I was browsing YouTube tonight and I noticed that whoever owns the Ed Sullivan Show archives has been uploading tons and tons of videos! Rejoice!
I think when it Ed Sullivan was on, it was past my bedtime. I remember my parents letting me watch some of it if Topo Gigio or Senor Wences was going to be on.
I don't think I liked either of those acts. I just wanted to stay up past my bedtime.

I greatly enjoy The Supremes medley tribute to Irving Berlin.
Added bonus: Ethel Merman joins them at 3:19 in the video.

America shook by first performance of long-haired, non-masculine men who would make every young man choose to become homosexual. Here, they play their radical song which would temp young people into having sex. Disgusting.

Her first appearance on the show. She was 21. June 9, 1963.

R9 Is that Barbra's hair piled on top, or is that a hat?

We watched a bunch of those clips last night. Some great stuff on there...

Judy. Her vocal is a bit shaky at times but she is still heartbreaking.

This is definitely one of my personal favorites, and is absolutely historical.

"I think when it Ed Sullivan was on, it was past my bedtime"
Yeah, me too, but I heard The Beatles from my bedroom and DEMANDED they let me watch! It was 1964 and I was seven!

Lucy Ball and Paula Stewart doing Hey, Look Me Over from WILDCAT.
It was Paula who introduced Lucy to Gary Morton.

Maya Plisetskaya doing The Dying Swan in 1962; unfortunately it's cut off at the end for Ed to say "good night".

I loved that you'd be watching some Bulgarians spinning plates and then The Doors would be next and then Anna Moffo and then Totie Fields.
THAT was television.

R7- John Lennon was QUITE masculine in 1964.

R27 Yeah, what happened? I guess being with Yoko sucked all the testosterone out of him.

What R26 was talking about, condensed down to 3:11.

R30 Thanks for that! They even included the show's sponsor, Mercury.
But I was hoping at some point they'd morph into the Supremes.

How old do you fucking think we are OP?

The Beatles, of course!
But so many others! Opera stars and Classical musicians (Americans have been deprived culturally with the demise of the ESS)!
Folk and Pop singers! Tumblers and yes, plate spinners! Brilliant comedians taking us from vaudeville to the cool 60s!
It was one of the greatest shows ever!

R14. Damn, Judy Garland was the best there ever was.
R8 / R9. Barbra is right up there as the greatest as well, and she was only 21.

R36, I wish they hadn’t cut out Ed Sullivan saying “Diana Ross will be fired for this!” when the Supremes weren’t on stage when he first introduced them.

How long did Ed Sullivan run? I’m watching performances on some Roku channel and they’re going through the decades. Some greats performances by The Supremes, Stones and Jackson 5. Music and showmanship was so much better then. Michael Jackson is sad to watch, he was so cute and talented. Who would have known what was to become of him.

Sullivan Show ran from 1948 through 1971. Before that he was emcee of city jazz events all over town. There's archival audio of him introducing a young Billie Holiday at an event during the mid 1930s.
I also love the Supremes appearances on Sullivan

Thanks, R39. I had no idea he started in the 40s.
