Let’s talk Eggnog!

What brand is your favorite? Do you ever make it from scratch? Do you mix anything with it?

My favorite is called Broguiere’s. It’s only available in Southern California. It’s very thick and rich. Sometimes I cut it with milk, Brandy, or rum. For dessert sometimes I put a little vanilla ice cream in my eggnog. It’s wonderful!

Does anyone remember like 5 years back when people where losing their shit because they took Bordon Eggnog off the shelves? They ended up bringing it back. I've never had it

It's nice around the holidays, but it's so rich that I find I can only drink a little.

by Anonymousreply 2December 4, 2020 6:14 PM

Delicious and no dairy

I've never had really good egg nogg. The store bought stuff is so bland, and unappetizing. My corner store, health food store, sells some natural, homemade like egg nogg. Might pick that up.

by Anonymousreply 4December 4, 2020 6:24 PM

Darigold old fashioned eggnog. With a helping of fireball and/or spiced rum.

by Anonymousreply 5December 4, 2020 6:31 PM

Where abouts do you live R4?

by Anonymousreply 6December 4, 2020 10:24 PM

I love the 'nog! I always whip up some heavy cream to the point just before it starts to turn to butter, super thick, sweetened and with vanilla extract. Put a big dollop of that on top the the eggnog and it's heaven.

by Anonymousreply 7December 4, 2020 10:49 PM

Egg is my favorite nog.

by Anonymousreply 8December 4, 2020 10:52 PM

R7 when you whip heavy whipping cream doesn’t turn into whipped cream? Or do you keep whipping it after that?

by Anonymousreply 9December 4, 2020 11:17 PM

I know what egg is but what the hell is nog?

by Anonymousreply 10December 4, 2020 11:43 PM

I had it once. That was enough.

by Anonymousreply 11December 4, 2020 11:50 PM

[quote] [R7] when you whip heavy whipping cream doesn’t turn into whipped cream? Or do you keep whipping it after that?

I like my whipped cream extra thick rather than light and fluffy, so I whip it longer than usual. Doing that helps to stabilize it so it won't weep. You can also stabilize your whipped cream to last even longer by using gelatin melted in a little water, or by simply including one pack of Jello Instant Pudding into 2 cups of heavy cream while you're whipping it. For eggnog I would use vanilla pudding mix.

I have some from Trader Joe’s but the only alcohol I have is vodka.

Would that be disgusting?

by Anonymousreply 13December 5, 2020 1:31 AM

Vanille ice cream...peaked whites...nutmeg and vanilla. Oh, and bourbon.

by Anonymousreply 14December 5, 2020 1:35 AM

More disappointing than disgusting.

Real men take their nog straight.

by Anonymousreply 15December 5, 2020 1:35 AM

No, Vodka is quite good in Eggnog. In fact there are recipes for eggnog martinis and other eggnog/vodka drinks.

by Anonymousreply 16December 5, 2020 1:37 AM

We discussed this a few weeks ago.

R17 that’s a totally different discussion than the one we’re having now. So STFU!

I tried Ronnybrook Farms . It was very good,

I like eggnog heated in the microwave (not hot, about as warm as cocoa), then stir rum into it and sprinkle nutmeg on top. Don't heat it with the rum in it, in case the alcohol might catch fire.

I wouldn't think so, just not very flavorful.

I think a good eggnog is tasty even without liquor.

by Anonymousreply 22December 9, 2020 12:01 AM

I drink the Mexican style eggnot Rompope with Rum.

by Anonymousreply 23December 9, 2020 12:14 AM

This is a good pie recipe using egg nog. I prefer it in a graham cracker crust, which has more flavor and is also much easier than a pastry crust (easier still if you use a store-bought one, as I do).

I’ll always love the Martha Stewart version:

Brandy

Rum

Whisky

Holy cow 🐮 is it good 😌

by Anonymousreply 29December 18, 2020 9:29 PM

I'm not seeing much eggnog in the stores this season, whereas in past years I would see it everywhere. It was kind of trendy a few seasons ago and maybe it's dying out.

by Anonymousreply 30December 18, 2020 9:40 PM

Gross! I'm repulsed by 2% milk, though. Just let me spike my tea with some Black Velvet Toasted Caramel whiskey.

I make it from scratch, from a recipe I got from the SFist website. It had a funny story attached, but that website is defunct and I had to find the same recipe elsewhere. I don't bother with the whipped egg whites and whipped cream on top, just fresh grated nutmeg.

It is so fuckin boozy and delicious. it can age for a year or even two and gets even better.

While I allow the homemade to age, I have been putting spiced rum in store egg nog, Organic Valley brand is very nice, not as thick and emulsifier intense as other store bought nog.

Southern Comfort (made by Hood, in the dairy case, no liquor) is probably the best tasting nog that you find in a regular supermarket.

by Anonymousreply 39December 18, 2020 11:43 PM

The laziness of people who use commercial products for something intended to be a holiday treat.

Good egg nog and other milk/cream-based punches are simple to make and faste better than anything one can buy.

God, the consumerists here.

by Anonymousreply 40December 18, 2020 11:48 PM

R37= not enough booze

by Anonymousreply 41December 19, 2020 12:22 AM

I make it from scratch. Alton Brown’s recipe from food network (I think). It’s very easy and delicious.

by Anonymousreply 42December 19, 2020 12:27 AM

1 EGG + 1 NOG + 1 PINT BACARDI = EGGNOG

by Anonymousreply 43December 19, 2020 4:43 PM

Agree, r41. A few years ago, I was pretty shocked to read Martha Stewart's egg nog recipe. Think it had everything booze-wise. Bourbon, whisky, rum, etc etc. endless booze. Even two or three types of bourbon, it was practically 90% booze. But looked tasty.

by Anonymousreply 44December 19, 2020 4:52 PM

I made it Martha's way (separate the eggs, whip up egg whites) prior to 1982, but the only liquor I used was brandy. I never bought egg nog at the store.

I have been enjoying Southern Comfort Eggnog (nod to R39), but I don't use alcohol in it. I don't drink.

Delicious, but very rich. As a diabetic, I can only have a small amount at a time.

When we lived in Chicago, we fell in love with the eggnog from Oberweiss Dairy in Wisconsin. They still sold it in the returnable glass milk bottles. You could also get old-fashioned home delivery by the milkman. We really miss it in So Fla.

by Anonymousreply 48December 19, 2020 10:23 PM

I rarely have eggs around and frankly, a little egg nog goes a long way in terms of calories. Nothing wrong with buying packaged. Boiled custard appears to be the same thing, only "Southern".

by Anonymousreply 49December 20, 2020 12:35 AM

R37 that recipe looks really good! I wish I had the patience to make it but I don’t.

by Anonymousreply 50December 22, 2020 9:36 AM

I buy a store brand half gallon, and use it as coffee creamer until it's gone,.and then I'm done for the year. I typically prefer black coffee. But this time of year, I have a little extra. My mother made beautiful Eggnog from scratch, but only for New Year's Eve. Never for Christmas. I still don't know what that was about.

We also didn't put our Christmas tree up until Christmas Eve, because that's what they started doing when they first got married. Now? I have mine up from December first, to Epiphany (January 6th).

But I can't EVER have Eggnog with alcohol. Dairy-based cocktails...nnnnno. No. Absolutely not.

by Anonymousreply 51December 22, 2020 9:51 AM

Does eggnog taste like custard?

by Anonymousreply 52December 22, 2020 9:56 AM

R52, I'm the guy who can't even tolerate 2% milk for all the fat in it. Now, imagine eggnog with all its heavy cream and whole milk. It's like swallowing liquid fat.

by Anonymousreply 53December 22, 2020 12:23 PM

I saw that episode of Martha Stewart where she made the eggnog. With all the creams and booze it must’ve been a thousand calories mug. Just don’t set near any lit candles.

by Anonymousreply 54December 22, 2020 2:04 PM

I just follow the joy of cooking recipe, it takes a long time but is delicious, and HORRENDOUSLY calorific

by Anonymousreply 55December 22, 2020 2:06 PM

Hood eggnog with rum. I tried the more expensive Southern Comfort brand for Thankagiving and did not like it. There was an organic one I used to buy at Whole Foods, but too inconvenient to get to WF now. So, I just stick with the cheap brand that I like in the meantime.

by Anonymousreply 57December 22, 2020 2:33 PM

Kroger low fat with the green label. Tastes like full fat egg nog. Delicious.

by Anonymousreply 58December 22, 2020 2:40 PM

I tried Target's "light" egg nog this year and it was still very heavy and rich.
