The sarcastic substitute school teacher made the move to Miami after she divorced her philandering husband of thirty-eight years, Stanley. Despite dealing with her own heartbreak, Dorothy is always a source of wisdom, comfort and calm for the other women. At almost six-feet tall, she really is their pillar of strength.
Dorothy and Stan already lived in Miami before they divorced. And Stan is the one who divorced her.

Why don’t you just wear a sign that says “too ugly to live”?

She got knocked up at 17 but the baby (Michael) was born a decade later. The longest pregnancy on record.

They made her out to be so freakishly talk but she was only 5’9” - for that generation however, I guess that was unusually tall. Now every woman wants to be that height.
They did the same with Three’s Company - there were so many “tall & clumsy” jokes about Cindy you’d think she was a giant, but Jenillee Harrison is only 5’8”.
People in showbiz are short.

R4 Wonder what people thought of Mary Stuart’s height.

The show would still be on if Bea hadn't decided to quit.

R9, starring Betty and three corpses?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 19, 2020 10:10 PM |
Her homely, MANNISH appearance was the source of endless yet well-deserved ridicule by her aesthetic betters.

Dorothy Zbornak fan here. She is the epitome of strength and wisdom to me.

She looks even more gigantic on "Maude". I am amazed that she was only 5'9".

R3, Dorothy also had a daughter, Kate. She seems to have been older than Michael.

I wonder if Bea ever felt like shit when sometimes the story line made her the butt of jokes for being ugly, overbearing and manly?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 20, 2020 7:52 PM |
R22, She did. Bea threatened to quit several times because of all the "Dorothy bashing" jokes.

The show's location was Miami, yet she always wore those filthy white boots. In several episodes her big feet were encased in sandals, but those boots were never out of sight in that supposed heat and humidity.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 3, 2021 10:58 PM |
I thought Dorothy was quite fashionable
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 3, 2021 11:34 PM |
I loved how they dressed, especially when they got all glammed up in their evening wear.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 3, 2021 11:58 PM |
That peach chiffon dress really did look much better on Dot than on Blanche. It should win the Nobel Prize for miracles.

r3...She was knocked up and 19...just 20 min ago an episode aired where Sophia made that exact comment. Its the episode where Rose convinces Dorothy to attend a positive thinking group.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 24, 2021 10:09 PM |
she dresses like an English lawyer
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 24, 2021 10:12 PM |
Dorothy was kaftan queen. When they went out for fancy dinners she would usually sport some kind of sparkly kaftan all covered in sequins. They were like strange kaftan pantsuit hybrids.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 24, 2021 10:16 PM |
I liked her green and purple satin pajama/pantsuit combo. Kind of an 80's Endora look.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 24, 2021 10:36 PM |
R39 that is her most hideous look!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 24, 2021 10:57 PM |
It worked for the times! She wore it a lot too, so the costume poeple liked it.
And trust me there were many looks quote more hideous! haha
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 24, 2021 11:00 PM |
R41 the only one I can think of that was even worse was that tuxedo she wore a couple times that was in almost the same color green/teal.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 25, 2021 12:11 AM |
I felt safer with her in the house.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 14, 2021 12:06 AM |
I’m sure she was taller than 5’9”. For a Hollywood woman back then, you would add 3 inches to her height in the same way that you would subtract 3 inches from a Hollywood man’s height.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 14, 2021 12:10 AM |
Dorothy with a Z!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 14, 2021 12:20 AM |
I saw her in her one-woman show, she was definitely taller than 5'9"
and she had large bare feet...
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 14, 2021 12:30 AM |
Had one of the most beautiful wedding gowns ever
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 14, 2021 12:34 AM |
R44 highly doubt it - the concept of what was tall for a woman was radically different then - and it wasn’t the ideal the way it is today. Betty and Rue were also super short (like 5’2”).
A lot of actors that was considered “weirdly tall” at the time weren’t all that at all. Jenilee Harrison is another - so many jokes were made about her height but she was just 5’8” surrounded by short actors.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 14, 2021 2:24 AM |
The show's locale was Miami, but there was Dorothy in so many episodes wearing those ugly white boots. Few episodes saw her big feet encased in sandals, but those boots in Miami. Her wedding gown was a disaster.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 14, 2021 2:36 AM |
I’m a Dorothy Z fan!
