Are you a Jackson Browne fan?

I love "Running on Empty."

It's the perfect Summer song.

He used to be so cute. I would have had a major crush on him, if I was in that age group.

Is it true that he's HUNG large?

Didn't Daryl Hannah say that she was the one frequently "Running On Empty" to escape Jackson's violent beatings, when they were in a relationship?

by Anonymousreply 1December 18, 2020 6:16 AM

Seriously, R1??

Isn't he too old to have dated Daryl Hannah?

I never would have thought that he was violent towards women. He looks so mellow.

R2, just did some quick research. It looks as if Jackson & Daryl dated in the 80s, into the early 90s. One of the beatings supposedly occurred in 1992. Just prior to Daryl's relationship with JFK Jr.

It looks as if things came to a head some years back when that particular beating was dramatized in a JFK Jr. TV biopic. Jackson sued and had the scene removed.

Everything is discussed in the article I've attached. Someone claiming to be Daryl's uncle wrote a letter to the article author and confirmed Jackson beating Daryl. Jackson (and his lawyers) responded through a few letters of their own.

I don't know what to believe? I read a Laura Nyro biography years ago and the author hints that Jackson was abusive to her as well when they were in a relationship.

Daryl seems to have made a habit of dating potentially abusive men. I personally recall that years ago on Howard Stern's E! Show, she hinted that Val Kilmer was abusive towards her as well.

The violence against Daryl Hannah wouldn’t have become public knowledge, had the ladder he stood on to reach her with his fists not come forward to Us Magazine with its exclusive story.

by Anonymousreply 6December 18, 2020 6:52 AM

They were a cute couple.

I love JB and am a huge fan. Some random info- Joni Mitchell despises him. She mentions the Daryl fiasco in one of her songs and has a page on her website dedicated to her side of the story.. Of course, she hooked up with him as well- and comes off extremely bitter. He was also with Nico. Currently with a anti-plastic activist. Lots of Geffen rumors, not sure if they're true. Quite possible. His first wife committed suicide in the family home he wrote much of the For Everyman album in. His brother Severin lives there now.

I can't believe that Jackson and Daryl are 12 years apart.

He looks pretty good for his age. Or at least, he used to.

I wonder what the convo is like at the Daryl/Neil house when someone mentions Neil's old buddy Jackson.

by Anonymousreply 10December 18, 2020 7:04 AM

I wonder about his ancestry. Jackson Browne was gorgeous as a young man, Nico(Velvet Underground chartreuse) got to fuck him when he was 17 -- played the guitar on her first album. Only problem with Jackson, is that he has written the same sounding fucking song for 40 years. Couldn't he be more original?

by Anonymousreply 11December 18, 2020 7:05 AM

Maybe he's Running on Empty, R11.

How did Daryl Hannah go from Jackson Browne, to JFK Jr., to..... Neil Young???!!!!

From JB's wiki page:

"Browne was born October 9, 1948, in Heidelberg, Germany, where his father Clyde Jack Browne, an American serviceman, was stationed for his job assignment with the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Browne's mother, Beatrice Amanda (née Dahl), was a Minnesota native of Norwegian ancestry."

Joni Mitchell always has been a miserable cunt, and one of those women who somehow always has gotten a free pass for her dumping her issues on other people. People always need their Saint Hot Mother figures. Which she's not.

by Anonymousreply 19December 18, 2020 2:11 PM

Of course DLers take the good looking but abusive man’s side.

Jackson beat women. And not just Daryl Hannah- he had a gf in the ‘70s who committed suicide after suffering terrible abuse at his hands. That’s what Joni sang about.

Joni has also said in interviews that Browne’s mother warned her not to date him. I expect he hit her too. Also, Joni has more musical talent in her big toe than Jackson has in his whole body.

He’s scum, and his career output is dull overall.

by Anonymousreply 20December 18, 2020 2:52 PM

I do not know if I would say that I am a fan, but in my collection of 509 albums, I have one Jackson Browne album, which is "Running On Empty".

by Anonymousreply 21December 18, 2020 2:58 PM

How would Joni know what Phyllis Major (who was his wife, not his girlfriend) "suffered," R20? She was a troubled drug addict before she and Jackson met and there is absolutely no evidence that he physically abused her, much less that his abuse led to her suicide. It's hard to think of a modern pop star with personal and professional relationships as troubled as Joni Mitchell, she is simply not a reliable narrator here. Daryl Hannah is also a malignant narcissist; she started dating JFK Jr while she was still with Browne and Jackie O despised her; Hannah forced JFK Jr to attend her dog's funeral instead of visiting Jackie in the hospital shortly before she died. JFK Jr acknowledged in an interview with Dan Rather in 1996 that Daryl had a tendency to "exaggerate" because of her Asperger's. She never pressed charges and there was never a full police investigation.

R22 makes excuses for men who beat women.

by Anonymousreply 23December 18, 2020 3:21 PM

David Geffen was obsessed with him. I have no idea if Browne ever gave in to Geffen, but Geffen promoted the fuck out of Browne.

Browne was highly regarded by many of his peers in Laurel Canyon as a superior musician and songwriter, and a hard worker; however, I trust Joni Mitchell's POV on the abuse charges. She had been Browne's loyal friend and supporter until then.

[quote] David Geffen was obsessed with him. I have no idea if Browne ever gave in to Geffen

Geffen probably wouldn't have minded being smacked around by Browne, either.

by Anonymousreply 25December 18, 2020 4:42 PM

Read "Girls Like Us" to see how awful he was to women.

by Anonymousreply 26December 18, 2020 4:54 PM

Not really R26. Joni's a lunatic.

“One night at the Troubadour bar Jackson Browne saw a beautiful young blonde being screamed at by her boyfriend. Browne interceded in her defense (“I was doing my very best Bogart” is how he put it, in his “Ready or Not”), and the boyfriend threw a punch at Browne. Browne’s gallantry was rewarded; he went home with the damsel in distress, a Southern California girl who, with her mother’s booking and chaperoning assistance, had recently been a successful model in Europe. Her name was Phyllis Major. Jackson’s attention to Phyllis Major felt, to Joni, like “a great loss and a great mind-fuck,” says her confidante. One night Joni was at her apartment on that hilly street, expecting Jackson to come over. He didn’t show up. What happened next Joni has described to several people as her “suicide attempt.” One confidante says she said she “took pills. She cut herself up and threw herself against a wall and got completely bloodied—glass broke. She vomited up the pills.” According to one confidante, David Geffen came to her rescue and got her medical help. Joni wrote a song, “Car on a Hill,” about that evening. The narrator worries because her lover is an hour late, but rejection, not catastrophe, is what she really fears is the reason the car is not—as she tensely puts it—“CLIMB-ing / CLIMB-ing / climbing the hill.” Excerpt From: Sheila Weller. “Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon — and the Journey of a Generation.” Apple Books.

“Meanwhile, as Joni was recovering from her breakdown in the sophisticated, hip Hollywood fishbowl, Jackson was making a life with Phyllis Major. Phyllis had quickly become pregnant, and their baby boy, Ethan, was born in early November 1973. Joni remained deeply angry at Jackson for years. Said percussionist Don Alias, who became her serious boyfriend for several years in the late 1970s, “She really had this hatred of Jackson Browne; the whole Jackson Browne thing was really heavy for her.” A woman very close to Joni was left with the belief that “you may have to be very strong to take on Jackson—from what I’ve heard he’s a classic example of someone who has a Madonna-and-whore complex.” (However, Jackson’s pre-Joni girlfriend Salli Sachse experienced nothing negative in their relationship.) The Jackson Browne story had a tragic dimension that kept it smoldering for Joni. Shortly before or after she married Jackson (in December 1975, two years after their son was born), Phyllis Major attempted suicide. People in their immediate circle knew about the attempt; among other things, she’d “People in their immediate circle knew about the attempt; among other things, she’d discreetly stolen drugs from them for that purpose. “Phyllis went around and gathered up everything,” says one woman who was a close friend. “I had some chloral hydrate”—a sedative—“and a little vial of opium, and she just scooped up everything. She left notes for everybody—to me, to Jackson—saying ‘I’m sorry’ and words to the effect of, ‘I can’t stand the pain.’” Phyllis was revived in time. But then, on March 25, 1976, with two-and-a-half-year-old Ethan and the nanny in an adjacent room, Phyllis succeeded in taking enough drugs to kill herself. “It was terrible, just terrible,” says the friend. The tragedy was a brushfire through their circle, which Joni memorialized in a coded reference in her 1976 “Song for Sharon” on Hejira. Their friend had “drowned” herself—perhaps, Joni noted with an esoteric pointedness, to “punis[h] somebody.”* Joni attended Phyllis Major Browne’s funeral in Santa Barbara (Jackson was angry that she’d come).

Thanks for the excerpts, R28. GIRLS LIKE US is a good read.

But Joni still doesn't sound like a lunatic to me. Vindictive, angry, petty perhaps. (We fans knew that about her already.) But not a lunatic.

Jackson sent Geffen a headshot of himself and a letter of introduction. Geffen didn't just promote the hell out of him without anything in return.

That is such a turn on, R30.

Skinny and tall guys like Jackson are usually hung!

It's amusing to me that Browne's defender thinks he comes off well in that account.

"I'm Alive" is a great album; great post-break up listening

by Anonymousreply 33December 18, 2020 7:15 PM

R11 Facile and wrong to assert he's "written the same song".... even on his best album, Late for the Sky (and iconic LA singer-songwriter work), the songs are varied. Same voice? Duh, yes. Same cleverness with words? Yah. Same song... not even. Jeremiads, long songs, anthems, party songs.

by Anonymousreply 34December 18, 2020 7:28 PM

[28] Joni's not crazy, but she seems to have used every man in her life.

by Anonymousreply 35December 18, 2020 9:23 PM

Woman-beater

by Anonymousreply 36December 18, 2020 10:01 PM

He's a budget Don Henley. At least Henley had his shenanigans investigated and formally thrown out. Browne just got a knock on the door by the SMPD, cleared of everything and vindictive, whiny, pie-faced Joni (the only one that cares still) just can't let getting dumped a million years ago go.

I agree with R10- I'd LOVE to know how that convo goes. Daryl is a total piece of work.

by Anonymousreply 37December 22, 2020 8:41 AM

How's your relationship with your daughter Joni? My son Ethan (whom you trashed as a child) and I get along just fine.

by Anonymousreply 38December 22, 2020 8:43 AM

Can we get back to the hung bit in OP?

by Anonymousreply 39December 22, 2020 10:50 AM

Jackson is skinny, with a long face R39.

You do the math!
