Jayne Wrightsman in Balenciaga
Ah, the inspiration for Big Bird

Lol, R1.

What color do you think that Balenciaga gown is?
I love it.

Pink or apricot

It looks like she gave the dress to the Met's Costume Institute.
House of Balenciaga. Evening dress, fall/winter 1965–66. Pale pink gown of pin-dotted silk gazar with ostrich feathers.
For some reason, it looks a little better in a color photo.

To be fair, I think that's a standard "on the spectrum" cut.

Jackie Kennedy vacationing in Capri in June 1971. The slit on her skirt is a bit risqué but nothing compared to Joan Kennedy at R14.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 25, 2020 7:48 PM |
Mrs. Reagan was either too old or too thin or too flat chested or something for this gown.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 25, 2020 7:57 PM |
Sorry OP but Jayne in that Balenciaga is iconic.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 25, 2020 8:07 PM |
Another version of the Balenciaga sold at auction a couple of years ago for something like 70G.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 25, 2020 8:09 PM |
R18, Vogue magazine may consider Jayne's dress iconic but I think it looks silly. It's really too much with all those feathers.
Excellent choice, R19.

Sorry too, Babe Paley looks fantastic.

Babe Paley is perfection.

I would prefer the Balenciaga dress in white or black, it’s a bit of a play on Swan Lake. I don’t like the apricot color.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 25, 2020 9:08 PM |
Madge
Then again a lot of actresses and singers deliberately go over the top to get the attention of the press. They're not trying to be elegant.

[quote]Sorry too, Babe Paley looks fantastic.
I might have pedestrian tastes but the top part of the dress looks like some irregular stiff fortification. I also don't like the V-shaped waist. Maybe if I could get a better look at the dress I'd like it more. There seems to be just that one photograph from that one angle.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 25, 2020 9:14 PM |
Who is that fabulous person, R23?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 25, 2020 9:17 PM |
The one and only James Charles R29, who I predict will someday star in a Joan Crawford biopic.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 25, 2020 9:26 PM |
Wouldn't he do better in a remake of "Imitation of Vanilla"?

Nancy Kissinger again, looking like Thomas Aquinas
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 26, 2020 12:19 AM |
Not one of Jackie's better looks.
I don't think I've seen photos of Nancy Kissinger before. I didn't realise she was into avant grade fashion. Another very good pic, R34
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 26, 2020 1:08 AM |
All of the above, R16.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 26, 2020 1:25 AM |
Oh dear. And Julianne Moore is an attractive actress that I like.
Obviously, the no stocking trend was started by young women to put the middle aged and elderly in their place.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 26, 2020 7:26 AM |
Marc, Marc, Marc. You should have worn thong underwear, not boxers. So conservative.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 26, 2020 8:36 AM |
Lol, R39. With that confident expression on her face, Liza thinks she looks amazing.

Either her head's too big, she's slouching or she got her bustle turned wrong way round.

Wow, R27. Madonna's shoes are BUSTED in that photo! Scuffed to hell! Surely she could've afforded a new pair of even cheap white pumps. And the anklet with the hose...no.

I assume you're talking about Nancy Reagan at R16. All valid points.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 26, 2020 7:10 PM |
Young Madonna had some punk in her. She looks fine, and the shoes fit the look perfectly.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 26, 2020 7:41 PM |
Melania would have worn this stuff when she was younger.

Jayne Wrightsman and Bunny Mellon were Jackie's mentors.
Jayne was the force behind the White House restoration, Bunny the Rose Garden design.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 11, 2021 4:13 AM |
Thanks for the info, R51. Do you know of any outfits that Mrs. Wrightsman or Mrs. Mellon wore that were fashion fails?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 11, 2021 10:35 AM |
Jayne's dress looks entirely appropriate for the mid-60s. I think she died in the last couple of years (remembering NYT obit). She was in her late 90s, I think.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 11, 2021 10:35 PM |
Yes, she died in April 2019 at the age of 99. I was surprised to learn she was born in Flint, Michigan but I'm sure it wasn't as economically depressed in 1919 as it is now.

Mrs. Wrightsman looking elegant in the 1960s.

Balenciaga balloon jacket.

I used to listen to Bells are Ringing a lot when I was a kid. I could never figure out they were saying Balenciaga. I had never heard the name before.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 13, 2021 5:34 AM |
Great choice, R60. Thanks. Hopefully, we'll see the last of that family on Jan. 20th.
R59, Cristobal Balenciaga was a great designer. Many of his clothes were very beautiful and elegant but, as you can see, some of his creations were really out there, eg. R58.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 13, 2021 6:11 AM |
Wow, R62. Such subtle make up. Impressive cleavage.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | January 13, 2021 6:16 AM |

[quote]Faux pas is how you spell both the plural and the singular form of the phrase. However, we do make a distinction in the pronunciation—the singular faux pas is pronounced [foh pah], but the plural faux pas is pronounced with a “z” at the end—[foh pahz].
Well, you learn something every day. Or did all you fashionistas already know this?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | January 13, 2021 4:03 PM |
I could definitely see Lady Gaga wearing that outfit, R67. Great choice.

R65 Is that pic right after one of his bankruptcies, 'cause that tux looks like a Macy's special?

Lol, R72. There was no date on the photograph but obviously it's not recent.
Melania looking too costumey, like an aristocratic 19th century traveller.

I found it. The dress at R65 is from the 2004 Met Gala. The theme was "Dangerous Liaisons". It's a black satin dress, with pleat details and a waist-cinching corset.
Wikipedia says Trump did declare bankruptcy six times between 1991 and 2009. Maybe he was penny pinching at the time.

by Anonymous | reply 78 | January 15, 2021 1:01 AM |
I don't know why Melania was criticised for this Dolce and Gabbana coat. I love it. Is it because of the $51,000 price tag? Too much conspicuous consumption?
by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 17, 2021 7:35 AM |
I look as good as I did when I was 30. You're all just jealous.
