Isn't that funny R21? Despite the marriages, the machismo, the ruby red conservatism, the many children, I always get a vibe from John Wayne in his younger days.

Gary Cooper.

Van Heflin especially in his Oscar winner Johnny Eager.

Julie Andrews - she wails like a cruise ship horn.
Myrna Loy.
David Niven.
Dirk Bogarde, obviously. Not all gay actors ping but he PONGED, as someone upthread said. Ditto for Alan Bates.
Ah, yes. Both Glenda Jackson and Meryl Streep have ponged to me for years. Any gossip about that? My gaydar's never wrong when it's that loud.
Oh, and Cate Blanchett, of course!!! What a closet case!

Julie Andrews just seems asexual to me, as if even lesbian sex would be too messy and too much of a bother for her.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 30, 2020 12:58 AM |
Vincent Price is my favorite actor. Anyone have the tea on him? I find him so handsome even in his campy films.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 30, 2020 1:02 AM |
Julie Andrews is absolutely homo and I don't understand how there can be any doubt about it. She was married to an openly gay man, ffs. Happily!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 30, 2020 1:27 AM |
Jean Arthur always pinged for me. On screen, she reminded me of Mary Martin, who was also lesbionic. Both of them played Peter Pan on Broadway, just a few years apart.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 30, 2020 1:34 AM |
Van Heflin, R25? Very under-rated actor who was outstanding in every role he played, but I never got a gay vibe. He was married twice and had 3 kids (which I realize is not dispositive). His sister Fran played Erica Kane's mother Mona forever.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 30, 2020 1:42 AM |
So, anything on Meryl?

I have never been able to decide who was better looking Dean or Monty. Both had hard times even though they were big stars and both died way too young. Dean’s appeal in his movies was stronger so maybe him... but it doesn’t matter. Both made excellent movies.

Agree about Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant and David Niven. I'd also add Agnes Moorehead, James Mason, Alan Bates, George Chakiris. Rock Hudson never seemed gay to me in his films but some of his later publicity photos when he wears a mustache, he seemed kind of cloney.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 31, 2020 10:32 PM |
R36, you'd be wrong about David Niven and James Mason -- not gay, just British. Both such good actors, among my favorites.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 31, 2020 10:36 PM |
I know he is not a movie star but Howard Hawks films always have a homo undercurrent.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 31, 2020 10:38 PM |
Chakiris flames for sure
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 31, 2020 10:39 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 1, 2020 12:18 AM |

Occasionally, after Mother's evening pills and brandy, she will comment while we're watching a classic on TCM together. Whenever Katherine Hepburn or Barbara Stanwyck appear onscreen, she'll fan herself and say loudly, "Crack the window, junior, cause I smell DIESEL!"
I find it upsetting.

Vincent Price spent a lot of time in London, and was a regular at the City Of Quebec pub in Marble Arch. It has been a gay venue since the 40s, and it is popular with older men and their admirers.

Robert Cummings. Raymond Burr pinged in certain roles - at least for me. Tony Perkins. Tyrone Power. Robert Walker. Burt Lancaster.
Stanwyck, majorly. Margaret Lindsay (I think she was gay)? Deep voice. Katharine Hepburn, depends on the role. Not really.
Henry Fonda, for some reason, especially early roles. Alan Ladd. Patsy Kelly, obviously.

Lucille Ball on Manners: "David wasn't in the one scene I did in Roman Scandals, but he watched every scene shot. He was tremendously enthusiastic, and he...invited me to supper...He was mobbed everywhere. All the time he kept telling me I had style and personality. He said if I persevered I'd get somewhere in Hollywood. Not once did he ever hint that he'd like to take me home to his boudoir...He was so utterly charming."
He didn't want to take Lucy home, but he did spend 30 years with his male partner.

ALAN MARSHAL - Handsome Dennis Parker look-a-like who starred in MGM "B" flicks throughout the 1930's. Very sensitive in personality. He even sported the cumguzzler's mustache before that was a thing.
ZACHARY SCOTT - A favorite of mine. Same urbane, slightly gay personality as Alan Marshal.
FRED ASTAIRE - I've never believed him as a hetero onscreen.
GENE KELLY - A gay smugness about him.
MAUREEN O'HARA - There's something very butch about her mannerisms IMO. Gorgeous lady with delicate features but butch. She could have married practically any man she wanted in her heyday but ended up with a with a fat, unattractive, Gay closet case. I may be on to something.

OP, I just found this gem about Vincent Price's wife Coral Browne on an old DL topic from years ago.
"My mother was a model in the St Louis and Chicago area in the 1950s and 1960s. Apparently, at a gallery event, Coral Browne hit on her. My mother confessed this to me in the 1990s and said, bless her heart, "I don't think Vincent Price KNEW the kind of woman he married!""
Sounds as if (not surprisingly) Price's marriage was as lavender as a Macy's perfume counter.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | November 26, 2020 6:23 AM |
Cute story, R134.
People close to the couple knew that Price and Browne adored each other. Devoted best friends. And yes, each of them knew exactly the kind of person they were marrying: gay gay gay.

Nelson Eddy - One of the most flamboyant singers at MGM and a constant source of irritation to MGM's L.B. Mayer.
After Eddy bedded Tyrone Power in 1938 (Power was on loan from 20th Century Fox for the MGM pic, "Marie Antoinette"), Mayer arranged a marriage for Eddy with the slightly older, Ann Franklin, former wife of Sidney Franklin, one of Metro's prolific directors. Eddy was almost outed by Louella Parsons after she saw him at Musso and Frank (a celebrity restaurant) making out with one of MGM's male supporting players.
Eddy loved having oral sex performed on him but refused to reciprocate, fearing it would damage his throat and ability to sing.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | November 27, 2020 2:04 AM |
^ There's a group of fangirls who want to believe Nelson Eddy and Jeannette MacDonald were a couple for real. Imagine having a life that revolves around "shipping" two people who died 50 years ago....
by Anonymous | reply 137 | November 27, 2020 2:16 AM |
Long before Donald Trump created an alternate reality that bears no resemblance to the real world and lies for a living, these "fan ghouls" created this alternate universe where Jeanette and Nelson were lovers. Apparently it fulfilled some need they had. However, it was easy enough to prick the surface and get the real facts. No columnist of note in those days (the 70's and 80's) whether Jim Bacon, Bob Thomas, or even Rona Barrett, fell for it. The truth was that Nelson Eddy was a gay man and Jeanette MacDonald had no interest in him as a lover.
These same desperately pathetic "fanatics", although in greatly diminished numbers, continue to attempt to perpetuate their myth. In truth, you cannot believe a word they say, even if they notarized their tongues.

by Anonymous | reply 142 | December 2, 2020 2:54 PM |
So many comments, I think, are because of what we now know, rather than what we perceived pre-knowledge.
Tyrone Power? Wherein? Oh, when his character Diego is deliberately playing the fop in "Zorro"? Don't try that with "Witness For the Prosecution."
John Wayne? Yep, don't believe those "insights," either.
There is nothing "gay" about James Mason in his movies, either.
As for Montgomery Clift: He certainly had "sensitive" perfected, but does he "ping" in "A Place in the Sun"? "From Here to Eternity"? "The Heiress"? "Indiscretion of an American Wife"? IDTS.

David Niven is a star I never understood. Granted, I’ve never seen him in a full movie, but when I do watch him I think, “That’s it?”
I get the sense he really worked on the social side of Hollywood, and his personal popularity kept getting him hired.

David Niven can be enjoyable in the right role. I'd recommend, "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" where he is very acerbic and funny as a NY Theater critic opposite Doris Day. It's not an annoying domestic comedy but has a edge to it and a great supporting cast. I'd also recommend "The Bishop's Wife" with Cary Grant and Loretta Young. A very well-made holiday classic without the syrupiness of some similar films.
Beyond those titles, I sometimes find him unbearable to watch and wonder how he was able to sustain such a long and successful career.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | December 2, 2020 5:13 PM |
R144, I liked David Niven very much in a few Late 30s comedies; Bachelor Mother with Ginger Rogers and Eternally Yours with Loretta Young. He played Debonair Society Playboy roles to perfection.
