by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 26, 2020 7:39 AM |
Let’s be very clear about this.
R36, Loren and his girlfriend are very specific in their videos. Loren does NOT have a penis or testicles and the doctors were able to save nothing at all. Loren and Sabia are even clear that they would like to have their own biological children one day but that Loren has no genitals and there was not the chance for any of his sperm to be saved.
To be totally clear, Loren’a body ends at his belly button and he has no penis, no testicles, no prostate, no anus or rectum, and no pelvis. Period. (He also lost his lower right arm). Urine is removed from his body by dual nephrostomies (tubes draining his kidneys) and feces is removed via a visible colostomy bag.
Without a plastic bucket prosthesis, Loren is not able to sit upright as he has no buttocks. With a bucket prosthesis, which extends up to his chest and armpits, he is able to sit upright with his torso effectively suspended in mid air.
Loren is totally naked in some videos and there is no need to blur anything as he has literally no genitals at all, and is technically a “nullo” sexually: He can never again masturbate or have an orgasm, even anally as he has no anus or prostate, and he will be testosterone hormone replacement therapy for the rest of his life as his body produces zero testosterone. Effectively he is an entirely asexual being.
Loren’s body is amputated above where he would have any pubic hair, but the front part of his skin is folded under the end of his body, which they call his “bulb” and there is some slight pubic hair visible on the very bottom of his bulb, but he also has no chest hair nor any armpit hair. However he can grow wispy facial hair due to the HRT.

He has a gf who doesn’t understand the full extent of what the rest of his life will be like because they’re still in the acute rehab phase. But one day all the Drs, nurses, therapists & aides will be gone and that’s when the rest of his life kicks in. That’s when she realizes she has to take care of him herself. All their friends and family will be working & the only ones who will hang around are the losers who can’t get work & the drug users, who are takers, not givers. He’ll be in and out of hospitals with infections. He’ll wake her up at night because he has a fever, the chills, etc. She won’t be able to hold a job so she’ll take a course to be a home health aide & she’ll be paid a pittance.
If she’s got a martyr complex, she’ll stay. If she’s not a martyr/victim, she’ll see some guy walking around her local Walmart one day and wonder what it would be like if.......
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 28, 2020 6:36 PM |
I hope you're wrong, R68, but I suspect that's pretty much what will happen. My heart aches for this young man.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 28, 2020 7:56 PM |
I think so too. There is a honeymoon period in families and relationships when someone survives an accident or health crisis but when the reality of everyday life sets in and the care taking has to start people scatter/ She's so young she can't imagine what's in store. That said if this happened to a girl the chance of her getting a cute young boyfriend would be zero so at least this kid will get to have romance in his life whether it's for the long haul or not.
This is just incredible sad though. I grew up with men allowing their 12 year old sons to drive heavy machinery and always dreading something like this happening. We did lose two young brothers when they were allowed to stand up on the back of dad's tractor driving along a main road. Someone overtook dad on a bend, a came came towards him, he swerved into the lane in front of the tractor, tractor braked and kids went flying. Didn't knock any sense into the local men though and letting male kids risk their lives continued.
I hope this guy can have some quality of life long term.

Well, that girlfriend is eventually going to leave him. She's young and has her life ahead of her, she will get tired of wiping his ass or in this case changing his shit bags. So I wonder how he will deal with that. Probably the only time he will have someone to be around. Older woman don't take charity cases when it comes to men. Not without money and a full time nurse.

I think R94 is unfortunately right that he won't have to worry about older women decades down the line. Any significant amputation puts extra stress on the body and shortens lifespan, but losing over half your body mass... I've never actually heard of someone surviving this extreme an amputation before.

It's interesting to note that Johnny Eck, star of Todd Browning's early movie, "Freaks," was in a similar situation, but he was born with no lower body. If I remember correctly, he had a twin brother who was "normal." To quote Wikipedia:
"John Eckhardt Jr, (August 27, 1911 – January 5, 1991) professionally billed as Johnny Eck was an American freak show performer in sideshows and a film actor. Born without the lower half of his torso, Eck is best known today for his role in Tod Browning's 1932 cult classic film Freaks and his appearances as a bird creature in several Tarzan films. He was often billed as "The Amazing Half-Boy", "King of the Freaks" and "The Most Remarkable Man Alive". Besides being a sideshow performer and actor, the multi-talented Eck was also an artist, musician, photographer, illusionist, penny arcade owner, Punch and Judy operator, and expert model-maker."

Can he pwonounce adowable bwanket?
by Anonymous | reply 105 | November 30, 2020 12:58 PM |
Johnny Eck had sacral agenesis, a condition by which the lower body is not fully formed. Most people we see who are “missing their lower half” have sacral agenesis, with their tiny useless legs amputated as children and with genitals and bowel and bladder up higher under their torso but extant; even is smaller, underdeveloped, and not totally working properly. Think of Kenny Easterday and, more recently, Doug Forbis. While life expectancy can be affected, it may not be, as Johnny Eck lived to be 80. People with sacral agenesis can often sit upright on their lowest part and can often walk seamlessly on their hands. Loren can do neither, requiring a hard plastic bucket to sit upright and unable to walk on his hands as his right arm was also amputated above the elbow.
Loren Schauers’s situation is very different, His lower half, with his legs and genitals and bowel and bladder all fully formed and functional, was amputated after an accident. As result, he has double nephrostomies to drain his urine and a colostomy to empty his feces. This is not only quite labor intensive, as another poster said, he is extremely vulnerable to infections, one of which is likely to kill him at a young age.
Loren is very open on his social media that he does NOT suffer from PTSD, which seemly very unlikely, but also that he is working through lots of mechanisms to reduce what must be unbearable pain, including marijuana. Who knows what other drugs he does or is prescribed?
There MUST be some mental trauma associated with losing your lower half, including all bowel and bladder system AND total loss of all genitals at 18. Loren knows he will never orgasm or produce semen again at age 18 (he is on HRT for testosterone) and can never even attempt to masturbate as he has nothing to masturbate. He has no anus or prostate to stimulate either. That MUST cause some sort of mental trauma.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | November 30, 2020 2:15 PM |
I don't think it was right for the paramedics to save him. What kind of life will he have for the next 5-10 years, and then he'll just die of massive infection anyway. Better to let him go than suffer all that.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | November 30, 2020 3:24 PM |

That construction company is in big trouble then. Sorry to sound reverse-ageist, but most 18-year-old boys can barely operate a car without getting into some type of trouble (tickets/speeding/accidents). That's why their insurance is so high. Nevermind a forklift..

by Anonymous | reply 116 | November 30, 2020 6:13 PM |
Why would they let a kid drive a forklift? 18 is still a child. Young teen boys have testosterone and poor impulse control which results in reckless behavior. It's not his fault because he didn't have experience or certification to be operating a forklift and the adults around him should not have allowed him to do this unsupervised. I looked up the state and it's Montana which makes a lot of sense to me. The working-class blue-collar areas tend to put kids to work at a young age doing dangerous stuff.

R117 as a guy who was once 17 years old and working in construction I can tell you that the older guys rarely wanted to do the dangerous work. The shit dangerous work was always given to the youngest workers because the older guys were too afraid to do the dangerous work. It usually involved ridicule and calling into questioning a guy's manhood if he refused a dangerous job. It was all cowardly self preservation on the part of the old men.

R44/R68/R100 an able-bodied girl with whom I went to school and was temporarily friends is now married as a grown woman to a wheelchair bound man with severe CP and attendant limitations. Having lost touch with her after graduation, I don't know any details of their relationship or how it works.
Knowing her past, though, I can speculate that she has a veritable complex of reasons, and that a few of those reasons are possibly not altruistic. From age 12 to age 18 I observed that she had severe control issues, manifesting as near-fatal anorexia (she ended up in the hospital weighing 50lbs, a few times) and obsessive behaviours (she ended up stalking me as well as others, and almost sexually assaulting me at a sleepover which was the nail in the coffin of that friendship) as well as pathological lying and verbally/physically abusing her own mother. Despite this, she has always been very caring and attentive to domesticated animals and to disabled or challenged people, volunteering so much free time to their care; presumably this is because she knows that she can control them and that they have to obey her to survive.
So I wonder whether her husband is entirely safe, though weighing up his options perhaps he's still better off with her than without. But it's not for me to judge one way or the other, not knowing either of them as adults - I only know what I saw and experienced all those years ago.

Would he get a half price funeral?

I think I'd choose to live as he did. He didn't seem to suffer any head trauma, so he has his normal brain function, his eyesight, and no difficulty communicating. In this age of computers and internet, limits to his physical activity and mobility aren't going to be as restrictive as they would have in ages past. Experientially he's probably in about the same boat as someone paralyzed from the waist down, though the actual absence of his lower body is going to have more extreme medical consequences than paralysis would.
