"When You Knew" Celebrity Crush

Okay, which celebrity crush made you realize (or at least let you clue in) that you are gay:

It was watching Tom Welling on Smallville that I first discovered what pre was .........

Andy Gibb. I used to read 16 Magazine and Tiger Beat and Teen Beat as a 9 year old. It took me another three years to understand it was sexual (and much longer to really make sense of it) but I remember being fascinated by his furry chest. There were a lot of shirtless guys in those magazines, and I would stare at all those photos, but because he was hairy when nearly everyone else wasn't, he held a special fascination for me. When I started to add rock magazines into the mix a few years later, the same thing happened with Paul Stanley from Kiss.

Gregory Harrison. I couldn’t explain away why I was riveted to the opening credits of Trapper John every week...other than pure lust.

I shared this story in my first-ever Datalounge post (on a thread about childhood crushes), but as it's Christmas I hope you'll forgive me for telling it again.

Growing up, I had a lot of crushes on TV's sci-fi leading men: Mark Goddard in Lost in Space, Gary Conway and Don Matheson from Land of the Giants, David Hedison on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea... But in those days I was too young to understand what I was feeling. But later came Planet of the Apes and the super-hot James Naughton. Skip over the years to being an adult, and seeing the just-opened revival of Chicago with a friend who was dating one of the hot chorus boys. He got us in backstage after the show where the stars, including Naughton, were "receiving" (Lorenzo Lamas was sitting on a bench with me). I was in thrall, seeing the object of my young crush, up close and personal. Finally, as he was leaving I screwed up my courage and approached him, blurting out "Mr. Naughton I had a terrible crush on you back in the days of Planet of the Apes!" He smiled, said that was sweet, and gave me a big hug as he went on his way. He could easily have been a dick about it, but he was as sweet as could be.

I remember how hot I thought Parker Stevenson was in OUR TIME (1974). The movie starred he and Pamela Sue Martin as a young couple who fall in love. It’s set in 1955 at a girls’ boarding school. I just thought he was so physically beautiful. He continued to impress me a couple of years later in the film LIFEGUARD and THE HARDY BOYS series.

Season 1 Jonathan Frakes on Star Trek TNG. I was a pre-teen and recorded every episode. My nether regions would tingle whenever he was profile to the camera and you could see his bulge tenting in his Starfleet onsie.

R49 & R50 In season 3 of TNG, the male cast were given two piece uniforms with looser pants. Frakes does start to put on weight later in the show's run, but I think he looked good. Outside of season 1, I think Frakes peaks around season 4 and then he starts looking increasingly tired.

by Anonymousreply 54December 28, 2020 11:48 PM

Oh, Frakes ended the series as a hot daddy bear, but his expanding girth created a lot of problems for the show -and a lot of personal embarrassment for him.

R55, it was the same with Martin Milner on the old "Adam-12" series -- he was slim and trim and hot in the first season, then as the series continued over the years, his waist began to, um, expand a bit. Still, he was an attractive man by the time it was over, though.

I didn't "know" at the time for these 2 but I can look back and remember it being the first times I really had some unnamed feelings as a tween.

First was MATT DILLION in 1979s "Little Darlings" starring Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol who were it-girls for teens then. While they were cute, it was whenever Matt came on screen that my little heart fluttered.

I won't post a pic of Matt from then here because he was 16 in that movie ya creeps. But boy was he pretty. Pics are easy to find.

The 2nd was the next year with "Blue Lagoon" with Brook Shields and CHRISTOPHER ADKINS. All my friends went on about Brooke but shirtless loinclothed Chris is what got me. I'll post him because he was 18.

Umm, what could be wrong about posting a non-pornographic image of him from that movie and admitting that you found him attractive when you yourself were a tween? Are you joking, lamely?

And you spelled Christopher Atkins' name wrong, which is surprising, seeing as how you were/are so enamored of him.

by Anonymousreply 70December 29, 2020 5:07 PM

Joe Lando from Dr. Quinn. Now, I wouldn't say he's "when I knew," but he for sure was really my first big clue. We used to go over to my grandma's for Sunday dinner and while my brother and cousins would go off an play, I'd stay and watch Dr. Quinn with my mom and grandma. I was born in 86 so I was probably only 7 or 8 at the time but I used to get "butterflies in my stomach" when Sully was on screen.

I was half joking about a Matt Dillon pic R70. I don't know how to post 2 separate pics on one post so I went with the 18 year old. But also, no, I'm not totally comfortable posting a pic of a 16 year old boy in this specific thread no matter the context. That's a "me" issue and I'm fine with it.

Your second comment; I don't know how thinking a random guy is attractive translates into to knowing/remembering how to exactly spell his name 40 years later. That's a "you" issue.

by Anonymousreply 75December 29, 2020 10:43 PM

R75, this thread is all about what celebrities we had crushes on when we were very young, which I would not describe as prurient subject matter. So I'm glad you understand that your avoidance of posting a pic of a 16-year-old actor as he appeared in his first movie is your own issue, especially since I'm fairly certain that having lots of young audience members develop crushes on Matt Dillon et al. is one of the things the producers and directors were going for when they cast them in films.

As to your other point, I guess it's not that surprising that you wouldn't remember how to spell Christopher Atkins' name all these years later, especially since his acting career pretty much fizzled out long ago. So I apologize for that.

by Anonymousreply 76December 29, 2020 11:56 PM

R70 & R75, you seem really invested in seeing a pic of a teen boy here. If you didn't notice, all the other pics in this thread are gown men. I thought it seemed a bit off to bring in a young looking teen boy to the mix. But to reiterate, I only know how to post one pic in my post, so I picked the adult and made a silly quip about it.

But since you're so fixated on seeing pics of teen boys, I suggest you-do-you and go ahead and look for teen boy actors of 1980 on your own - it's pretty easy... unless your probation officer checks your internet usage that is.

Way to dismantle the thread, guy.

by Anonymousreply 77December 30, 2020 2:28 AM

Oops, I meant R70 and R76 for my R77 comment.

I'm sure R70 / R76 will be really upset I made a simple mistake in my number references as he is at my actor misspelling. I apologize to him for causing such distressful mental gymnastics in his very important life.

by Anonymousreply 78December 30, 2020 2:34 AM

Here, you lunatics.

Matt Dillon when I had a celebrity crush and "knew" - and I was and am younger than he is.

Now shove the willful conflation between things such as this and actual inappropriate ephebophilia. But allow me to add, to twist a nipple of the hateful Karens, that even as a child I thought he was approaching the end of his appeal at the time.

I remember wanting desperately to kiss Leonardo DiCaprio after seeing him in "Titanic" when I was around 8 years old. I didn't realize this meant I was probably gay or what that even was. As a young adolescent, though, probably around 13–14, I remember getting really turned on by Colby Donaldson, one of the contestants on "Survivor". My family had a subscription to Entertainment Weekly for some reason, but nobody ever read any of the magazines, so I ended up with them. I remember getting this edition with him on the cover (far right), and jacking off to it in my bedroom numerous times. I was mesmerized by him. Sometime during those masturbation sessions, it became very clear in my mind that I was attracted to men, and men only. Incidentally, the burly Richard Donaldson (on the left) was openly gay at that time.

Sounds like you're very familiar with such surveillance. Not surprising, since something in your makeup made you think that posting a non-pornographic frame shot or publicity photo of a 16-year-old actor from one of his films would somehow be inappropriate. Of course, that thought wouldn't even have occurred to you if....that thought hadn't occurred to you. If you know what I mean. And I didn't derail the thread, bucko. You set it on a smarmy detour with your comment "I won't post a pic of Matt from then here because he was 16 in that movie ya creeps," even if you were "joking."
