Man dead from COVID complications, after having medical emergency on United flight

A United flight was diverted after a passenger suffered a medical emergency and died.

United Flight 591 was diverted to New Orleans on Monday after a male passenger became ill. Paramedics transported the individual to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, the carrier said.

According to airline officials, the passenger's wife told an emergency medical technician that her husband had COVID-related symptoms. Officials have not confirmed if the passenger was positive for the virus.

Cameron Roberts was a passenger on the flight. He described a chaotic scene in which fellow passengers rushed to help the man in distress.

“They had him on the ground in the center of the aisle,” Roberts said. “They were still giving him CPR while we were touching down.”

Roberts and his fiancé said passengers gave the man chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth believing he was suffering from cardiac arrest.

Roberts said is currently quarantining and took a COVID test.

“It's sad to see that, you know, they lost a family member,” Roberts said, “but at the same time, it was irresponsible on their part to have came on the plane.”

United said it has been in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is “sharing requested information with the agency so they can work with local health officials to conduct outreach to any customer the CDC believes may be at risk for possible exposure or infection.”

United requires all its passengers to complete a "Ready-to-Fly" checklist before checking into a flight, which prompts them to acknowledge they have not tested positive for COVID-19 nor have they had any related symptoms in the past two weeks.

"We implore passengers not to travel if they have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or have COVID-related symptoms. If in doubt, the best option is to get tested," United said.

Remaining passengers on the flight were able to continue on with their travel plans or take a later flight.

"The health and safety of our employees and customers is our highest priority, which is why we have various policies and procedures in place such as mask mandates and requiring customers to complete a 'Ready-to-Fly' checklist before the flight," United said in a statement.

And he had COVID????

And the wife didn't say anything to these people???!!!

I would fucking SUE her!

Why are people like this, so fucking dumb?

Instead of staying home and/or going to a hospital because you have COVID, they decide to fly. On an airplane. With hundreds of other passengers. Spreading COVID.

I mean, what can you say about this kind of stupidity?

by Anonymousreply 2December 19, 2020 1:49 AM

It the troll OP saying he had covid and died from it, not the linked article. His wife just said he had covid like symptoms.

by Anonymousreply 3December 19, 2020 1:50 AM

R1 I'm not sure if I could give someone mouth-to-mouth without using one of those one way barriers. I hope the airline's first aid kit had one of those!!

Well evidently, them 'policies' just ain't enough, United.

R3 is right

[quote]According to airline officials, the passenger's wife told an emergency medical technician that her husband had COVID-related symptoms. Officials have not confirmed if the passenger was positive for the virus.

You cannot on one hand, take medical advice from qualifed medical professionals like Fauchi, and then turn around and say, "THE WIFE KNEW HE HAD COVID!!".

Maybe he did, but she is not qualified to diagnose it.

This is the definition of click bait. I know people don't like to think about it but people die on planes every week.

He was well enough to go through the security process, board a plane, and then Covid killed him right then and there? Most likely he just had a heart attack (which can include shortness of breath, headaches, etc.).

Not saying he didn't have it, but posting

by Anonymousreply 7December 19, 2020 1:59 AM

True, R7.

Because you know what he had and what he died from.

And since you're all-knowing and omnipotent, I'm sure you also know whether or not those people were exposed to COVID.

I wish we could all be like you. So knowledgeable. So wise. You're everything.

by Anonymousreply 8December 19, 2020 2:02 AM

Do YOU R8?

He could have easily as died from a meth overdose from the vauge, 3rd hand description, but this doesn't stop people from posting how he was Hitler for flying with Covid.

like hell you will, you think we'll let you little people take on our friends

by Anonymousreply 10December 19, 2020 2:05 AM

So Cameron was gay I’m guessing.

At least according to the article, he was engaged to a man.

by Anonymousreply 11December 19, 2020 2:13 AM

Haha R11.

You could be right. Or the writer could be wrong.

[quote] Cameron Roberts was a passenger on the flight. He described a chaotic scene in which fellow passengers rushed to help the man in distress.

[quote] Roberts and his fiancé said...

If Cameron is engaged to a woman, it should have been spelled "fiancee," right?

But since the author spelled it "fiance," it implies that he's engaged to a man.

Good catch.

by Anonymousreply 12December 19, 2020 2:20 AM

The catastrophe queens will love this and use it as an excuse not to fly for the next three years

by Anonymousreply 13December 19, 2020 2:22 AM

United would not be providing contact tracing information and contacting the CDC if he didn't have Covid.

[quote]United requires all its passengers to complete a "Ready-to-Fly" checklist before checking into a flight, which prompts them to acknowledge they have not tested positive for COVID-19 nor have they had any related symptoms in the past two weeks.

So, basically, they just want you to pinky swear that you're not a fucking lying arrogant piece of shit willing to endanger hundreds of other people just to do what you want. Good plan.

by Anonymousreply 14December 19, 2020 2:42 AM

[quote]But since the author spelled it "fiance," it implies that he's engaged to a man.

or, alternatively, the author could be ignorant

by Anonymousreply 15December 19, 2020 3:56 AM

[quote] United would not be providing contact tracing information and contacting the CDC if he didn't have Covid.

Not necessarily true. If they suspected he had COVID, better to be safe than sorry while you still have the manifest handy.

by Anonymousreply 16December 19, 2020 3:54 PM

Why in the hell is ANYONE traveling right now, except for essential people like doctors, health care workers, and government officials?

by Anonymousreply 17December 19, 2020 8:12 PM

Because they are self-centered, selfish, Immature, ignorant pieces of shit, R17. That's why they are traveling.

by Anonymousreply 18December 19, 2020 8:16 PM

The dead man's estate should be sued by everyone on the plane, including the airline, because they knowingly lied on the required checklist and stated they had been free of Covid symptoms for 2 weeks...which she told the EMTs wasn't true.

by Anonymousreply 19December 19, 2020 8:18 PM

How bizarre that freaks like R3/R7 are defending these flying Covidiots, who put everyone's health at risk on that plane.

And the wife let these people perform CPR on this guy, knowing that he could possibly have COVID.

If that isn't a lawsuit waiting to happen, then I don't know what is.

[quote] A medic gave CPR to a person with COVID-19 on a flight. He had symptoms of the virus for days, but says he has no regrets.

A medic who performed CPR on a man who had COVID-19 on a United Airlines flight last week says that he has no regrets.

Tony Aldapa, a licensed EMT and a Veteran's Hospital emergency room healthcare worker based in Los Angeles, told Insider that he didn't know the man he helped had COVID-19 at the time, but had no hesitation in jumping in to help.

"It didn't really matter," he told Insider. "I was already following protocols, quarantining and getting tested anyway."

Aldapa had given CPR to 62-year-old Isaias Hernandez, who had a medical emergency on a flight from Orlando to Los Angeles on December 14.

The emergency caused the flight to be rerouted to New Orleans, where Hernandez was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. It was later confirmed he had COVID-19 when The Washington Post reported that he died from the virus and acute respiratory failure.

Aldapa went into quarantine after the flight. He said he experienced COVID-19 symptoms for several days, including fatigue, body aches, a headache, and a cough, but after three negative tests, he doesn't think he has the virus.

"Looking back I would not change my actions, but I may have stepped up earlier," he said of helping Hernandez on Twitter. "Knowing I had the knowledge, training and experience to help out, I could not have sat idly by and watched someone die."

United had initially said Hernandez had died from cardiac arrest, though Hernandez's wife was overheard telling another EMT that her husband had COVID-19 symptoms including loss of taste and smell.

A United official previously told Business Insider that Hernandez had not informed the airline that he was experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, and that staff are now working with health officials to contact passengers who were on the flight.

"Now that the CDC has contacted us directly, we are sharing requested information with the agency so they can work with local health officials to conduct outreach to any customer the CDC believes may be at risk for possible exposure or infection," a spokesperson said last week.

Aldapa told Insider that he wants the other people who helped Hernandez to be recognized too, saying he wasn't the first to stand up.

"I was just helping out the other two people who were the first ones to get up. I feel like they deserve a lot more praise than I do," he said. "Unfortunately, I'm the one who got caught in the spotlight. I've seen one interview with the gentleman who was helping out, I wish I knew the name of the nurse who was helping, so she could get some recognition as well."

He also hopes to get in contact with Hernandez's wife to share his condolences.

Meanwhile, he said that he's learning all of his updates from the event by reading and watching the news.

He said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has yet to reach out to him.

In a statement to CBS Los Angeles, the CDC said it is "in the process of collecting information and proceeding according to our standard operating procedures to determine if further public health action is appropriate."

One can be in a hypercoagulable state with COVID so having a heart attack does not rule out covid. I would not perform mouth to mouth on anybody though and I havent done BLS training in a long time, I dont think mouth to mouth is necessary anymore.

by Anonymousreply 26December 24, 2020 9:03 PM

that man that gave CPR now has covid. I saw him on the news last night

by Anonymousreply 29December 24, 2020 10:04 PM

I’m worried about his relatively cavalier attitude about it.

[quote] "It didn't really matter," he told Insider. "I was already following protocols, quarantining and getting tested anyway."

Well, unfortunately now you’ve got it.

by Anonymousreply 30December 24, 2020 10:10 PM

This story is so fucked up, in SO MANY ways.

by Anonymousreply 31December 24, 2020 10:11 PM

Still waiting for Covid to magically disappear the way the president said it would.

by Anonymousreply 32December 24, 2020 10:30 PM

R29 No he doesn’t he has had 3 negative tests according to R25’s link.

I think the EMT and three others who provided CPR to Mr. Hernandez did the right thing. They used the bag valve mask during CPR so the risk of viral spread as result of resuscitation attempts was small. I think too the risk was small due to the patient being not responsive and never regained spontaneous breathing. Also, it’s worth noting that in many cases the virus is most likely to be transmitted when the patient is asymptomatic or just beginning to show mild symptoms.

by Anonymousreply 33December 24, 2020 11:01 PM

Selfish asshole. Knew he had Covid symptoms, lied about it on the form United makes you fill out at checkin, and then got on a fucking plane. Burn in hell asshole.

by Anonymousreply 34December 25, 2020 12:54 AM

The level of cluelessness and ignorance is mind numbing.

by Anonymousreply 35December 25, 2020 1:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 36December 25, 2020 1:11 AM

People insist on going on as usual. They HAVE to 'head home for the holidays.

Pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 37December 25, 2020 4:50 PM

Oh no! Covid is everywhere, on everything! We’re all going to die. Shut everything down, at once. Let’s all hide from the virus. That should do it, right?

by Anonymousreply 38December 25, 2020 5:10 PM

It would certainly help, asshole.

by Anonymousreply 39December 25, 2020 5:42 PM

No. There is a protocol established to contain the infection that works. Containment of the infection includes quarantine, avoiding unnecessary travel, social distancing in public along with wearing face coverings that cover your grotesque camel like nostrils and hideous fish mouth entirely. All of this is a minimal sacrifice compared to risk of being seriously ill and dying or passing along an infection to people you're literally dying to see.

There’s no requirement for strangers to help someone who is contagious. Doing so is against public health, since it spreads the disease.

by Anonymousreply 44December 25, 2020 10:18 PM

R44, most get into that field to help people.

Seeing someone literally code out in front of you makes you react. To stand there and do nothing because the patient may be contagious is unconscionable and anathema to most EMTs and other medical professionals.

It’s a risk you take. Generally you don’t know if the patient is contagious or not, especially if they’re unconscious. You do what you got to do.

It was not easy during the AIDS epidemic, I’ll tell you that, but if you can save a life....
