Let’s talk Eggnog!

What brand is your favorite? Do you ever make it from scratch? Do you mix anything with it?

My favorite is called Broguiere’s. It’s only available in Southern California. It’s very thick and rich. Sometimes I cut it with milk, Brandy, or rum. For dessert sometimes I put a little vanilla ice cream in my eggnog. It’s wonderful!

Does anyone remember like 5 years back when people where losing their shit because they took Bordon Eggnog off the shelves? They ended up bringing it back. I've never had it

I've never had really good egg nogg. The store bought stuff is so bland, and unappetizing. My corner store, health food store, sells some natural, homemade like egg nogg. Might pick that up.

I love the 'nog! I always whip up some heavy cream to the point just before it starts to turn to butter, super thick, sweetened and with vanilla extract. Put a big dollop of that on top the the eggnog and it's heaven.

I like my whipped cream extra thick rather than light and fluffy, so I whip it longer than usual. Doing that helps to stabilize it so it won't weep. You can also stabilize your whipped cream to last even longer by using gelatin melted in a little water, or by simply including one pack of Jello Instant Pudding into 2 cups of heavy cream while you're whipping it. For eggnog I would use vanilla pudding mix.

No, Vodka is quite good in Eggnog. In fact there are recipes for eggnog martinis and other eggnog/vodka drinks.

I like eggnog heated in the microwave (not hot, about as warm as cocoa), then stir rum into it and sprinkle nutmeg on top. Don't heat it with the rum in it, in case the alcohol might catch fire.

This is a good pie recipe using egg nog. I prefer it in a graham cracker crust, which has more flavor and is also much easier than a pastry crust (easier still if you use a store-bought one, as I do).

I'm not seeing much eggnog in the stores this season, whereas in past years I would see it everywhere. It was kind of trendy a few seasons ago and maybe it's dying out.

I make it from scratch, from a recipe I got from the SFist website. It had a funny story attached, but that website is defunct and I had to find the same recipe elsewhere. I don't bother with the whipped egg whites and whipped cream on top, just fresh grated nutmeg.

It is so fuckin boozy and delicious. it can age for a year or even two and gets even better.

While I allow the homemade to age, I have been putting spiced rum in store egg nog, Organic Valley brand is very nice, not as thick and emulsifier intense as other store bought nog.

Southern Comfort (made by Hood, in the dairy case, no liquor) is probably the best tasting nog that you find in a regular supermarket.

Agree, r41. A few years ago, I was pretty shocked to read Martha Stewart's egg nog recipe. Think it had everything booze-wise. Bourbon, whisky, rum, etc etc. endless booze. Even two or three types of bourbon, it was practically 90% booze. But looked tasty.

I made it Martha's way (separate the eggs, whip up egg whites) prior to 1982, but the only liquor I used was brandy. I never bought egg nog at the store.

I have been enjoying Southern Comfort Eggnog (nod to R39), but I don't use alcohol in it. I don't drink.

Delicious, but very rich. As a diabetic, I can only have a small amount at a time.

When we lived in Chicago, we fell in love with the eggnog from Oberweiss Dairy in Wisconsin. They still sold it in the returnable glass milk bottles. You could also get old-fashioned home delivery by the milkman. We really miss it in So Fla.

I rarely have eggs around and frankly, a little egg nog goes a long way in terms of calories. Nothing wrong with buying packaged. Boiled custard appears to be the same thing, only "Southern".

I buy a store brand half gallon, and use it as coffee creamer until it's gone,.and then I'm done for the year. I typically prefer black coffee. But this time of year, I have a little extra. My mother made beautiful Eggnog from scratch, but only for New Year's Eve. Never for Christmas. I still don't know what that was about.

We also didn't put our Christmas tree up until Christmas Eve, because that's what they started doing when they first got married. Now? I have mine up from December first, to Epiphany (January 6th).

But I can't EVER have Eggnog with alcohol. Dairy-based cocktails...nnnnno. No. Absolutely not.

Hood eggnog with rum. I tried the more expensive Southern Comfort brand for Thankagiving and did not like it. There was an organic one I used to buy at Whole Foods, but too inconvenient to get to WF now. So, I just stick with the cheap brand that I like in the meantime.
