LET'S DISCUSS NOTORIOUS ROCK AND ROLL JERKS

WHO ARE THE BIGGEST JERKS IN ROCK?

by Anonymousreply 444August 7, 2022 11:49 PM

Gary Glitter is bad.

by Anonymousreply 1December 21, 2020 1:01 AM

Animal assassin, statutory rapist, and Trumptard, Ted Nugent?

by Anonymousreply 2December 21, 2020 1:02 AM

Daddy

by Anonymousreply 3December 21, 2020 1:05 AM

Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains used to beat up the groupies he would bed from time to time. He also demanded a blow job from a girl I used to know who danced at The Lusty Lady in Seattle by virtue of being THE Mr. Jerry Cantrell. When she declined he tried to get her fired.

by Anonymousreply 4December 21, 2020 1:06 AM

David Lee Roth.

by Anonymousreply 5December 21, 2020 1:19 AM

Lou Reed.

by Anonymousreply 6December 21, 2020 1:27 AM

Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, Gene Simmons, Axl Rose; James Brown;

by Anonymousreply 7December 21, 2020 1:27 AM

Ryan Adams

by Anonymousreply 8December 21, 2020 1:35 AM

I have a Lou Reed story. When I used to work for camera store on 47th street in Manhattan, Lou Reed came in, and bought an expensive SLR camera. The next day he comes in with an older model of a different camera. It was very beat up, and scratched. He claimed it was the camera he bought the day before, and was demanding a refund. He started swearing, and calling us all "dirty fucking thieving Jews" when we said we could not accept it as it was not the camera he purchased on the receipt. The owner got two big guys to muscle him out of the store. He started yelling "do you know who I am?" to which the owner said "yes! a bum! now get out!"

by Anonymousreply 9December 21, 2020 1:40 AM

Another Lou Reed story: When I was in college, I had a professor who went to graduate school in New York. She claims that in the 1960s she saw Lou Reed shoot up heroin on stage during a performance.

by Anonymousreply 10December 21, 2020 1:44 AM

Phil Collins.

by Anonymousreply 11December 21, 2020 1:46 AM

Alice Cooper is a Trump supporter. He qualifies.

by Anonymousreply 12December 21, 2020 1:53 AM

Ted Nugent and his guns

by Anonymousreply 13December 21, 2020 1:59 AM

Axl once broke a *full* bottle of wine over his neighbor's head.

by Anonymousreply 14December 21, 2020 2:05 AM

Ted Nugent and his right wing cuntiness.

by Anonymousreply 15December 21, 2020 2:13 AM

Had no idea what an anti-Semite Lou Reed was; glad I never liked him or listened to his music.

by Anonymousreply 16December 21, 2020 2:14 AM

Isn't Nugent a known child molester as in the textbook definition, how is he not rotting in a prison basement somewhere?

by Anonymousreply 17December 21, 2020 2:22 AM

Van Morrison is reputed to be bitter, mean, and nasty. I've read that his behavior is comparable to Reed's. Both big drunks. I don't know if Morrison had an enabler like Laurie Anderson.

And Nugent actually legally adopted his underage groupie so she was available to him 24/7. I wonder what became of her.

You can add draft dodger to Nugent's list of hypocritical accomplishments. I wouldn't blame young men of the era from wanting to get out of Vietnam, but he turned into a right wing creep who'd send anyone's kid off to fight senseless wars. There's also the way he got out of being drafted. He made himself look his grungy best, no personal hygiene in the prior week and while in his recruiters office took a massive dump in his pants during his interview. I wish I could come up with the reference, but I read it about 30 years ago.

There's also the bow hunting...

by Anonymousreply 18December 21, 2020 2:31 AM

Mike Love.

by Anonymousreply 19December 21, 2020 2:44 AM

Most of them old school rockers boinked 14 year olds: Bowie, Jagger, Iggy Pop, Don Henley, Jimmy Page, etc.

by Anonymousreply 20December 21, 2020 2:49 AM

Don Henley seems like an absolute dick.

by Anonymousreply 21December 21, 2020 2:51 AM

R19 Mike Love’s rant during the Beach Boys’ Rock N Roll Hall of Fame induction is always good for a laugh.

I watched a thing about Motley Crue. They seemed like a band full of drug addicted dickheads. Vince Neil killed his friend drunk driving

by Anonymousreply 23December 21, 2020 3:06 AM

Oh God, what rock star ISN't a jerk? They all tend to be assholes, creeps, even the most revered ones. They all have huge egos, are druggies/drunks, treat women like shit.

by Anonymousreply 24December 21, 2020 3:10 AM

I bet Dave Matthews is nice and Pearl Jam.

Bono's face owns this thread. I'd pay money to slap him as hard as I could. Sting is another, and while not a rock star, his wife Trudy needs a vicious slap.

by Anonymousreply 27December 21, 2020 3:19 AM

I read a news story a few years back about a woman who had volunteered for Amnesty International back in the 80s/90s. She was chosen to meet Bono at the airport and escort him to an event. She said that in the back of the limousine, Bono grabbed her and forcibly kissed her. She was horrified and let down, but kept it to herself. Years later, at an Amnesty event, she was talking with a group of women and got the courage up to mention her bad experience with Bono. She expected them to disbelieve and ostracize her. Instead, several other women related that he had done the exact same thing to them. I don't understand why he hasn't been "cancelled" based on this.

by Anonymousreply 28December 21, 2020 3:22 AM

Don Henley - Drugging and raping two teenagers in 1980. Ozzy Osbourne - tried to kill Sharon in a drug induced rage. Jimmy Page/Bowie/Nugent/Bill Wyman - bonking 14 year olds. Pete Townshend/Gary Glitter - pedos. Lou Reed/Every Beatle except for Paul/Oasis/Jack White/Josh Homme/Bjork/pretty much every member of Fleetwood Mac/Slash/Axl Rose/Cortney Love/ Billy Corgan - general physical violence.

by Anonymousreply 29December 21, 2020 3:27 AM

Jerry Lee Lewis killed one teenage wife, maybe two.

by Anonymousreply 30December 21, 2020 3:37 AM

Jim Morrison was an obnoxious SOB. He would got to parties and piss on the carpet...or in people's drinks.

Brian Jones was a piece of shit. He turned his friends onto drugs. He fathered several illegitimate children and had nothing to do with any of them. One of the mothers of his children went to the hotel where he was staying with his equally detestable girlfriend Anita Pallenberg; they stood on a balcony laughing at her while she held the baby up and begged for financial help.

There's video of Chuck Berry pissing in a groupie's mouth. What a nice guy.

ALL the members of Kiss, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, are disgusting assholes.

Jimmy Page had his goons literally kidnap little 14 year old Lori Maddox; they threw her in a limo and brought her to him. Being a dimwitted 14 year old she was flattered by this.

John Bonham, who everybody "loved", was a mean as shit drunk who would throw tv sets out of windows and beat the crap out of people.

John Lennon was a druggie who treated his first wife and son like shit, would physically abuse women, have violent temper tantrums and do things like mock crippled, mentally challenged children and call poor Brian Epstein a "queer Jew." He was also a hypocrite, living in excessive luxury while warbling lyrics like "imagine no possession" and pretending to genuinely care about political issues.

Trent Reznor had groupies eat bowls of Fruit Looks then take laxatives and shit in the bowls. I guess he got turned on by that.

Bono is a loudmouthed egomaniac who portrays himself as a devoted husband when in fact he's had numerous affairs with the likes of Christy Turlington, Andrea Corr and Winona Ryder.

by Anonymousreply 31December 21, 2020 5:12 AM

Wait, Trent Reznor would have them eat then shit in the bowls? Did he have them it the shit? Because if he only liked to watch them shit he’s not being a jerk, he just has a weird fetish. He might very well be a grade A asshole but that is not a great example unless he forced them to eat their own shit.

by Anonymousreply 32December 21, 2020 5:25 AM

Chuck berry also farts in the face of the groupie when she’s rimming him.

Linked is audio of said event.

I've worked in music for over 25 years now. Here's my gossip:

David Byrne - Cold, dismissive, and unapproachable.

Benji Madden - A prime example of the Dunning/Kruger effect.

Tom Delonge - insatiable coke-head. It fucked with his head too much, and now he's nuttier than squirrel shit.

Ariana Grande - An awful person who used to be coked out of her mind.

Adam Lambert - Constantly showed up 3 hours late to writing or recording sessions, (rolling up in a murdered out Bentley) and then disappear after an hour. Also had a major coke problem.

Miley Cyrus/Tish Cyrus - Two cunts who cost my client, and me a lot of money by skipping out on recording a Hannah Montana song after the contract had been signed, and the song was cut. Lost a publishing deal because of her.

If I think of more, I'll chime in.

by Anonymousreply 34December 21, 2020 6:04 AM

NOTHING about me?

by Anonymousreply 35December 21, 2020 6:32 AM

R34 David Byrne has Aspergers, so I'd give him a pass. Do you have any tea on Cher, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Mariah Carey, etc.?

by Anonymousreply 36December 21, 2020 7:22 AM

Two anti-jerks and one jerk:

1. Kurt Cobain. I saw him and Nirvana (no idea who he or they were at the time) in a Long Beach, CA backyard BBQ party in 1990 (may have been 91) when I was a preteen. Super nice, if very, very shy. And I've heard nothing but the same even after he became famous.

2. Lady Gaga. She lives a few doors down from my partner. He's run into her countless times (when she's there, she walks her dogs frequently; my partner does the same). My partner had no idea who she was for the longest time, but loved her just as much then as he loves her now that he knows she's Gaga.

3. Morrissey. Maybe my favorite frontman of all time in one of my top five favorite bands of all time. I was a Smiths junkie for sure. I was bartending on the pier in Santa Monica circa 2003 and he walks in with some latin twink. (I grew up in LA and at that point had met/seen/hung out with too many famous people to count. I never cared. But I did with him.) I sort of stuttered as I dropped off his beers (Corona!) and, for the first time ever in my life, said that I was a big fan to a celeb. He just scowled at me liked I killed his first born. Then shooed me away.

by Anonymousreply 37December 21, 2020 7:41 AM

Mick Jagger - erudite and intelligent. Like could honestly be a banker or politician or a schoolteacher when not "on." L'Wren, however, was said to be a hot nightmare.

by Anonymousreply 38December 21, 2020 3:07 PM

^There is a documentary about Donald Cammell, who wrote and (actually) directed Nicholas Roeg's *PERFORMANCE*, among other films, available on youtube. M. Jagger is interviewed in it briefly, mostly about life in London during the Sixties, and it's abundantly clear from that interview how smart Jagger is, not just crafty or clever, but very knowledgeable, intelligent, and well educated; it's an impressive side of him that is not often found in interviews with him. The film itself is one of the best documentaries I've seen about the Sixties.

by Anonymousreply 39December 21, 2020 3:23 PM

Or about me, Joni!

by Anonymousreply 40December 21, 2020 3:28 PM

Elvis Costello once called Ray Charles the n-word.

by Anonymousreply 41December 21, 2020 10:09 PM

Ted Nugent prefers females 11-16

by Anonymousreply 42December 21, 2020 10:20 PM

Lindsey Buckingham - Alcoholic, beat Stevie Nicks and choked her.

by Anonymousreply 43December 21, 2020 10:24 PM

R33 Chuck Berry is UGLY

by Anonymousreply 44December 21, 2020 10:29 PM

R43 lol Stevie attacked him first while high on Klonopin.

by Anonymousreply 45December 21, 2020 10:29 PM

The "Saint Stevie Nicks" thing so funny to me. She rivalled most men in rock in terms of her love of alcohol, drugs, sex, and violence. I guess she looks innocent with her big brown doe eyes so she gets a pass.

by Anonymousreply 46December 21, 2020 10:31 PM

LB beat her many times before that night, and Stevie wasn't on Klonopin yet at that point. She didn't get on it until the 1987 tour started, after LB thankfully left.

by Anonymousreply 47December 21, 2020 10:32 PM

Dionne Warwick likes to smoke hog legs while stirring shit on Twitter and acting like a big twat to all of humanity.

by Anonymousreply 48December 21, 2020 10:33 PM

R47 and you know that how? There was one other incident that I know of in New Zealand. I used to work in the biz and have seen Stevie Nicks firsthand beat a security guard on the chest with her firsts while high out of her fucking mind and eyeliner running down her face like Alice Cooper.

by Anonymousreply 49December 21, 2020 10:34 PM

Fat lesbians love to simp for Stevie Nicks.

by Anonymousreply 50December 21, 2020 10:35 PM

R36 Not much interaction with any that you mentioned. Also, David Byrne's self-diagnosed Aspies is not an excuse for his treatment of people in the industry.

Honestly, I've met/worked with a lot of rock stars in my time at record labels and then management. It's very rare that I have a bad impression or interaction with musicians. If there's a thread on cool rockstars, then I have a ton of stories.

by Anonymousreply 51December 21, 2020 11:28 PM

r27 "Bono's face owns this thread. I'd pay money to slap him as hard as I could."

LOL! I love this, thank you.

by Anonymousreply 52December 21, 2020 11:31 PM

R51 Post some anecdotes about cool rock stars! I think it's good to have a balance.

by Anonymousreply 53December 21, 2020 11:40 PM

R51 This is a good thread for such stories!

by Anonymousreply 54December 21, 2020 11:45 PM

R34 is David Byrne really that bad? I know that many people find his treatment of his former bandmates appalling.

by Anonymousreply 55December 21, 2020 11:47 PM

The list of who isn’t an asshole would be much shorter. I am guessing under ten names.

by Anonymousreply 56December 22, 2020 12:11 AM

Another vote for racist Jerry Lee Lewis, another for Lennon who treated his first wife and son so badly, Jimi Hendrix who also beat women up, and did anyone upthread mention Keith Moon?

How is it that the PC Brigade isn't out trying to cancel Lennon, Lewis, Hendrix, et al.?

by Anonymousreply 57December 22, 2020 12:25 AM

R22: Based on that, I blame Disney for making Elton John fat.

by Anonymousreply 58December 22, 2020 12:56 AM

And this, too…

R53 & R54

Okay, if you insist. My favorite artist I've ever worked with is Mavis Staples. She makes you strive to be a better person. I would take a fucking bullet for Mavis. She's THAT special to me.

Dave Grohl - Never got to work with him, but have had many encounters. He's affable, has a great sense of humor, and just overall a great dude. He can BBQ the shit out of ribs and brisket too!

Green Day - Had an artist tour with them during the American Idiot tour. I know some people think BIlly Joe Armstrong is a dick, but he was always VERY cool with me. Tre and Mike were also quite chill.

Mark Hoppus - Wicked smart, friendly, always a great conversation with him.

Stephen Pearcy - Quiet, but really nice. His daughter was a fan of an artist I used to manage. He would show up to all the LA and San Diego shows. He offered great advice and told fun stories.

Plain White T's - You may remember them as the "Hey There Delilah" band. I remember them just being super nice, easy to work with, open to ideas. I was their publicist at the time, and they couldn't get arrested before the hit. They didn't seem to care about good or bad reviews. I think I took it more personal than they did.

by Anonymousreply 60December 22, 2020 1:06 AM

Van Morrison is routinely cited as the biggest asshole on music.

by Anonymousreply 61December 22, 2020 1:10 AM

More on David Byrne. He seems mild mannered...

by Anonymousreply 62December 22, 2020 1:14 AM

R62 He fired his manager for bringing him an offer in the 9 figures to reunite Talking Heads. His manager was only doing his job. He constantly tries to screw the rest of the band over on songwriting credits, most recently in the HBO version of American Utopia. 80% of Talking Heads' songs were written by the whole band. Maybe not the lyrics, but a lot of the grooves, melodies, and vamps.

He talks so much about Talking Heads being "behind him" and he's not into "nostalgia" tours. Yet half his set are Talking Heads' songs. American Utopia could have easily been a reunion, and the band would let DB have full creative control over the show. They wouldn't even have a problem playing his solo songs.

by Anonymousreply 63December 22, 2020 1:31 AM

I can see an 8 figure offer for reunion, but 9 seems excessive.

by Anonymousreply 64December 22, 2020 1:35 AM

R64 That included merchandising, film rights, and recording rights. Think about which company offers turnkey tours that loves to overpay.

by Anonymousreply 65December 22, 2020 1:40 AM

R64 Song writing credits are notorious fraught. From what I've read David Byrne would come up with a vocal melody and then the band would work together to provide an instrumental. Unfortunately, vocal melody and lyrics are enough to warrant full song writing credit. It's not fair and I know so many bassists and drummers who were absolutely fucked over by narcissistic lead singers.

by Anonymousreply 66December 22, 2020 1:53 AM

I'll drop no names here, but let me just say that my daughter's vagina bone took 6 months to heal.

by Anonymousreply 67December 22, 2020 2:02 AM

R62 The bass player Tina Weymouth quit over his allegedly sexist behavior.

by Anonymousreply 68December 22, 2020 2:03 AM

R66 You're wrong. Topline only warrants partial credit. I deal with this on a daily basis. The band as a whole came up with a lot of the hooks. It wasn't just DB. Once In A Lifetime was more Jerry and Tina than DB.

by Anonymousreply 69December 22, 2020 2:08 AM

R58 It seemed like a bit of a traumatic evening for all those rock stars. Bob Dylan shaded Mike Love during his acceptance speech. And Dylan might be one of the biggest assholes IN the RRFM.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 70December 22, 2020 2:12 AM

R66 Also, for a bit of clarification, the songwriting splits have been settled a long time ago. The band splits most of the songs equally.

I'm talking about the actual credit. DB did not write Burning Down The House by himself. Yet, he credits himself on American Utopia as the sole writer. That pisses off the rest of the band. It's his fucking ego.

by Anonymousreply 71December 22, 2020 2:14 AM

R69 Of course I don't know the specifics, but from what I've been told, back in the 60s and 70s melody and lyrics were enough to warrant full credit but that standard has sinced changed, which is why modern tracks sometimes have up to 7 songwriters, particularly in rap and r&b where rhythm is just as important as melody. Please enlighten me. I find all of this stuff fascinating.

by Anonymousreply 72December 22, 2020 2:15 AM

R68 I find David Byrne solo boring. Tina's playing style and the unique parts she came up with was so fundamental to the Talking Heads sound.

by Anonymousreply 73December 22, 2020 2:18 AM

R71 wouldn't a lot of what listeners hear as 'writing' actually be arrangement?

by Anonymousreply 74December 22, 2020 2:20 AM

Was David Byrne always an asshole, or did something push him over the edge? The success of Stop Making Sense?

by Anonymousreply 75December 22, 2020 2:21 AM

Who are the nice rockers?

by Anonymousreply 76December 22, 2020 2:23 AM

Elvis might have been the nicest going by stories I have read/heard.

by Anonymousreply 77December 22, 2020 2:25 AM

Dave Grohl is supposedly nice but he's corny and his music is bland. He's the quintessential nice dude that everyone likes (except for Courtney Love).

by Anonymousreply 78December 22, 2020 2:27 AM

I still remember when the Foo Fighters supported an AIDS denial charity. No idea if they support it now (I doubt it), but I remember thinking that was an... interesting stance.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 79December 22, 2020 2:30 AM

R72 In the '60s publishing splits were given to the DJs for putting a song in heavy rotation. Songwriting credit was always given to "those in the room" who contributed.

R74. Nope. The composition includes, melodies, and lyrics. If someone uses just the lyrics to a song, the lyricists isn't the only one who gets paid. The composers of the song all get paid a certain percentage, predetermined usually by a split sheet or an oral agreement.

by Anonymousreply 80December 22, 2020 2:30 AM

Elvis physically abused groupies and some even had to seek emergency treatment.

by Anonymousreply 81December 22, 2020 2:31 AM

Proof, R81?

by Anonymousreply 82December 22, 2020 2:34 AM

This woman became a friend of Elvis because she used to hang out at the gate of his house. She has very nice comments about him.

Another Anecdote about David Byrne:

Bernie Worrell was dying of cancer. Jerry Harrison and a few friends organized a benefit to pay for Bernie's bills. All 4 members of the band were in attendance, and David refused to get on stage to perform with Chris, Tina, and Jerry. Not even for Bernie, the unofficial 5th member of the band.

by Anonymousreply 84December 22, 2020 2:42 AM

R18 Steven Tyler also became the legal guardian of a groupie to keep her available (how many rocks stars have done that, I wonder?) and from the stories I've heard, it sounds like her parents sold her to him. He also sabotaged her birth control and forced her to get an abortion. She's now super-religious.

by Anonymousreply 85December 22, 2020 2:47 AM

R31 I remember back in the mid-90s Winona Ryder was photographed constantly at U2 shows, like she was following the band around. Now I know why.

by Anonymousreply 86December 22, 2020 2:51 AM

Anthony Kiedis is a douchebag who sleeps with teenagers. Marilyn Manson is an abusive creep.

by Anonymousreply 87December 22, 2020 2:54 AM

R25 Pearl Jam is well-known for being extremely nice and rather dull. The only gossip on them is that Eddie Vedder's first wife cheated on him and left him for another man. When he hooked up with his second wife, a lot of his frau fans got mad because she was a model, and they complained he turned into a "typical rock star."

I'm interested in hearing Stevie Nicks stories. I'll never understand why out of all the artists of her era, all the middle-aged women and young hipsters love her.

by Anonymousreply 88December 22, 2020 2:57 AM

R80 Adding a really tasty baseline that deviates from the main melody is still technically arrangement. Guitarists who write solos or harmonic fills are technically not songwriters, nor are drummers credited when they add really cool drum fills. Take Dreams by Fleetwood Mac for instance. Stevie Nicks just wrote 2 chords repeating. Yet there are organ and guitar arrangements layered over top that make it sound like it's more complex. Adding notes or chords to songs doesn't necessarily mean someone will be credited as a song writer.

by Anonymousreply 89December 22, 2020 2:57 AM

R88 She was on American Horror Story and it resurrected her career. Blame Ryan Murphy. I much prefer Debbie Harry.

by Anonymousreply 92December 22, 2020 3:14 AM

R89 That's not what happens in the real world, dude. If the bassline, keyboards, guitars are part of the hook(s) (which can deviate from the chord progression or melody) then they can claim songwriting credit. How it really happens is publishing splits are usually pre-determined by band agreement, or the songwriting team prior to the session starting. Splitting hairs on who wrote which parts and giving minute percentages is (usually) no longer the case. Soloists, not part of the writing get paid by sideman agreements. There are times when they might not get "credit" but will participate in the publishing splits. I manage Grammy winning songwriters and producers.

In the case of Talking Heads, the agreements were airtight and the band were all under the same publishing company, which was setup by Seymore Stein.

by Anonymousreply 93December 22, 2020 3:17 AM

How did it get this far down in the comments with NO mention of Phil Spector?

Also, clearly the guys from Great White were dicks. What an asshole move to burn alive your last hundred fans.

I adore Ronnie Spector's music, but will never forget this:

[quote]As for what became of Ronnie’s adopted children with Phil, the eldest, Donte, was last reported to be HIV-positive, homeless and living in a car blocks away from Phil’s mansion in Beverly Hills. He and his brother Gary have both spoken on the record about the physical and sexual abuse they claim to have suffered at Phil’s hands. Ronnie claims to have a good relationship with her adopted sons – especially Donte, “the half-breed like me.” She pauses. [bold]“Four years ago, Donte’s saying, ‘Mom, I have AIDS.’ I don’t know if that’s true – he may be trying to distract me from what I’m doing.”[/bold]

A forty something Gregg Allman saw a 16 year old Shannon Wilsey in a restaurant (I think she was with her mother) and asked for an introduction. He took her on tour with him as a sperm receptacle; she said she would watch porn videos with him on his tour bus and he supposedly introduced her to drugs. Of course little Shannon became "Savannah" the porn star groupie. Later, when her life was on the skids she went to one of his concerts and tried to reconnect with him but he would have nothing to do with her. She later committed suicide. Would she have ended up the way she did if she hadn't been seduced by a rock star old enough to be her father? I somehow think he life may have turned out differently if she hadn't be used by Gregg Allman.

R96 and her mother allowed this?

by Anonymousreply 101December 23, 2020 3:31 AM

"and her mother allowed this?"

Yep. Obviously a permissive parent. Maybe she was star struck, too. Kind of reminds me of the mothers who turned their little boys over to Michael Jackson. Anyway, Shannon Wilsey had no good role models in her life; her father was absent and her mother let her do anything. When she was an adult her father contacted her and wanted to have a relationship with her but she shut him down telling him "where where you" when she was sleeping with a man in his forties when she was a teenager (presumably she was referring to Allman) and told him "I HATE YOU!" The girl was so messed up she became a porn star and a druggie. I think it's easy to understand why.

by Anonymousreply 102December 23, 2020 3:42 AM

R99: The story has been debunked by Tucker himself. He was sick of touring and coming up with new material. He became an electrician which is probably better than playing Community Days with the Grass Roots in Naperville.

R16 - Lou Reed was Jewish, his father had changed his name from Rabinowitz to Reed.

Doesn't stop him being self-hating I guess.

A friend once saw Lou Reed live, apparently someone in the audience coughed or something and Reed stopped the show until the offending person was removed.

by Anonymousreply 107December 23, 2020 2:52 PM

R107, for anyone who is familiar with Lou Reed's catalogue, the cough was probably the best part of the show.

by Anonymousreply 108December 23, 2020 4:18 PM

Melody considered more essential than harmony, even though a different harmonic arrangement can make a dull melody sound great and vice versa. For instance, Judy Collin’s version of “Both Sides Now” is more harmonically complex than Joni’s original, since the arranger added a lot of chords that were implied by the melody, but that Joni didn’t come up with. Still Joni is credited as the original writer.

by Anonymousreply 114December 23, 2020 8:28 PM

I think the most notorious jerks are the people that pay to see some of these artists in their current state...ages 70+ making fools of themselves on stage, should be arrested for trying to act young and that they still "have what it takes."

by Anonymousreply 115December 23, 2020 8:51 PM

R115 The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, and Fleetwood Mac then.

Lou Reed is awesome. WTF is r6 on about?

by Anonymousreply 117December 23, 2020 10:07 PM

David Byrne is a brilliant musician but douchey.

But he's not Axl Rose/ James Brown-level douchey. That's a whole, other league than these minor diva moments you guys are citing.

by Anonymousreply 118December 23, 2020 10:11 PM

Lou Reed could indeed be an asshole. But 1) people who thought they saw him shooting heroin on stage saw him -pretending- to shoot up heroin on stage. Well known fact about that. 2) He was sober before he met Laurie Anderson. 3) He was of course himself Jewish.

by Anonymousreply 119December 23, 2020 10:12 PM

(115) I totally agree, nothing more hilarious than seeing Mick Jagger doing his "act" at his age. Probably backstage doctor's, nurses, stretchers, EMT personnel..

by Anonymousreply 120December 23, 2020 11:04 PM

Mick Jagger is awesome on stage! I've seen them in concert before and he moves like a person half his age. And he sounds great! He puts on a great show.

r119 Lou Reed continued to drink when he was with Laurie, which was revealed after his death.

And didn't he ruin his new liver too?

by Anonymousreply 122December 23, 2020 11:23 PM

R119 - Do you mean sober as in clean from heroin? I read a couple of stories of Reed becoming shit-faced and abusive in public with Anderson apologizing and wrangling him out.

I never thought of Madonna as a rock star. A pop star, maybe. But she always seemed to me to be just some kind of entertainment performer who wanted to do everything (singing, dancing, film acting, theater) and get lauded for all of it. Aside from all that she IS a monstrous human being.

Has anyone else heard the Van Morrison/Eric Clapton anti-masking song? IDIOTS.

by Anonymousreply 127December 24, 2020 3:42 AM

r127, yes, and David Crosby has called him out on it.

Van Morrison is a noted jackass. As was Lou Reed. Jim Morrison, too, though he was more of an obnoxious drunk and supposedly more tame when sober, which was never, so he was pretty much always a jerk as well.

I will add John Phillips, who was a philanderer, grifter, hedonist, and incest-perpetrator!

Classic-ish rock nice guys (per friend in business) include Dave Grohl, Graham Nash (CSN - Our House), Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, the Rolling Stones (great to work for apparently), and -- not classic rock at all but Snoop Dogg. My friend dropped her suitcase and it exploded all over the airport carousel area. He stooped down to help her pick it up and then flashed that grin. She later sat next to him on the plane and he was very nice.

That's all I got.

by Anonymousreply 128December 24, 2020 4:27 AM

Since the R&R HoF is a joke, I don't think that's much of an achievement, Madge.

by Anonymousreply 129December 24, 2020 4:42 AM

Regarding David Byrne, I read recently that he didn’t think Tina Weymouth could play and wanted her to “audition” after the band had released at least one album!

Interesting then that Rolling Stone lists her as 29th of the greatest bassists ever. For context, Sting is #32. Was this pandering?

[R47] Prove it. Stevie Nicks WAS NOT a "battered wife." She was very close to her parents and they knew Lindsey well and loved him (Stevie herself has said this repeatedly in interviews). I doubt Stevie's parents - including her very successful CEO father - would have tolerated their little princess being beaten. If there was violence in the Buckingham/Nicks relationship neither were blameless - that's why Stevie has never "gone there." Police have never been called on Lindsey and he's never been charged with domestic violence. I'm not claiming that he was an angel but he wasn't nearly the ogre DL likes to claim he was.

by Anonymousreply 140December 28, 2020 9:41 PM

[R16] Lou Reed was Jewish (the real family surname being Rabinowitz). While there are anti-Semitic Jews and I'm not excusing his slur to the camera store people some context would hurt. A total asshole to be sure and wildly overrated. Can't sing, can't play.

by Anonymousreply 141December 28, 2020 9:46 PM

I posted this in the Lou Reed thread, but:

I can't remember the interviewer (Terry Gross?), but Lou Reed once reduced a female journalist to tears.

I've also read stories of him abusing employees at venues and Laurie calling to apologize for him.

I wonder if Laurie has the self-awareness to be embarrassed by the way she enabled him.

by Anonymousreply 142December 28, 2020 9:55 PM

Also:

[quote]According to a new interview in The Daily Beast, Lou Reed was anything but a stand up guy. The Velvet Underground frontman is the subject of Howard Sounes’ latest biography, Notes from the Velvet Underground: The Life of Lou Reed. Sounes reports that Reed was “a monster” who regularly abused women and casually used harsh racial slurs.

[quote]The accusations stem from interviews with more than 140 of Reed’s friends, past girlfriends, wives, family members and associates. “He would, like, pin you up against a wall,” his ex-wife Betty Kronstad explained. “Tussle you. Hit you… shake you… And then one time he actually gave me a black eye.” An old friend from school furthered the allegations, speaking about an incident in which he brought a girlfriend to dinner. “She would say something. He’d get pissed off at what she said and smash her around the back of the head,” he said.

[quote]Other aggressive acts came in verbal form. An old friend of Reed’s told Sounes that he had called Bob Dylan a “pretentious kike.” He had also openly told a journalist “I don’t like n—-rs like Donna Summer.”

[R155] I do have a foggy memory of that....

by Anonymousreply 156December 29, 2020 4:07 PM

Lindsey Buckingham’s long time love Carol Ann Harris wrote a fantastic tell all about the band (Storms) and what it was like to be with Lindsey at the height of Fleetwood Mac mania. He beat her as well. He was a deeply tortured creative who sucked the air out of every room he entered and made the making of every studio album and tour an absolutely hellscape.

by Anonymousreply 157December 29, 2020 4:14 PM

Sounds like his co-workers were even more deeply tortured.

by Anonymousreply 158December 29, 2020 4:28 PM

[R157] Carol Ann Harris is not a reliable narrator as she was coked out of her mind throughout much of her relationship with Lindsey, who was forced to kick her out because her drug habit was so bad. There are legions of people who've worked with Lindsey who love and respect him and who appreciate his genius. He's also unusually generous - he could have take additional credit on many song but didn't. Do the last 33 years of Lindsey's career matter (from Tango in the Night on), or just the short intervals in which he behaved badly under enormous stress and pressure? I'm sure you're all a bunch of blameless angels who've never done harm to anyone, intentionally or not. The digital mob is highly selective and unforgiving and always has its index finger pointed away from itself. I would have slapped Stevie Nicks too.

by Anonymousreply 159December 29, 2020 4:33 PM

Lindsey wrote a song about Carol Ann's drug use on GO INSANE called I MUST GO ("Hey little girl, leave that little drug alone").

by Anonymousreply 160December 29, 2020 4:35 PM

I'm sorry if it was mentioned above but had to Jim Morrison. He'd be even worse if he lived longer but a beligerant drunk who thinks they're a genius is thoroughly insufferable.

Dishonorable mention to Don Henley the most bitter twat in the R&R Hall of fame, and Axl Rose for being a pithy frontman as well as a vindictive petty bitch.

by Anonymousreply 161December 29, 2020 4:42 PM

[R161] Jim Morrison's poetry was risibly bad. He was a beautiful and gifted performer but that period didn't last long. In retrospect Rock and Roll stardom was the worst thing that could have happened to him as a person, but then again, he did achieve the "immortality" of stardom (insert the laughter of the Gods here). One of the really sad things about his story is that it seems he was never really able to enjoy his success - his rise to stardom coincided with his descent into drugs and booze and he was a pariah in the music industry by the time he died, very stupidly, at age 27. His lousy, senseless death speaks for itself.

I vacillate on the question of the validity of their relationship, r164. I think he presented himself publicly as something he wasn't in the last decade of his life -- to wit, sober. I imagine Laurie did a lot of damage control, both before and after his death. Given the way he treated everyone in his orbit, it wouldn't surprise me if the relationship was lowkey abusive. I've read accounts of him treating her poorly in public.

She is a little ... out there.

Gina, got on her knees, then she bowed to Jerry's much worshiped dick. It was well known in certain rock circles that Jerry is hung.

I don't think AIC were lame at all. Their Unplugged record is excellent. I even told Jerry that, he said AIC got more fans when they did the unplugged record!

Who the fuck cares about labeling any music. Music should simply be enjoyed. I cannot stand when bands and singers must be labeled. Good music stands the test of time.

R191 How was Kurt a bad singer? Unless you're only into technicality. He was great as both a punk singer and a pop singer. And his lyrics make band's like Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains look ridiculous. Like something taken out of an edgy teenager diary. Those bands took themselves too seriously. Especially Pearl Jam. Nothing sexy, unpredictable or dangerous about them. While Nirvana haid a great sense of self-irony. Dave Grohl is a great drummer, one of the best ever. But a singer and guitar player? Come on. Foo Fighters are a lame arena rock, budweiser commercial background music. He may be million times better at guitar than Cobain when it comes to technicality, but technicality don't mean shit in rock n roll. Some of the best bands were the ones where members barely knew how to play and some of the worst ones are the ones with technically skilled professional musicans that make soulless music

by Anonymousreply 195December 29, 2020 9:11 PM

R 192, I'm not going to argue with you.

I'm entitled to my opinion that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana were extremely overrated. We also have have to thank Kurt for inflicting that no talent self-absorbed junkie Courtney Love on the world.

There are so many deserving talented and original musicians out there, people who have hustled for years for their big break, yet we get a tedious asshole like Courtney Love pushed on the music buying public. Most of 'her' early songs were likely written by Kurt. Where is her talent? All wrapped up in her being a tedious junkie and plastic surgery addict?

I wonder how trained actresses felt when Love essentially played a version of herself in that movie about Larry Flynt! Please do not bring up Cher wanting to act and becoming an Oscar winning actress, that a lot of singers do end up becoming good actors and actresses blah, blah, blah. Cher actually wanted to be an actress before Sonny turned her into a rock singer.

A friend did some graphic design work for David Byrne. Back and forth, back and forth, finally, he approved the design. My friend billed him and waited and waited. He called his "people" and was told "David doesn't pay for mistakes." My friend wrote it off. I said you should've told her "He doesn't pay for mistakes? I did for his last two albums."

by Anonymousreply 198December 29, 2020 10:10 PM

That whole Factory scene around Warhol was so fucked up. You only have to read those bios on Warholstars.org. If one of their friends died of an overdose, suicide or otherwise tragically young, these people would just carry on as though nothing happened. That whole late 60s/early 70s scene was one big hurricane of glitter, heroin, hustlers, bad clothes, bad ethics and bad hygiene.

by Anonymousreply 199December 29, 2020 10:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 200December 29, 2020 10:14 PM

In hindsight I think Nirvana were indeed overrated. Alt-rock bands like Stereolab, early Mercury Rev or even early Smashing Pumpkins were far more interesting.

by Anonymousreply 201December 29, 2020 10:29 PM

That Trent Renzor story is not how the poster presented it. NIN and opening act Jim Rose Circus Sideshow and Marilyn Manson were partying hard on the Self Destruct Tour in 94. The Jim Rose guys dared groupies to take an enema and placed bets on who would go first. This was done to impress the other bands and for hedonistic clout. Either Mr. lifto (the Jim Rose performer who could lift bricks with his cock ring - how much fun...) or The Enigma (the fully tattooed performer) said he would eat the cereal bowl the groupies relieved their enemas into. Parts of this story are on film in music documentaries about the bands. Trent did however seriously fuck over Tori Amos by basically throwing her away after hooking up for a short time, and rumor has always been that she never really got over him. Another reason Tori hates Courtney Love - because Courtney had Trent for fun and Tori despised her for it and wrote negative songs about her. Essentially writing more of her weak ass lesbian-esque bullshit music like some injured fawn.

It wasn't me. I've got to say, some people simply cannot separate a musician's art from their personal life. It's difficult to do, I try to appreciate the person's music and not get too involved with their personal shit. Unless they're a rabid homophobe, a racist, a misogynist or a ReThug, then I stop being fan.

"Another reason Tori hates Courtney Love - because Courtney had Trent for fun and Tori despised her for it."

Courtney Love never "had" Trent Reznor. She They knew each other but they never fucked, according to him (I believe him). He was quoted as saying "I didn't want to be her boyfriend and now she harasses me." She used the same tactics she used with Kurt Cobain; barraged him with phone messages, wrote him, faxed him, laid siege to him. She tried to get into his hotel room; I heard he escaped through a window rather than see her. Really pissed that he would have none of her, she railed at him "Nine Inch Nails? More like Three Inch Nails!" She claimed to have fucked him but was "slumming." She also claimed to have been impregnated him; the fetus was supposedly aborted or miscarried. I'm no fan of Trent Reznor but I believe him when he said he didn't fuck her. He knew better than to get involved with someone as totally crazy as she is.

by Anonymousreply 209December 30, 2020 12:34 AM

The usual suspects were already mentioned: Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton (fucking racist scumbag), Axl Rose. Liam Gallagher was not exactly a jerk, just really, really stupid. Damon Albarn (Blur) was a jerk, so was Pulp's Jarvis Cocker (I assume it was the drugs talking).

Speaking of the Smashing Pumpkins, my best friend's job was to procure drugs and prostitutes for them back in the 90s while they were on tour. The hookers were not for the guys, they were for D'arcy.

by Anonymousreply 216December 30, 2020 2:20 AM

R204 That reminds me, I heard the tail-end of a radio interview with Billy Corgan and the interviewer referred to him as "WILLIAM Corgan." I guess we're supposed to call him that now, not Billy. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 217December 30, 2020 2:25 AM

Hole opened for NIN in 95. And yes he and Courtney had their fling. This is around the time Courtney also got with Twiggy/Jeordie from Marilyn Manson. Trent has hated Courtney ever since that tour. And yes Trent hates that it happened. The only person he ended up hating more than Courtney was Brian/Marilyn Manson eventually. Trent was shooting heroin and strung out just as much as Courtney by the end of that 95 tour (and didn't get his shit together until the end of that decade). Twiggy/Jeordie has often joked about having Courtney around the time Trent had her. Most of these people deserved one another.

by Anonymousreply 218December 30, 2020 3:15 AM

"And yes he and Courtney had their fling. This is around the time Courtney also got with Twiggy/Jeordie from Marilyn Manson. Trent has hated Courtney ever since that tour. And yes Trent hates that it happened. "

He has publicly stated that he did NOT fuck that skank. When told she said she was pregnant with his child he said "That would have been the second Immaculate Conception." He said he didn't fuck her and I believe him. I think she dearly wanted him to replace Kurt, but he didn't want her. She doesn't take rejection very easily, so she railed against him. Between the two, Reznor is definitely the more credible.

Courtney Love also at one time strongly implied that she was fucking Brad Pitt and that he gave her a big diamond ring. When questioned, a bewildered Pitt said "I've hung out with Courtney" but seemed to have no idea that she was saying they were in a "relationship." She is a pathological liar.

by Anonymousreply 219December 30, 2020 3:35 AM

What's the story on Trent Reznor? Is he bisexual?

by Anonymousreply 220December 30, 2020 3:47 AM

Dave Grohl legit seems like a good guy.

Reznor was a drugged out mess in the 90s. So it's at least theoretically possible he and Love took drugs and fucked and he blacked some or all of it out;

by Anonymousreply 222December 30, 2020 3:55 AM

I re-watched The Last Waltz this summer (I hadn't seen it since my father - who was a big fan of all of those musicians) and kind of enjoyed it, but I made the mistake about reading about it afterward. I had no idea that The Band had such a contentious break-up. I guess I somehow missed the detail that Robbie Robertson and Martin Scorsese were holed up in some mansion for months high on coke and editing the film. Which apparently resulted in it being very Robertson-focused. I *also* didn't know that Robbie Robertson's MIC wasn't even plugged in, so the documentary constantly shows him singing into an unplugged mic... making him look like a "singer." I really didn't think The Band were not interesting until doing a bit of digging.

Anyway... I really like The Band's cover of Atlantic City (w/o Robbie Robertson, of course).

It's funny to hear Pamela Des Barres blather about what she thought was her great romance with Jimmy Page. She believed he was considering marrying her. She had (and still has) the mentality of a dipsy-doodle teenager. In her memoir "I'm With The Band", she said that a girl who was "seeing" the married Robert Plant told her that Plant said "You're the best thing Jimmy's found and he knows it!" Very junior high school, huh? At any rate their great love affair went bust when he dumped her for the 14 year old Lori Maddox. To this day Pamela Des Barres rehashes sexual encounters that happened decades ago and although she was nothing more than a convenient piece of ass for Page she still believes they were once two kids "in love" and that if she had to have her heart get broken it was wonderful to have it get broken by Jimmy Page. Dumb groupie.

by Anonymousreply 224December 30, 2020 4:17 AM

I don't think of myself as a prude, but I just feel second hand embarrassment when I read about groupies for some reason. Good for them for getting so much good dick in their prime, though.

by Anonymousreply 225December 30, 2020 4:20 AM

"So it's at least theoretically possible he and Love took drugs and fucked and he blacked some or all of it out."

I don't think that happened. I think the affair was a figment of Courtney Love's very active imagination.

by Anonymousreply 226December 30, 2020 4:21 AM

"Good for them for getting so much good dick in their prime, though."

I wouldn't call it "good dick." Active dick maybe, since musicians are hounds. I wouldn't think that big rock stars are particularly good lovers. Their narcissism is too great.

What gets me about the Lindsey-Stevie arguments is that the Lindsey stans will dismiss everything bad about him, saying he was only bad on a few rare occasions and everyone with stories about him is lying, as if that's even plausible, then they call Stevie stans "dyke" and "lesbian" as insults.

They're obviously just a bunch of homophobic lying fans and I wish they'd go away. I'd like to have a real discussion about the whole Fleetwood Mac thing, not one that's 50% "fuck off fat dyke basic bitches."

by Anonymousreply 231December 30, 2020 6:08 AM

R231 I'm not a Lindsey stan, I can just see past the "Lindsey was the only bad one" narrative that deluded Stevie sniffers constantly push. That manipulative cokehead is not and has never been a victim. She was the Courtney Love of the '70s.

by Anonymousreply 232December 30, 2020 7:44 AM

by Anonymousreply 236December 30, 2020 10:44 AM

Nikki Sixx. Thread closed.

Seriously, no greater waste of oxygen has ever walked the Holocene. He basically killed Vanity and then had the audacity to jeer at Prince about his sexuality, which is reason enough for gays to hate him, but then there’s every other fucking thing he’s ever done or said.

A few examples: Nikki once told a little preteen girl fan over a radio phone-in that he “likes 12-year olds, because their bones crack when you put it in.” He tried to guilt Vince Neil about the latter’s infant daughter dying of cancer, and then later told his own pregnant teenage daughter that she was a worthless slut and threw her out of his house. Then there’s all the people he endangered with his assaults, reckless driving, and recreational drug use as well as encouraging messed-up lonely poor kids without his money or systems of support to do these things too. He lied about being a heroin addict to sell a book to the tune of millions, and later exploited real addicts and homeless people for a photographic project he also sold for big profits. He cheats collaborators out of cash, and then slanders them in press. He’s the biggest corporate stooge, but has crafted this cynical image of an anarchistic rockstar to exonerate himself and boost his fragile incel little-boy ego. He makes his band mates Vince & Tommy Lee (both misogynistic, homophobic scum in their own right) look like relatively nice decent guys by comparison.

I’m not a violent, bitter or vengeful person by nature. I usually couldn’t care less about famous people in pop culture or what they do with their fame and fortune, but I would pay money (and I don’t have lint on my wall right now) for the chance to spend a few hours royally fucking Sixx up in an alleyway and spitting on him at intervals.

Speaking of Ted Nugent, he has been conspicuously silent for quite a while. At least I haven't heard of him running his mouth in a few years. Lou Reed was unbalanced from a relatively early age. He had a mental breakdown in college that resulted in him being administered electroshock therapy. All the dope and booze for many decades certainly didn't help his mental or emotional situation.

by Anonymousreply 245December 30, 2020 12:07 PM

I think Lou Reed faked mental illness to a degree. If he’d really been seriously ill, he would’ve ended up like Syd Barrett from the Pink Floyd. Reed always seemed to go out of his way to be mean to people. He knew what he was doing.

by Anonymousreply 246December 30, 2020 12:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 247December 30, 2020 12:39 PM

I liked the Pumpkins because they weren’t the umpteenth alt-rock band to be influenced by punk rock. The whole punk rock movement seemed very doctrinarian to me; they were to rock music what serial composers were to contemporary classical music. The Pumpkins seemed like an intriguing mix of classic rock, prog and alternative and had a somewhat mysterious image. I only liked their first two/three albums though,

by Anonymousreply 248December 30, 2020 12:49 PM

Not a jerk, but why did Phil Lynott die so young? He was the songwriter of Thin Lizzy, wrote heaps of fantastic songs. First Irish Black rock star, good looking, charismatic, charming.

by Anonymousreply 253December 30, 2020 6:49 PM

I sometimes wonder if there was some odd S&M element of the Lou Reed/Laurie Anderson pairing. They were both a bit off. It might explain her unyielding devotion to him.

by Anonymousreply 254December 30, 2020 7:46 PM

[R231] It's clear that the DL faction that's seething with misandry (and there are A LOT of them) looks for any chance to condemn men, which manifests itself by often making absurd, unsubstantiated claims about male celebrities, Lindsey included. This is a man who's been with the same woman for 33 years and has raised three attractive, fully-functional children who obviously love him. Lindsey is very close with his family and has written lovingly about them on his records. He often expresses gratefulness for his family in interviews and talks of how lucky he was to have a family late in life when he least expected it. The only person in Fleetwood Mac who has a problem with Lindsey Buckingham is, not surprisingly, Stevie Nicks, who in contrast to Lindsey is a deluded basket case.

by Anonymousreply 255December 30, 2020 8:50 PM

[R231] A good deal of the catalogue Stevie Nicks just sold for $100 million is worth as much as it is due to Lindsey, who never shared credit with Nicks when he could have. But DL likes the narrative that he's a monster. Apparently a generous monster.

[quote]The only person in Fleetwood Mac who has a problem with Lindsey Buckingham is, not surprisingly, Stevie Nicks, who in contrast to Lindsey is a deluded basket case.

Completely untrue. The rest of the band has despised him since he joined the band and began telling them how to play their parts. John McVie said he wasn't in the band to be treated like a session player by the new guy.

They witnessed his meltdowns, which included physical attacks, and not just on Stevie. In one of them, he began strangling their producer Ken Caillat. This is probably why they were famously unconcerned when Lindsey had a seizure and collapsed backstage. Lindsey's girlfriend at that time - who, like at least two others besides Nicks, had also been attacked by Lindsey - was still stunned that none of the rest of the band seemed to care what had happened to Lindsey. They were fed up with him, that's why.

They recognized that Buckingham's obsessive work in the studio paid off when they were making records, but that didn't make them like him. They tolerated him and made nice with him for the benefit of having him produce their work. Now that they're no longer making records, they don't have to put up with his shit anymore. And reports are the last tour, without Lindsey, was much less stressful and more enjoyable for the group.

And don't forget: Lindsey quit the band previously, AND tried to block Christine's return to the band, because he didn't want the tour profits changing from a four-way split back to a five-way split. He got outvoted on that one. But why defend a guy who tried to keep one of the iconic members from returning?

by Anonymousreply 261January 1, 2021 4:50 PM

Lars Ullrich from Metallica is an egomaniacal asshole of epic proportions. I've seen interviews where he trashes other musicians. My brother is a talented drummer. He's met many famous rock stars and always talks to the drummers in the bands if he gets a chance. Most of them he's talked to single out Lars Ullrich as the biggest douchebag in the business. He's really just a spoiled suburbanite kid who developed a massive ego. He's condescending to everyone. I'm surprised no one has mentioned him.

by Anonymousreply 262January 1, 2021 8:03 PM

So R261 how come Lindsey and Christine made an album together if they hate each other?

by Anonymousreply 263January 2, 2021 11:18 AM

I think Phil Lynott was doing every drug he could get his hands on. Cocaine, heroin, booze, you name it. He got hepatitis from dirty needles during the height of the band's success.

His mother refused to marry his father, a guy from Guyana, she had 2 other kids from 2 other guys but gave them up for adoption.

Lynott was a bit of a contradiction, very softspoken sensitive guy who wrote poetry books and all the lyrics and music for Thin Lizzy's greatest hits. But on stage he was this super sexy animal who could get all the girls into his dressing room after the show. Great Live band, they were better on stage than in the studio. I wonder how they would have progressed if Lynott had lived.

I always thought he was a fascinating guy.

by Anonymousreply 264January 2, 2021 12:23 PM

R261 John punched the director of the Hold Me video and was constantly drunk. He also threw an axe at Christine. Christine enjoys dressing in blackface. Stevie was a mean spirited cokehead who had a taste for homewreking and she has a history of racist behavior. She is also the one who threw punches first in 1987. Mick lived on a daily diet of cocaine for 20 years and doesn't like to pay fair wages. Your singular obsession with trying to prove that Lindsey Buckingham is the only fucked up in Fleetwood Mac is stupid. It's always the dumb fraus trying to paint Stevie Nicks as some kind of saint.

by Anonymousreply 265January 2, 2021 6:25 PM

R261 Lindsey was the one who wanted Christine back. He chased her car down after The Dance and tried to beg her not to leave. Mick and Stevie were the ones who tried to replace Christine with Sheryl Crowe in the 2000s. Mick finally convinced Christine, who has a fear of flying, to come back in 2013-2014. Stevie pretended to be happy with Christine's return ( which she had no part in) and then acted indignant when Christine was ready to go in the studio Stevie lies A LOT in order to peddle her agenda. I don't know where you're getting your information, but you seem to not be well informed.

Yeah, sure the screeching white boy is "full of emotion" but a black woman with a wide vocal range, even if she wasted it on subpar material, is "vocal gymnastics." That's not just racist, that's homophobic since she was probably a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 281January 5, 2021 5:41 PM

R281 what the fuck are you talking about?

by Anonymousreply 282January 6, 2021 3:33 AM

John Lennon bitched on about not being "discovered" when he was a kid, he felt that his talent was so remarkable that he should have been given as many opportunities early on. Imagine being that delusional.

by Anonymousreply 283January 6, 2021 4:46 AM

Um r283, he happened to be right.

The man was a musical genius.

by Anonymousreply 284January 6, 2021 6:17 AM

R285 How does that makes him a jerk?

by Anonymousreply 287January 6, 2021 3:15 PM

It makes him a slob, not a jerk.

by Anonymousreply 288January 6, 2021 3:17 PM

R262. I've heard through the grapevine(certain touring musicians, but not Brett Tuggle) that Christine is done with Fleetwood Mac. She was not happy with the Lindsey firing. So there goes your little bullshit fantasy story about everyone hating Lindsey.

by Anonymousreply 289January 6, 2021 11:02 PM

I’ve discovered I am completely enmeshed in Dunning/Kruger effect.

by Anonymousreply 290January 6, 2021 11:21 PM

R261 That bullshit about no one caring about Lindsey's epilepsy is fabricated nonsense. If you haven't noticed, Carol Ann has a big chip on her shoulder regarding Stevie and how "actually I was the one who really cared about Lindsey, not Stevie". There is audio and video evidence that proves otherwise. Also I'm surprised you take everything Carole Ann says at face value when she doesn't paint Stevie in a good light in her book either. She was clearly very jealous of Stevie.

Rock 'n' roll was invented so whites could listen to "Black music" without actually listening to Black musicians.

by Anonymousreply 292January 8, 2021 2:05 PM

R292, I agree up to a point. Elvis and The British invasion was definitely that. White Americans needed to rockabilly from Elvis and blues from British people. But Chuck Berry was the first person inducted in the RRHoF and Jimmy Hendrix in considered the best rock guitarist by a huge margin.

by Anonymousreply 293January 8, 2021 5:24 PM

It’s obvious that the rest of the Talking Heads were instrumental in their success and not just Byrne. Tom Tom Club were able to score a couple of massive hits, Byrne never did solo.

by Anonymousreply 298January 9, 2021 11:36 PM

R298. Talking Heads, Smashing Pumpkins, and Fleetwood Mac all suffered from the same problem: egocentric credit hogging front (wo)men.

by Anonymousreply 299January 10, 2021 12:46 AM

R299 that's LSD--Lead Singer Disease. A common and notorious affliction.

by Anonymousreply 300January 10, 2021 12:55 AM

R300 There's a joke in the music business about lead singers:

What does the lead singer's girlfriend do with her pussy three days a week?

She drops him off at band practice.

by Anonymousreply 307January 10, 2021 5:31 AM

R299, how many front persons (or lead singers) can you name, who aren't credit hogging and egocentric? Credit grasping and egocmania are normal for the big-time popular music industry!

Although, of course, some take it to a level that makes them stand out from their peers, like Byrne.

by Anonymousreply 308January 10, 2021 5:53 AM

R308 Michael Stipe is notoriously humble (at least when it comes to his band mates). Although Bono is a dickhead he doesn't pretend that he is the band. Like U2 and REM, Muse and Coldplay share the credit around. There are plenty of humble front men, you just don't hear about them as much. Billy Corgan has got to be the absolute worst though.

by Anonymousreply 309January 10, 2021 5:19 PM

Billy Corgan can't sing either.

by Anonymousreply 312January 12, 2021 8:27 PM

[R289] Christine wasn't consulted before they fired Lindsey, which must have seemed like quite a slap in the face to her. In days past all 5 members supposedly had an equal share in the band, which included decision-making powers. If you forfeited your vote by not participating that was one thing, but this was Stevie forcing her hand and bullying Mick into going along with her, or else. The McVies weren't a part of the firing. Not exactly in the spirt of a collaboration. Unfortunately, Mick lives his life like a geriatric teenager with persistent money problems and wasn't in a position to exercise integrity. They should have just called off the tour and avoided the embarrassing travesty that followed. Stevie Nicks permanently damaged the band, its reputation and its legacy.

by Anonymousreply 313January 12, 2021 10:59 PM

[R289] Maybe Christine's position has something to do with Mick recently re-connecting with Lindsey. Mick can do without one of his star singer/songwriters on tour but not two of them, including Stevie Nicks.

Freddie Mercury was a nice guy according to his last partner. When he was diagnosed with AIDS he offered him a way out and asked what he could do for him but his partner didn't leave. He also left 25% of his fortune to his parents and 25% to his sister, none of who saw him in the last 2 years of his life. Apparently, several men in his home had AIDS and he left them half a million pounds so they would have somewhere to die in peace. Elton John and his bandmates and their wives said he was sweet, shy and modest off stage. His only girlfriend described him as a thoroughly decent human being who was open and honest with her.

by Anonymousreply 317January 19, 2021 11:06 AM

Does anyone have any good gossip about Jim Morrison?

by Anonymousreply 318January 20, 2021 9:40 PM

"Does anyone have any good gossip about Jim Morrison?"

Here are some facts about him:

His father was a a United States Navy rear admiral and naval aviator I can only imagine how appalled he was at his son's antics.

For a time he did LSD a lot, and ate it "like candy."

He wasn't into drugs as much as alcohol. He was a notorious, loutish drunk and would perform while blotto.

Since he was such a hard core drunk I doubt he was much as a lover, but it was said that he really liked sodomizing women. He was also physically abusive to them, knocking them around, treating them like shit.

He preferred redheads. Pamela Courson, a very cute redhead, was his closest companion and has been called his common law wife. She was as reckless as he was; he liked to say to girls he was with things like "let's drive off this cliff" and in Pamela he found someone who actually WOULD. She was a heavy drug user, doing stuff like thorazine and heroin. They were together in Paris when he died; supposedly he got into her heroin stash and that's how he died. of a heroin overdose. She died a few years after he did; she was 27, the same age he was when he died.

He was very intelligent but it didn't matter since he was such a jerk. He'd pee on carpets and in people's drinks. He had a kind of anger fit onstage and supposedly exposed his dick to the audience. It's unclear what happened but he was arrested and convicted of indecent exposure and sentenced to a jail term. He was out on bond while the conviction was appealed and died a few months later.

He seemed to suffer from clinical depression and seemed to know he'd die young. After Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin died he told some friends "You're drinking with Number 3."

by Anonymousreply 319January 21, 2021 4:03 AM

Ronstadt dissed him big time in her memoir. Something along the lines of, the first time she saw The Doors in the Sixties, she thought to herself, this'd be a decent band if they got rid of their lead singer.

by Anonymousreply 320January 21, 2021 4:13 AM

R320 Morrison was one of those musicians who's talent became vastly overrated by the public following their death. Ray Manzarek and Robby Kreiger were the real talents in The Doors, but they couldn't go on without their charismatic front man.

by Anonymousreply 321January 21, 2021 4:30 AM

Morrison only owned on pair of trousers - a pair of tight black leather pants, which he wore all the time. I read this in his biography "No One Here Gets Out Alive". According to the author, by the time of his death, they were stiff with filth.

R323 Berlin is one of my favorite albums. Listened to it just yesterday. Side B is the most depressing piece of music ever recorded. It's a conceptual album about two people. Just because the guy is an asshole and a chauvinist, doesn't mean Lou was. It's not from his perspective.

by Anonymousreply 325January 21, 2021 1:13 PM

Um. r325 Lou Reed is one of the most notorious rock and roll jerks of all time. Berlin is but one example of many.

by Anonymousreply 326January 21, 2021 1:14 PM

Whenever Lou Reed pops up on the DL, there are always posts that fiercely defend him.

Makes me wonder ... did Laurie Anderson find DataLounge??

by Anonymousreply 327January 21, 2021 1:37 PM

R326 He might have been. Doesn't change the fact that Berlin is a phenomenal album.

by Anonymousreply 328January 21, 2021 2:39 PM

He was physically abusive and an asshole who mistreated nearly everyone in his personal orbit.

No "might have been" about it.

In my experience, there are few people whose assholery can be excused on account of their genius. Lou Reed is nowhere near that league.

by Anonymousreply 329January 21, 2021 2:47 PM

Ok. He was physically abusive and an asshole who mistreated nearly everyone in his personal orbit. Berlin is a phenomenal record. Better now?

by Anonymousreply 330January 21, 2021 2:49 PM

I honestly don't get the defensiveness of Lou Reed supporters. He had decent albums with a few decent songs (New York is my favorite). But his ego FAR exceeded his talent.

Simon and Garfunkel were way before my time (though I love their music). I’ve heard from a friend who works in the industry in LA that Paul Simon was/ is an asshole, with plenty of stories about him being an asshole to more than confirm his reputation. Apparently if you’re not deemed important enough he wouldn’t even acknowledge you even after you greet him, he’d just look past you like you’re not even there. This is on top of his reputation for huge ego and for stealing from other musical collaborators by grafting their original works onto his, something that is well-known in the music industry. Even his work as part of S&G, he downplayed Garfunkel’s role in arranging and producing many of the songs. Many of those who’d interacted with both invariably say that Simon was the less well-adjusted of the two, more than a touch of Napoleon syndrome.

by Anonymousreply 342January 22, 2021 9:58 PM

I knew Paul Simon in the 80's and he was a total jerk, as was his horrible eldest son.

by Anonymousreply 343January 22, 2021 10:02 PM

R342 Garfunkel also has a much better voice.

by Anonymousreply 344January 25, 2021 2:56 AM

John Lennon is reputed to have been a flaming prick. Supposedly, he was partying at a club in LA during the ‘70s and, at some point, stuck a Kotex pad to his forehead, where it remained for the rest of the evening. Apparently feeling that the cocktail waitress was being dismissive of his greatness, he asked, “Don’t you know who I am?”, and she responded, “Yeah, you’re some asshole with a Kotex stuck to his face.”

by Anonymousreply 345January 25, 2021 3:10 AM

R345 was it extra absorbent? Perhaps he was having a heavy-flow day.

by Anonymousreply 346January 25, 2021 3:35 AM

"John Lennon is reputed to have been a flaming prick. "

"Reputed to be?" He WAS. When he was killed, I grieved his death. But considering what a dick he was I feel silly for doing it. His death proved the final end to the Beatles; that was the only reason to feel bad about his demise. He and Yoko Ono were quite a pair of creeps. Both were truly awful human beings. I hear Yoko is not doing well. I suppose she'll leave her vast fortune (which was really John's fortune) to Sean Lennon and her daughter Kyoko. Julian Lennon will likely get stiffed AGAIN. John left everything to Yoko; after his death Julian had to settle for whatever crumbs Yoko was willing to dole out to him.

by Anonymousreply 353January 26, 2021 1:08 AM

Despite the fact that he was with underage hookers who overdosed at his house, Henley saw himself as the victim in all of it which was partially the inspiration for "Dirty Laundry". Also the press coverage of the deaths of John Belushi and Natalie Wood.

That being said, I still love the song.

by Anonymousreply 354January 26, 2021 2:47 AM

Rod Morgenstern (drummer from Winger) is a kind, humble person from a lovely family.

Seymour Stein (Madonna’s manager) enjoyed antique shopping and often frequented Brimfield. He was thoughtful enough to remember to bring a signed autograph he had promised my father the year before for me in the mid-eighties. (I was not a fan and reacted in an ungrateful teenage manner.)

by Anonymousreply 378February 25, 2021 6:55 AM

The Rolling Stones...where do I begin?

Brian Jones was a disintegrating mess from early on, who viciously beat all his girlfriends.

Bill Wyman began dating Mandy Smith when she was 13, whom he married when she turned 18. Her mother ended up marrying Bill's son.

As noted in the other thread on evil celebs, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger stole writing credits from MANY, including their guitarist Mick Taylor, who left for that reason. While the Stones got richer and richer off Mick's work, Mick Taylor was so impoverished he couldn't afford to see a dentist.

Keith abandoned his best friend and drug partner of many years with a raging heroin habit he had no money to support. Keith and Ronnie Wood asked the devoted young publisher of their fanzine to receive drugs for them in Japan, where I think you get life imprisonment if caught.

As mentioned, three of Mick's long term r'ships attempted suicide, one of whom, L'Wren Scott, succeeded. I was surprised to read that L'Wren was considered difficult, because she was much liked. He is said to have slept with 8000 women. He carried on an 8 year affair with Carla Bruni which included jetting off to Thailand after his defacto wife had just given birth. The mother of his first child had to take him to court to get child support.

R379 Mick Taylor was the best thing to ever happen to the Stones.

by Anonymousreply 392February 25, 2021 11:17 PM

Keith Richards is sometimes blamed for the demise of his bosom buddy Gram Parsons. I don't think he can rightly be blamed for Parson's death (he OD'd naturally, on morphine and alcohol) but it probably didn't do Parsons, who was really fucked up, any good to have a close friend who could provide for him an unlimited supply of cocaine and heroin. Parsons was thrilled to be in close proximity with the Roling Stones. He and his blonde teenage girlfriend (later his wife) lived with Richards and Anita Pallenberg at Nellcote, a French villa where the Stones were staying while they recorded "Exile on Main Street." Gram Parsons taught Keith Richards everything he knew about country music; his influence can be heard in songs like "Sweet Virginia" and later, "Dead Flowers." After a time he and his girlfriend were asked to leave; Parsons was so fucked up on drugs they thought he might die on the premises. He did die, at Joshua Tree Inn, when he was 26.

The relationship between Richards and Parsons was really bizarre. Mick Jagger was jealous of it. They became so enthralled with each other that it was scary. People who saw them said it was like they were TURNING INTO each other. Richards started wearing Western belt buckles and Nudie outfits; Parsons began wearing silk scarves and mascara. The groupie Miss Mercy said "Gram was just like Keith and Keith was just like Gram. The switched accents and they switched clothes. Gram was running around stage with his wrist flapping and acting so odd that people would roll their eyes up in their head. We were like "Oh God, this is frightening what's happening to this poor guy."

Parsons and Richards were 'inseparable" for a while and boy, it was weird. Did they ever fuck each other? Who knows? They were both hard core druggies and when you get that high you'll fuck anything. At any rate, Parson's relationship with Richards didn't do anything for him, except to make him get even more drug dependent than he already was. Richards, on the other hand, got some good songs out of his association with Parsons. And he survived. So I guess Richards came out the winner.

by Anonymousreply 393February 26, 2021 5:15 AM

Gram Parsons was a mess. He would have died from drugs and alcohol regardless. Richards maybe expedited the process a bit.

I was once on a plane with low Reed. he was flying coach. He did nothing but complain the entire 5 hour trip. When I got home I threw out his albums.

by Anonymousreply 395March 1, 2021 9:32 PM

R395, Where were you flying to?

by Anonymousreply 396March 1, 2021 11:14 PM

Seriously, what's this about Eddie Van Halen being a jerk?

by Anonymousreply 397March 7, 2021 10:16 AM

Don Henley might be the worst one. Look up what he did in 1980. It wasn't the first incident either. Then he had the audacity to write an album complaining about it.

Nico was a Nazi and she stabbed a black woman in the eye socket with a broken wine glass.

[quote]Still, there's no doubt talk of her dark side is accurate. When Danny Fields describes her as "Nazi-esque", he's not affectionately referring to her regal, demanding personality, but to her racism. "Every once in a while there'd be something about Jews and I'd be, 'But Nico, I'm Jewish,' and she was like 'Yes, yes, I don't mean you.' She had a definite Nordic Aryan streak, [the belief] that she was physically, spiritually and creatively superior." Worse, on one occasion, she acted those beliefs out, explosively. In the restaurant at the Chelsea Hotel sometime in the very early 1970s, Nico sat with a bunch of musicians, among them a beautiful mixed-race singer who'd worked with Jimi Hendrix. According to Fields, "Nico was, I dunno, feeling neglected, or drunk, but suddenly she said 'I hate black people,' and smashed a wineglass on the table and stuck it in the girl's eye. There was lots of blood and screaming. Fortunately she just twisted it around her eye socket, so the glass never reached [the eye] but it's not like she was being cautious." Fields claims the Warhol crowd spirited Nico on to a plane and out of the country the next morning, while somehow managing to placate the victim and hush up the affair.

During quarantine I started browsing the Steve Hoffman forums every so often and let me tell you, straight men prove they are bitchier than DLers when someone dislikes The Beatles. Anyway, I always get a kick out of reading how David Crosby and Graham Nash *still* hate each other. Roger McGuinn also makes bitchy digs at David Crosby now and then, too.

by Anonymousreply 403April 7, 2021 2:51 AM

R403 A woman I know is a superfan of The Kinks. She told me that many times when she tells straight guys they're her favorite band, they will immediately tell her how The Beatles are the superior British invasion band.

by Anonymousreply 404April 7, 2021 7:56 PM

R403. Those old, straight, white boomers absolutely foam at the mouth over the fact that that zoomers like "Here Comes the Sun" more than "Hey Jude". There are multiple threads about it.

by Anonymousreply 405April 7, 2021 8:40 PM

Born ‘93, British, and I have always thought the Beatles fucking suck.

Living through the hipster fad for them in the mid-late 2000s was fresh hell. I’m so glad they’re over now, and that everyone is seeing through the smoke and mirrors.

by Anonymousreply 406April 7, 2021 8:52 PM

The ostensibly straight guys at the Steve Hoffman forums would absolutely sink to their knees and open their mouths to receive Sir Paul McCartney's dick within a nanosecond of being asked to.

by Anonymousreply 407April 7, 2021 8:54 PM

R406 Like The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac needs to go away again. We went from '60s boomer nostalgia with The Beatles in the 2000s and then '70s boomer nostalgia with Fleetwood Mac in the 2010s. Nostalgia just needs to die. No one seems to have new ideas.

by Anonymousreply 408April 7, 2021 9:06 PM

I apologize if this was already mentioned, as my phone keeps freezing as I scroll through the thread, but Kurt Cobain claimed that Eddie Van Halen called Pat Smear a, “n*gger”. I think that the actual quote was something along the lines of, “Let me play the nigger’s guitar, or Mexican. Whatever he is.”.......charming.

by Anonymousreply 409April 7, 2021 9:55 PM

R406 they’re over now? The fuck are you talking about? They are still the most popular band in the world and probably always will be

by Anonymousreply 410April 7, 2021 10:05 PM

R409 I don't give a fuck about EVH but I wouldn't believe anything Charles R Cross says. He's Courtney's lap dog. He painted her as a saint in Cobain's biography. Never once mentioned his well documented plan to divorce her before he died.

by Anonymousreply 411April 7, 2021 10:07 PM

R406 Hey Everybody, look how edgy I am!

by Anonymousreply 412April 8, 2021 12:46 AM

R405 Oh, seriously. It's a bitchier forum than DL and Lipstick Alley combined. I thought you were joking, but there really IS a SIXTY-PAGE thread whining about "Here Comes the Sun" being the most streamed song by the Beatles over "Hey Jude." I'm settling in for a read, thank you!

R409 The mention of Pat Smear reminds me, does anyone remember the Foo Fighters supporting some insane charity that was "critical" of HIV/AIDs?? No one ever mentions it, but I still remember.

[quote]The multimillion-album-selling alternative rock outfit has thrown its weight behind Alive and Well, an “alternative AIDS information group” that denies any link between HIV and AIDS. In January, Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel helped organize a sold-out concert in Hollywood to benefit the group. Foo fans were treated to a speech by Alive and Well founder Christine Maggiore, who believes AIDS may be caused by HIV-related medications, anal sex, stress, and drug use, and implies that people should not get tested for HIV nor take medications to counter the virus. Free copies of Maggiore’s self-published book, “What If Everything You Thought You Knew About AIDS Was Wrong?,” in which she declares “there is no proof that HIV causes AIDS,” were also passed out to the concert-goers.

I agree r406 the Beatles are overrated. They’re like the Boomers version of Sun 41. Sure they wrote their own songs...their own shitty song. A boy band who can play a few chords. And John Lennon was a piece of shit. I’m glad he’s dead.

R417 hardly. Now if you want to talk obscure visual-kei or Chinese neoclassical fusion jazz, then hme...

Funny how some people struggle and strive to paint anyone with developed, wide, and controversial tastes as a clueles elitist desperate to look cool. Some people just don’t want to be spoonfed bland shitty radio pop; it’s not a crime.

R49 It's all in Mick Fleetwood's autobiography and Storms the autobio of Carol Ann Harris.

Lindsey's a fucking violent douche - he almost strangled Carol Ann to death in front of Mick's then wife who was part of the inspiration for Sarah.

I'm not the person who posted above, just defending them because I've read both books.

Not a Stevie stan, she's probably a handful, but Lindsey's abuse is part of public record.

by Anonymousreply 424April 9, 2021 10:52 AM

R424 Lindsey, Stevie, and John all threw punches, threw shit, and and we're total cunts, but for some reason only Lindsey's shit is pathologized. John chased Christine around with an axe, Stevie threw a chair at Christine, started multiple fights with Lindsey. Even their tour manager strangled Richard Dashut. Of course Mick to some degree protects John and Stevie, first because John and him go way back and second because Stevie is the money maker. I believe that Lindsey was a cunt to Carol Ann but she's not the angel she portals herself in the book. Sara Rancor has said that she once beat the crap out of Dennis Wilson in Hawaii. It seems that violence was pretty fucking common in that group and it's hypocritical to single out one person.

Also if we're going to believe everything a bitter ex says about a rock star the why the fuck does no one take Heather Mills seriously but takes Carole Ann at her word?

by Anonymousreply 432April 16, 2021 2:26 AM

R431, you sound like the idiot at R420. Whatever can be said about the Beatles they were not "overrated' and not "shitty." Anyone who says so is just plain witless.

by Anonymousreply 433April 16, 2021 2:29 AM

I hate the Beatles because they have been overplayed and overrated. I am not witless.

"I hate the Beatles because they have been overplayed and overrated. I am not witless."

Well, I guess you just wouldn't know good music if it bit you on the ass, then. The Beatles made lots of it. That's one reason their music gets played a lot; people like it, because it's GOOD. They are not '"overrated." You just don't know anything about good music.

by Anonymousreply 435April 16, 2021 3:11 AM

The Beatles being overrated would be a valid argument if you can list songs by people you deem not overrated and let's see if they made historical recordings like Strawberry Fields, Tomorrow Never Know, A Day In the Life, I Am The Walrus, Hey Jude, all of the White Album, all of Abbey Road. Start listing! You can do it.......

[quote] Jack White/Josh Homme/Axl Rose/Billy Corgan - general physical violence.

Most of these rockers with violent or perverted tendencies are fucking gross assholes, and ought to be removed from society. Rarely am I in favour of cancellations or dragging famous performers & artists through the mud or putting them in stocks, but some of these creeps are barely human anyway.

But I have to confess that the sexual hypocrisy really jumps out of me when it comes to Homme. I'm barely interested in men/90%+ woman-leaning bi, and I especially revile violent or aggressive guys--whether physically/sexually or verbally, active or passive, doesn't matter, I just hate it (probably because my dad was a pass-agg yeller and smasher-of-plates). But Josh is 100% my type of male and is just that sexy and has so much sensual swagger, that to be honest, I'd maybe consider overlooking his violent history for one brief encounter. Or at least, mentally blocking it out temporarily. Though this is on the condition that during our time together he didn't choke or punch or attack or shout at me, or do so to another woman or a gay man (I don't give a shit if he wails on another straight guy---hetero males need to police and control their own violence themselves, and leave us out of it).

R99 Oh for christs sake, Lennon is drunk and busts the guy's balls, so the guy runs away in tears and never plays music again? I think there must have been something else going on with the guy.

Still making my way through the thread, but has David Crosby been mentioned? Many stories about him, though he is highly entertaining on Twitter these days.

by Anonymousreply 441June 13, 2022 2:26 PM

As an elder, I'd guess it's easy for younger people to dismiss the Beatles as overrated, because of everything that followed them, that they influenced. I was just a kid but I remember how totally new and electric and thrilling their sound was, there was simply nothing like it. You really have to work at imagining that if you weren't around.

by Anonymousreply 442June 13, 2022 2:29 PM

....and experimental. The Beatles were so fucking experimental. Every album that came out, it was like, what are they up to now? Totally new stuff that no one had ever heard before, different styles, sound effects, long-form songs, crazy shit. And all in the space of a few years.

by Anonymousreply 443June 13, 2022 2:36 PM

R297 Tracii Guns is really cute, friendly, and quite articulate for a dopey stoner 80s rocker. A really nice guy, too, I see why he didn't stick around Axl & Slash.

He also held on to youthful looks for a really long time. He's only grown a beard/greys and starting sporting wrinkles recently, inside the last ten years, which is pretty good going for someone from a Sunset Strip club band background who smokes and doesn't always use sunscreen and was born in 1966.
