Yes! Yes! The reviews for Netflix’s Hillbilly Elegy are as awful as you’d hoped they be!

The problem is, when actors who have lived priveleged lives for decades go on to play lower class people, it ALWAYS comes across as offensive charicature.

Richard Lawson in Vanity Fair on Glenn’s performance:
I can’t really find much good to say about Close’s performance, except that when the film shows pictures of the real Mamaw during the closing credits, you realize that they did do a pretty good job of turning Close into a lookalike. Otherwise, Close’s work in the film is almost an obscenity, a patrician actor doing the hoariest of brassy-old-lady drag. It’s a kind of mugging that has no place in an age when audiences have become much better attuned to Hollywood falseness than they once were. Every note of Close’s performance is a glaring actor choice, all grim calculation masked as empathy.

Fuck. They’re burning poor G alive on this one.
Also, “poor” kids who end up at elite universities on full scholarships, are usually far more sophisticated than their wealthy peers, and are able to adapt in ways that their elite peers do not, and have never been required to
They’re not at a loss nor are they at a deficit going in, nor do they ever actually think they really are, which is why they got in there on the first place.
These kids are highly unusual and different t, but in ways that everyone else can not grasp or understand, especially when they rise above and become the first half who’re-half black POTUS. M
They’re usually pretty fucking brilliant, & aren’t playing by the same rules others are, which is why they can succeed at pretty much anything they choose to, or not. Success to them is not defined or explained as the way capitalism defines it. Even if they were to end up working class themselves, after graduating from these elite institutions,, they are not comparing themselves to their wealthy peers, as they just do not see success as most people who are les educated , or who hail from wealthy legacies, become highly educated, yet are morally bankrupt.
👆🏽That’s 👆🏽what makes them outsiders -& what makes the story ring untrue, not their “Hillbilly” roots.
LOL.

[quote] It’s not that actors can’t play characters who have lived very different lives from them — especially two actors as versatile as Adams and Close. But their performances here feel bizarrely theatrical, as if they had to wind themselves up to Perform, with a capital P, as strange creatures they’ve never encountered before. They’re not humanizing portrayals . . . .
Leave Glenn alone! She’s doing the best she can, considering her . . . limitations.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 10, 2020 4:56 PM |
Vox uses Glenn's own words in a Q&A session to reveal the problem with her performance-
[quote] What might have solidified the movie’s failure for me was a comment Close made during that same Q&A, when she described the character of Mamaw as not all that different from other characters she’d played in “full drag,” such as Cruella de Vil, Norma Desmond, or Albert Nobbs — all larger-than-life caricatures of one kind or another. In this case, her costume was glasses, a cigarette, a big T-shirt, and layers of prosthetics intended, she said, to keep you from thinking about her as Glenn Close and allow you to just think about Mamaw.
[quote] But here is the thing: Mamaw is not like Cruella de Vil or Albert Nobbs. She has a thick accent and some tip-top zingers that she hurls at misbehaving children, to be sure. So does my grandmother. Mamaw is a recognizable grandma. She isn’t a curiosity or an icon; she is a regular American lady.

I heavily rooted for Close in “The Wife” a few years back - she was sublime - but I’m not sure this one is going to do it for her. It’s one of those try-to-hard projects that tend to turn people off.

I’ve never disliked a performance of hers, but I’ve never been all that impressed by her either. She’s competent but rarely inspired, and struggles to put a personalizing stamp on the roles she plays—the recasting possibilities for her parts are endless.
She is also kind of plain and can easily look frumpy. Not sure why she tends to generate such excitement in the industry with her frequent Oscar nominations and seemingly endless supply of high profile projects.

r107 perfectly encapsulates my feelings about Amy Adams as well. Just completely vanilla and unmoving, but not altogether terrible.
The other Amy Adams project, 'The Woman in the Window', that was supposed to come out last year, tested so poorly with audiences, they had to go back and do reshoots. Still not sure when that film is supposed to be released. She clearly needs some sort of hit or well-received role as a palette cleanser from her mediocre output as of late. It seems like the Academy really wants to give her an award, but they're still waiting for the right project to justify it.

He worked for the state department and always was very well groomed and put together. He looked like William Powell. Things must have really gone downhill in the heartland.

Meryl doesn't have a Tony because it doesn't interest her. If she wanted one, she'd have one at this point. She doesn't have to go to the stage because she's the ONLY actress of a certain age group that hasn't had to scramble for roles. She hasn't had to go to television as a last resort to help resurrect any interest in her whatsoever, or play Melissa McCarthy's grandmother, or trot out Amanda Wingfield for the 800th time. At the age of 71, she can still command the best scripts, the best projects and at competitive salaries with male actors half her age.

She could still squeeze in. Glenn got nominated for "Albert Nobbs" which met with meh reviews. Meryl won for "The Iron Lady" which was pretty shite apart from the acting.
If Glenn gets a few raves for her performance alone she could still be considered.

Opie is a horrible director; he's tolerable with kitsch like Splash and Cocoon, but ruins anything serious. He de-gayed A Beautiful Mind, thus making it far simpler and less layered than it ought to have been. He's responsible for garbage like The Da Vinci Code and Rush, among many others. He is middlebrow with a vengeance.

Glenn's place in cinema history is secured by Fatal Attraction.
It's one of the most iconic roles any actress has ever given.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | November 13, 2020 1:01 AM |
R189 hear, hear! She's terrific. And much better than most.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | November 13, 2020 1:21 AM |
Yes R189 and R190. And I have mentioned before that Glenn WAS hot and attractive in the film as well. There are always these comments that she has no sex appeal, ect. Give me a fucking break. She was gorgeous and sexy.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | November 13, 2020 1:28 AM |
What I love about Fatal Attraction is how she gets increasingly unattractive as the film goes on. On the dvd there is a segment with the art director. He talks about how brave she was and without vanity. In the scene where she first sees Douglas at his office after her suicide attempt they wanted to put her in all black with dark circles under her eyes and her hair flat to show how much torment the character had been through. She let them do that which the guy thought showed her dedication to the role.
And yes those first scenes at the book signing party she is really striking as she walks around the room and the fat friend notices her.
by Anonymous | reply 192 | November 13, 2020 1:32 AM |
Glenn is fine in Fatal Attraction but I think you are way overhyping her performance. Maybe a great villain but I think any number of actresses could have played that role.

I think nearly everyone likes and respects Glenn. She's a wonderful actress. But, the running disappointment of not winning an Oscar while M does and also receives accolades for being "thee" actress - and the largely fictional rivalry due to that - is classic DL that everyone seems to have fun with.

As someone whose family is actually hillbilly, I get irritated at the Hollywood portrayal of hillbillies, they never get it right. But I've read excerpts of this book and the author doesn't get it right, either. Everything I read sounded like it was about rednecks, not hillbillies, which made sense when I realized JD Vance was from Ohio; the people living in the rural Appalachians of Ohio aren't the same as those living in the Appalachians of the Ozarks, and many argue they're not really hillbillies by definition, but Vance doesn't seem to know that.
Vance also really laid on the stereotypes pretty thick. I question just how authentic any of what he wrote is. Is he a self-proclaimed hillbilly who doesn't know the difference between a hillbilly and redneck? Or is he a cynical opportunist trying to create a brand for himself? I suspect the latter.

If she's lucky, Adams will get a Thanks For Your Service Oscar at the end of her career, a la Christopher Plummer. She and Jessica Shitstain had their moments and now those have passed. People are bored with them and their grubby awards-bait offerings.

[quote]Variety: From an awards season perspective, the movie is an obvious frontrunner for the Golden Globes comedy or musical races. Still, it can also make serious headway with the Academy voters, including best picture.
Glenn's best chance of winning something was another Golden Globe, but even that seems out of the question now. Variety didn't even mention her name in the Best Supporting Actress race.

It's not a bad film. My biggest criticism is that it's directionless. From the little I know of the memoir it is based on, the source material is more political and looks the whys and hows of severe poverty in "hillbilly culture". The film itself is just a guy who has made it and now forced to look at the hard upbringing he had. The story should have been - and it was only lightly touched on - was the pride and protection he felt over his upbringing, but how he is now divorced from it and whether he could wed those two backgrounds.
It's just under 2 hours so it's a quick watch and Gabriel Basso, who plays the adult version of the lead character, is nice to look at.

by Anonymous | reply 283 | November 25, 2020 1:27 AM |
I am just copying and pasting my review in another thread-
R283- She was very good- not great, and certainly NOT a bad performance like the reviewers said.
It was an earnest film.
Honestly- it was not bad. NOT REMOTELY campy like the reviews said..
Some boring parts. The actors were all good to very good.
The story itself is pretty cliched. You have seen it all before.
Glenn was very good. Academy award? Never going to happen.
Amy was good. The guy who played the son as an adult- Very good. The kid who played the son as a boy- Very good.
I was expecting far worse. And I did not laugh ONCE in a mocking way like these reviewers...

I’m dizzy with the threads for this pic.
Finished seeing this a few hours ago. To be honest, I am sort of puzzled by the less than favorable, i.e., angry, reviews for this, though I shouldn’t be because, let’s get real, the backlash was more against this being a “Republican story” than anything else. [I am a Democrat, so hold your horses.] It certainly wasn’t a masterpiece, and both Close and Adams left me wanting, but more so because of their limited screen time; they were both quite good in their interpretations, with Close coming better. Adams seemed to be trying a little too hard at times. Still, I finished the film thinking Close wasn’t given *that* one great scene to make this a worthy Supporting nod or win, which is a shame because with it - she could’ve been a contendah! I didn’t perceive her gears turning or clocks ticking at all. She did a great job. Adams certainly wasn’t given the sort of material that warrants a Best Actress nod or win. Funny enough, Adams should be campaigned in Supporting and though she may deserve a nod there, I’m not sure she earns a win with this.
That being said, I was surprisingly moved during certain parts of the film and did not come away thinking that the biggest victims in this story were being blamed for not trying hard enough to get out of and to transcend their circumstances. I thought all of the people were treated fairly and sympathetically, though not with much depth. Personally, as a film, this is definitely better than August: Osage County, which just felt artificial through and through, but that’s not saying much. I give it three out of five stars.
by Anonymous | reply 286 | November 25, 2020 3:10 AM |
R244 - I totally agree that Adams was excellent in that film (the movie was excellent in its entirety actually). I'm only about half way through Hillbilly... I don't hate it exactly, but one hour in and I'm not connecting much at all. The actors are doing a decent job - the material itself seems very lacking IMO. I will wait to comment more, but so far...not so good. As I have not read anything by J. D. Vance, I have no idea if he is solely to blame or if Howard (never been a fan) carries blame as well. As for the subject matter, the only movie that comes to mind as a comparison is Winter's Bone which was EXCELLENT. Even the JLaw haters would have to admit that she knocked it out of the park. I guess I will see how Hillbilly compares when I finish (the fact that I stopped watching half way is pretty telling however).

I watched it last night and thought Haley Bennett gave the best, most nuanced performance.
by Anonymous | reply 288 | November 25, 2020 11:13 AM |
Like 284, here is my review from another thread with a few edits:
I would give it a 2 out of 5. The performances were good for the material the actors had to work with. However the story was cliched drivel. I think movie would have been better served to focus on the mother’s mood disorder/addiction or JD’s progress in HS to the military to college.
Glenn Close should play her exact same character in a Tyler Perry Madea movie. The two of them would be fun to watch.
I thought JD Vance was more of a Libertarian type but he is a hardcore Republican (and seems to minimize it). Also, his wife clerked for Brett Kavanaugh. If you are on the fence, give the movie a pass - no need the line the pockets of this man, who is one of the producers.
R287 I agree, Winter’s Bone is a far superior movie about a similar subject matter.

Fairly substantial. His character is the focus of the film, but it toggles between him as a teen and an adult so he shares the lead with a younger actor.

The reviews don't appreciate those of us that get what it was like to go through life being there. I spent my formative years in the region. Glen and Amy did excellent work. The movie approximates what it was like to live there and nearly killed me. I had a PaPaw and Granny in some ways I adored, but also had a very dark side. Unfortunately the movie did not expand on the author's thesis from his memoir and only focused on the first few chapters. I encourage you all to read the book. It gives you an explanation as to why over 70 million people voted for one of the most awful people on the planet.

Glenn Close is AMAZING in this! She's a lock for an Oscar nomination, and most likely a win. I don't understand how some of you are lukewarm on her performance.
Amy's character is by far the worst part of the movie. She's so unlikable and unredeemable that it's impossible to root for her. Amy's performance is one-note and fails to generate even an ounce of sympathy for her character. She makes the second half of the movie a chore to get through.
Basso is good, but is lacking in charisma. I understand why he was chosen, since he looks similar to the author of the book, but he's no Tom Cruise.

by Anonymous | reply 314 | November 26, 2020 6:06 PM |
Glenn should get a Golden Globe and SAG nomination plus a few critics awards, then not get an Oscar nomination. It will help her with her Oscar win for Sunset Boulevard!
by Anonymous | reply 315 | November 26, 2020 7:21 PM |
I don't think it's a very good move (5/10). As said above it does meander and become directionless at times. A less commercial director than Ron Howard perhaps would have added more grit to it. As is, Howard gestures too much toward sentimentality. Part of the problem, too, is that the screen is way too sunny; the palette should be much more gray or muted.
However, these over the top negative reviews are ridiculous. The reviewer who said it was the worst movie in years must've just climbed out from under a rock. The movie also isn't campy at all; it actually needed more humor. So I have no idea what the Vanity Fair reviewer was smoking.
Yes, Close as Mamaw looks ridiculous. But as someone who spent several years in Southern Indiana that combination of a faded, over sized t-shirt and pajama bottoms with coke bottle glasses was not an uncommon outfit in that part of the country. People dress ridiculous down there and no one is shamed for it. A lot of the film reviewers are seemingly angry with the book's condescending and hard-right conclusion that poverty, destitution and drug addiction are the results of a lack of personal responsibility and cultural rot, not a rigged economy. The problem is that those politics are much more muted in the film. There are no anti-welfare tangents here unlike in the book. The main point of the movie problematically is simply that "SHE'S A BAD MOTHER." Howard doesn't go much deeper than that.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | November 28, 2020 7:03 AM |
I finally saw it, and thought it was bad, but not as bad as most critics said. It was typical formulaic Hollywood Inspirational, preaching the sacred credo, "“Family’s the only thing that means a goddamn. You’ll learn that” (that's from Mamaw, of course). Unfortunately, it wasn't fun to watch good-bad, just sappy bad, no better or worse than dozens of other Oscar bait films that most critics love. Gabriel Basso was beefy hot. I liked one scene, where Amy Adams, on her last ever shift as a nurse, steals a patient's opioids, downs them, then roller skates through the hospital corridors while "Cruel Summer" plays on the soundtrack. Amy Adams briefly reminded me of TV's Sweetheart at that point, and I mean that as a huge compliment, of course.

I wasn't that interested but after reading the terrible initial early reviews upthread on DL, I decided to have a watch. Where is all the camp and over the top performances that were referenced? If anything, this felt very lackluster. I didn't find any of the characters especially likable or interesting with the exception of Glenn. I thought she gave a great performance. To me, a great performance is when the actor loses themselves in the role and I felt like I didn't see Glenn too much, but saw the character. The reviewers said she was terrible. I thought all the acting was decent, but I quite with about 30 minutes left to go. I'll probably finish up today, but I guess my question was "why I should I care about any of these characters". They were particularly witty or interesting or dynamic. Was there more humor or some kind of X factor in the book that is missing in the film adaptation? You could basically watch this play out on any Intervention or documentary on the rural poor. What am I missing? I wanted to like this.

I didn't understand the crack the kid's mother made about Mamaw being knocked up at 13 and having to leave town. I wonder what happened to that baby because it looks like there's much more than a 13-year age difference between Mamaw and the kid's mother, even taking hillbilly aging into account.

Had a PaPaw and a Granny that were rough around the edges to say the least. Although the movie was limited compared to the memoir, it was fairly accurate to what life was like during my formative years. Thankfully, I was able to get out of that cycle. Amy Adam's character not far from my mother sans opiate abuse (that I knew of).

Liked the part where a younger Meemaw set her drunk, violent husband ablaze.

I haven't seen it yet but from what I've read, much of the overtly political (and conservative) themes from the book didn't make it into the film. So I'm curious what the film's message is, since it seems like the book's message was eliminated in the adaptation.

[quote] Hillbilly is not the N-word. I feel like hillbilly, white trash are all acceptable terms to use casually.
They are acceptable because let’s face it: with or without Trump, white trash are very much representative of whites. Getting offended by words and phrases that make fun of wypipo makes you a racist. The N-word will always be racist and off-limits for any non-Black person to say. Words and phrases such as cracker, honky, ofay, hick, hillbilly, and white trash are not racist, and anyone who is offended by them always reveals themselves to be a racist every single time.
Spare me the “but muh indentured servitude” crap. Your ancestors got off easy if all they had to do was work for seven fucking years. Even the poorest white bum still has white privilege that Barack Obama and Kamala Harris will never, ever, ever have. If he somehow becomes rich enough to afford a Mercedes, he will never get pulled over and accused of stealing it.
That’s why I’m tired of these shitty and manipulative movies treating the cracker oppressor class has anything other than an oppressor class. Ron Howard is a racist. The only reason he still gets work for this mediocre formulaic drivel is because he’s white and neither gay nor Jewish. The only whites who can legitimately claim to be oppressed on any grounds are gay white men and lesbians who got oppressed for being gay, not for being white.

Maddeningly stupid and biased. Implies the behavior of the people was ok - not just the mothers irresponsible drug taking, boyfriend hopping and horrible parenting but Mamaws mean angry behavior, verbal abuse and “toughness”. Agree it all seemed like a setup for the writer’s future run for political office - glorifying Deplorable behavior and beliefs.
As a child of poverty who got into an elite college, the idiotic experience of “which fork do I use” makes no sense. If you’re smart enough to get there, something like that wouldn’t happen. Yes there is a disconnect from the privileged experiences of your classmates - but it’s not 1950, it’s the 21st century.
Only redeeming quality was reminding me how lucky I am to be gay and to have realized I wanted and could have a completely different life than the way I was raised.

I haven't seen it yet but from what I've read, much of the overtly political (and conservative) themes from the book didn't make it into the film. So I'm curious what the film's message is, since it seems like the book's message was eliminated in the adaptation.
It's all about FAAAMILYYYY!

Glenn was finally get the little gold statute for this. Really it will be for her other better performances but that is not uncommon for Oscar wins. She is one of the best and deserves an Oscar.
