The Betty Broderick case
In spite of murdering her husband and his new wife, Betty Broderick gets a lot of sympathy from the public. On the youtube clips of her Oprah interviews, the viewer comments are overwhelmingly supportive of Betty.
In the 80s and 90s, the term "Jennifer Syndrome" was used to describe the phenomenon of men approaching middle age and dumping their long-term wives for younger women. Though the wives had come of age during the period of women's lib, many of them had been raised with the goal of getting married and becoming mothers and housewives. When their husbands left them, these wives had no job skills, and it would be hard for them, as single mothers, to work full-time anyway.
When Betty's husband left her, it was particularly painful, since she had worked to put him through medical school and then law school. After he got the degrees, his career took off, they suddenly became wealthy, and they bought a huge house. Soon after, he dumped Betty for a much younger woman. This woman was now enjoying the spoils of Betty's labor.
Betty seemed emotionally unstable, but many argued that her psychological state was the result of her ex-husband's (and his new wife's) gaslighting of her. She had trouble finding a lawyer to take her divorce case because her ex-husband was friends with all the local lawyers and even had some professional influence over them.
What did you think of this case? The made-for-TV movie starring Meredith Baxter (who did an excellent job) can be watched in full on youtube.

People can be thoughtless and cruel. You still don't get to shoot them like Betty did.

Betty was a nutcase which i'm assuming Daniel was aware of when he dropped her and got with a newer model. Betty was a jealous bitch who would kill them again just to exact her revenge. If she couldn't keep her lifestyle and status then Daniel wasn't either.

Well, the best that can be said is she was under a lot of pressure.
As for the sidepiece/2nd wife, she didn’t deserve to die, morally... but realistically, she played a role in her own death. You can’t be surprised when things escalate after you’ve decided to have an affair (etc.) with a married man.

The most distressing thing was how much the new piece looked just like Betty.

[quote]R3 If Betty couldn't keep her lifestyle and status then Daniel wasn't either.
It was also the breakup of their family (the couple had 4 kids) that Betty was having to undergo.
Plus, she might have reacted the same way had he been a drugstore pharmacist in a small town she’d put through school. It wasn’t all about money or status.

I guess Betty is a Karen in today’s terms.

The book on the case is fascinating and points out that aside from the kids, everybody was an asshole. And dipshit Dan kept provoking Betty.

I enjoyed the recent miniseries starring Christian Slater. Seek it out, OP. You’ll love it!

Exactly how much money is a college degree and a more advanced degree worth? That was the question in divorce cases at the time. Should a wife be compensated for giving up her educational goals for her husband's?
Because Betty's husband had so much legal clout in the wealthy enclave in La Jolla experts around the country were condemning the settlement. Her 4 kids got a financially stressed out mom. Dad was able to lavish them with luxuries they didn't have earlier in his career. Women around the country could relate.
Worse Mrs Broderick had gained a lot of weight and her husband was extremely image conscious with his new found high media profile. Instead of hiring a nutritionist and an exercise coach he publicly belittled his wife. Then took up with a much younger, thin woman, sending Betty endless pictures to further humiliate her.
Mr Broderick was an unnecessarily cruel jerk but of course didn't deserve to die.

From what I hear the cunt he left her for would send her samples and advertisements for wrinkle cream and weight loss supplements in the mail.
I gotta go on YouTube and watch both of the MBB Betty Broderick TV movies later tonight.

Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I would argue that Dan Broderick did deserve to die. He was an absolute sadistic prick. He came from a horrible family and was always selfish and cold hearted, even as a young man. While I sympathize with Betty, she was an utter fool to have ever taken up with him. The ugly details of the marriage are shocking from the very start and everyone involved-family, friends, kids, etc.- is an asshole. Dan was actively trying to drive Betty to suicide or insanity, and Linda was complicit. It’s crazy that he could be alive right now, enjoying retirement and grandkids, but he went to his grave in the prime of his life, all because he refused to be decent to the mother of his children- children he very much wanted, by the way. He had to have a big Irish Catholic brood, and refused to use birth control. It was no case of Betty tying him down or trapping him- she had abortions on the sly because he kept knocking her up. He’d go off to school and leave her with multiple babies in a shitty apartment and no money. This was really not a case of a spoiled, pampered wife being greedy.

R12, I have never posted about Betty Broderick before. I just read up on her case after seeing her name mentioned a few times in the Susan Smith thread.
R14, since Susan Smith and Diane Downs each have an active DL thread now, I figured I'd create one for Betty Broderick, who's a more sympathetic person, since she didn't harm (physically) and kids.

Betty put Dan through medical school. Then, when he was done with medical school, she put him through law school. I would have put my foot down after medical school. Get out there and earn some money now, buddy.

Why'd he become a doctor and then want to go to law school?

I know two men who got both a JD (law degree) and an MD.
One guy: first went to medical school, practiced as a doctor, then went to law school. I don't think he ever really practiced law. Works as a doctor, though. Basically a good guy. Seemed normal to me.
Other guy: first got a PhD, then got a JD, then got an MD. This guy was kind of nuts, IMO. Now works as an MD.
I think Dan Broderick was practicing law when there was more money to be made as an attorney.

Who said it upthread? Everyone was a bit of an asshole in this case. It’s better that way.
Reminds me of the Chris Watts case (well, except for the innocent children): the victim didn’t deserve to DIE, but they were assholes who mistreated their killers.

The second movie is really great in the courtroom scene where the lawyer basically corners Broderick into admitting the shooting was just accidental.
Is the Chrisitan Slater version any good? What streaming service or network was it on?

Dan Broderick was a medical malpractice attorney. From what I understand he was a ruthless adversary. Doctors hated his guts. When not working to sue the hell out of doctors he behaved like an overgrown frat boy. He loved to get drunk and would do some kind of skit called "the alligator" or "the turtle" where he'd be lying on the floor flailing her arms and legs around. It was supposed to be funny. His adoring office girl/playmate thought his antics hilarious.
Linda Kolkena was very hot to trot. She originally had worked as a flight attendant but was barely off her six month probationary period when she was fired for conduct unbecoming to the airlines. While off duty she and some of her dipshit girlfriends were on a plane partying when Linda became VERY cozy with a male passenger, sitting on his lap, kissing him and eventually going into the plane's toilet with him to fuck him. Of course she had excuses for all of that, but was fired nonetheless. I'm not surprised she and Dan hooked up. They were both very slimy individuals.

Isn't that what Betty wanted everybody to believe? That it was an accident? I don't think Betty had to be "cornered" into saying that shooting Dan and new wife was "accidental." That was her entire defense.

oops sorry r26 I phrased that wrong. You are right.
I meant admitting the shooting was NOT just accidental.
Betty keeps saying the gun just went off. The lawyer points out you shot this way, then moved and shot this way then did it again this way. THE GUN JUST DIDN'T GO OFF!

I believe Betty's story that she went over there with a gun to "make them listen to me!" She'd reached the end of her rope; her thought processes were totally irrational. I think what she said happened really happened: she entered the room, Linda screamed "Call the police!", Dan lunged for the phone and in a blind panic she fired the gun five times. I believe her story.
I think she should be out of prison. As her son Rhett said "the only people who would be in danger if she got out are dead."

She ripped the phone out of the wall and took it out of the room so they couldn't crawl to it for help. Cold hearted murder.
Plus she hasn't been a model prisoner so her paroles don't get approved.

R28: Med school & law school graduates aren't that rare; many large universities offer joint MD/JD programs, now. I know an MD, JD personally. She first went to medical school, hung a shingle as a single-provider family medicine physician for 15 years and then, after she tired of all the bureaucracy, red tape and stress of medicine, she went to law school. Now she practices disability law, so while her M.D. gives her unique qualifications and experience in choosing clients to represent in front of disability ALJs for their appeal hearings, she no longer otherwise utilizes her M.D. in any professional capacity and allowed her Pennsylvania state "Medical Physician & Surgeon" licensure to completely expire 20 years ago. She's done with medicine entirely and told me she doesn't regret it for a second.

R10, Betty didn't gain weight until after he left. He called her "old, fat, and ugly" when she was in her 30s and slender. She lost more weight and had plastic surgery (I think a forehead lift) to salvage her marriage.
After her left, she got heavy and started acting out, especially when he moved the girlfriend into his new home. She dumped the kids on him one by one, tried every bit of acting out she could to "wake him up".
When all was said and done, if the controlling asshole had paid her off, he would still be alive with wife four or five.

Meh, murder is wrong but Dan and Linda had it coming. If you continually poke at the bear it will swipe back.
Betty's rage was understandable, if not condonable. But why was Dan so cruel? He just kept picking at her incessantly, the mother of his children. He relished in her suffering.
