Has anyone ever heard of them and were they popular?
The British singing group STEPS

They didn’t make much impact in the U.S. though I think they toured in support of Britney or *NSYNC in the late 90s or early 2000s. They’re cheesy pop fun and Lee is hot

Steps were hugely popular in the UK. Not cool, but popular.

They were huge here in the UK. Still very popular among gays of a certain age. Pretty much everyone alive here in the 90s can do the Tragedy dance moves.
The lead song off their new comeback album is really good and reminiscent of ABBA.

Claire ballooned after they split up, but she was able to lose most of the weight again

How old are they four of them look like they're in their thirties but the blond one looks older?

Do you mean the blond man? He's prematurely aged because he had twins by mail order surrogate and then he and his boyfriend split up and had a fight over custody for their range rover.

I guess trying to be an A-gay must really take its toll R8, is it true they all hate/hated each other?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 20, 2020 12:54 PM |
No, R9. The three least talented members hated Claire because she has a great voice and a diva attitude, and they hated H (the blond guy with a really high voice, who has always looked like a decrepit twink) because he was in a relationship with their manager, who promoted him above everybody else. Also, H is a bit of a social climber and managed to become friends with Britney Spears; when he thought that he was friends with an A-lister, he started treating the rest of the band as if they were beneath him.
Finally, the other three were resentful because when they were at the top of their career, Claire and H left the band behind thinking that they would be massively successful as a duo (which they clearly didn't achieve).
I like Steps' singles - they have always been catchy and very well written melodic pop in the line of ABBA. By the way, their recent albums are infinitely better than their early ones. Great pop songs without the unlistenable filler than ruined their first thre offerings.

I had never heard of them until reading about them on DataLounge. I’m obsessed now. After their bitter breakup that R10 documented, they had a reality show where they got back together and aired their old grievances.
That said, their first comeback record Tears on the Dancefloor is really fun pop with many great dance songs. And their newest album, What the Future Holds, is equally fun. Their music can put me into a good mood.
And each song sort of has a line dance that they do together.
I’m seriously thinking of going to England to see them in concert next year.

H & Claire really screwed the other three over.

Yes, OP - I adore them!

They were probably the campest band of the last quarter century. I couldn’t stand them, but then I don’t like much pop music anyway. They were pretty cloying.

God, we loved them as college students.. everytime I hear a Steps song I can literally taste vodka/redbull and smell CK One lol.
We had an older PhD student room with us one year who'd been to high school with Faye Tozer and we were so impressed. Btw - she was really nice apparently!

Love them - thanks to the original thread. Their version of Tragedy is tremendous. Never heard of them before.

the new album is fun and their singing has improved. I actually think Faye is a better singer. Claire just scream-sings and she's sharp on most notes. Lee is still hot. H looks like a fat-fit fag.

They've all tried their hand at reality tv with varying degrees of success.
Big Claire did Celebrity Big Brother and made it to the final where she came 4th out of 5th, and was on Pop Star to Opera Star.
H did Celebrity Big Brother alongside Shilpa Shetty and Jade Goody in what became the most infamous series of reality tv. He wasn't involved with the racist bullying of Shilpa but he didn't make any efforts to stop it either. He made it to the final and came 4th out of 6. And earlier this year he did Dancing On Ice, and like all homosexuals who wait until their career has dipped before coming out, he made a huge point of how he was fighting for LGBT equality by being paired with another homosexual. They came 7th out of 12.
Lisa did Totally Scott Lee and proved herself to be Britain's Valerie Cherish, she appeared on the second series of Dancing On Ice and was paired with Matt Evers (who wasn't openly gay then) and came 6th out of 11. She really scraped the barrel appearing on CelebAir, where celebrities to do job of cabin crew. She and her husband came joint 6th.
Lee managed to get all the gigs Lisa turned down, the pinnacle of which was I'm Famous And Frightened. where celebrities go into a haunted house.
Faye did the best, becoming the first Step on Strictly and finishing a runner up 2 years ago. Her showdance was spectacular. Big Claire must have eaten herself sick with envy.

So only the blonde with the giant mouth and the blond Twunk were assholes, good to know.

The blond guy's voice is so high pitched it sounds like another girl is singing.

They're no Sugababes.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 29, 2020 12:48 PM |
WOW, the blond is almost as old as me no wonder he looks so much rougher than the rest of them.

That dance at R18 was delightful!
Had no idea there was such backstage intrigue and rancor — very interesting! Here in the US, I only knew them from their “Tragedy” remake and the fact that I remember thinking Lee was a cutie!

Lee is cute but it seems like they rarely let him actually sing and H has that weird baby voice.
