The entire set of 90210 hated Shannen Doherty

Apparently the writers adored her, but by season 4 the Producers hated her, the crew hated her and all the cast wanted her fired.

From an interview with Producer Larry Mollin (he worked on the show from seasons 4-7).

“Oh, it was sad. The Shannen one, we wanted her to work. I mean, the writers loved Shannen. She’s a child of this business. You give her a script and she’ll just read it exactly like you wrote it. Never change a word, never ask a question. She had a photographic memory. She could be doing anything she wanted the night before and just come in and nail it–and the other kids hated that. She’s tough on the set. She’s just a child of the industry. It’s not really who she is. She’s just whoever she plays, in a lot of ways. She’s just a kind of unusual, very talented professional but hard to get along with. She just kind of pissed everyone off eventually and she pissed off the most important person, which was, you know, Tori [Spelling, Donna]. And not only that, she introduced Tori to a man who beat her. So that pretty much put the death card on her. So that was pretty much that. I think they were willing to go with her but, basically, what happened was, in the middle of a show, she cut her hair and totally screwed us up for continuity so everyone was pissed off at her. Like I said, not the writers so much, but the producer people. And the other kids were out to get her head, because she had pissed everybody off, and they basically went to the old man [Aaron Spelling] and said she had to go. He was happy to let her go because, like I said, she had introduced Tori to the guy who beat her. I’m not going to mention his name. So that was just the way business was done there. The old man was never the bad guy. He would let everyone else be the bad guy and then he’d get rid of her and then bring her back again [in Charmed]. But it was unfortunate she left, because we had all intention of keeping her there. And I always feel bad, because it was my idea to send her to England to get acting lessons [Episode 5.31-2, Mr. Walsh Goes To Washington], which kind of became a bad joke because she was a good actress. I never thought she was a bad actress. That whole storyline came out of something that I really loved. I loved Tennessee Williams and we went to the estate and got the whole Cat on a Hot Tin Roof thing [Episodes 4.27-30]. We had the Laura Kingman suicide [Episode 4.29, Truth and Consequences]. It was kind of out there but it was good, it was fun. It was well-done and Shannen was good in it. But it was a way to get rid of her. But we, obviously, always kept her alive in season 5, 6 [by mentioning her]. We always meant to keep her and, of course, that’s the big relationship. Our largest triangle–her, Dylan and Kelly–that’s the crown jewels, as far as we were concerned. We would never do anything to harm that so we always just kept it going. And that’s what’s so harmful to me. All these careful things we did, these new people [on the new 90210] are just indiscriminate. Whatever they can get the jolt with, they do. There’s no thinking.”

They hated paragraphs too.

by Anonymousreply 1December 18, 2020 2:39 PM

She introduced Tori to a man who beat her. That was the final nail in her coffin.

by Anonymousreply 2December 18, 2020 2:41 PM

To be referred to as, “Oh, the Shannen One.” Enough said.

by Anonymousreply 3December 18, 2020 2:49 PM

This is all old news (except for the guy that beat Tori Spelling)

Considering they all reunited (including Shannen) for the 90210 reboot last year - they have pretty much kissed and made up,

Shannen & Jennie he re-connected and become friends again long before BOTH 90210 reboots

now saying this, the only person that stood by Shannen through the whole original 90210 drama was her friend Holly Marie Combs (before and after "Charmed")

But now apparently Holly Marie & Shannen are no longer friends.

by Anonymousreply 4December 18, 2020 2:53 PM

Shannen also didn’t get along with Alyssa Milano

by Anonymousreply 5December 18, 2020 2:55 PM

The person who is being interviewed in OP's link (Larry Mollin) is fucking annoying.

Rambling and repeating themselves and sounds like a HUGE rambling drama queen. Jesus Christ.

by Anonymousreply 6December 18, 2020 3:01 PM

If she performed her script letter-perfect, then the writers should have put in her script ‘in this episode don’t be a bitch to your co-stars’

by Anonymousreply 7December 18, 2020 3:03 PM

She was a cunt to everyone

by Anonymousreply 8December 18, 2020 6:37 PM

I remember devouring the Enquirer back in the 90's and I know they covered this...

R7 LOL

by Anonymousreply 10December 19, 2020 4:18 AM

Ridiculous. IF Shannen hadn't introduced Tori to the abusive man, we wouldn't have gotten the inspiration for Donna's powerful story of being abused by Ray.

They should thank Shannen for that!!

by Anonymousreply 11December 19, 2020 5:02 AM

She's nothin' but an asymmetrical face-havin', Picasso-lookin' Republican.

by Anonymousreply 12December 19, 2020 5:11 AM

Anyone ever meet her? I wonder how she is in real life. I always liked her, she doesn’t seem to go into the whole bullshit of sucking up to her peers. She never seemed to latch onto others to further herself. Maybe her career suffered as a result. But she was never in the Lindsay Lohan or Mischa Barton category of messed up.

by Anonymousreply 13December 19, 2020 5:15 AM

R9, and let's not forget that Nick Savalas and Nicolette Sheridan are half-siblings.

I know Shannen has owned up to being difficult, but I also believe the writer. Shannen was really the only one recognized for her acting in roles other than 90210. A lot of the other castmates were probably jealous. I imagine Tori Spelling could be just as difficult - if not more - at times.

by Anonymousreply 15December 19, 2020 5:24 AM

I've never understood why Shannen had to leave when Jennie and Tori seemed to be just as cunty, if not worse. At least Shannen was a good actress. Tori stayed, obviously, because of nepotism, not because of any inherent talent.

by Anonymousreply 16December 19, 2020 5:27 AM

Larry takes himself very, very seriously.

by Anonymousreply 17December 19, 2020 5:57 AM

[quote] Tori stayed, obviously, because of nepotism

Why do you say nepotism? Is there any proof?

by Anonymousreply 18December 19, 2020 6:40 AM

What drug is the writer on while giving this information?

by Anonymousreply 19December 19, 2020 7:09 AM

Most of this we already knew, but Tori Spelling’s boyfriend was some GOOD tea, thanks for digging that up R9.

Will always love Shannen. As everyone seems to agree, her work speaks for itself and some of her best acting is also on Charmed. The woman is indeed a professional. But I agree with R15 and R16. Tori CANNOT act her way out of a paper bag, she’s never been cute, and I am SURE she was drama because she was “the Old Guy’s” daughter. Hell, even her own Mama don’t deal with her.

As the writer said, I think they were jealous. I got into celebrity gossip at the tail end of the Shannen Doherty/Tara Reid party girl era and Shannen always knew when to go home. People are mad because Shannen is headstrong, no nonsense professional. People are haters.

The real tea NOW is why her and Holly are no longer friends....

by Anonymousreply 20December 19, 2020 7:31 AM

Shannen was the only real name when 90210 started. Heathers, Little House, Our House, etc...

Sure Priestley had that one season nun comedy but who the hell were Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering or Luke Perry before 90210?

by Anonymousreply 21December 19, 2020 7:35 AM

R20 from the hints that seem to be dropped in interviews... I think Holly maybe didn’t like dealing with a Shannen who was going through health issues and maybe didn’t want to be all about fun all of a sudden. Nothing official but that’s the impression I’ve got.

by Anonymousreply 22December 19, 2020 7:50 AM

I loved Shannen in Heathers - Heather Duke is one of my favorite characters and she nails every line.

I've always been a bit sad that she seems to be so difficult and has had such serious health issues as well.

by Anonymousreply 23December 19, 2020 8:09 AM

I do sympathise with Shannen. From what I read about her since leaving 90210 it seems she was frustrated that the show didn’t aspire to be more than a nighttime soap in the last series. I think she’d rather have been on a more hard hitting show than one about a bunch of young adults and their first world problems. By the time she left the show it seemed nobody wanted to work with her and that seems to have been cemented after her second chance with Charmed. Oh well... if it weren’t for her health issues maybe she could have made another come back on a limited series or something, perhaps that format would have suited her more.

by Anonymousreply 24December 19, 2020 8:09 AM

Being on a Spelling show had some stigma in the 80s and 90s. The Ryan Murphy troop seem to have more opportunities.

by Anonymousreply 25December 19, 2020 8:12 AM

[Quote] it seems she was frustrated that the show didn’t aspire to be more than a nighttime soap in the last series.

Shannen had the same problem with Charmed. Wanted it to go in a darker direction.

[Quote] The Ryan Murphy troop seem to have more opportunities.

Not the Glee ones. Half of them are dead.

by Anonymousreply 26December 19, 2020 8:20 AM

R26 I think Shannen wanted a HBO version of Charmed. I can’t blame her really.

by Anonymousreply 27December 19, 2020 8:23 AM

I would like a modern HBO version of Charmed as well- with a lot of male witch butt and full frontal, kind sir.

by Anonymousreply 28December 19, 2020 8:27 AM

R27 sounds like she wanted it to be as good as Buffy.

R28 i think Charmed will be staying on the CW. But there's always Dante's Cove lol

by Anonymousreply 29December 19, 2020 8:33 AM

The older Nick Savalas looks kind of hot.

by Anonymousreply 30December 19, 2020 8:43 AM

R14 Are they real half-siblings, or are they porno wink-wink “...but you’re my HALF-brother” half-siblings? 🤔

by Anonymousreply 31December 19, 2020 9:03 AM

[quote]Being on a Spelling show had some stigma in the 80s and 90s.

Not true. Aaron was big time in TV. In fact, he produced Dynasty, Starky &Hutch, the Mob Squad, Charly's Angels, Melrose Place, Hart to Hart, and others.

by Anonymousreply 32December 19, 2020 10:13 AM

I actually do remember reading about Nick Savalas in the tabloids. He and Tori, Shannen & Chris Foufas (and then Dean Factor) used to go out and also on vacations together. His abusiveness was in the tabloids; telling Tori how ugly she was, and physical abuse, too.

by Anonymousreply 33December 19, 2020 10:28 AM

R32 those shows were hits but I think it was tough for the actors to get work after starring in his shows. They became too identified. I think even Rupert Everett in his book used to describe parties being littered with whoever was “hot” on some Spelling show, as though it just referred to some flavour of the month. His shows were like a factory it seems. It churned out actors who mostly just floundered afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 34December 19, 2020 10:42 AM

R32 Maxwell Caulfield said the same thing, that being on a Spelling show although great at the time, doesn’t really give you much clout afterwards. People see you as more of a pretty face than an actor.

by Anonymousreply 35December 19, 2020 10:47 AM

That guy's right that the early writers on 90210 knew what they were doing. The show was fun and watchable and made you care about the characters and their story arcs. Once they bumrushed the old crew and made Jason Freaking Priestly an exec producer, the whole thing turned to shit. Season 5 was the last season with the old writing crew and the last watchable season.

by Anonymousreply 36December 19, 2020 11:35 AM

Is there a chance that Shannen is on the spectrum? It’s always harder to identify females who are, but it would explain some of the continued awkwardness socially that she seems to have on every set and why she she comes off as more oblivious about it than vicious?

by Anonymousreply 37December 19, 2020 12:18 PM

R37 I think she’s aware of the perception of her. So I think that rules her out of being on the spectrum. I think she’s just been in the business so long, she’s possibly a bit out of touch. Now I wonder what would have happened if she’d ever been recorded pulling a Christian Bale or Tom Cruise rant at somebody. I can’t imagine such a tantrum from her. Would love to be a fly on the wall of some of these sets.

by Anonymousreply 38December 19, 2020 12:32 PM

I worked as an entertainment reporter back in the 1990s and it was mostly fluff stuff or legit stuff but every now and then I had to get tabloid-y so when Shannen started acting up I was assigned to go to the courthouse and dig up some papers on a lawsuit.

She had some problems with ex-fiance Dean Factor - I recall reading in the papers she threatened to have some black guys sodomize him on his front lawn.

Check out the link for some other histrionics. I'll never get these hollywood brats lucking out and throwing it all away. They're unhinged.

Yep. I remember reading that story back in the day. Hot!

R36 no, season 7 was the last watchable season.

by Anonymousreply 43December 20, 2020 2:04 PM

R43 season 7 was a struggle to get through.

by Anonymousreply 44December 21, 2020 2:00 AM

Didn't Shannen steal Melissa Gilbert's man, or something like that?

by Anonymousreply 45December 21, 2020 2:26 AM

R45 yeah she did. And good for her.

by Anonymousreply 46December 21, 2020 2:31 AM

She banged Melissa's first ex-husband after they split

by Anonymousreply 47December 21, 2020 2:42 AM

After this revelation I think I saw Shannen on “The Talk” sitting next to Sara Gilbert. No tension there. If she was going after Melissa Gilbert’s exes specifically, I would have set my target on Rob Lowe!
