Seventies Era Supermodels: An Appreciation

I don't know if it was the photographers, fashions, disco or cocaine of the day, but these girls photographed with a glamour & sophistication that we haven't seen since. The 1980s/90s crop of models had their moments but it wasn't the same. (Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid & the rest of today's idiots aren't fit to hold Cristina Ferrare's tampons!)

Iman, Apollonia van Ravenstein, (pre-crack) Janice Dickinson, Rosie Vela, Pat Cleveland, Rene Russo, Christie Brinkley, Nancy Donahue, Gia Carangi, Beverly Johnson, Patti Hansen, Bitten Knudsen, Jerry Hall, Lisa Taylor & so many more! Who reigned supreme? Discuss (and post) your favorites!

Janice Dickinson was never even pretty and was so cheap looking. Lisa Taylor I think was the prettiest, but she was so fucked up. I read that book Model about that whole era it was a great read.

I'm not that into modeling, but I'm fascinated by how free-wheeling that era was. Posing nude at a photographer's apartment? While the two of you do coke together? Kudos to all who survived -- seriously!

Is it the pose, the makeup, or her anatomy in OP's photo? Because her breasts look terribly uneven. Beyond what one should typically expect.

Even though she's associated with the 60s, because that's when she made her debut, Lauren Hutton was THE supermodel of the 70s. That's when she shot most of her (now 27) American Vogue covers, that's when she signed her Revlon contract, and that's when she started doing a lot of film and TV work...

I once stood behind Patti Hansen in the Gristede's checkout line in the early 80s. She was low-key but incredibly sexy. I seem to recall a tank top, tight jeans, boots...a rock chick look. It was probably around the time she got together with Keith Richards. I watched a black teenage boy stare at her in utter slackjawed disbelief; he clearly couldn't wrap his head around the hotness he beheld. She was sweet about it, treated him to a flirtatious grin.

Another time I brushed past Lauren Hutton on Fifth Avenue. Tall and imposing, hair, a real presence.

Not 70s, but got a pretty good gander at Cindy Crawford on a shoot in SoHo around 1990. Her body and features were more petite than I expected.

Ah, the good old days in New York....

by Anonymousreply 13December 13, 2020 2:09 AM

R6, it's the pose. I think it's part the way she's posed and possibly that her boobs were taped unevenly. It's still a gorgeous shot!

Cristina Ferrare was known to pick up weight. (According to Beverly Johnson) if her garment didn't fit she'd snap "I'm Cristina Ferrare! Cut it up the back!" LOL. The cover at OP looks as if it could be one of those garments.

by Anonymousreply 14December 13, 2020 2:14 AM

I was mystified when I read that Marie Helvin was a supermodel in the 1970s. In the 1990s, she looked like Sarah Brightman dressed as "Bad girl" Sandy from GREASE.

Hate to be a DL cliche - but Gia will always be my 70s model fantasy - her crazy life, almost masculine features, big lips with huge breasts - all packed in a lesbian with attitude from Philly. A myth more than reality - but a 70s prototype.

by Anonymousreply 21December 13, 2020 2:55 AM

Gia had BDE, not masculine features.

by Anonymousreply 22December 13, 2020 2:59 AM

I never got the love for Cheryl Tiegs. She wasn't all that.

by Anonymousreply 23December 13, 2020 3:00 AM

R14 she and cybill Shepherd were the “big boned” models. R23 me neither. I think that corn fed look was just so in back then that even someone fairly unremarkable was considered a “beauty.” Shes friends with a good friend of mine though and seems cool.

by Anonymousreply 24December 13, 2020 3:05 AM

I knew it was coming R21. I don't think Gia was the best model of that era by any means, but she did look gorgeous in a lot of her early shots. IMO (and for obvious reasons), she lost some of her spark towards the end. I think most of her fans are more enthralled by her lesbianism, tragic ending and by that movie, than by anything she ever did in front of a camera.

by Anonymousreply 25December 13, 2020 3:06 AM

Rene!

by Anonymousreply 26December 13, 2020 3:08 AM

R23, I completely agree. Cheryl Tiegs was cute/pretty in a California surfer girl kinda way, but she was NEVER one of the great beauties. I personally find her looks laughable compared to some of the other top models of the day. But somehow she managed to become the most successful. I think it was simply a matter of good promo (the nipple poster), good management and being in the right place at the right time.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 27December 13, 2020 3:12 AM

R27 she also had (what in my opinion is, but many would disagree) a great body. Tall but not freakish tall (5’9”) skinny but not ED looking, and some tasteful modest curves,

by Anonymousreply 28December 13, 2020 3:15 AM

Patti Hansen will always be THE 70s model. She was such a fresh face after the Christina Ferrera’s and others that had that look

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 29December 13, 2020 3:15 AM

Cheryl Tiegs in the 60s did some fashion shoots that were fantastic. It was in the 70s that her shoots became generic. Tiegs has a very symmetrical face which makes her photogenic though not stunningly beautiful. Her face is as symmetrical as you can get which is a rarity even amongst models.

I think Christie Brinkley was gorgeous back in the day...great bone structure and thin but curvy body. She has also aged the best of this group...although lately she needs to stop with the fillers....

by Anonymousreply 35December 13, 2020 3:49 AM

I adore Rosie Vela. Not only gorgeous, but a talented singer, too.

by Anonymousreply 36December 13, 2020 3:54 AM

You said that just as I was prepping a Christie Brinkley post, R35. She just always had "IT"! She was gorgeous in the 70s when she was doing more Fashion oriented modeling. And she still fit right into the 80s when she switched to the more lucrative Spokesmodel/Swimsuit type modeling.

I agree that unfortunately she's went overboard with the fillers lately.

R49, young Cheryl Ladd (during her modeling/Josie & The Pussycat days) was gorgeous! She's STILL a very attractive woman, but something was different about her appearance by the time she appeared on Charlie's Angels. It could just simply be the change in hair color or a bit of work she had done? I don't know and can't quite put my finger on it?

I was on the fashion show circuit for several years and also worked in philanthropy - special event productions a number of years and have met tons of supermodels. Christie Brinkley isn't my genre of model, or beauty, or fashion at all. BUT, she has the highest wattage of any model I've ever met. I don't know about now, as she is now a miraculous cryptkeeper made up to look good on camera, but particularly in the 80s and 90s, when she was past her model sell by date, she was blindingly !!SUPERMODEL!! every time I saw her. She just radiated that. Still does, at least on camera. She is probably a sorceress of some kind. She beams supermodel energy and nobody has that much energy.

Cheryl Tiege’s was MOST upset by having a plus sized model on the cover of “Sports Illustrated” in 2016:
But it seems not everyone’s pleased. E! News spoke with swimsuit issue veteran Cheryl Tiegs about Sports Illustrated’s decision to feature more varied body types — and the former model was [italic]not [/italic]having it.
“I don’t like it that we’re [now] talking about full-figured women, because it’s glamorizing them — and your waist should be smaller than 35 [inches],” the 68-year-old explained. “That’s what Dr. Oz said, and I’m sticking to it. I don’t think it’s healthy.” (It should be notes that a 2014 study published by the British Medical Journal found that at least half of television Dr. Mehmet Oz’s medical advice is either without base or entirely wrong.)
Then, in what seemed to be a blatantly backhanded (and classically fat-shaming) attempt to soften her comments, Tiegs added, “[Graham’s] face is beautiful. Beautiful.”

I like ‘70s models and high fashion photos because the art direction had a flair about it that you don’t see today. Also models back then didn’t have fake tits, they were proud of their natural small or full tits. You have models with flat tits like Margaux Hemingway or full raindrop tits like Marie Helvin, they’d still get their tits out in shoots or at clubs they didn’t fucking care.

For the Marie Helvin fans (and un-fans) here. She had this perfect body that she would hide with baggy clothes and not so great posture. Maybe she was just shy, and this was before she became a model. I always thought of her as this flat chested, skinny ragamuffin thing. She was always quirky and odd, with overdone eye makeup and a gypsy vibe for clothing. One day we were high and hiking to a waterfall in Hawaii. She took off her clothes and exposed what was underneath. Under her floppy clothing she had the most perfect body and breasts I had ever seen. You know how some will say that a person has champagne glass breasts? I was so taken aback by the perfection of her body that I gasped. It's no wonder she became famous. It was her destiny IMO. She just needed to know the right people and it seems this was to be David Bailey.

I don't mean to make light of sexual harassment, but this just sounds comical for some reason.

Beverly Johnson was the first black woman to appear on the cover of Vogue.

She was also raped by Bill Cosby.

Beverly used to scare men because she was always "no fucks given".

Iman is petite and very soft spoken. Both gorgeous but very different women.

I loved Patti Hansen. Among the "all-American, girl-next-door" blondes that dominated the scene in the mid-to-late 70s, she was the one who had the most range. Disco glam, slutty rocker chick, high-class eurotrash whore...she could do it all! And this "comeback" Vogue Italia cover was a stunner.

Did Dayle try for a movie career?

by Anonymousreply 137December 22, 2020 3:41 AM

Patti Hansen is also very religious now, a born again Christian who doesn't believe in premarital sex. She and Keith met at the right time in her life.

by Anonymousreply 138December 22, 2020 4:38 AM

Really r138. Wonder what flipped in her brain. I know we change and grow up. But, her reversal is a little too much. I’m guessing her daughters ain’t virgins

by Anonymousreply 139December 22, 2020 4:45 AM

Patti had bladder cancer, maybe Stage 4, that she was very lucky to beat and it may be related to that, as well as to her upbringing. She has done interviews to educate on symptoms and early detection and treatment. Apparently, she only went to the doctor after she began peeing blood at the end of one of the Stones tours.

by Anonymousreply 151December 22, 2020 7:12 AM

R150, well, the rumor is, Dino De Laurentiis wanted her fleshier for King Kong, so he told her to gain 20 lbs and paid for new breasts. Just a year prior, she was nearly anorexic. Look at that big head and sunken chest.

I could be wrong, of course, but Lange doesn’t seem like the type to agree to a boob job to break into movies. And if the producer had demanded implants, you’d think he’d pick bigger ones.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 156December 22, 2020 7:40 AM

Actually, no. Giant implants were an 80s/90s thing.

by Anonymousreply 157December 22, 2020 7:43 AM

R154, Dino decided that Dayle was too skinny and not sexy enough. He thought the same thing about Lange when he first laid eyes on her. But she glowed in her screen test and gave her a chance. Perhaps Dayle didn't have the IT factor.

On another note, Lauren Hutton had moderate success in the movie business (The Gambler, American Gigolo). But, I guess she never really set the world on fire as a leading lady.

by Anonymousreply 158December 22, 2020 7:46 AM

Lange's ALL THAT JAZZ co-star, Sandahl Bergman, had small implants.

Beverly Johnson also had a short-lived "singing" career. In 1979 she released the Disco/Funk/R&B LP "Don't Lose The Feeling on Buddah Records. The singles were 'Don't Lose The Feeling (Theme From Ashanti)' and 'Can You Feel It'.

I owned this album at one time. Miss Johnson isn't much of a singer, but surprisingly she was given a quality production job. The album as a whole isn't memorable but the two singles are above-average R&B/Disco numbers. They could have been contenders if Beverly was able to sing even a little bit. But she couldn't.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 160December 22, 2020 7:48 AM

Wasn't Hutton the "older woman" in GIGOLO? She was already too old for leading lady and had too much competition for older woman roles.

'Don't Run For Cover' by Beverly Johnson. A pretty good LP cut that wasn't a single.

R163, absolutely! I guess quality productions were ust the order of the day back then. All those seasoned studio musicians, strings, horns, background vocalists, etc. And Charo's 'Dance A Little Bit Closer' & her version of 'The Theme From Love Boat' kick ass! Disco classics!

I got in a funny conversation one time in college with a classmate about Kim Basinger. I was out, so gay thing not an issue with my friends but when her name came up I mentioned she was the only woman I found so attractive I could have sex with her. The guy I was talking too said that makes senses, he didn't find her attractive because she looked like a man with that strong jaw.

I caught this juicy little tidbit on (Johnny Carson's second wife) Joanne Carson's IMDB Page:

Anyone else ever heard anything about this?

Not into the blond/Sears Catalog model look of Cheryl Tiegs, Jerry Hall, Christie Brinkley, or Lisa Taylor, but I respect their game.

I like the boho faces and personalities. YSL muses Loulou de la Falaise (RIP) and Betty Catroux, for instance. They walked a fine line between aristocratic lineage and Euro sleaze, and their photos had a homoerotic undertone that you didn't see with the cornfed/catalog types.

YSL, Loulou and Betty Catroux were photographed so often together during that decade, it came off a little ménage à trois.
Another time I brushed past Lauren Hutton on Fifth Avenue. Tall and imposing, hair, a real presence.

Unless you are very short or Lauren was in heels, she was never considered tall. She's 5'7", which is not at all tall for a fashion model. I've worked with models who are 5'10" and taller.

Celia Hammond (discovered by the photographer Norman Parkinson) was technically a creature of the London mod-era 1960's (b. 1941) but had some extraordinary high-fashion photos well into the 1970's when she was over 30 years of age. She was an early and vocal anti-fur activist and has remained engaged in animal rights issues over the years.

I'm surprised she didn't hook up with Paul McCartney, with whom she seems simpatico (who knows? maybe she did).

After Loulou died, Betty Catroux wrote a wonderful tribute to her in Harper's Bazaar about their years-long friendship. What a wonderful tribute. I'm happily surprised that two women traveling in that sphere, 1970's high-fashion and all the decadence it implied, would have had such a long-lasting bond.

Someone should do a Betty-and-Loulou biopic. The Oscar is theirs to lose.
