were charmed, and found so attractive his attempts at English with his heavy accent. As someone who used to workretail during the holidays in a big east coast city, I can say that the constant Babel of accents from all over the world are all annoying after awhile. It makes plenty of sense. Millions of immigrants came to the US in the mid-19th century til the 1920s. That a lot of people in a short period of time & they all landed in the East Coast cities. Some traveled west - Swedish, Norwegians & Germans were lured here by US govt pamphlets advertising free land in the Midwest. They mostly because farmers far from the East coast, but the majority of immigrants came through NY. Some of them came to Boston or Philly. Those immigrants crowded together in their own neighborhoods where they shared language, food, culture & religion. These were large neighborhoods with tens of thousands of residents. The Italians, Irish & Jewish stayed close to the east coast cities for several generations & developed their own cultures until post WW2, when suburbanization happened & broke up those close knit neighborhoods.

Does Brazil have that history? No. Not everywhere is Brazil, anymore than everywhere is America. Brazil didn’t have millions of Italian, Irish, German & Russia/Polish Jewish people crowding into very few cities.

Urbanization in Brazil largely took place after WW2. It took place in the US in the 19th & early 20th century when travel & communication were more difficult. Emigres often were unable to go back to their country of origin. People who were used to village living in their countries formed “villages” in the east coast US cities. Religion played a part in this. Brazil has about 120,000 Jews. The US has 5-10 million Jews. That’s a large number of people who do not follow Christianity, so they tended to stay in their own neighborhoods in order to observe their own traditions like eating kosher food, speaking Yiddish, going to synagogues in the neighborhoods. There’s safety in numbers. Easier to stick together than to go out on your own in a country where there were crazy Christians.

While Christianity was waning in Europe, it was getting crazier & stricter in the US. There was something called Brooklyn Day, which came directly from the Scots Irish Marching Season, when Protestants marched through Catholic neighborhoods in Ireland, particularly Northern Ireland. Brooklyn Day was a school holiday when all the Protestants in Brooklyn’s churches held a parade. They did this because so many Irish Catholics were moving into NY. The Scots Irish in Brooklyn were making sure everyone knew who was in charge. It wasn’t Catholics & it certainly wasn’t Jews. This is another reason for ethnic & religious groups staying in their own neighborhoods.

I've been balls deep in this story for days.

What's most striking to me is her constant use of non-answer answers, her obfuscation, her never making a claim that she can't attempt to walk back and blame on a "misunderstanding".

The woman herself has never said "I'm Spanish" or "I was born in Spain." Instead, she lets other people say it for her (her husband, her CAA bio, the magazines that profile her, Wikipedia, etc.). What she's done is strongly imply it with her statements, her Instagram posts and pictures, her using the name "Hilaria" and naming all her kids "Carmen", "Rafael", "Eduardo", etc, and of course, the infamous accent. It's really something to see.

For instance, on that "Mom" podcast, she says "I came here when I was 19 to go to school". The host says "from where?" She replies "my family lives in Mallorca".

She's giving the hosts, and every single listener, the impression that she came to the U.S. at age 19 from Mallorca. In reality, all she's said is that she came to NEW YORK at 19 to go to school, and that her family currently resides in Mallorca.

In another, similar interview, she's asked "so are your parents Spanish?" She answers "my parents are a mixture of many, many different things". She conveniently leaves out the fact that NONE of those "things" are Spanish.

Her ENTIRE history as a public figure is filled with this kind of deliberate misdirection and nonsense.

Just the other day, in the New York Times article that was meant to "clear up" the "misunderstandings", the interviewer weakly attempted to pin her down as to exactly how much time she spent as a kid in Spain. This is a KEY point to her story, because one thing she HAS repeatedly stated, is that she grew up in both Boston and Spain (although even that she seems to have walked back to "I SPENT TIME in both Boston and Spain"...see what she does?). She refused to be pinned down to anything resembling a timeline, and she offered this little tidbit of non-information: "sometimes school was involved". Again, she SEEMS to be claiming that she, at least at some point in her childhood, went to school in Spain. But is that what she's really claiming? What does "sometimes school was involved" really mean? It could mean her parents homeschooled her. It could mean her tony private school gave her homework assignments to do. It could mean she had a private tutor. So, when it turns out that there is no evidence whatsoever that she ever attended school in Spain...no classmates, no teachers, no school records, no class photos, no administrators to corroborate her claim, she can say "oh! I never said I went to school in Spain. I said school was involved, which to me meant that we were homeschooled! You guys just misunderstood!"

Also, before the NYT article, she was constantly referring to Mallorca, giving the impression that that was where she spent her time/grew up. But after the scandal broke, one of the things that people were saying was that she sounds nothing like a Mallorcan when she speaks Spanish, and that if she really grew up in Mallorca, she should have a certain level of fluency in Mallorqui, which is a completely different language from Spanish that just about every native Mallorcan speaks (it's a dialect of Catalan). So she casually mentions in the NYT article that the places she "spent time" were Madrid, Seville, and Valencia. Suddenly Mallorca is out of the picture, and there is an explanation for why she sounds the way she does, and hardly knows a word of Mallorqui.

As more and more is revealed, it really seems like her "time spent in Spain" was maybe, at most, a few weeks of vacation here and there, if that. She posted a couple of pics of her as a girl that she claims were taken in Spain, but there is no proof that they were, and they could have been taken anywhere. And as it turns out, both of her white, Anglo, non-Spanish parents had high-powered, full-time jobs in Boston (mom's a physician, dad's an attorney), from which it would be highly doubtful they could just pack up and take off. Both are on record as having continuously worked in Boston from the time before Hillary/Hilaria was born up until they retired. And neighbors and people who knew her are saying that she lived in Boston the whole time she was growing up.

The Daily Mail seems to be doing a really good job of not taking her at her word, and methodically debunking most of her story. They've already established that the parents and brother all speak to each other in English, and that their Spanish, though fairly fluent, is obviously American accented...thereby debunking any lingering claim that she is a native Spanish speaker. (Hilaria's accent in Spanish is actually very good, but her vocabulary is pretty basic and not anywhere near native-speaker level. She seems to phrase things the way an English speaker would, then translate to Spanish, rather than come up with phrases natural for a native speaker of Spanish).

The funniest thing about it, though, is the version of Spanish culture she presents. Somebody really hit the nail on the head when they called it the "gift shop version of Spain". It really is all about the most obvious, basic, stereotypical Spanish things: flamenco, paella, gazpacho, sevillanas, the Gipsy Kings (who hardly anybody in Spain actually listens to, they are way more well known outside of Spain than in Spain). These aren't things that regular, modern Spanish women are that into...it's like on the one hand she's trying so hard, but on the other hand, she's barely trying at all.

I can't even fathom what the actual Spanish Hollywood crowd Paz Vega, Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, etc.) must think about her. She's got to be the biggest laughingstock.

My sister went to the UK for her last two years of high school, went to college and grad school there, and married there. She was there for 21 years and when she came back, she had a weird hybrid accent that we constantly made fun of. She was really embarrassed that her voice had changed and for a bit actively tried to change it back to Murrican. What was weird was that she couldn't and said that she hated having to pay attention to how she sounded. She genuinely had absorbed a different way of speaking. She's been here for 5 years now and she sounds pretty normal again, but when she actively tried to sound normal, she really had trouble. It took time.

R245 That makes perfect sense. It's perfectly normal to develop an accent (including a regional one) when you're fully immersed in one. What's notable though is that despite 21 YEARS in the UK she still only had a weird hybrid accent--that's because her US English was the immersion language of her formative years and that's the accent that stubbornly "sticks."

There's simply no way Hilaria would have a lingering Spanish accent well into adulthood when she spent her formative years in the US and the Spanish she spoke was not among native Speakers.

The text from her brother is also telling about these people's delusions: she did NOT grow up with "two cultures." She grew up in a whitebread house with parents who fetishized Spanish culture. I'm US born Italian--my parents and siblings all are immigrants and I grew up in a town with lots of other recent Italian immigrants. I grew up with two cultures in a bilingual house. My non-Italian friends who ate my mom's cooking and picked up some Italian phrases here and there and joined our church parades did not grow up "with two cultures" no matter how often they came over. Many of them joked that they were "practically" Italian, but if any of them told people that they were actually Italian, they would have been laughed out of town.

And I don't speak English with an Italian accent--I can mimic one easily, and when I go to Italy I sound like a native speaker (although I'm rusty and give myself away when I fuck up the grammar). Even if I had a lingering hint of an accent from growing up in a house with native speakers, it would have been lost once I moved away, especially after attending college. Even my friends who immigrated from Italy as young children lost their Italian accents just from going through the US school system (although they could pick it back up at will).

I get that she THINKS that she was, but there is a BIG difference between being raised by a parent or parents who are actually from said culture, who grew up with it and spent their entire lives steeped in it, and being raised by a parent or parents who are, for all intents and purposes, tourists.

This is why her version of being Spanish was such a hollow caricature. It was the "Spanish Pavilion at Epcot Center" version of Spain: paella! Sevillanas! flamenco! mantillas and fans! gazpacho!

I guarantee you she has ZERO knowledge of Spanish culture beyond this bullshit. She speaks decent Spanish with an excellent accent, and can recite the stereotypical basics you will find on a souvenir refrigerator magnet. That's it.

She was definitely not raised with two cultures. Yes, her grandfather and her dad had an interest in the Spanish language but initially the interest was focused on South America/ Argentina. The family did not go to Spain and raise her there part time or anything like. People who know her report she spent her school breaks and her summers competing around Boston in Latin Ballroom, and even went to Blackpool at one time. That is clearly where she got her Spanish "persona", the cliche'd, exaggerated stylings of Latin Ballroom. Not Spain.

She pretended to be from Spain for two reasons I bet - one is her parents had purchased their place in Mallorca in 2011 and IMO the other is Spain sounds more international and "elite" to her than South America or Latin America even though most of her persona is borrowed from cliche's about those places.

She is a sad, pitiful, woman who exemplifies white privilege and I have no sympathy for and wish to see crashed, burned and ruined by this. Sam Cushing is the male equivalent.

Also, she's not beautiful. The Spanish gives her some exotic pass for meh looks and slutty clothes - otherwise she's just a mousy white mother with dyed black hair in trashy cocktail dresses and stilettos.

She's a little more gamine than Tina Fey and with crazier eyes but I swear when I first saw her I thought Baldwin had found himself a Spanish Tina Fey. The combination of sharp (some facial features), big eyes and curvy body were similar. Even side by side when they did a 30 Rock blurb you could see the resemblance.

Tina Fey is more spicy European than Hilaria it turns out because I think Tina is Greek. Hilaria is a WASP who dyes her hair shoe Polish black. She looks so different in every picture, I can’t tell what she really looks like. She’s a shape shifting phony.

I knew someone who found out they had some distant Jewish ancestry and started claiming they were Jewish. I’ve seen the same thing with people who think they have some distant Native American ancestry many generations back. It’s weird when people start appropriating ethnicities and cultures. It’s all good to understand and be proud of some aspect of your genetic heritage, but to go from Barbie to Pocahontas overnight just seems disingenuous and disrespectful.

I also hate all these “trans-cultural/racial” folks that adopt only some socially “in” aspect of another culture for attention/virtue signaling but know nothing—or have no appreciation for—any other aspect of it beyond what is personally beneficial for them to co-op.
