I’ve never disliked a performance of hers, but I’ve never been all that impressed by her either. She’s competent but rarely inspired, and struggles to put a personalizing stamp on the roles she plays—the recasting possibilities for her parts are endless.

She is also kind of plain and can easily look frumpy. Not sure why she tends to generate such excitement in the industry with her frequent Oscar nominations and seemingly endless supply of high profile projects.

Prior to this week, everyone was talking up this long time A list mostly movie actress to finally win an Oscar after so many nominations without a win. Now that people have seen the movie, she is more likely to win a Razzie. It is a horrific movie. The alliterate actress who is also in it and who is an Oscar winner/nominee wants no part of it.

Never make a movie out of right-wing agitprop. Even if you’re successful at the time, eventually you’ll be looked at as a hack.

True leading ladies would never be seen looking so hideous onscreen. Audiences want to see glamourous and beautiful stars to lift them up from their mundane lives.

Joan Crawford, Mae West, Raquel Welch and Barbra Streisand would never be filmed looking like a hillbilly.

Glenn looks like a Mo Collins character from MADtv.

The other Amy Adams project, 'The Woman in the Window', that was supposed to come out last year, tested so poorly with audiences, they had to go back and do reshoots. Still not sure when that film is supposed to be released. She clearly needs some sort of hit or well-received role as a palette cleanser from her mediocre output as of late. It seems like the Academy really wants to give her an award, but they're still waiting for the right project to justify it.

He worked for the state department and always was very well groomed and put together. He looked like William Powell. Things must have really gone downhill in the heartland.

Meryl doesn't have a Tony because it doesn't interest her. If she wanted one, she'd have one at this point. She doesn't have to go to the stage because she's the ONLY actress of a certain age group that hasn't had to scramble for roles. She hasn't had to go to television as a last resort to help resurrect any interest in her whatsoever, or play Melissa McCarthy's grandmother, or trot out Amanda Wingfield for the 800th time. At the age of 71, she can still command the best scripts, the best projects and at competitive salaries with male actors half her age.

It seems to me that Glenn may get a sympathy nomination for supporting. Who is her competition in the year of Covid?

It's one of the most iconic roles any actress has ever given.

Yes R189 and R190. And I have mentioned before that Glenn WAS hot and attractive in the film as well. There are always these comments that she has no sex appeal, ect. Give me a fucking break. She was gorgeous and sexy.

What I love about Fatal Attraction is how she gets increasingly unattractive as the film goes on. On the dvd there is a segment with the art director. He talks about how brave she was and without vanity. In the scene where she first sees Douglas at his office after her suicide attempt they wanted to put her in all black with dark circles under her eyes and her hair flat to show how much torment the character had been through. She let them do that which the guy thought showed her dedication to the role.

And yes those first scenes at the book signing party she is really striking as she walks around the room and the fat friend notices her.

Glenn is fine in Fatal Attraction but I think you are way overhyping her performance. Maybe a great villain but I think any number of actresses could have played that role.

Glenn gets a lot of abuse on DL, but I have to say that I really love her work to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. She’s a good gal.

I'd rather watch Glenn be an over-the-top, trainwreck, caricature mess any day than another role filled with Streep just coasting along.

I think nearly everyone likes and respects Glenn. She's a wonderful actress. But, the running disappointment of not winning an Oscar while M does and also receives accolades for being "thee" actress - and the largely fictional rivalry due to that - is classic DL that everyone seems to have fun with.

I really respect Glenn as a mental health advocate, intellect and actress.

As someone whose family is actually hillbilly, I get irritated at the Hollywood portrayal of hillbillies, they never get it right. But I've read excerpts of this book and the author doesn't get it right, either. Everything I read sounded like it was about rednecks, not hillbillies, which made sense when I realized JD Vance was from Ohio; the people living in the rural Appalachians of Ohio aren't the same as those living in the Appalachians of the Ozarks, and many argue they're not really hillbillies by definition, but Vance doesn't seem to know that.

Vance also really laid on the stereotypes pretty thick. I question just how authentic any of what he wrote is. Is he a self-proclaimed hillbilly who doesn't know the difference between a hillbilly and redneck? Or is he a cynical opportunist trying to create a brand for himself? I suspect the latter.

It's not a bad film. My biggest criticism is that it's directionless. From the little I know of the memoir it is based on, the source material is more political and looks the whys and hows of severe poverty in "hillbilly culture". The film itself is just a guy who has made it and now forced to look at the hard upbringing he had. The story should have been - and it was only lightly touched on - was the pride and protection he felt over his upbringing, but how he is now divorced from it and whether he could wed those two backgrounds.

It's just under 2 hours so it's a quick watch and Gabriel Basso, who plays the adult version of the lead character, is nice to look at.

Finished seeing this a few hours ago. To be honest, I am sort of puzzled by the less than favorable, i.e., angry, reviews for this, though I shouldn’t be because, let’s get real, the backlash was more against this being a “Republican story” than anything else. [I am a Democrat, so hold your horses.] It certainly wasn’t a masterpiece, and both Close and Adams left me wanting, but more so because of their limited screen time; they were both quite good in their interpretations, with Close coming better. Adams seemed to be trying a little too hard at times. Still, I finished the film thinking Close wasn’t given *that* one great scene to make this a worthy Supporting nod or win, which is a shame because with it - she could’ve been a contendah! I didn’t perceive her gears turning or clocks ticking at all. She did a great job. Adams certainly wasn’t given the sort of material that warrants a Best Actress nod or win. Funny enough, Adams should be campaigned in Supporting and though she may deserve a nod there, I’m not sure she earns a win with this.

That being said, I was surprisingly moved during certain parts of the film and did not come away thinking that the biggest victims in this story were being blamed for not trying hard enough to get out of and to transcend their circumstances. I thought all of the people were treated fairly and sympathetically, though not with much depth. Personally, as a film, this is definitely better than August: Osage County, which just felt artificial through and through, but that’s not saying much. I give it three out of five stars.

R244 - I totally agree that Adams was excellent in that film (the movie was excellent in its entirety actually). I'm only about half way through Hillbilly... I don't hate it exactly, but one hour in and I'm not connecting much at all. The actors are doing a decent job - the material itself seems very lacking IMO. I will wait to comment more, but so far...not so good. As I have not read anything by J. D. Vance, I have no idea if he is solely to blame or if Howard (never been a fan) carries blame as well. As for the subject matter, the only movie that comes to mind as a comparison is Winter's Bone which was EXCELLENT. Even the JLaw haters would have to admit that she knocked it out of the park. I guess I will see how Hillbilly compares when I finish (the fact that I stopped watching half way is pretty telling however).

It gives you an explanation as to why over 70 million people voted for one of the most awful people on the planet.

Amy's character is by far the worst part of the movie. She's so unlikable and unredeemable that it's impossible to root for her. Amy's performance is one-note and fails to generate even an ounce of sympathy for her character. She makes the second half of the movie a chore to get through.

Basso is good, but is lacking in charisma. I understand why he was chosen, since he looks similar to the author of the book, but he's no Tom Cruise.

I don't think it's a very good move (5/10). As said above it does meander and become directionless at times. A less commercial director than Ron Howard perhaps would have added more grit to it. As is, Howard gestures too much toward sentimentality. Part of the problem, too, is that the screen is way too sunny; the palette should be much more gray or muted.

However, these over the top negative reviews are ridiculous. The reviewer who said it was the worst movie in years must've just climbed out from under a rock. The movie also isn't campy at all; it actually needed more humor. So I have no idea what the Vanity Fair reviewer was smoking.

Yes, Close as Mamaw looks ridiculous. But as someone who spent several years in Southern Indiana that combination of a faded, over sized t-shirt and pajama bottoms with coke bottle glasses was not an uncommon outfit in that part of the country. People dress ridiculous down there and no one is shamed for it. A lot of the film reviewers are seemingly angry with the book's condescending and hard-right conclusion that poverty, destitution and drug addiction are the results of a lack of personal responsibility and cultural rot, not a rigged economy. The problem is that those politics are much more muted in the film. There are no anti-welfare tangents here unlike in the book. The main point of the movie problematically is simply that "SHE'S A BAD MOTHER." Howard doesn't go much deeper than that.

I finally saw it, and thought it was bad, but not as bad as most critics said. It was typical formulaic Hollywood Inspirational, preaching the sacred credo, "“Family’s the only thing that means a goddamn. You’ll learn that” (that's from Mamaw, of course). Unfortunately, it wasn't fun to watch good-bad, just sappy bad, no better or worse than dozens of other Oscar bait films that most critics love. Gabriel Basso was beefy hot. I liked one scene, where Amy Adams, on her last ever shift as a nurse, steals a patient's opioids, downs them, then roller skates through the hospital corridors while "Cruel Summer" plays on the soundtrack. Amy Adams briefly reminded me of TV's Sweetheart at that point, and I mean that as a huge compliment, of course.

I wasn't that interested but after reading the terrible initial early reviews upthread on DL, I decided to have a watch. Where is all the camp and over the top performances that were referenced? If anything, this felt very lackluster. I didn't find any of the characters especially likable or interesting with the exception of Glenn. I thought she gave a great performance. To me, a great performance is when the actor loses themselves in the role and I felt like I didn't see Glenn too much, but saw the character. The reviewers said she was terrible. I thought all the acting was decent, but I quite with about 30 minutes left to go. I'll probably finish up today, but I guess my question was "why I should I care about any of these characters". They were particularly witty or interesting or dynamic. Was there more humor or some kind of X factor in the book that is missing in the film adaptation? You could basically watch this play out on any Intervention or documentary on the rural poor. What am I missing? I wanted to like this.

Having been born and raised in the region, having spent summers at grandparents' home in Warfield, KY, can say it is not too far off the mark for what life was like. Had a PaPaw and a Granny that were rough around the edges to say the least. Although the movie was limited compared to the memoir, it was fairly accurate to what life was like during my formative years. Thankfully, I was able to get out of that cycle. Amy Adam's character not far from my mother sans opiate abuse (that I knew of).

It was good to see Bo Hopkins again. I didn't know he was still alive, much less still acting.

I just watched to to about halfway, where present day mother refuses the rehab. Amy Adams had a hard role to play - the bitch flies into some rage in every scene. The mom-beating-the-kid is a tad too realistic to be a "Mommie Dearest" camp highlight.

Liked the part where a younger Meemaw set her drunk, violent husband ablaze.

It just wasn’t very good. It was the material more than the acting. The acting wasn’t bad at all. Thing is, they weren’t even hillbillies. They lived in a residential neighborhood and had decent cars. There was only five minutes of anything that looked like a holler. It was just a very draggy, dull story.

watched this last night, not the worst movie I have ever seen but some performances were laughable at time, especially Glenn and her cigarette ... I would have been pissed if I spend real movie for this but on netflix, it was fine

There were a lot of problems with this movie but it's no Showgirls. And who picked that actor to play adult JD? It was as if they went to a college football game and grabbed a player off the field and said "Hey, you want to be in a movie?"

I just watched it.

Unimaginative dialogue, unrealistic juxtapositions ("hillbilly" dude is sooooooo different from the people at the lawyer dinner, he doesn't know which fork to use, please!), banal declarations ("cuz fambly is all there IS!"), annoying camera work, over the top melodrama...

It's a Hallmark movie with some F words thrown in.

Glenn was the only thing I liked about it, actually.

Glenn was finally get the little gold statute for this. Really it will be for her other better performances but that is not uncommon for Oscar wins. She is one of the best and deserves an Oscar.
