They Stayed Too Long
In the song “Human Nature,” Madonna famously asked “Did I stay too long?” I think we would all agree now that yes, she did, in fact, stay too long.
Which actors had the opportunity to leave a TV show on a high note but stuck around just long enough to see their characters ruined?
Which actors made one sequel too many in a franchise?
Which singers had amazing careers until the one album where they sold out?
Which athletes astounded you with triple axels before becoming overly made up crying messes who couldn’t even lace their skates properly on international television?
Did they stay too long? And, if so, when should they have left?

I’m gonna say Madonna should have hung it up after the “Music” album. She had that flop after that that nobody talks about, and then she had “Confessions” which was mildly successful, but I think the desperation started there.

Beyone's awards performances. It must be contractually obligated she gets 15 minutes per performance, which is 10 minutes too long.

Very few shows once they got past season 7 (on the old 26 or so shows/season schedule), but especially the later seasons of The Facts of Life, One Day at a Time, Coach, The Jeffersons, Night Court are hard to take.

Confessions wasn't "mildly" successful, it topped the album charts in a record number of countries. Same with "Hung Up". That would have been the best time to callit quits or get assasinated or die from a drug overdose. Think of all the nostalgia! Shelley Long is a shining example of the opposite. Cheers was never as good after she left - but was that because it lacked her, as is commonly said, or because she was the only one who realised it could not go on at the same level? Same is true of Larry David. He left Seinfeld when he'd said what he had to say. In neither case did the show jump the shark, but in both cases you can see the schism line.
To answer the question: Jared and Jensen. The showrunner always told them the story arc was five years, and he left at that point, but they chose to stretch it out a further TEN. The results speak for themselves.

Because people will pay an unholy fortune to see their old faves, and these guys have realized they're retirement age and a lot of them can't afford to retire.
And if you picked 2020 to fund your retirement through performing, well, it sucks to be you.

Paul McCartney.
He can't sing anymore. He sounds horrible. His voice is weak, wheezy and wobbly, and has been for the past decade. He refuses to drop the keys on his songs to make them a bit easier to sing, which is what most aging singers do. He uses his backup singers to cover for his weak voice.
If he wants to keep churning out mediocre albums, that's one thing. Production can hide a multitude of weaknesses. But he really should stop touring.
Don't get me wrong, he's earned the right to do what he wants, and if his fans want to shell out hundreds of dollars to watch him badly croak out the old hits, by all means, knock yourselves out. But it's pretty pathetic at this point.

Interesting thread, I'm reading a Rolling Stone article about Bill Withers "retiring" from music in 1985. It seems that musicians, actors, etc. very rarely leave the industry (or settle into a nice niche) at the appropriate time. Most hang around and embarrass themselves for far too long.

Toni Braxton - She was a good singer for an album and a half until her talent got swallowed up by her ego, spendthrift habits, breast implants and rapidly disappearing clothes. How many bankruptcies has this moron had already? She should have retired after the second album (and the first bankruptcy) and gone off to work as Oprah's admin assistant or something.

Margaret Thatcher. By 1989, she had won three general elections and been prime minister for ten years. Allegedly, her husband encouraged her to stand down at that point. If she had done so, she would have left office with her dignity intact. Instead, she stayed on and ended up being forced out by her own party the following year. And thank God she did, because that public humiliation was exactly the end she deserved.

R27 in 1995, I remember a friend said that would be the perfect time for Madonna to die. This was a year before EVITA/Lourde's birth and shortly after her comeback with BEDTIME STORIES after the SEX/EROTICA fiasco/backlash in '92. Madonna was pretty legendary by then, but he said that an early death, while she was still in her thirties/career prime and childless, would guarantee her mythical status like Marilyn Monroe.
