The Greatest Story Ever Told

Now on TCM.

I think it's hilarious that Ben Mankiewicz has to talk about Christmas and introduce this movie.

Especially since he probably doesn't believe in any of it.

As usual, Charlton Heston is chewing up the scenery.

And he isn't even the STAR of the movie!

by Anonymousreply 1December 18, 2020 5:19 AM

They made a movie out of the Debbie-Eddie-Elizabeth love triangle?

by Anonymousreply 2December 18, 2020 5:23 AM

I had no idea Charlie Heston was in that. Is that Jeffrey Hunter or Max Von Sydow as Jesus?

by Anonymousreply 3December 18, 2020 5:24 AM

The latter, R3. Hunter was in King of Kings which TCM aired right before The Greatest Story Ever Told.

This is actually a pretty cool movie.

I never saw it before. At least it's not campy like the Ten Commandments.

Shelly Winters as "The Woman who is healed" redeems it with her unerringly instinct for camp.

All religious films are campy, R5.

by Anonymousreply 7December 18, 2020 6:47 AM

I had to turn it off after 15 minutes.

I got really bored.

Is this what you queens have been reduced to watching since PornHub removed their videos? The struggle, as they say, is real.

Who was George Stevens? Half his films were duds and the others relied on the stars to carry them.

Was Max Von Sydow attractive then? He always seemed so etiolated and unpalatable.

Some of the 12 disciples were attractive but this long, drawn-out film seems rather fake in there being filmed in Arizona (I assume) and downright risible when Marion Morrison appears.

The cast is insane

Max von Sydow as Jesus. Dorothy McGuire as the Virgin Mary. Charlton Heston as John the Baptist. Claude Rains as Herod the Great. José Ferrer as Herod Antipas. Telly Savalas as Pontius Pilate. Martin Landau as Caiaphas. David McCallum as Judas Iscariot.

Smaller, credited roles (some only a few seconds) were played by Michael Ansara, Carroll Baker, Ina Balin, Robert Blake, Pat Boone, Victor Buono, John Considine, Richard Conte, John Crawford, Cyril Delevanti, Jamie Farr, David Hedison, Van Heflin, Russell Johnson, Angela Lansbury, Mark Lenard, Robert Loggia, John Lupton, Janet Margolin, Sal Mineo, Nehemiah Persoff, Sidney Poitier, Gary Raymond, Marian Seldes, David Sheiner, Abraham Sofaer, Paul Stewart, Michael Tolan, John Wayne, and Shelley Winters. Richard Bakalyan and Marc Cavell, in uncredited roles, played the thieves crucified with Jesus.

[quote] The cast is insane

The cast of the Zeffirelli version is even more insane but the inclusion of so many stars distract me from what the so-called 'greatest story ever told' is actually supposed to be about.

The late, great Max Von Sydow was a very Scandinavian Jewish Messiah.

To think that George Stevens started out directing Wheeler and Wolsey . . .
