Mmmmm...cake!

She stands head and shoulders above all you other Queens.

by Anonymousreply 1November 2, 2020 11:25 AM

Ultimately, they chopped off her cake hole.

by Anonymousreply 2November 2, 2020 11:35 AM

She'd probably look like this:

She was 14 and Louis was 15 when they married.

by Anonymousreply 4November 2, 2020 12:00 PM

Yeah, R4. And neither one of them lived to be forty. Obviously I knew they weren't old when executed, but 37 & 38 is young.

by Anonymousreply 5November 2, 2020 12:18 PM

This brooch which belonged to Marie Antoinette sold a few years ago at auction for $36 Million. Most likely it was one of these obscenely wealthy billionaires with tens of billions who bought it using their equivalent of pocket change. This is some straight up "Let them eat cake" shit for the 21st century!

This is a life-changing announcement, OP. Thank you!

by Anonymousreply 7November 2, 2020 12:25 PM

She never said that cake remark, at least there's no historical record of it. It was a lie perpetrated by the palace enemies.

That said, she and King Louis were incredibly naive, some say stupid, about what was going ahead of the revolution. Like the Romanovs in Russia more than a century later, they had plenty of time to flee but chose to remain.

by Anonymousreply 8November 2, 2020 12:27 PM

She was also a shopaholic and very vain

by Anonymousreply 9November 2, 2020 12:39 PM

Let them eat cak!

by Anonymousreply 10November 2, 2020 12:43 PM

An iconic and vicious Austrian bitch, who was oddly polite to her executioner.

Are you sure that’s not Lindsay-Belle Graham on one of his special Saturday night GOP get togethers?

by Anonymousreply 13November 2, 2020 2:17 PM

Only on DL would this be a post (which is why I will never leave). 😂

by Anonymousreply 14November 2, 2020 2:19 PM

Have a slice of cake today, in her honor. Bonus points will be awarded if you cut it with a guillotine.

by Anonymousreply 15November 2, 2020 2:31 PM

Too soon, OP, too soon.

by Anonymousreply 16November 2, 2020 2:33 PM

Her style....swooooon. She was very flat-chested, though

by Anonymousreply 17November 2, 2020 2:45 PM

Did she love The Gays?

by Anonymousreply 18November 2, 2020 2:47 PM

She'd feel right at home in 2020 France, with all the beheadings going on there these days.

by Anonymousreply 19November 2, 2020 3:04 PM

"She was also a shopaholic and very vain"

So by that standard should 90% of DL go under the guillotine?

Supposedly, one of King's aunts made the "Let them eat cake" remark. Marie Antoinette was a material girl who lived in a dangerous bubble, I don't think she was a complete monster. Marie's parents married her off to a complete stranger when she was fourteen, I don't think she had many choices in her brief life.

by Anonymousreply 30November 2, 2020 7:34 PM

Was she the Melania of her day?

by Anonymousreply 31November 2, 2020 7:36 PM

She had a little hobby farm where she would play at being a milkmaid.

R31, Marie, at least, had some style & glamour. Mare also gave money to charity, that was highly unusual for royals in those days.

Maybe "Let them eat cake" was a meme so lots of people said it.

by Anonymousreply 38November 2, 2020 11:10 PM

She seemed like a naive, sheltered, silly little girl. The original white privilege. but it also seems she was setup by a court of mean girls.

What they did to her kids was deplorable.

by Anonymousreply 39November 2, 2020 11:41 PM

I was watching a video about her today and they showed some political cartoons about her from that time. Just super vicious stuff, one showed her making out with an officer and her husband walked in.

The person at the museum explained that this was a way to say her children were illegitimate, and that if Louis tolerated his wife having kids with another man and accepted them as his heirs to the throne, it showed he was weak and spineless and that he was too weak to deserve to be king. So they were attacking him through her. A lot of the political cartoons about her were very exaggerated and not true.

I think what that tells you is some people didn’t have the balls to attack the king (which would presumably be treason and have a stiff punishment), so they attacked her instead. They were really attacking him by proxy. That explains a lot of the mean stories about her.

by Anonymousreply 40November 2, 2020 11:53 PM

R4 They were also so naive they didn’t know how to have sex and didn’t consummate their marriage for years.

by Anonymousreply 41November 3, 2020 12:06 AM

R40 It was also more acceptable because she was a foreigner and they could also fan the flames of xenophobia as well.

by Anonymousreply 42November 3, 2020 12:21 AM

Okay, Why are Americans so fascinated by our Queen ?

by Anonymousreply 43November 3, 2020 12:22 AM

R42, a lot of foreign queens were accused of being disloyal to the country, back when kings really had no choice but to marry a princess from a foreign country. People were really hostile to them, but the kings had to marry somebody.

I feel sorry for these very young girls, yanked away from their families, and the locals hated their guts. It was a bad system.

And when it's not our Queen Americans use our guillotine as if it was their history and as if it was something trivial, as if it was your culture or your history. On our side we are shocked to see videos of your riots with our guillotine used to designate those whose heads you would like to cut off. It's not something folkloric, nor to play with

There was no xenophobia towards her, there was jealousy from some ... Courtisans as we say.

by Anonymousreply 48November 3, 2020 12:31 AM

Jesus, they keep talking as if it really was their Queen.... You americans are the craziest.

by Anonymousreply 49November 3, 2020 12:34 AM

This little film attempts to recreate one of Marie Antoinette's more controversial dresses: it was controversial due to its apparent simplicity and (for the time) immodesty. It's a fascinating process, and very poignant.

I noticed on some TV show that Brits seem to pronounce "Marie" more like Mary, rather than the way most Americans pronounce it (muh-REE.)

by Anonymousreply 51November 3, 2020 12:53 AM

Marie wasn't a monster, and she got blamed for a shit-ton of stuff that wasn't her fault. She was massively unpopular, because the French blamed her for the excesses of the court and the raging inequality of wealth and the abuses of the rich, which were not her doing. She hated the excesses of the court too and most of the courtiers. But she was blamed for everything, because she was a foreigner and a woman, so all the xenophobes focused on her rather than the king or his ministers because she was the "other" who was closest to the monarchy.

So she wasn't a monster, but she was pretty damn useless. If she hated the court, she could have spent her time founding charity hospitals or buying bread for the poor instead of playing at being a milkmaid in her little fake village. If she had, France would have been better off in a billion different ways.

R41, they knew perfectly how to have sex. However Louis XVI was impotent. Hence his inability to make her pregnant for 7 years. Of course she was blamed for not giving the Crown an heir.

by Anonymousreply 57November 3, 2020 1:01 PM

Yes, both Louis XVI and his queen had plenty of time to flee Versailles; lord knows plenty of nobles and others at court including members of Bourbon family (such Les Tantes/The Aunts), but the king would not leave, and while he urged Marie-Antoinette to leave and take the children, she wouldn't, so that was that.

First and foremost one must remember for a monarch or even nobility there is a certain disgrace in fleeing one's country. You saw this over hundred years later with not just the Nicholas II and his immediate family, but many other members of Romanov family. Dowager Empress Marie would not get on that British warship sent to her rescue until every last person who wished to board had done so. Even then with Bolshevik army literally bearing down upon them Empress Marie dithered; Her Imperial Majesty simply found it disgraceful to flee Russia under those circumstances. It was finally put to her by commanding officer bluntly and severely "Your Imperial Majesty, they are going to kill *YOU*". With that being said Empress Marie finally got aboard ship.

Even many Russian nobility refused to flee Russia during the revolution and years afterwards under Lenin. This as then now called "Former People" were murdered/executed ( and all sorts of gruesome ways, imprisoned, stripped of every possession right down to clothes on their bodies. True many did manage to get out, but others remained in Russia of their own free will.

Back to Louis XVI and his family....

No one could have foretold HM and queen would be murdered. Indeed for much of their early imprisonment things weren't that bad, and Had the king been a bit less obstinate and understood the situation more clearly France may have emerged with something along lines of a constitutional monarchy.

What hardened many attitudes against the king and queen was that ill fated flight to Varennes in June 1791. That event cost the king most of what good will remained towards him in certain circles. Marie-Antoinette was already hated before the revolution, but while her husband was living it offered some protection. The execution of Louis XVI did not produce effect among populace revolution had hoped; they needed something more awful to bind the people to their horrible plots; so attention turned to the hated Queen of France.

by Anonymousreply 58November 3, 2020 2:05 PM

R57 Her mother had people reporting her everything Marie did or didn’t. She wrote to Marie how important it was for her position to get heir.

by Anonymousreply 59November 3, 2020 2:30 PM

R47, the story has persisted that Louis and Marie didn't know how to have sex for centuries, and that Marie's brother had to explain the facts of life to him. Now that was fairly normal for a girl of that time who was sold into marriage as a virgin or else, but not for a but then, Most boys would have taken mistresses and learned from the eager ladies of the court, but Louis was a shy, awkward, self-hating kid kid, who may have had more issues about sex than ignorance.

The marriage seems to have been loving and eventually produced three kids, so Louis wasn't entirely devoid of heterosexuality, but he never took a mistress and was probably the only kind of France ever to be faithful to his wife. I wonder what his deal was. He doesn't seem to have been gay, maybe he was depressed or had low teststerone?

by Anonymousreply 60November 3, 2020 5:07 PM

Maria Theresa of Austria "spied" on her daughter because that is what rulers did in such instances. Maria Antonia of Austria marriage to the Dauphin of France was no different than many or any other royal marriage at that time; mixture of family avarice and political ambitions. As such much for Austria rode upon now Marie Antoinette being a success.

Only protection an empress or queen consort truly had was to produce an heir with perhaps a few spares. Mary, Queen of Scots was turfed out of France by Queen Catherine de Medici in large part because she was powerless as simply a widow queen consort who was not mother of (now) king.

More to the point under French and Catholic church laws at that time unconsummated marriages could be annulled at anytime. Until the Dauphin made use of his wife, Marie Antoinette's position was tenuous, and her mother Maria Teresa knew it, hence her constant streams of advice to daughter.

Problem was that Maria Antoina was totally unsuited to her new role, and didn't have much time to prepare. She wasn't terribly bright, nor well educated and was mostly left on her own largely ignored by her mother and growing up at court as a rather dull princess. It was only when her mother needed a princess to slot into an alliance with France that Maria Theresa "woke up" and realized "oh, I've got Maria Antoina lying about spare.....", so that was that.

The court at Versailles was a hot mess of strict protocol, etiquette, backstabbing, sex and other louche behavior. To this hotbed of scandal was through the innocent 14 year old archduchess. Marie-Antoinette was *Catholic* in a way many French at court were not; and she was also stubborn. Off the bat one of her largest battles (and some say ranks up there with biggest mistake) was insulting Louis XV's official mistress, Madame du Barry. The rest as they say is history....
