My pick is Lloyd Haynes. Manly and rugged. A beautiful example of handsomeness.

James Franciscus, television and film actor from the late 1950s through the 1980s.
Best known for playing the title role as a high school teacher in NBC's dramatic series, "Mr. Novak," 1963-1965. Damn he was handsome. Also know for the ABC television series, "Longstreet" in 1971.
Franciscus died of emphysema in 1991 at the age of 57.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 26, 2020 8:14 AM |
James Franciscus' landmark series "Mr. Novak:"
The series showcased many popular actors of the time including Martin Landau, Walter Koenig, Beau Bridges, Tony Dow, Ed Asner, June Lockhart, Sherry Jackson, and many others. This trendsetting show was the first to depict both teachers and students in a dramatic and realistic manner and was very influential on the educational community. Many cutting-edge themes were showcased including racial discrimination, cheating on exams, anti-Semitism, alcoholism, dropouts, drug abuse and political extremism. In its two-year run, the program won over 47 awards from various educational institutions including the National Education Association and was the recipient of a prestigious Peabody Award for excellence.

Television had hotter actors than the movies. Richard Chamberlain looks like Ben Affleck in r11.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 26, 2020 8:29 AM |
R17 thru R20 Reminds me that James Franciscus was actually the producer's first choice to play Dr. Kildare.
[quote] E. Jack Neuman, who developed the show for TV, had decided Franciscus was perfect for the role. Sagal, slated to direct the pilot, agreed. Studio brass concurred. There was one hitch. The pilot had to roll immediately in order to be ready for the next selling season - and Franciscus was riding out the final period of an option that committed him to another series, 'Band of Gold,' which found a sponsor but no network time slot.
[quote] "I loved the Kildare story, and the script was one of the finest ever written, but I'm one of those people who believe things have a way of working out for the best," Franciscus says now minimizing his disappointment. Yet he still counts the exact margin by which he missed the coveted role."My Band of Gold' option had just 17 days to go," he recalls.

For those Robert Urich fans - I won't start a whole thread on this, but I watched a couple of seasons of "Vegas" and made way too many caps of him (like 50). So here they are in an album, if you like him and have some time on your hands. A few shirtless, mostly butt shots, although I'm not crazy about the style of the jeans he wore.

Interesting about Tom Selleck!, r102!
As sexy as he was in the1980s on Magnum and in a few movies, he's aged into such a humorless old grouch it's very hard to see any sexuality at all there any more. I would imagine anyone here too young to remember him early in his career and only know him from those awful insurance commercials and Bluebloods would be shocked to think he was ever considered a hottie.

robert conrad unfortunately aged not very well due to drinking and tanning..
everyone raves about his ass in the wild wild west show and those pants, however, i actually prefer his ass a decade later in the mid 70's when he did "black sheep squadron"!! his ass was bigger, more manly and the way he filled out those spray painted on khaki pants defies nature!..
it's one thing to show off that ass in "stretchy form fitting "pants like he wore in the wild wild west, it's a whole another thing to show off that ass in thicker rigid material like khakis and wear them so tight that they look spray painted on and you could see his underwear "panty lines" in them!..... WOW!..
and yes, more handsome men in TV than in movies... (we haven't even touched the handsomest men in soap operas yet! like shawn christian and paul telfer)...

Lots of great choices on here, starting with OP's. We all have our own types. For me, Tom Selleck was my ideal man. He was so handsome. My first partner resembled him a lot, right down to the hairy chest and mustache. I also liked Burt Reynolds--dark, hairy chest, later on the mustache. Burt did a lot of TV before hitting it big in the movies. Jon Amos used to make me quiver when I was a young gayling. Also loved James Garner.
In the handsome face category, even though they're not my types, Richard Chamberlain was beautiful. I think Matt Bomer verges on being pretty. Jon Erik Hexum had face for days. I've always also thought that Kyle Chandler is a truly handsome man.

I went to college with Mark Shera at Boston U. where he was still known as Mark Shapiro. He was adorably straight back then (early 1970s) and couldn't get cast in anything except for the lead in a new play written by fellow student Danny Lipman (who eventually went on to create the US Queer as Folk).

A google search of “Mark Shera today” yielded a few pics of older men, but I don’t think any are actually him.

James Franciscus as "Mr. Novak" in the 1960s is still the most stunning man ever on television. I prefer a man with darker good looks, but blond Franciscus was just so unbelievably gorgeous. High school dramas in the '60s were the best.

I was only about 13 when Dr. Kildare first came on TV but the medical plots didn't interest me too much. And unlike Westerns, I figured they'd never find a place for Kildare to take off his shirt (until the fabulous 2 parter "Tyger, Tyger" where the good doctor went surfing with doomed Yvette Mimieux). But OMG all the girls in junior high were wild for him and regularly wore Dr. Kildare "blouses" to school. By far the biggest teen sensation of my childhood until The Beatles a few years later.
But I much preferred Mr. Novak, adored James Franciscus (he had a much earthier presence than Chamberlain), and I loved the plots of each episode. I remember it as a very respectable intelligent series. I wonder if it would still hold up? I must look for it on youtube.

I've always had the impression, going back to the original airing of Rout 66, that George Maharis was very rebellious, wouldn'ot put up with publicity nonsense and might even have come out as gay if the times were different. His career never really went any where after he left Route 66. I think Hollywood had no patience for him.

George Maharis had multiple wigs that he would rotate throughout the month, to give the impression that his hair grew (and then had been cut).
by Anonymous | reply 220 | November 29, 2020 8:14 AM |
R220, I went bald very young (19) and after seeing how a hairpiece completely changed a friend’s disposition, did the same.
I had many dark, light, and highlighted units- wavy. etc but always defaulted to a blonde tipped, surfer dude style because it blended right in with my own. I’d slick a soupy Aveda gel through it, then let it dry and I had a few that literally looked like the hair was growing out of my head. The trick is to have a master stylist cut it into your own hair with a razor, not too thick and shatter any weight. I’d throw them out after six months because no matter how you care for them the hair oxidizes or sheds and becomes detectable.
I even had a platinum one once and wore it to a circuit party, then a week later put a dark root in so it looked like it was growing out. Mary!

Michael Billington who very nearly became James Bond in "Live and Let Die", he would have appeared with Jane Seymour who he was acting with in "The Onedin Line" at the time, as seafarer Daniel Fogarty (pictured).
[quote] He was screen-tested for the role of James Bond more than any other actor, and was said to have been Albert R. Broccoli's first choice had Roger Moore not been available (see: 1981's For Your Eyes Only). Billington did a photo shoot for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and met the film's director Peter Hunt.[1] He was also screen-tested for Live and Let Die (1973), Moonraker (1979) and Octopussy (1983). He ultimately appeared in 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me, playing Sergei Barsov, Agent XXX's ill-fated lover, at the start of the film.

That older photo of Guy Madison posted above at r225 doesn't even look like the same man who created "beefcake" in the 1940s. By the time Guy was doing Wild Bill Hickok he'd really lost it. He was gorgeous in Since You Went Away and Till the End of Time, Henry Willson's first big "discovery."
by Anonymous | reply 239 | November 29, 2020 2:18 PM |
R238.. i once did a google search on actor robert horton gay and saw (was it the same theatre thing you did?) that some reviewer wrote about the play he was in on broadway, writing gay actor robert horton so on and so on... it wasn't a review actually it was just his personal comments and thoughts years and years later on the play...allegedly, horton and co-star Ward Bond did not get along as Bond was a complete super right wing republican and horton was the opposite... supposedly, horton also found out that Bond just to piss Horton off, would spread rumors on the set that Horton was gay... how Bond would know who knows?...
Horton was married 3 times, but had no children... my gaydar on him as he's one of my western hunk favorites (clint walker, denny miller, doug mcclure included) doesn't see or get any gay vibe from him... he seemed to be very masculine confident and sexy straight acting to me, then again, he did love musical theater and singing and they were his true career loves?

Dennis Cole was a frequent guest star on all the usual cop and detective shows when I was growing up in the 70's. He was one of those guys you saw everywhere but didn't know his name, at least not until he briefly became Mr. Jaclyn Smith.
He wasn't really my type, but he did have those classic handsome, matinee-idol type looks you couldn't help but notice.
Apparently he did star in a few short-lived series in the 60's, and he was a regular on a daytime soap later on.

Here ya go, R291.
I remember him as you do, with the blond hair, but when I was looking at all the photos, I just didn't think he looked as good with the longer 70's hair.
I gotta say, the guy's good looks held up well into his 50s, but then he hit the wall hard. He died in '09.
One thing I found interesting and sad about him was that his son was killed at age 30 in a home invasion robbery in Venice (California), in which his son's friend, punk legend Henry Rollins, survived. The killers have never been caught.

Beautiful boy trio #1: Life as We Knew It starring Sean Faris (touted as TV’s Tom Cruise) Chris Lowell and Jon Foster. All would also star on other shows as well, with Foster and Lowell being stronger on other ones, but this is where Sean really shone bright.

Beautiful boy trio #2: Enlisted starring again Chris Lowell, Geoff Stults and Parker Young who had hands down one of the most phenomenal bodies on TV. Probably Geoff’s best work as a caring, but exasperated brother looking out for his siblings and in daddy bear mode with an in shape daddy bear body. There were many shirtless scenes and some weirdly homoerotic even though they play brothers.

I mentioned Johnny Depp and Jason Priestley, above. I admit this guy aged better than they did. He's handsome but doesn't have the kind of features I like. If I had to pick an older actor I'm attracted to it would be Stewart Granger, but he was in the movies.

R510 - I saw him once filming an episode of NYPD Blue in NYC, right where Sixth and Fifth Avenues split and go in different directions, around 25th Street. He was wearing that dusky trademark Armani coat, and I'm telling you he was drop-dead handsome, about 6'2", broad-shouldered, and his skin colour had a faint, intriguing hint of violet or mauve under it that people of mixed colour sometimes have. He was simply gorgeous. I was stunned, because usually stars look Less Than when you see them in the flesh. Smits was More Than. Television didn't do justice to him.
No love? Bitch, please: if he showed up as a blind date you'd be on your knees before the door closed behind him.

Fifth and Sixth Avenues never intersect, so they never "split." They run parallel to each other. I think you're talking about 5th Avenue and Broadway, which intersect between 23rd and 25th, at Madison Square Park.

Speaking of seeing actors in person, I once saw Timothy Daly in the flesh in Williamstown, MA, hanging around outside the theater (where one of his cast mates from Wings was performing). LOVED Pernell Roberts!!! So sexy in those black western shirts with his dark chest hair curling out of his shirt collar. I loved him years later as Trapper John, too....handsome daddy bear.

I've worked with Jimmy Smits a couple of times and agree, he's so much handsomer and striking in person. Beautiful cocoa skin. And a really nice guy.
by Anonymous | reply 532 | December 6, 2020 2:48 AM |
.R526 Yes I think that was what was so amazing was that he had great skin, that made him look really good. He was there with a blonde, and some blond girls that I assume were his kids. The kids wearing white. They all looked unreal. But the funny thing was on TV or in Diner, or whatever, I never found him all that handsome, I thought he was "generic handsome" and it didn't register as anything.

I must be older than all of you because I have dreamy memories of Gary Lockwood from an early 60s TV series called Follow the Sun in which he and the very handsome Barry Coe and Brett Halsey played some sort of vagabond adventurers that would take them to exotic locations weekly to show off Gary's hot bod in swim trunks. This was one of those typical series of the times with a triumvirate of sexy young guys like 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, Bourbon Street Beat and Surfside Six.
Speaking of Surfside Six, has VAN WILLIAMS been mentioned yet?
by Anonymous | reply 534 | December 6, 2020 2:54 AM |
To me Gary Lockwood was the most handsome guy in the 1960s. And sexy as hell. The Lieutenant, Follow The Sun, The Model Shop, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | December 6, 2020 3:13 AM |
Gary was also married to Jennifer Hart herself, Stefanie Powers, for a time.

George Reeves?
by Anonymous | reply 539 | December 6, 2020 3:27 AM |
One more (I think) interesting career note about Gary Lockwood: he appeared as a killer on almost every season of "Barnaby Jones." If not for the fact he was playing a different character each time, you would've sworn he was a semi-regular he was on there so often.

I met Gary Lockwood, when he worked with my father inn the late '70s. Professional, even-keeled, solid-performer and a genuinely nice guy.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | December 6, 2020 4:06 AM |
I was surprised he was married to Stephanie Powers.... she became a much bigger tv star than he so I wonder if that doomed their marriage. I saw him on tv a lot in the 1960s but he seemed to disappear in the 70s. He must have been a real ladies man though, his girlfriend before Powers was Tuesday Weld and soon after he left Powers, he got another woman pregnant.

r548 I remember him from Joan Cusack's sitcom "What About Joan." I thought he was awfully cute.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | December 6, 2020 11:23 AM |
Yes R534. Van Williams was mentioned upthread. But he deserves another pic. There was no one could touch him in those days. He gave up his acting career and made a fortune in the corporate sector. Said he didn't care for the "games" one had to play in showbiz, which I imagine had to do with fending off the casting couch creatures. Sadly for my fantasy, he was straight.

Mike Henry was one of the most beautiful men who played Tarzan. Some remember him as Jackie Gleason's idiot son in Smokey and the Bandit. Lord, he was gorgeous!

One of Mike Henry's more interesting photos. Whatcha got under there Tarzan?

Ross Thomas did movies and television. He had a recurring role on General Hospital as 'Brandon,' a hardened criminal just released from jail. Thomas has also appeared on NCIS, Lie to Me, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, Cold Case, & Living with Fran.

R524 - I was visiting, admittedly, but that shot isn't where I saw Smits. Don't Fifth and Sixth switch places at some point, near the Flatiron Building? There is, or was, an island right in the middle which is where they were filming. Not a native New Yorker, so will take your word for it, but it's a spot where visitors often get confused - I took the bus downtown and was looking for a place called, let me think, "City Crab"?
And it occurs to me that as the poster who mentioned the god-like Clint Walker, I didn't put up a photo . . . the one someone else put up is grainy . . .
And have we all forgotten the toothsome young Clint Eastwood (speaking of Clints) in "Rawhide"?
by Anonymous | reply 556 | December 6, 2020 1:26 PM |
R524 - I was visiting, true, not a native New Yorker, but don't Fifth and Sixth sort of switch places just above the Flatiron Building? There is (or was) a large island in the middle of the intersection and that's where they were filming. I was amongst others navigating heavy traffic to stand at the edges of the island and look at Smits. I took the bus downtown from midtown by the 42nd St. Library, the area where I got off I was supposed to meet a friend at someplace called, I think, "City Crab"?
Whatever, it was in that area. I note that as the poster who first mentioned Clint Walker, I did not attach a photo. Here it is.
And, no one has mentioned the very toothsome other young Western Clint - Eastwood, in "Rawhide".
by Anonymous | reply 557 | December 6, 2020 1:31 PM |
Young "Rawhide" Eastwood.
He looks a bit like Hugh Laurie.

R556, click on the link to see the map of Manhattan around the area you're describing.
I'm not familiar with City Crab, but there was once apparently a place called City Crab Shack on E. 16th between Fifth and Union Square West. Fourth Avenue and Broadway kind of agglomerate at the southeast corner of Union Square. Maybe that's what you're thinking of. In either case, Union Square is only six blocks southeast of Madison Square, as you walk along Broadway.
Fifth and Sixth don't intersect, however. They remain parallel at every point in their shared 50+ blocks. See the map.

SPEAKING OF MIKE HENRY, AND HIS 3 TARZAN MOVIES... well, the movies DID play on tv, so i guess that would make him in "tv history"?...
ALL I KNOW IS the most muscular and ripped tarzan ever who wore the smallest loincloth ever of any tarzan... i have all 3 movies on dvd and trust me they have been used countless, countless times for right arm workouts! laugh!....(2nd favorite tarzan would be 50's bodybuilder hunk gordon scott!)...
speaking of tv, has anyone mentioned REB BROWN OR CAL BOLDER YET?....
and CLINT WALKER was THEE M-A-N!....
by Anonymous | reply 561 | December 6, 2020 1:53 PM |
R560 - You're right, that's it! I was remembering too far up, that's it exactly! Well, it was the early 1990s and my memory isn't what it was, but that's the place and area, exactly. That area once you get out of midtown can be confusing for visitors. Thanks.

James Marsden on Modern Family & Ally McBeal (also sang so bonus points). Matt Bomer on White Collar. Tyler Hoechlin on Teen Wolf.

So no one is going to mention John Travolta? He starred as Vinnie in Welcome Back, Kotter. As a young stud, he was pretty hot and after Staying Alive, his career exploded like a SuperNova in the 70s.

What about the sitcom kids who grew into hot young studs? Tony Dow, Don Grady.....um..... Paul Petersen?
And Richard Crenna who was adorable as teenage high school student Walter Denton on Our Miss Brooks, quite sexy as farmer Luke McCoy on The Real McCoys and later on as any number of hot daddy types?
And speaking of Our Miss Brooks, what about Robert Rockwell as Philip Boynton, the shy but very handsome biology teacher Connie Brooks was always trying to fuck?

Richard Crenna was in his 20s when he was on "Our Miss Brooks."
