What Is Deadnaming, and How to Avoid It: Ellen Page Edition

[quote] Practice (on your own time)

[quote] If you find that you’re having a difficult time remembering to use a trans person’s name or pronouns, Kleine suggests putting the time and effort into changing that. “Sometimes that means practicing when they’re not around, just getting comfortable with new pronouns to make sure that you can get it right when you are around this person that you care about,” they said. What would this look like? Perhaps just repeating the name while thinking of the person’s face, and saying it aloud alongside their pronouns.

Ellen wants you. to think about her gender when you’re reading, trying to work, having sex, taking a shit, etc.

I will not talk to them at all, and that is easier for all of us.

by Anonymousreply 1December 10, 2020 3:25 PM

Well! Now I know what to worry about instead of the virus, my family, home, and job. Thanks Elliot Page!

by Anonymousreply 2December 10, 2020 3:25 PM

She is not a man and I will never refer to her as such. If she’s a man she must give back all her awards and accolades she won as an ACTRESS. Category fraud.

by Anonymousreply 3December 10, 2020 3:29 PM

I don't personally know any trans and don't plan on changing that

by Anonymousreply 4December 10, 2020 3:33 PM

Page is not transitioning into anything. She was a woman, she is a woman and she always will be a woman.

by Anonymousreply 5December 10, 2020 3:38 PM

I think I'll stop worrying about the gay men being thrown off the tops of buildings in the Middle East, and the millions of girls still undergoing FGM in Africa, and and the women in Iran who aren't allowed to publicly appear unveiled and ride bicycles, and start worrying about what REALLY matters-- the pronouns of wealthy, white Americans!

by Anonymousreply 6December 10, 2020 3:40 PM

True r5. Presumably she is reticent to discuss the more obvious signs of her deteriorating mental health.

by Anonymousreply 7December 10, 2020 3:40 PM

can't avoid it when you morons keep posting about it

by Anonymousreply 8December 10, 2020 3:41 PM

What is she (actress Ellen Page) complaining about now?

by Anonymousreply 9December 10, 2020 3:43 PM

Everyone knows that if you wear plaid shirts and ride a bike, you're a boy! It's progressive! #StopTheHate

"all her awards and accolades"

Um, which ones?

by Anonymousreply 11December 10, 2020 4:00 PM

It’s especially hard to get my stepchild’s new pronouns right because not only have I known them for 12 years as a girl, I have ADHD and it’s hell. As a result because I don’t want to trigger another self-harming episode I just avoid them.

by Anonymousreply 12December 10, 2020 4:06 PM

It’s so pretty.

by Anonymousreply 13December 10, 2020 4:15 PM

I imagine that many families have felt about us gays the same way we feel about Elliot, fine, but can you just shut up about it. Get your therapist to validate you and spare us the details, dude.

This is my first contribution to any of the trans threads, it's not a personal to me. It's easy for me to understand FTM because it's easier to be a man. But to go through all the trouble of looking like an ugly woman/transvestite makes no sense to me at all. Stay home and play dress -up but you can't go out looking extreme without expecting push back.

It’s all about strangers, superiors at work, traditional authority figures, medical professionals, “affirming” their gender.

In other words....control.

You see a truck driver in a whore’s dress and you are commanded to call him “ma’am” despite what you own eyes, and reality, are telling you. It’s all about pathetic mentally ill people controlling others. It’s not in good faith. Don’t fall for their manipulation.

by Anonymousreply 15December 10, 2020 4:24 PM

I don't get the whole wanting to be identified as trans when you have no plans to physically transition through surgery/hormones. That's what I got from Elliot's annoucement, that they were not planning to. So why make a fuss. They like looking masculine. So? How is this any different than what's been happening with them in recent years.

by Anonymousreply 16December 10, 2020 4:30 PM

This thread will end in tears!!

by Anonymousreply 17December 10, 2020 4:31 PM

From the article: "Deadnaming is far more than simply calling a person by the wrong name. It can also have a significant impact on a trans individual’s well-being. “We choose names that are correct for us. And often, our legal name, deadname, former name isn’t appropriate for trans people,” Oliver-Ash Kleine, a journalist and founding member of the TJA tells Lifehacker. “It takes away our autonomy. It takes away our right to self-determination, and often undermines our gender, and our identity. It’s really unaffirming, and it can be quite distressing.”

These people are fucking mental cases. How do they get through life being that emotionally weak?

by Anonymousreply 18December 10, 2020 4:42 PM

Honestly why should live be so complicated. If they want to do such a cockamamie thing fine. People can be polite to a trans just as much as to any stranger or casual acquaintance. Ellen Page is VERY famous, compared to most people, and thousands upon thousand of people are going to use Ellen Page just by forgetfulness or ignorance: She really can't control this and she should pick her battles. Some of these people want 100% of all their personally set little rules. The public simply doesn't work that way.

by Anonymousreply 19December 10, 2020 4:48 PM

R3 Same goes for Bruce Jenner. He needs to give back every Olympic Gold medal and each medal should be awarded to whoever won Silver.

by Anonymousreply 20December 10, 2020 4:49 PM

The public barely accepts when an actor tries to SING, or a singer tries to direct. Ask Babs about it.

Did you notice that William Macy didn't get ANY public blame for his daughter's college scam? Why? Because he's Frank Gallagher, what do you expect from a loser like that?

Pick a gender and stick with it. Goddamn it.

by Anonymousreply 21December 10, 2020 4:55 PM

[quote] All of this data and expert opinion aside, it also should be unnecessary for us to spell out why you shouldn’t deadname someone. You should use a person’s chosen name because it is the name they have chosen—it the very least you can do to show them respect. If it helps, think of it this way: If a friend gets married and changes their last name, you wouldn’t stubbornly insist on using the one you’re more familiar with.

But right at the beginning of the article, the author says it was transphobic of the media to merely MENTION Page's "deadname" (how can anyone over sixteen say or write that word with a straight face). No one has a nervous breakdown if someone says, "Jenny Blackwell got married last year, she's Jenny Carter now."

by Anonymousreply 22December 10, 2020 4:55 PM

Yea, nobody cares. Dead is their career after this.

by Anonymousreply 23December 10, 2020 4:57 PM

It's so obvious he's a man, you transphobes. He's put on a baseball cap. End the bigotry.

by Anonymousreply 24December 10, 2020 4:57 PM

As a responsible society we should not contribute to the delusions of the mentally ill.

This is all about controlling others and not themselves, otherwise trans people would just be content to live their lives quietly as see themselves and feel.

The name part is a dead giveaway, it’s only different by two letters at the end and this is deemed as critical to their self esteem. It’s a fucking joke and I’m not laughing or playing along.

by Anonymousreply 25December 10, 2020 4:57 PM

I’ll always have Tegan and Sara dammit!

by Anonymousreply 26December 10, 2020 5:01 PM

I changed my surname when I was eighteen. I couldn't give a fuck if someone mentioned my previous surname.

by Anonymousreply 27December 10, 2020 5:18 PM

She will always be Ellen Cunt Page

by Anonymousreply 28December 12, 2020 7:10 PM

I have a friend who transitioned and made a minor name adjustment, from Christian to Christina. She gets massively depressed when she receives mail with her deadname, but c'mon. She switched around the final two characters, it is bound to happen.

by Anonymousreply 29December 12, 2020 7:18 PM

This bugaboo cult about naming dead people is just as ant-science as ±

I'm not going to bother with this transvestite's behaviour because I just know they'll stop being a transvestite in 3 years time.

by Anonymousreply 31December 12, 2020 7:25 PM

I'm sure Ellen will be resurrected in a few years when de-transitioning is the new big thing.

by Anonymousreply 32December 12, 2020 7:33 PM

These discretionary transvestites alway change their mind.

It's called Recidivism.
