I only notice hot guy/ugly girl, because, being a gay man, my eyes are drawn to handsome men when I'm in crowded spaces. I only know one of those ugly guy/hot girl couples in real life, like you see in a sitcom or movies. And the wife isn't even hot, she's just decent looking. And the husband is ridiculously obese, like 500 lbs. Most of the time, couples are either evenly matched or the husband is better looking.

Only on DL are hot men marrying ugly women or old women. I’ve lived in 5 countries and visited 56 so far and have never seen more hot guy/ugly women couples than the reverse. The number of gorgeous women and amazingly pretty girls I see with utterly hideous men makes me want to cry. If I see a hot guy his partner is nearly always super young or equally attractive. I don't even think my experience necessarily corresponds to actual facts, as I already said I, as a gay man, have an attention span that is biased in favor of hot man. But everyone's attention is biased; only for the tiny minority of people who are 50/50 bisexuals it is not. So we don't know what objective reality is like. The commonly accepted idea that men are "almost always" uglier than the wife is driven by sitcoms and cartoons pushing some very unrealistic pairings, not by any scientific verification of the idea.

Obviously, fugly rich men with hot wives is more common simply because fugly rich men are more common.

But, excluding that, I've always assumed that when a really hot person is dating an average person, it's because the hot one is a basket case of insecurity and fear of being cheated on. The logic that seems to be used is that the average person is so in love because the hot person is out of their league that the hot one thinks (often incorrectly) that the average one won't cheat.

Is there really social cachet in having a hot man among the average woman? Women who don't have a good salary and don't live in some fancy city neighborhood? Maybe things have changed but making a woman economically dependent by having her stay home with a few kids has always been the go to way to make sure she never leaves no matter what she looks like. The idea that a woman's looks make her more or less likely likely to cheat sounds like men projecting their standards on women.
