Just for kicks, my partner and I watched the Shawn Mendes interview/ 'film' (?) last night on Netflix.

Even better pop music nowadays is often fairly bland - imho necessarily so, because if you design something to appeal to everyone, you tend to take away all the edges. Then you're left with something pleasant, but unexciting to listen to. It's great to have it on your spotify playlist while driving, at work or during cleaning your house and that's it. But more is often not really necessary, because sales numbers nowadays largely consist of streams, which often means background playlist music. Or appealing to enthusiastic younger people, who necessarily know less music yet and orient themselves by what's popular among their peers right now (see BTS's immense success).

Most people over 30 I know, who love music beyond just having nice playlists for car drives, tend to focus more on specific genres they like. The vintage cabaret inspired black and white video makes it slightly better, because it gives it a musical theater context, but the song itself is pretty awful. Grating melody, especially the background choir, corny title and lyrics that don't make much sense.

There is a reason why he himself wasn't sure if he hated the song at first (as he said in interviews). And why it was his least streamed song from the album, his team just planned and shot the music video before that became clear. I think being raised with social media makes it hard for teen stars like Shawn and Bieber to take a break from the spotlight.
