I know there have been threads on this topic already - but I'll add my 2 cents.
I think he would be great as the White House spokesperson. He cuts through all of the lies and charged questions that conservatives throw at him.
He has been better at communicating Democratic ideas and positions than anyone else - including Biden.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 9, 2020 3:56 AM |
He will probably get Sec of Veteran Affairs, which is a thankless job, but his team is pushing for Ambassador to the UN & that would be a much better stepping stone to a presidential run in the future.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 9, 2020 3:57 AM |
He can be a lawnmower for white house lawn. He is gay. He may has a sense of beauty. But then again, he picked Chesten.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 9, 2020 4:00 AM |
R4 He would definitely be a great white house spokesman but it's below his aspirations. That's the kind of job that a DC insider type gets & it's usually the ceiling for them. He needs a position that will prove he can run some aspect of the country or foreign relations since he'll obviously run for pres again in the future.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 9, 2020 4:00 AM |
R4 is of course right, but so is R5. He needs to be leading a department or organization, or have a very high profile to take a position. Press sec ain’t gonna cut it, although he’d be brilliant.
Of course, he maybe want to pursue a legislative run of some type, which is the most traditional path.

R10 Ambassador to the UN would be great but Biden will probably give the role to someone more seasoned in that area... the frontrunner is apparently a woman who helped lead negotiations with Iran and served in Obama's cabinet in another role

This always get used with Pete. He's too young. He's not seasoned enough. I think Pete has proven himself ready to lead in any number of areas. The UN would be the perfect role for him. But I'm not going to get mad if he doesn't get it, but it would sure be nice.

Secretary of the Interiors.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 9, 2020 4:22 AM |
Why can't he start in the spokesperson position and then move up? Pete has 2 problems:
1) People aren't familiar with him enough - this will put him in front of the media on a daily basis.
2) He doesn't have any vast government experience to be a dept head. Not that it has stopped Trump, but it still isn't a great look.
If he was white house spokesperson, he could do a TON in changing people's attitudes toward gays and elevate his profile.

R19 Oh I want Pete to get Ambassador to the UN! Just from what I've read it's way more likely he'll get the VA job because there's someone with a lot of experience in mind for the UN position.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 9, 2020 4:44 AM |
R21 Because it's a totally different career path. WH press secretary is a PR job. No one goes up from there to senator or president... Pete literally almost won the dem nomination. The spokesman gig is not happening, it's going to an articulate DC insider.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 9, 2020 4:46 AM |
He's going to want a foreign affairs role. Secretary of State, Ambassador to UN, Nato envoy etc. He needs to prove the world can respect a Moe but of course that will be a disaster. He's not masculine enough to make it not count. It's gonna take a big angry muscle bear to break that glass ceiling.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 9, 2020 4:48 AM |
Pete has tons of experience in foreign affairs -- he was (is still?) CIA, afterall.

UN? He does not have the right experience for that position. UN is a difficult position at any level. If he is indeed asking for that, it shows how stupid he is.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 9, 2020 8:31 AM |
R55 Pete Buttigieg is a Harvard graduate and Rhodes scholar who was an intelligence officer in the Navy who served overseas and he speaks several languages fluently. His experiences running for POTUS and his assured handling of the media all clearly indicate he's a superb candidate for the U.N. post....or any post in the government for that matter.
Not sure what you think is required for the U.N. gig. The current holder of the gig is a mega Trump donor who graduated from the University of Kentucky. Her major qualification is being rich. Before her, it was fucking Nikki Haley, whose major gig prior was being governor of South Carolina.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 9, 2020 8:42 AM |
Pete will be given a major role in the Biden Administration. It won't be Press Secretary which is a shitty gig.
He's proven his worth in the last year. He's an excellent choice for a big job. Plus, it's his only way into Washington; he has very little chance of winning any major races in a Red State shithole like Indiana.

I think it’s interesting that Pete is the only 2020 candidate who is part of the Transition Team advisory board. Joe really likes Pete, I think he reminds Joe of Beau. Pete will have a very visible role in the Biden administration. It may not be a cabinet secretary but a role like (and god forgive me for typing this) Kellyanne Conway - close advisor and confidant who is frequently on TV and news programs advocating for the Administration’s position on a number of issues.

by Anonymous | reply 83 | November 9, 2020 2:56 PM |
I'm guessing Chief of Staff needs two overriding qualifications: personal closeness to the President, so you can tell him when he's going off the rails. Strong connections and experience in Washington, so you understand where the real levers of power are. I don't think Pete has either of those.
(And yeah, I know none of that applies to the administration of the Asshole. Not having an administration like the Asshole is part of the goal here.)

Yes, it was easy for someone like him, but he impressed a lot of the granpy and grannys on their side with his composure and ability to cut a bitch with a velvet knife. They like that sort of thing.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | November 9, 2020 3:36 PM |
I don't care about raising his profile, or his future electoral prospects (which are dim for all Dems eyeing statewide elections in Indiana). Just considering his resume and strengths, VA is the best fit for him in terms of actually making government work better for ordinary Americans. I think he has a great deal more promise as an administrator of policy than as its designer, but he needs to let go of the little boy dreams of being the most powerful man in the world. He should take inspiration from James Baker, who exercised a lot of power without ever being elected to office. What this country desperately needs are people who are good at public service for its own sake, not just as a way to kill time until the next better opportunity arises.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | November 9, 2020 3:39 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 99 | November 9, 2020 4:26 PM |
So here is an idea: HUD is huge department, with real policy potential. It's the natural secretary position for a black person, with extensive government experience. But Biden is going to have lots of people of color in his Cabinet. There would even be some benefit with not putting a black appointee into the "usual" position - black people could and should be Secretary of State, Attorney General etc. Pete was mayor (remember the U in HUD is Urban), with hands on experience with urban renewal, housing etc.. Again, a lot of successful policy work in HUD could give him a kind credibility and track record he lacks now.
HEW could similarly achieve this, but given his experience as a city mayor, HUD is better fit.

The President usually appoints the head of their party, considering the Democrats lost seats in the house maybe Tom Perez should be replaced or he could be given a cabinet position again. R105 R106 Right, I think Adams' career ladder is through the Governorship. Imagine, if she can get these two Senate seats, win the Governor's office, do a good job there, then, depending on what the circumstances are w/Biden, Harris etc. she'd be a front runner for President in 2024, 2028. If Biden determines not to run in 2024, Harris goes another way, for whatever reasons, and Trump runs again in 2024, wouldn't Abrams v Trump be fun? And his losing to a black woman.... sigh.

Obama was a teacher and community organizer who became a state senator in Illinois for 8 years (thus totally unknown outside Illinois) then a mostly unknown US senator for 4 years (really only known as the black senator with the crazy name) when he became president at age 47.
Pete Buttigieg was an unknown mayor of a medium sized city in Indiana for 8 years while also serving in the Naval Reserve overseas in Afghanistan and decided to explore a presidential run at age 36 that eventually grew into an announced campaign which gave him national/international exposure over the last 2 years thus also giving him a huge amount of experience in becoming a nationally known political figure.
Both men are highly intelligent (both went to Harvard/Obama also went to Columbia and Pete was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford). Both are ceiling breakers. Both are highly ambitious, charismatic and terrific public speakers. They have a lot in common. It's dumb to poo poo Pete who, whether you like it or not, is charting a similar course to Obama from a "nobody" to a major political figure in a rapid amount of time and at an even younger age.

Add to r131 Pete is showing a mastery of the media. What's fascinating is also the EQ that Chasten brings in. They are a political powerhouse couple in the making like JFK and Jackie.

Uh, I'm R131 and while I think Pete is an up and comer, to suggest that Chasten is some sort of Jackie Kennedy is a tad....
Nutty.

Pete was not merely a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, he left with First Class Honours. That means he's one of the smartest people of his generation, and that is one reason for his meteoric rise past a lot of other people, whether POC or white.
His capacities for thinking on his feet and looking pleasant while eviscerating his opponents are very handy qualities for the Biden Administration to have, since Joe has neither and the other side is stupid.

So if Hillary is appointed for the UN, as is the latest word, and the chief of staff is assigned, what will Pete's position be in the cabinet. I say senior adviser.

R137 Hillary Clinton for the UN -- where did you see that? Link?

It was seen nowhere. Hillary is a nice lady, but she will have no role in a Biden administration.

President-elect Joe Biden is continuing to prepare to assume office on January 20th despite Donald Trump’s refusal to concede after losing the 2020 election.
“The president-elect on Thursday also traveled to Rehoboth Beach, Del., where he has a vacation home and where he is expected to stay through part of the weekend. Biden, who on Wednesday named Washington veteran Ronald A. Klain as his incoming White House chief of staff, is not expected to formally announce other administration personnel this week,” The Washington Post reported Thurday evening. “But behind-the-scenes conversations between Capitol Hill and the transition team continued to occur, and Biden’s team has also tapped a coterie of senior House and Senate Democratic officials to serve as liaisons to Hill offices until Biden officially assumes the presidency, according to congressional aides.”

“One intriguing name being discussed privately is former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to the person familiar with the chatter who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The thinking behind the move was that it would be a way for Biden to highlight the importance of that position in his administration, and that placing her there would raise the prestige of the U.N. itself at a time when global cooperation, and the U.S. role on the world stage, has ebbed,” the newspaper [wapo] reported.

UN ambassador is a demotion from State. Is this Cabinet fan fiction or something?

R142 I agree with that's it's a demotion, but the article cited by R140 does make an interesting case. By putting someone of her level there, it is to show the world the importance being placed on a primary institution of globalism.
Furthermore, I wonder if this would be seen as step for her to run for UN Secretary-General when the current 5-year term ends in 2022. If she would run for that, she would be the first woman UN Secretary-General.

R145 Hillary is toxic in this current political climate. It would be a bad idea.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | November 13, 2020 6:36 AM |
Only internally, though, R145. The rest of the world doesn't hate her.
Of course, the ideal UN Ambassador would be Obama, and that wife even the Queen loves.

R146 So you are suggesting that we should be highly focused on what the other side of the aisle will say -- just as Trump, McConnell and others constantly do?

Hillary is not becoming Ambassador to UN. In response to someone tweeting the speculation Susan Rice tweeted: "This is ridiculous and an insult to @HillaryClinton. Stop please"

Now, with the announcement that longtime aide Denis McDonough had been nominated to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs—a role seen by many movement leaders as a cabinet position of last resort for former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg—pressure from advocacy groups and key supporters is increasing for Biden to live up to his campaign promise to nominate an openly LGBTQ cabinet member
