Wentworth Miller Announces He Is "Officially" Done With Prison Break: "I Don't Want to Play Straight Characters"

Looks like a dookie smeller.

Prison Break is still on air???? Which channel?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 9, 2020 10:42 PM |
Since I don’t want to play gay any longer, I’ll take on the role.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 9, 2020 10:43 PM |
I hope he's saved/invested well. A lot of gay roles are shit and he has plenty of competition for the good ones.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 9, 2020 10:50 PM |
There goes those Hallmark movies that regularly cast openly gay actors in straight roles.

In summary: fuck you, breeders!!!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 9, 2020 10:55 PM |
Couldn't his character come out as gay on Prison Break???
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 9, 2020 10:56 PM |
So he's going to back Legends??
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 9, 2020 11:13 PM |
He's so gorgeous.

by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 9, 2020 11:25 PM |
Why would an actor want to limit themselves in this way? Isn't this stance completely antithetical to what it means to be an actor?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 9, 2020 11:25 PM |
Please present dong and hole, Wentworth. TIA.

Matt Bomer was complaining the other day about being denied straight roles, but being offered nothing but gay roles
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 9, 2020 11:26 PM |
He should realize his job is acting. As in playing characters, not himself.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 9, 2020 11:27 PM |
Does he have that many offers? Why would you come out and then refuse an offer to play straight? Isn't that progress for the gays?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 9, 2020 11:28 PM |
He is still so freaking hot
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 9, 2020 11:29 PM |

It's not on. There was a revival in 2017 but the actor who plays his brother is pushing for another season.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 9, 2020 11:30 PM |
He only wants to play gay characters? So he’s basically announcing his retirement?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 9, 2020 11:31 PM |
I thought he got fat and dumpy 10 years ago? Did he get in shape again?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 9, 2020 11:34 PM |
And yet... so many gay actors fight for straight roles. Actors should focus on good roles and not weather their character sucks dick or eats pussy!

R21 sorry.. I meant “whether”

He’ll be lucky if gets a soap opera role again.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 9, 2020 11:37 PM |
He does a lot of writing, and I think producing. I don’t think he needs to worry. And I so desperately want to marry him...

He knows this isn't the best thing to say for his career. But it's his life, if that is what he wants so be it.

Is he still with Luke MacFarlane?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 9, 2020 11:51 PM |
His declaration was part of a bigger message.
wentworthmiller: "This is my favorite IG account," someone wrote in response to a recent post. Thank you. I want you to know I saw that. I see the positive comments and DMs (a lot of them anyway). Affectionate. Supportive. Appreciated (by me).
Obviously there are comments and DMs I appreciate less. Who are these people? On my page? What backwards-ass, Stone Age values country did they crawl out of? The U.S.?
I won't be disappearing (too many cool things to repost). The ability to comment likely will.
I'm not concerned for myself. I can't be "bullied" in this space. I have too much power. "Delete. Block. Deactivate." Etc.
But I take seriously the possibility of queer kids visiting here, recently out of the closet or exploring the idea... I don't want them exposed to bullshit.
On a related note... I'm out. Of PB. Officially. Not bec of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don't want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).
So. No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons... I understand this is disappointing. I'm sorry.
If you're hot and bothered bec you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one...
That's your work. - W.M. 🏳️🌈
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 9, 2020 11:53 PM |
Good for him. I love that he's like "their stories have been told (and told).". He's nearing 50, he has mental heath considerations that are probably due to his struggle to be open about his sexual identity. He has probably made the right decision -- and the healthiest decision.
I really wish him well. He seems like a good guy. Datalounge yearned and lusted for him to come out - and he did, to the most vicious and hateful scorn I've witnessed here as a 2-decade Datalounger. It confirmed that there is NO prize for being gay. Our challenge is to find joy, purpose and well-being in a completely inhospitable world.

Does this mean becoming Mrs. Wentworth Miller is off the table?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 10, 2020 12:02 AM |
Never say never again. Especially when we're talking about starring in a popular TV show and NOT about beating your kids. Social media can create an echo chamber where you start to think the public is accepting of everything you do and you yourself are solely responsible for your career from now on. Especially if you're gay and get thousands and thousands of fans saying you're doing the right thing. Suddenly you're out of work and no one besides mini indie productions and Ryan Murphy wants to hire you.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 10, 2020 12:07 AM |
I'll take those discarded straight roles!

Imagine how different the TV landscape might be if every gay actor in Hollywood took this kind of stand.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 10, 2020 12:22 AM |
r39, if they did and more talented gay actors were out, then I would think it was so stupid for straight actors to say they won't play gay actors.
In my mind it's acting not a reality show. You are playing a role. Only addicts get to play alcoholics and druggies. Only rape victims get to play people that have been raped. Only a true serial killer should play any role of a serial killer. No it's stupid. It's called acting.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 10, 2020 12:27 AM |
Lesbian Fiona Shaw was asked about this issue as she stars in "Ammonite" with Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet playing lesbian lovers.
Shaw does not want to be drawn too deeply into the question of who gets to play who, but did say, “I’m Irish, and I’d hate to believe that I wasn’t allowed to play English people. The same thing applies.”
Her personal belief, she said, is that “acting is an act of imagination, and also an act of skill, and I think it’s so important to hire skilled people who are imaginative. Of course, on the other side of that, we must encourage people of all abilities and specificities. Everybody must get a chance at this.”
Still, on that note, she said, “I wouldn’t put too many boundaries on what you can and cannot play.”

by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 10, 2020 1:15 AM |
[quote]Matt Bomer was complaining the other day about being denied straight roles, but being offered nothing but gay roles
He said he lost opportunities because he came out as gay. He didn't say he was only offered gay roles. He's probably one of the few gay actors that audiences can buy as straight.
After looking at what's on "The Black List" I'd say most scripts are shit that these actors are getting and we all know that films and tv shows would still rather cast a straight actor than a gay one even if the character is gay unless you work for Ryan Murphy and you're not Darren Criss.
I'd say it's a decision for Wentworth to do that and not necessarily something he's being forced into especially since he could have easily gone back to Prison Break and played straight again. It wasn't like he was "searching" for a project. He had one offered to him. He didn't want it. I completely respect that.
He's also 48 years old and probably interested in doing things he wants to do.
[quote]I thought this show was over about 10 years ago?
Has that stopped any show from trying to come back? Everything old is new again and this one will be back soon.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 10, 2020 1:54 AM |
Wait... I thought the reason he kept ending up in the slammer was because he couldn't get enough shower sex?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 10, 2020 2:01 AM |
I'm 20 years old and watched Prison Break on Netflix. I think Wentworth is hot regardless of the times. (Except when he was fat, and the heyday is over.) For example, Matt Bomer is 80s or 90s-like.
Hondsome, Princeton University, tall, classy.. Great, but he's suffering from depression and doesn't speech or activities to gain popularity. I like him working as a screenwriter.
I don't speak English, so I'm sorry if the grammar and language are wrong.
By the way, is it true that he was slutty when he was unknown? From his relationship with Brett Ratner & Ryan Murphy(on Popular).
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 10, 2020 8:33 AM |
He’s right, gay roles are still so lackluster and still we’re seeing most of the biggest gay roles go to straight (or closeted) actors.
Advocating for more gay roles played by gay actors is a good thing. Hollywood needs to change and its homophobia needs to be eradicated.

I continue to root for WM. It’s good of him to consider his audience and how online bullying on his SM may affect them.
Good for him if he’s in a position to pick and choose jobs/roles. Who wouldn’t want want the freedom to do that? I’m confident he’s aware of the consequences, but has other goals and projects in mind.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 10, 2020 12:56 PM |
More gay actors need to fight to put openly gay actors in gay roles. It's important because openly gay actors are routinely discriminated against in Hollywood.
Ask Matt Bomer about being told he's too gay to play Superman back in the early 2000s despite Brett Ratner wanting him too.

R21, If acting wasn't about a characters sexuality then why are there leading men archetypes who always "get the girl"? What exactly is the point of that then? Do we really need to see Tom Cruise lusting after every young actress in all his action movies?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 10, 2020 6:26 PM |
R15, That's about as logical as saying "women playing female characters are just playing themselves" 🙄
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 10, 2020 6:36 PM |
R12, What does it mean to be an actor? Just play everything and anything? I'm sure part of being an actor is being selective about what you can play/can't play and what you're good at playing as well.
Wentworth has been around long enough, I'm sure he's played a variety of roles in his lifetime, if he wants to "limit" himself that's up to him.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | November 11, 2020 8:41 AM |
Besides reprising his Prison Break role in 2017, he has in fact only played gay roles for the last few years: the last incarnation of his character on Legends of Tomorrow/The Flash was married to Russell Tovey, which is the first time out gay men played gay superheroes on TV, and the characters on his brief stints on Madam Secretary and L&O: SVU were both gay too.
Good for him.

R89 He only had one TV show lasted few seasons that is popular. He then only star in some supporting role for some movie. Not very successful.

[quote]Nonsense, most openly gay actors today had to come out at some point in part because they were assumed to be straight.
No, the point is. When they come out are they still booking straight roles because studios/producers/etc. believe audiences won't have an issue, "buying them" as "straight?"
Which is their usual excuse for no longer hiring an actor for straight roles after they come out.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | November 12, 2020 6:59 AM |
This person knows him well.
"He was back on Law & Order: SVU a couple of weeks ago too, playing an openly gay lawyer. I think he's also playing a gay character on Madam Secretary. Before he deactivated Facebook he would talk a lot about his interest in LGBT representation and media visibility, so I guess it's important to him to play gay roles. Good for him.
He lives by his mother in Connecticut now and took another 2-year break from acting recently. Always hope he's doing well, I know he has struggled a lot at times.

He is out to family and friends, and only closeted to the public for career reasons. And he doesn't - and never has - bearded. He may come across as 'conservative' to some because he doesn't love to talk about his personal life, as much due to shyness and natural reticence as to wishing not to broadcast his homosexuality. R107 and others, if one is solely devoting himself to ONLY gay roles, he's going to learn to be not so picky about scripts and production values then. Let him consider Lifetime then.
Even with a push to create gay content and characters, those two channels still wouldn't keep him working regularly. I don't see how one can have it both ways really.

He bought a house in a tiny little town in Connecticut in 2017 very close to his mother's house and his family there. He just put the house on the market in August and sold it a couple of weeks later. I wonder what is next for him? Moving back to L.A. or NYC? Was he just bored of living in a small Connecticut town without any friends or gay scene around?
I think playing only gay roles is a bad choice for him. He played Russell Tovey's husband/partner on the Flash and their kissing scenes and interactions were not very convincing. While Tovey is great actor and usually has chemistry with everyone, Wentworth just couldn't pull it off and seemed awkward and uncomfortable kissing a guy on screen.
