Is there a single foreign born actor/actress of color who became successful in Hollywood ?

Sophia Loren, Marion Cotillard, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Gal Gadot, Ana de Armas, Antonio Bandares, Javier Bardem etc are all very successful in Hollywood but can you name a single actor/actress of color who became successful in Hollywood ? Lupita Nyong'o is the closest you can get but she is practically American except for her place of birth. Bruce Lee is another.

by Anonymousreply 112December 31, 2020 3:17 PM

Anna May Wong - but that was an awful long time ago.

by Anonymousreply 1December 30, 2020 10:45 PM

Merle Oberon.

by Anonymousreply 2December 30, 2020 10:45 PM

Idris Elba? Sort of.

by Anonymousreply 3December 30, 2020 10:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 13December 30, 2020 10:53 PM

R11 They can't, they just can't. America cannot mind its business, they have the need to destroy the rest of the world like they did in their stolen lands

R7, we're fed up with right-wing idiots who blame BLM for everything they don't like.

by Anonymousreply 15December 30, 2020 10:55 PM

Ana de Armas has been famous for like ten seconds. Isn't it too soon to declare her a huge success? No one cares about Gal Gadot outside of Wonder Woman.

by Anonymousreply 31December 30, 2020 11:17 PM

r27 Eh ? Racist much ?

The simple answer is , if you are not born in the US, in order to make it in Hollywood you need to be white.

by Anonymousreply 32December 30, 2020 11:17 PM

Correction, Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco. He was 100% American. That was why he had such disdain for Hollywood. They treated him like a foreigner.

Djimon Hounsou is from Benin. Chiwetel Ejiofor was born in London to Igbo Nigerian parents. Naomie Harris was born in London to parents from Trinidad and Jamaica. Cynthia Erivo was also born in London, to Nigerian parents. David Oyelowo the same. and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Regé-Jean Page was born to a mother from Zimbabwe and a British father in London; he spent his childhood years in Zimbabwe. Sidney Poitier was raised in the Bahamas. He was born in Miami unexpectedly, and they returned home, where he grew up. His father claimed his last name was due to his family's Haitian roots, immigrating to the Bahamas.

by Anonymousreply 41December 30, 2020 11:28 PM

R41 good list but except Sidney Poitier none of them were/are A-list

by Anonymousreply 42December 30, 2020 11:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 43December 30, 2020 11:30 PM

R41 Exactly. Djimon Hounsou also worked for French movies

by Anonymousreply 44December 30, 2020 11:31 PM

R42 No white has become an A-lister in African countries. So what?

by Anonymousreply 45December 30, 2020 11:33 PM

r39 r31 r27 Op here. Are you seriously saying that the number of white/European trying to make it big in Nollywood or whatever industry is same as people of color across the globe trying to make it big in Hollywood ?

White Hollywood stars as they are, are already popular in those countries.

by Anonymousreply 46December 30, 2020 11:35 PM

[quote] No one considered Montalban, Quinn, Fernando Lamas or Sharif "people of color".

Many did and do.

by Anonymousreply 47December 30, 2020 11:38 PM

r42 So you are implying that Hollywood is justified in discriminating against people of color because other countries where people of color are in majority do not hire White people ?

by Anonymousreply 48December 30, 2020 11:38 PM

R46 They are popular because other countries are interested in American cinema. It might be time to take an interest in African, Indian, Asian cinema. And even European. There is also all the hegemony of the Us throughout the world which is why American actors are famous there. But to call Hollywood a racist because foreign born actor of color are not crowned is absurd when white people are not crowned in their countries either.

There are people who are there to create conflict constantly. Those who pretend to be anti-racists become the worst racists. Why does that matter?

by Anonymousreply 49December 30, 2020 11:41 PM

[quote]Lupita Nyong'o is the closest you can get but she is practically American except for her place of birth.

How? She was raised in Kenya and still doesn’t have American citizenship. She came for college when she was practically an adult. Her natural speaking accent, while very proper, isn’t American.

R48 Well said

by Anonymousreply 51December 30, 2020 11:44 PM

R47 No. You are wrong about that.

They were considered foreign.

People didn't lump them together with blacks.

Montalban, Quinn, Fernando Lamas etc. were all A listers, played romantic leads in big budget films.

r49 Your synonymous usage of Hollywood and White people is very fascinating.

Yes but you're wrong. At the height of their stardom they were NEVER referred to as POC.

by Anonymousreply 56December 30, 2020 11:50 PM

R23 To me what is fascinating is your analysis of racism in world cinema. You would like foreign actors of color to be propelled in Hollywood when foreign countries don't propel whites either. There is no discrimination on both sides. This is called respect for other cultures. You should watch foreign films before playing the virtual Malcom X.

The fact is, it's simply much harder for a POC to make it in Hollywood. When you compound that with the difficulties for a foreign-born actor, it's not surprising that many foreign POC don't make it in the industry.

It is simple, old-fashioned xenophobia and racism. You're being willfully ignorant if you think anything else.

by Anonymousreply 72December 31, 2020 3:43 AM

Italians and Spaniards are European. They're not "of color" unless they have African or Asian ancestry.

by Anonymousreply 75December 31, 2020 3:54 AM

Where you were born isn't relevant if you didn't grow up there. Keanu Reeves was born in Beirut, but he's culturally Canadian. Lupita Nyong'o was born in Mexico City but her family moved back to Kenya when she was less than a year old, so she's Kenyan. Bruce Willis was born in a German military base but can't speak a word of the language.

by Anonymousreply 76December 31, 2020 3:56 AM

Is there a single reason why a country which until recently was vastly majority white should have foreign born non-white people figure prominently in its white-created entertainment industry?

by Anonymousreply 77December 31, 2020 3:56 AM

A couple others beyond those already mentioned: Priyanka Chopra and Gemma Chan.

by Anonymousreply 78December 31, 2020 3:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 79December 31, 2020 4:01 AM

Troll thread by race obsessed moron, trying to reclassify celebrities of yesteryear by using his bizarre standards for ethnicity, with an inadvertent assist from today’s revisionist historians (certain self-proclaimed “woke” persons). Tedious and meaningless. Using your own PC jargon, OP, none of the celebrities you listed “self-identified as” POC. That’s the gold standard. It doesn’t matter what you (or the other assembled race-baiters) label them, one always accepts the self-identification of the individual being discussed a la Kamala Harris. Rachel Dolezal might be the exception to that rule though.

by Anonymousreply 80December 31, 2020 4:05 AM

[quote]Person of color wasn’t a term in wide use at the heights of their stardom.

In fact.

"Person of color" is a new term.

Previously the term was "colored people". And "colored people" were blacks. And blacks only.

Stars like Jose Ferrer, Lamas, Montalban, Quinn...huge stars at the time... were not "colored people". Sidney Poitier was "colored".

The "Latin Lover", may have had a darker complexion...usually called "olive"... but he was not considered "colored".

Nancy Kwan (Hong Kong) is Eurasian, starred in Flower Drum Song, The World Of Suzie Wong, Tamahine, Fate Is The Hunter, etc. A legit Hollywood star.

by Anonymousreply 88December 31, 2020 5:06 AM

OP I'm glad you made this thread. America is obsessed with race but its for a good reason. Things are complicated. American slavery lasted longer and also didn't keep.going back for more slaves. It is interesting dynamic. Many black Americans act like basic white Americans, to me, but having to deal with racism. Let that all sink. Groupthink is dynamic and powerful.

by Anonymousreply 89December 31, 2020 5:08 AM

Actually I don't understand the point of the thread. Is the implication there's some kind of prejudice against foreign born people of color in Hollywood? Maybe it would be worth asking: how many foreign born people of color ever attempted to be successful in Hollywood?

R95 Spaniards were invaded and colonized by Arabs from North Africa. "Occupied" is a bit too nice as a term because it lasted 800 years . It is not only whites who colonized and practiced slavery. The Arabs are in fact the first to enslave black people since the 8th century and still have not abolished slavery. But the hypocrites BLMs have nothing to tell them. They prefer FAKE fights like "foreign actors of color" instead of helping black slaves to be free in Africa. As if every foreigner's goal was to be successful in Hollywood. Americans are so pretentious and sickly self centered!

by Anonymousreply 98December 31, 2020 7:56 AM

[quote]Lots of Spaniards have African ancestry because the south of Spain, Andalusia was occupied by Muslims for centuries.

DNA has proven that the numbers of Spaniards with African DNA are relatively low. The Moors were more of a ruling class and didn't fraternize with the locals. Think the British in India, it was the same idea.

by Anonymousreply 99December 31, 2020 7:58 AM

LOL! American hypocrisy and indecency in one thread.
