Josie Torahā€™s sex change took real well! I know yā€™allā€™s will disagree with me for the sake of disagreeing though

ROFL Josie Torah

She got Lensā€™d

by Anonymousreply 1October 27, 2020 2:18 PM

I have to admit, this made me laugh a few times.

by Anonymousreply 2October 28, 2020 3:54 AM

Is Mario Lopez going to be on this? Who will he play? His character from back then?

by Anonymousreply 3October 28, 2020 3:59 AM

šŸ’©

by Anonymousreply 4October 28, 2020 3:59 AM

Hoping for a very special Parkland episode.

by Anonymousreply 5October 28, 2020 4:03 AM

It looks hysterical. Plus, there's no Screech or Belding. The scene where the acapella group is singing wooo is pretty funny.

R3, in the usual SBTB story line cliche endings, he's now the Phys Ed coach.

by Anonymousreply 6October 28, 2020 4:04 AM

They worked really hard to make sure you didn't see JJ Totah more than 3 seconds at a time. Didn't work. You can still see he's a tranny from space.

Also visible from space- the acapella joke.

by Anonymousreply 7October 28, 2020 4:09 AM

Both Mark and Mario are starting to look a lot older and both look like they have fillers. Elizabeth looks good but way too smooth.

by Anonymousreply 8October 28, 2020 4:48 AM

"Josie Torahā€™s sex change took real well! "

Yes, I agree.

by Anonymousreply 9October 28, 2020 4:49 AM

I don't like the thought of an alternate universe where Zack Morris is the Governor of California.

by Anonymousreply 10October 28, 2020 4:59 AM

It does look more entertaining than that shitty 90210 reboot/whatever that was.

by Anonymousreply 11October 28, 2020 5:03 AM

Looks abysmal.

by Anonymousreply 12October 28, 2020 5:10 AM

Now only Dustin Diamond is the missing link.

Every time I see Josie Torah, I think of that song from Hamilton: Youā€™ll Be Back.

by Anonymousreply 14November 2, 2020 12:10 PM

I canā€™t get Peacock on my Samsung TV.

by Anonymousreply 15November 2, 2020 2:51 PM

R15 consider that a blessing.

by Anonymousreply 16November 3, 2020 10:33 AM

That it some tragic plastic surgery on the original cast's faces.

Love the Youtube comment:

[quote] Trailer starts: ā€œIā€™m so excited, Iā€™m so excited!ā€

[quote] Trailer ends: ā€œIā€™m so...scared

by Anonymousreply 17November 3, 2020 10:42 AM

So....

by Anonymousreply 18November 26, 2020 11:07 AM

R18 how bad is it?

by Anonymousreply 19November 26, 2020 12:25 PM

Did Totah get the operation and get castrated?

by Anonymousreply 20November 26, 2020 1:13 PM

Is the subscription worth it?

by Anonymousreply 21November 26, 2020 1:43 PM

[quote]Did Totah get the operation and get castrated?

Yes. She keeps a rolled up copy of the Hollywood Reporter shoved up there so it doesn't heal funny.

by Anonymousreply 22November 26, 2020 3:24 PM

[quote] Is the subscription worth it?

Peacock is free.

by Anonymousreply 23November 26, 2020 3:56 PM

A friend recommended that I give the first episode a try, so I gave in and watched it yesterday. I was genuinely shocked at how clever it is; like a cross between The Brady Bunch Movie and 30 Rock. And what a weird thing to hear the word "dickmatized" in the halls of Bayside.

That said, I doubt Iā€™ll watch any more. SBTB was never for my generation. But kudos to everyone for actually coming up with a creative approach to rebooting the brand.

by Anonymousreply 24November 26, 2020 4:01 PM

R23, what about Peacock Premium?

by Anonymousreply 25November 26, 2020 4:07 PM

[quote]Peacock is free.

Free 'cock. Who could resist?

by Anonymousreply 26November 26, 2020 5:15 PM

Was Screech too busy with his scat porn career to be in this?

by Anonymousreply 27November 26, 2020 5:21 PM

What will Josieā€™s next thirst trap move be when the attention wears off? You know the trans girls love high drama. Sheā€™ll probably accuse Jeffrey Tambor of abusing her like that fucking psycho Trace Lysette.

by Anonymousreply 28November 26, 2020 5:41 PM

The original was terrible and they found a way to make it worse. Yes, I was a child when it was on the air. Even then, it was stupid homophobic drivel produced by people allied with Pat fucking Robertson. Putting trannies on it only doubles the homophobia.

I hate streaming media. I hate 2020. I hate 90s nostalgia. I want my adulthood back.

by Anonymousreply 29November 26, 2020 6:00 PM

R29 yeah I think it's hilarious how they have a trans character and no one bats an eye, but in the old show, they never once tried to have a gay character or even moment or episode

People still have such disdain for gay MEN, even Hollywood which was CREATED by gay MEN. It really factors into the fact that straight people don't really like them and unlike lesbians, male homosexuality is not and will never be thought of as "hot" or a "fetish" for straights

by Anonymousreply 30November 26, 2020 6:08 PM

[quote]The original was terrible.

Fuck you.

by Anonymousreply 31November 26, 2020 6:58 PM

So is the target audience for this Gen Xers looking for nostalgia with added snark? Or is it for teenagers/tweens?

by Anonymousreply 32November 26, 2020 10:36 PM

[quote] Fuck you. ā€”Miss Bliss

Sorry, Hayley. You were great in those old Disney movies of yours, but you were better off getting fired from this mess of a show.

by Anonymousreply 33November 26, 2020 10:37 PM

His character is stupid but incredibly hot.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 34November 27, 2020 4:25 PM

The new Zack and Slater are very hot

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 35November 27, 2020 9:25 PM

It's funny how the creators of SBTB were Evangelicals. The teen cast was pretty sexualized, the guys always shirtless and the girls in swimsuits or midriffs and short shorts/skirts. I'm pretty sure Slater and Zack made a lot of young gay boys discover themselves.

by Anonymousreply 36November 27, 2020 9:33 PM

In other words, it resembled no actual high school in the United States of America past, present, or future.

by Anonymousreply 37November 28, 2020 1:30 AM

I kinda assumed Saved by the Bell was supposed to be more of the world of rich high schoolers in Southern California and we know everyone in SoCal is ridiculously pretty and happy.

by Anonymousreply 38November 28, 2020 3:49 AM

[quote]like a cross between The Brady Bunch Movie and 30 Rock.

The reboot was conceived by a 30 Rock writer, so that's not surprising.

They seem to have it be half a parody of SBTB and half an issues-oriented dramedy like Degrassi. And it...kinda works?

by Anonymousreply 39November 28, 2020 3:59 AM

[quote]and we know everyone in SoCal is ridiculously pretty and happy.

That's news to us!

by Anonymousreply 40November 28, 2020 4:02 AM

$5 says Jessie's kid turns out to be Slater's son too.

by Anonymousreply 41November 28, 2020 4:08 AM

A high school in 2020 without any gay students?

by Anonymousreply 42November 28, 2020 6:29 AM

Kind of weird that they decided to switch the original show's format (multi camera vs. single camera).

by Anonymousreply 43November 28, 2020 7:46 AM

Dear New Zack..yes.

by Anonymousreply 44November 28, 2020 8:13 AM

Makes me glad I never watch this tired nonsense. Who's the audience for it?

by Anonymousreply 45November 28, 2020 8:14 AM

I wasn't planning on watching it until I heard the 30 Rock comparisons. I liked it. Decent way to kill a few hours and the boys are PRETTY. Dustin Diamond is obviously persona non grata, but why no cameo for Mr Belding?

by Anonymousreply 46November 28, 2020 8:21 AM

Screech must feel terrible that he's been excluded. This is so mean.

by Anonymousreply 47November 28, 2020 9:41 AM

R42 In California no less?

by Anonymousreply 48November 28, 2020 9:55 AM

This show was prob greenlight because Cobra Kai became a sucess on Youtube and then a huge hit when it was moved to Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 49November 28, 2020 9:56 AM

The cast for the reboot are noticeably older than the OG cast who were 14 to 15 when the show started. I liked how the cast of the original show actually were teens and grew during the show's run.

by Anonymousreply 50November 28, 2020 12:40 PM

The roids really destroyed Mark's skin.

by Anonymousreply 51November 28, 2020 12:44 PM

I was surprised to see raves in The New York Times and Washington Post. However, one review indicated the Zack and Kelly appearance was a lowlight.

by Anonymousreply 52November 28, 2020 12:51 PM

R46 isn't the actor who played Belding a creep? Tiffani didn't look too happy to see him when they were reunited on some talk show.

by Anonymousreply 53November 28, 2020 1:19 PM

He's a dirty old man from what I've heard. Constantly trying to hook up with 18 year olds.

by Anonymousreply 54November 28, 2020 1:49 PM

R53 Not sure about him but I know one of the older actors was pounding Neil Patrick Harris when he was really young.

by Anonymousreply 55November 28, 2020 1:50 PM

I love it. Especially the little details.

The poor latina has Zack's old phone.

The boring monotone teacher.

Jesse's caffeine chip like they hand out in AA.

Lark Voorhees looks fabulous and was funny in her cameo.

by Anonymousreply 56November 28, 2020 1:52 PM

Bayside was a pretty conservative area. Probably Orange County or someplace. They made such a big deal about marijuana

by Anonymousreply 57November 28, 2020 1:58 PM

R56 whose the boring monotone teacher?

by Anonymousreply 58November 28, 2020 2:10 PM

All young women are homely on purpose to make Jose Totah pass as hot?

by Anonymousreply 59November 28, 2020 2:10 PM

is the actor who plays Mac gay IRL?

by Anonymousreply 63November 28, 2020 2:33 PM

[quote]whose the boring monotone teacher?

Mr. Dewey? I think.

He was on the original Saturday morning show back in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 64November 28, 2020 2:40 PM

Surprised Mr Dewey hasn't retired by now, my favorite was Mrs Simpson

by Anonymousreply 65November 28, 2020 2:42 PM

Of course r59. Lexi was, from the start, advertised as the hottest girl of Bayside.

by Anonymousreply 66November 28, 2020 2:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 67November 28, 2020 3:10 PM

I get it for free since I'm an Comcast/Xfinity customer

by Anonymousreply 68November 28, 2020 3:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 69November 28, 2020 3:31 PM

She looks a bit...voluptuous.

by Anonymousreply 70November 28, 2020 3:33 PM

If Mario Lopez needs a girl to take to prom, I'm available.

by Anonymousreply 71November 28, 2020 3:34 PM

What's with Dustin and Dennis not being invited? What, because he wrote a book over a decade ago? Move on. Dustin may be difficult, but judging by the attitudes of some of the others, I'm thinking there was some truth to him being made to feel like an outcast on the set. I don't know what their beef with Dennis is even about.

If Will and Janet and Suzanne and Joyce could make up, then there's no reason for this feud to continue.

by Anonymousreply 72November 28, 2020 3:42 PM

They're both creeps, and Dustin basically called Tiffani a cumdump in his book.

by Anonymousreply 73November 28, 2020 3:43 PM

Lark Voorhies did a radio interview recently and hinted that Dustin was holding out for more money.

ā€œHe wants to be paid and respected, we would [like] for him to come back on set. Heā€™s going through his growing painsā€¦he can get back on track. Heā€™s going through his adult issues and all of this but I am sure heā€™ll be back ā€” granted the perfect contract for him, Iā€™m sure he would be back.ā€

The others, with the exception of Lark, are all producers on the show. They're a smart bunch.

by Anonymousreply 74November 28, 2020 3:49 PM

Elizabeth's tits have gotten bigger

by Anonymousreply 75November 28, 2020 4:06 PM

When will the new season of Punky Brewster air?

And the Emmy Rossum as ANGELYNE movie?

I watched previews for both.

by Anonymousreply 76November 28, 2020 4:07 PM

Sponsored by the trans agenda to erase gay people.

by Anonymousreply 77November 28, 2020 4:11 PM

surprised they didn't try to make Mac or Jamie gay or bi

by Anonymousreply 78November 28, 2020 4:17 PM

I can't get over those strange chipmunk cheeks of Mario Lopez. That guy looked so hot for decades and now he looks like a Las Vegas crooner with a bad facelift.

by Anonymousreply 79November 28, 2020 6:06 PM

Since this show is woke they should just make all the guys have a big gay orgy

by Anonymousreply 80November 28, 2020 11:09 PM

And in stupidest news of the day....

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 81November 28, 2020 11:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 82November 28, 2020 11:37 PM

Fuck you, R79!

by Anonymousreply 83November 28, 2020 11:40 PM

R81, the show finally got some publicity.

by Anonymousreply 84November 28, 2020 11:54 PM

I watched the first 3 episodes in the background and the last one. I'm really afraid this will be the future of LGBT content, putting trans "straight" protagonists in an environment and call it representation. I was never a fan of the original, I love 30 rock and I hated this show with a passion.

Is there any gay character I missed besides the fem theater kid the trans girl keeps putting down?

Josie's character is so annoying it's like they're trying to make this show fail.

by Anonymousreply 85November 29, 2020 12:22 AM

How is the trans girl supposed to be the most popular in school?

by Anonymousreply 86November 29, 2020 12:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 95November 29, 2020 10:33 AM

R85 is right and so is R93. This show is not just bad, it is evil. It is why cancel culture is a thing and needs to happen. It is what cancel culture should be targeting. Selling gay erasure to children is beyond hate speech; using a television sitcom as a pretext to justify it and attack those who call you out on your bullshit makes it twice as hateful.

by Anonymousreply 96November 29, 2020 10:40 AM

Is the tranny playing a real woman?

by Anonymousreply 97November 29, 2020 10:43 AM

That coming out article he wrote was nothing but homophobic self-pity combined with pop psych bullshit.

This show is a war crime.

by Anonymousreply 98November 29, 2020 10:48 AM

A tranny wouldnā€™t be most popular lol. Theyā€™d chase it down the halls!

by Anonymousreply 99November 29, 2020 10:52 AM

The only reason they put a tranny on this show is as a human shield to accuse anyone who points out the bad writing and acting of bigotry. Such a thing would be an act of psychological projection.

[quote] How is the trans girl supposed to be the most popular in school?

Itā€™s a public school in Los Angeles, so they are grading on a curve.

That and their homophobic agenda saying that you have to be a girl in order for boys to like you. I think one of the production companies behind this was also responsible for the revival of [italic]Will & Grace[/italic] which I also despise then and now. Now I have another reason to hate them both.

But seeing a [italic]30 Rock[/italic] writer on this crap makes me think less of that show, too, even though I actually liked it and binge-watched it all when it was on Netflix.

Arabs engaging in violence? Surely you jest!

by Anonymousreply 115November 29, 2020 2:50 PM

So you can now add misogyny to the ever-growing list of this showā€™s unforgivable sins.

by Anonymousreply 116November 29, 2020 2:54 PM

I've watched two eps so far (Putlocker has them all up for free), and while it's not a bad show, I keep wondering why I should care about this new group of kids. Similar to 'SBTB: The New Class' back in the day. Mac Morris is cute, though...but I'm a sucker for blondes. Thanks for the revealing pic, R44.

by Anonymousreply 117November 29, 2020 3:14 PM

I still donā€™t know why anyone should care about the old class either. Zack was a bully. His friends are all enablers. In real life, he would most likely be living in a double wide trailer in Petaluma by now, drinking half of his welfare check away and spending the rest of it on some fake-titted bitch he simps for, still wondering where his life went wrong.

And it was a pretty crappy school if they were the ā€œcoolā€ kids. Seriously, even [italic]Beavis and Butt-Head[/italic] depicted high school more believably and without the cringeworthy eat-your-vegetables sermonizing.

Discerning TV viewers did not want this show around the first time and we donā€™t want it back. Get this shit show off the air and keep it off for good.

by Anonymousreply 118November 29, 2020 3:29 PM

R117 is Putlocker legit? Looks spamy.

by Anonymousreply 119November 29, 2020 3:56 PM

R119, Putlocker is fine once you close all the pop-ups and hit the play button. Don't download anything from there, obviously. I stream and have never had any issues.

by Anonymousreply 120November 29, 2020 4:03 PM

They really need to bring in Gina Gershon to play Jessie's frenemy.

by Anonymousreply 121November 29, 2020 4:08 PM

After this, they should change the name of Peacock to Peahen.

by Anonymousreply 122November 29, 2020 4:26 PM

[quote] I know yā€™allā€™s will disagree with me for the sake of disagreeing though

by Anonymousreply 123November 29, 2020 4:32 PM

The early 90s seems to be enjoying biggest nostalgia fascination right now. Apart from that Power Rangers and Baywatch movie, Fuller House and Girl Meets World. They are doing a reboot of Fresh Prince, a Friends reunion special and now are doing this Saved By The Bell sequel. Next will probably be The Nanny, Clarissa Explains It All, Martin, and Step by Step.

by Anonymousreply 124November 29, 2020 9:00 PM

Clarissa is already in the pipe.

by Anonymousreply 125November 29, 2020 9:44 PM

I could have sworn Dennis Haskins (Mr. Belding) was dead, but I was very wrong.

by Anonymousreply 126November 29, 2020 10:12 PM

Not one of those shows was any good the first time except for [italic]The Nanny[/italic] and [italic]Fresh Prince.[/italic]

by Anonymousreply 127November 29, 2020 10:48 PM

R127 Unfortunately nostalgia blinds people's ability to judge quality. Look at how so many manufactured pop stars are becoming legacy acts and touring like New Kids on the Block, Jonas Brothers, Jennifer Lopez, etc. Even reality TV has become nostalgic for people, they revived Jersey Shore and it's just a matter time before they bring back The Simple Life with middle-aged Paris and Nicole. Lindsay Lohan is surviving on nostalgia of 2000s kids to keep herself in the spotlight.

by Anonymousreply 128November 29, 2020 10:56 PM

There is no reason to be nostalgic for any of that shit. Now you know why the first two letters in that word our ā€œnoā€.

Now you know why there is still nostalgia for the 1980s and every time period before it: this crap didnā€™t exist yet!

by Anonymousreply 129November 29, 2020 11:00 PM

If itā€™s a good story like Cobra Kai then people will continue watching.

by Anonymousreply 130November 29, 2020 11:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 131November 29, 2020 11:00 PM

R130: Except in that case the original source material was actually a good movie to begin with. And it didnā€™t hurt that William Zabka aged extremely well.

by Anonymousreply 132November 29, 2020 11:01 PM

Nostalgia is a type of hysteria. It's not logical. Most people aren't really nostalgic for Saved by the Bell though. They laughed at the cornball writing and stupid plots and also enjoyed looking at the eye candy cast. It's sort of a meme now too because of "Zack Morris is Trash" videos and many young people are fascinated by the tacky colorful fashion which has made a comeback on social media. It was a live-action Saturday morning cartoon too even with E/I logo. Terrible show but people enjoyed it in reruns because it was so stupid.

by Anonymousreply 133November 29, 2020 11:04 PM

R82. Both Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack) and Mario Lopez (Slater) were ā€œSaved from the (Plasti-) Bell,ā€ with both of their cocks being all-natural and intact.

Welcome Freshman was funnier than Saved by the Bell. It was much darker and cynical and more reflective of the generation too. Saved by the Bell seemed too 1950s wholesome for the 90s just like The Brady Bunch did for the 70s as well. But The Adventures of Pete & Pete was the best 90s Nick show followed by Kenan & Kel and Salute Your Shorts. Hey Dude also on Nickelodeon was much worse than Saved by the Bell though.

I think the zoomers are much more fascinated with Save by the Bell and assume it was prime time tv and very popular in the early 90ā€™s with teenagers and young adults but in truth this show was geared towards younger kids hense the colorful clothes to get their attention same as power rangers.

Saved by the Bell was also probably enjoyed by horny teen boys and horny old men who wanted to bang Tiffani, Lark and Elizabeth.

Those guys seem like the same guys who would be calling you the F-word and shoving you in a locker in real life. And considering the religious fundamentalism of Peter Engel, I am guessing that that is not an accident.

They did nothing for me then or now. Why would you want any of them when Rick Schroder and Jason Bateman had both turned 18 by that point and Chad Allen is actually gay?

[quote] Saved by the Bell seemed too 1950s wholesome for the 90s just like The Brady Bunch did for the 70s as well.

Except that the 1950s also had [italic]Dobie Gillis[/italic] which gave us Maynard G. Krebs. That show aged better when Nick at Nite had it around the same time. So did [italic]Leave it to Beaver[/italic] or even [italic]The Patty Duke Show[/italic].

The problem with this show was not the attempt at wholesomeness which obviously backfired in the face of all that jailbait. The problem was the bad writing, bad acting, and homophobia from its bigoted producers. Even the flaws of a show like [italic]The Brady Bunch[/italic] seem trivial by comparison.

by Anonymousreply 139November 29, 2020 11:16 PM

Welcome Freshmen seemed like a parody of Saved by the Bell. The kids were selfish and assholes like real teenagers and they hated their principal and always mocked and disobeyed him again like real teens would.

Despite watching Nickelodeon when I was a kid, I never heard of that show, but at least it sounds better than most of the shows from the Dan Schneider and Disney Channel bilge factories of the last 20 years.

Itā€™s funny Tiffani-Amber was all freaked out/disgusted when Mr. Belding surprised her.

by Anonymousreply 142November 29, 2020 11:25 PM

Dan Schneider was the Peter Engall of the 2000s with all of his derivative teen sitcoms which got worse and worse each installment. Disney Channel manages to be worse though. It's like they insult the intelligence of minors honestly.

R118 They were the cool kids because they were financially well-off, athletic and attractive. Basically equals: "I peaked in high school and college". They didn't need to be sincerely nice though they were actually were since they put up with Screech who is the most annoying thing in TV history. If the show had more realism to it, Zack and Slater wouldn't even acknowledge the existence of Screech and Lisa would get a jock to beat him up for stalking her. Screech likely would be the winner in the long run of his class because he would be working in Silicon Valley and married to a trophy wife.

by Anonymousreply 145November 29, 2020 11:32 PM

R139 Unlike SBTB which seemed socially regressive for the 90s. The Brady Bunch had some progressive elements like the blended family aspect and implication that Carol was a divorcee. There some "feminist"-themed episodes too which don't seem that significant now but still something for its time. Jessie on SBTB was every negative stereotype of a rich white feminist while Kelly and Lisa were portrayed as vapid valley girls. I remember Marcia and Jan did have depth and multiple interests which were explored in episodes despite the parody versions of them from the 90s which simplified their characters to the pretty smug sister and the bitter ugly sister.

I miss the old Nick at Nite before all the shitty sitcoms you can see everywhere took over. But then again, you can pretty much find all the old Nick at Nite shows on DVD or streaming somewhere. But it was so much fun back in the late 80s- mid 90s, staying up all night to watch shows I'd never seen before. I totally got hooked on The Patty Duke Show. And I remember in 1992 when they added The Mary Tyler Moore Show, what a huge deal it was. They did a 5 night Mary-thon which was dusk to dawn MTM episodes. And in 1995, they showed a bunch of Sid and Marty Krofft shows.

Saved by the Bell originally (or throughout its entire run) aired on Saturday morning, so its target audience was very young--tweens and younger kids. The show was not written for teens in high school as portrayed by the original cast.

by Anonymousreply 154November 30, 2020 12:45 AM

SBTB really set the trend for the manufactured tweencoms of NBC, Nickelodeon and Disney Channel and now Netflix. Cast pretty teen actors to be idols with tons of merchandise and even a singing career and prioritize the marketing aspect over the storytelling and character development. Create these types of shows on a fast turn-around schedule. This is also done with tons of cartoons which act as extended toy commercials.

Stuff like Dobie Gillis, Patty Duke, The Partridge Family, Monkees, Gidget, Silver Spoons, Blossom, Clarissa, Growing Pains, Who's The Boss?, Full House, Boy Meets World and The Brady Bunch planted the seeds for that though they were more family-oriented than strictly kid-oriented. Though they all are aspirational and younger kids who watched these shows idolized the older teen characters.

by Anonymousreply 155November 30, 2020 1:10 AM

Thereā€™s a huge difference between something like [italic]The Monkees[/italic] and dreary and shittily written and acted shows like [italic]Whoā€™s the Boss[/italic] and [italic]Full House[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 156November 30, 2020 1:13 AM

R156 I actually think The Monkees is quite funny in an absurdist kind of way. The writers were stoned and/or dropping acid when scripting and directing it. Also an underrated band.

Who's The Boss? and Full House were awful shows but tolerable when you're 10 years old and Nickelodeon went off, so you're stuck with Nick at Nite.

Clarissa liked grunge and alternative music, had a PC she played games on and wanted to be a journalist. So that made her cooler than the Bayside cast of characters.

by Anonymousreply 157November 30, 2020 1:17 AM

[quote] This is also done with tons of cartoons which act as extended toy commercials.

Not every cartoon in the 1980s was a glorified toy commercial. The most successful ones were those where the merchandise followed actual real world demand for the thing they were merchandising. [italic]The Smurfs[/italic] and [italic]Garfield and Friends[/italic] were both based on comic strips. [italic]Alvin and the Chipmunks[/italic] was a reboot of a 60s cartoon. [italic]Muppet Babies[/italic] showed that Jim Henson could work within the boundaries of network TV without feeling like selling out. [italic]Gummi Bears[/italic] got Disney into the TV cartoon game after decades of resistance and proved to be more successful than that yearā€™s costly theatrical release [italic]The Black Cauldron[/italic]. [italic]Itā€™s Punky Brewster[/italic] only ran two years to the four it got as a live-action show but at least had an interesting mixed-race cast when that wasnā€™t common on Saturday morning cartoons. It also helped launch Butch Hartmanā€™s career. [italic]ALF[/italic] in animation gave the title character a backstory and actually showed the doomed planet of Melmac.

Even the glorified toy commercials still produced people who went on to bigger and better things.

by Anonymousreply 158November 30, 2020 1:24 AM

R157, speaking of 'Who's the Boss', it's set for a reboot with Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano. If Danny Pintauro doesn't want to come back (I believe someone said he's working as a vet tech these days), why not have his character become trans? Or black? Or a black tranny? Surely Judith Light will at least make a guest appearance, for old time's sake. The new black tranny character could do double duty as the new Mona. In fact, just name her "Mona" in honour of the late, great Katherine Helmond.

by Anonymousreply 159November 30, 2020 1:28 AM

R158 I agree, there are many cartoon gems from the 80s. Jem has enjoyed a cult following for having fleshed-out characters, backstory and world-building despite being initially created by Hasbro to be a marketing rival to Barbie. And the 80s Alvin & Chipmunks show actually fleshed out the characters and had a lot of meaningful episodes. The Raccoons also is considered an impressively written cartoon and revered by Canadians as a fine example of their animation industry. My favorite though is the Beetlejuice cartoon which has many elements I even prefer to the live-action original.

by Anonymousreply 160November 30, 2020 1:31 AM

Katherine Helmond was great in everything except that lousy show. Even when I was a kid, I hated it and I hated it even more after I finally got to see [italic]Soap[/italic] for the first time when it came out on videotape, which I loved and still do.

It wouldā€™ve been less of a comedown for her to play Cassieā€˜s sister on [italic]Webster[/italic] after Cathryn Damon got too sick to work. That show looks like a classic next to this piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 161November 30, 2020 1:33 AM

R159 I remember Who's The Boss? airing reruns on Nick at Nite and TV Land in the mid-2000s but it seemed to have disappeared from syndication afterwards. Like Growing Pains, Family Ties and Silver Spoons I doubt anyone under the age of 25 knows Who's The Boss? So the audience for this would be skewing older.

Unlike SBTB, Three's Company, Step by Step, Family Matters, Full House, Golden Girls, Married with Children, Cosby and even Cheers which have enjoyed a very very long time in syndication, a lot of other 80s/early 90s shows weren't in heavy syndication.

by Anonymousreply 162November 30, 2020 1:34 AM

Thatā€™s because VCRs made it possible for anybody who liked them enough to watch them more than once to tape them, and also TV stations wanted to put talkshows on instead.

by Anonymousreply 163November 30, 2020 1:35 AM

[italic]Family Ties[/italic] probably still has some cultural catchet considering Michael J Foxā€™s still famous because of the [italic]Back to the Future[/italic] trilogy and his work for Parkinsonā€™s disease charities. Unlike the others, that at least had better writing and acting. He deserved his Emmys for playing Alex P. Keaton because, much like Carroll Oā€™Connor and Archie Bunker, another actor could have turned the role into a completely irredeemable jerk.

by Anonymousreply 164November 30, 2020 1:43 AM

R163 Good point. It's always interesting to me which shows have legacies that last and which don't. Friends and Full House managed to become huge classics despite generally being considered serviceable sitcoms at best and it only seems to be because these shows are highly syndicated and have been for over 20 years. I remember Full House and Friends have been airing on many network TV stations as well as on multiple cable channels like Nick at Nite, ABC Family and TBS simultaneously. It's comparable to something like Scooby-Doo which has been syndicated for decades on multiple network TV and cable TV stations that it has been so ingrained in the US public consciousness that even people who didn't watch it knows the characters and their dynamic.

Other sitcoms from the 80s like Growing Pains, 227, Valerie/Hogan's Family (despite Jason Bateman being a huge actor and popular with young people), Too Close For Comfort and ALF are generally forgotten unless you're a TV buff fascinated by classic television or were old enough to still catch them in syndication.

by Anonymousreply 165November 30, 2020 1:45 AM

I predict The Office is probably going to end up in Friends/Full House/Seinfeld territory too of being an extremely mainstream syndicated show for decades. While 30 Rock will end up like Frasier and Parks & Rec like Cheers as shows that are syndicated but enjoyed by a more niche audience.

by Anonymousreply 166November 30, 2020 1:48 AM

ALF was good up until they added a new baby. Growing Pains was terrible from the get-go and just got worse after Kirk fucking Cameron turned into a goddamn Jesus freak. 227 started well but seem to unravel after they added new characters into the mix.

by Anonymousreply 167November 30, 2020 1:51 AM

Friends and Full House are not ā€œclassics.ā€œ They are the two worst television shows of any genre or any era. Period. And one is a rip-off of the other. Both are constantly foisted on the public because of white supremacy.

by Anonymousreply 168November 30, 2020 1:54 AM

Growing Pains is a painfully boring show but it did jumpstart Leonardo DiCaprio's career. Alan Thicke was a trooper too, he bashed Kirk publicly for his homophobia and his son Robin is a talented blue-eyed soul singer. Despite the show's vanilla-ness, it did have a catchy theme song.

R168 They lived in the "whitest" parts of NY and SF respectively and able to afford that big-ass housing too in areas that even back in the 1980s were still damn expensive. Friends was based off of Living Single (a black sitcom about young professionals living in NY which of course was never hugely popular due to being more about black culture and also airing on FOX, a baby network compared to NBC) and also Full House seemed to be based off Three Men and a Baby and My Two Dads.

by Anonymousreply 171November 30, 2020 1:58 AM

Didnā€™t the parents in Growing Pains suggest that Kirk might be in gay at one point or was that Home Improvement?

by Anonymousreply 172November 30, 2020 2:01 AM

R169: Alan Thickeā€™s best work was done behind the camera. In addition to his two iconic sitcom themes, wrote for Norman Learā€™s [italic]Fernwood 2Night[/italic] which is a very funny show. It used to piss me off when the Disney Channel would show [italic]Growing Pains[/italic] reruns because apparently all the actually good shows of that era were taken by other cable channels.

Dusty Springfield recorded the theme song and it is probably the worst song in her entire repertoire.

by Anonymousreply 173November 30, 2020 2:03 AM

Growing Pains was the white version of The Cosby Show. The difference was nobody on the show was distinctive because white yuppies are boring as hell. Kirk "Jesus Freak" Cameron was the best actor on it which isn't a good sign.

by Anonymousreply 174November 30, 2020 2:03 AM

If Jason Bateman finishes Ozarks. Maybe a Hogan Family reunion can happen. It seems the most forgotten of the 80s sitcoms despite it's catchy and very soothing theme song sung by the beautiful Roberta Flack. It also seems Full House ripped this off too.

by Anonymousreply 176November 30, 2020 2:08 AM

R173 I remember those Disney Channel reruns of Growing Pains. It's funny how they aligned themselves with a Jesus freak like Kirk. They also used to air reruns of Brotherly Love which I think was a pretty funny and underrated mid-90s sitcom starring the Lawrence bros. It helps Joey and Matt looked very beautiful. Like Teen Angel, Smart Guy and Sabrina, they weren't scared to put in adult-oriented jokes and old pop culture references.

A year or so before the Cosby scandal broke, I tried watching a Cosby Show re-run. It was unwatchable--the show had almost no plot. The characters seemed to wander in and out while Cliff mugged non-stop. I have no idea now why we all watched this show and thought it was great.

R176 Pam was added to add "street appeal" because The Cosby Show reflected the respectability politics of the 1980s that the racist Republican party wanted black people to behave as. But by the late 80s that ideal was outdated and more realistic stuff like Spike Lee films and the music of NWA, New Edition and Public Enemy was in. So Cosby decided to actually put in a black kid who acted like they grew up on the streets of NY with Pam. Also Olivia was added to be the cute little kid but it did launch Raven-Symone's career and she's such a great actress and singer that I can't complain about that.

They were the first sitcom with a Black family where the parents both worked non-domestic white-collar jobs. If it had not been them, it wouldā€™ve been someone else eventually. I wish it had been. Someone who didnā€™t rape a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 182November 30, 2020 2:15 AM

Bill Cosby was a liberal Democrat. I have never seen any evidence of him supporting any Republican candidates or causes. Just because white heterosexual conservative men agreed with his personal responsibility jive talk doesnā€™t make him a conservative.

by Anonymousreply 183November 30, 2020 2:18 AM

The Huxtable family was that aspirational model for black folks. They lived in Brooklyn Heights in this nice brownstone. They were upper middle-class, speak very eloquently, dressed very fashionable but still conservative, were a nuclear double-income family and had all their problems solved in an episode. It was basically a 1950s style type of sitcom but with black people. Cliff and Claire were graduates of HBCUs. They also featured jazz, blues and even rap and reggae musicians and artwork by black artists hung in the background. They were black and proud of it but they didn't talk about it or address racial issues. It seemed like a fantasy world because of the Reagan era's War on Drugs, the HIV crisis, gentrification, gang violence, police brutality and the race riots occurring at the same time. It didn't age well because it was a product of its time but most agree it was culturally important.

It's spin-off A Different World was much funnier and interesting. Though the first season sucked ass as Lisa Bonet has no acting ability and star power to carry a sitcom herself and Marisa Tomei was out of place. Luckily Debbie Allen came in and fixed the show and made it classic, season 2 onward.

by Anonymousreply 184November 30, 2020 2:22 AM

R183 I wasn't accusing Cosby of being a Republican though like many older black men he is a social conservative. I was just saying that The Cosby Show had to push a very clean and sanitized image of black people and idealized black family and avoided racial and social discussions. It was the Reagan era and social conservatives of the moral majority were very racist and blamed minorities and the poor aka "welfare queens". It wasn't necessarily his fault either, he was walking on eggshells even pitching the idea to NBC. The white sitcoms of the era also were idealized like Growing Pains, Family Ties, Who's The Boss?, Full House and Silver Spoons. That's why Roseanne and Married... with Children were refreshing and are even relatable to people of all races actually since they were just working class.

by Anonymousreply 185November 30, 2020 2:27 AM

[quote] It was basically a 1950s style type of sitcom but with black people.

I think thatā€™s a little reductive. For one thing, the mothers in 1950 sitcoms didnā€™t have jobs. For another thing, the kids didnā€™t have any friends outside their race.

by Anonymousreply 186November 30, 2020 2:33 AM

R186 I agree Claire would have been a homemaker. But if it was still set in NYC that's a possibility to still have mixed-race social groups. Maybe Hispanic, Irish, Jewish, Polish or Italian friends since Brooklyn was never predominately black but likely not WASPy friends.

R185: Even though the core family was incredibly white, [italic]Silver Spoons[/italic] had at four Black actors in regular or recurring roles (Leonard Lightfoot, Franklyn Seales, Alfonso Ribeiro, and Jo-Marie Payton) and had a Black co-creator/developer in Michael G. Moye. Someone years ago uploaded the whole series to YouTube and I found it most enjoyable. Certainly the casting of Joel Higgins kept the role of Edward Stratton III from becoming just another dumb sitcom dad.

Tony Danza was the exact opposite on his show. He canā€™t play anything other than a dumb mook, and he has to call line to remember his own name, so there is no point in even trying to write good material for him even though [italic]Taxi[/italic] at least tried. As a result, everything he plays reinforces the stupid white male stereotype. It is astonishing that Norman Lear let his standards sink so much so quickly. That the worst of these two shows is the one that got better ratings is more proof that either America is still as racist as ever or the Nielsens are rigged or both.

by Anonymousreply 189November 30, 2020 2:49 AM

[quote]I was just saying that The Cosby Show had to push a very clean and sanitized image of black people and idealized black family and avoided racial and social discussions.

It amuses me whenever people post this, because you can tell they never watched the show. Number one, they touched on class and racial issues a lot. They did shows on drug abuse, kids with bad home lives, teenage pregnancies'. They did an episode about Vanessa fighting with her friends over class status.

Number two, the kids were far from squeaky and innocent. Denise was a drifter who dropped out of college and had no sense of direction. Vanessa was always getting into all kinds of trouble like coming home drunk, and running off for the weekend to go to a concert. Sondra turned her back on her law degree so she could go run a wilderness store with Elvin. Theo was always bringing home bad grades until they found out he was dyslexic. The kids were generally a mess with the exception of Rudy and that's only because she was a little kid.

The show was more about moving away from generally negative stereotypes of African Americans that had been a staple of TV (poor people with broken families living in the ghetto, having no money and struggling to make ends meet.)

Yes, there was the Jeffersons, but the show always made mentioned of George's poor roots and that Louise and him came from dire circumstances to get to where they were. The Cosby's were about two upper middle class people who came from solid middle class backgrounds themselves. And yes, there are black people like that out there.

by Anonymousreply 190November 30, 2020 2:51 AM

R189 Oh yes, certainly Joel Higgins played the role with such intelligence and gravitas!

by Anonymousreply 191November 30, 2020 2:56 AM

Bill Cosby grew up the poor son of an alcoholic father in a Philadelphia ghetto. His real life trajectory is more like the Jeffersons than the Huxtables. Except that George Jefferson never raped a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 192November 30, 2020 2:56 AM

[quote][R189] Oh yes, certainly Joel Higgins played the role with such intelligence and gravitas!

With the material they gave him to work with he managed to make it work. He clearly had more acting experience than Erin Gray, but she was not miscast and they were at least believable as a couple. As a TV viewer, I can believe them together, but as a gay man, I object on moral grounds.

Now imagine Dick Christie (Ted Lawson on [italic]Small Wonder[/italic]) in that part; the father-son scenes would end up being REALLY awkward. The parents on that show seemed more like close friends than husband and wife.

by Anonymousreply 193November 30, 2020 3:26 AM

Saved By The Bell is on Sunday mornings on one of the classic TV channels. Decades, METV, Light, or Antenna.

I watch an occasional episode of the old shows. Who's the Boss, Hogan Family, Family Ties, Silver Spoons, Growing Pains, Dennis the Menace, etc.

There are the old Sci-fi shows as well; Star Trek, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, It's About Time,

And Cowboy shows: Bonanza, Rifleman, etc.

The CW is the least-viewed network compared to FOX, NBC, ABC and CBS. The CW caters to niche fanbases and has always kept their shows running longer than average because of that. They keep their shows running because they can't afford to lose any type of viewership which keeps them afloat. The WB and UPN also had lower viewerships too but also had too many shows they picked-up and cancelled which made them go over-budget and resulted in the merger. The CW is not repeating those mistakes. Think of The CW like Fox during it's early years.

by Anonymousreply 210November 30, 2020 10:27 PM

You are safe if you have a show in CBS.

by Anonymousreply 211November 30, 2020 10:33 PM

CBS is the "old people network". Older viewers are the most devoted of all demographics. They love familiarity. Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Two Broke Girls, Mom, etc etc are all very old-school type of sitcoms with obnoxious laugh tracks, childish characters, outdated gender stereotypes and racist jokes. Even the camera filming style they used looks antiquated.

Younger people moved on to single-camera sitcoms ushered in by shows like Malcolm in the Middle, The Bernie Mac Show, 30 Rock, The Office, Arrested Development, Parks and Recreation, Workaholics and Community.

Whenever anyone mentions "The Hogan Family" the theme song plays in my head on a loop for days. "We get closer, with happiness and tears/And in our hearts we share/The laughter and the sadness/A special kind of madness/Together through the years!". Cheese but it sticks.

Nick at Nite in the '80s was my favorite thing ever as a young teen, and it was because of the interstitial stuff. It really made it seem like you were watching something hip and interesting when really it was just the same reruns the indie channels were showing and nobody gave a crap about.

I think on the original season the school was supposed to be based in Indiana.

by Anonymousreply 215November 30, 2020 11:42 PM

Good Morning Miss Bliss was set in Indiana. When it was revamped as Saved By the Bell it was changed to California, and they changed the tone, made the teens the focus (Miss Bliss was the focus for the original show) and changed many of the cast mates.

They kept Zack, and made him the main character, kept Lisa and Screech and Mr Belding and cut the rest. They then created new characters. There were supposed to be 5 main teens, like in Miss Bliss, but they liked Berkeley so much (who auditioned for Kelly but they gave the part to Tiffani-Amber) they created Jessie specifically for her.

Yes during the Good Morning, Miss Bliss season which aired on Disney but was cancelled after one season and NBC picked it up and retooled it as Saved By The Bell. I remember TBS aired those episodes but with the SBTB opening theme. Belding, Lisa, Schreech and Zack were carried over from that series onto SBTB with the new characters Slater, Jessie and Kelly. They should have had Hayley Mills guest star as Miss Bliss on SBTB.

Mark-Paul was definitely very charismatic and would have gotten a show even if Miss Bliss wasn't picked up by NBC.

Freeform already had a lot of those old shows for years when it was called CBN. They also had westerns; the had [italic]Bonanza[/italic] for years and years and years.

I noticed that a lot of the shows Nick at Nite (and later TV Land) had were the same ones that TBS had just lost the rights to. Lucy, Andy, the Bradys, and most of the Norman Lear shows were on TBS before N@N/TVL took them.

The Disney Channel showed old [italic]Ozzie and Harriet[/italic] reruns for years after losing [italic]Still the Beaver[/italic] to TBS which also had the original. Ted Turner was willing to pay for both; Disney was not.

Freeform is still forced to air The 700 Club because of Pat Robertson. Disney tried everything to get rid of that contract and I'm sure Fox tried to too during the Fox Family era. It was rumored that ABC Family was forced to have "family" in the name because of a contract but that turned out to be false. They did eventually change it to "Freeform" because once they got rid of all the cartoons and the TGIF and 7th Heaven reruns and began airing stuff like Pretty Little Liars, there was nothing really family-oriented left about the channel.

The sarcastic disclaimers though are pretty funny.

I remember the episode were Slater finds out he's part Mexican and his dad changed the family name from Sanchez to Slater to further his career. I was so confused by that revelation because I thought Slater was always Hispanic from the get-go and everyone knew but didn't care. The actor's name was Mario Lopez and his appearance is very mestizo, not at all white-passing. I thought it was cool that Jessie and Slater were a mixed-race couple. Then there's some episode during the College Years where Slater is shamed by a Chicano girl for not embracing his heritage as much.

Despite Slater dating Kelly and Jessie. Viewers had a big issue with Zack and Lisa being a couple despite the fact MPG and Lark actually dated a long time behind the scenes and their onscreen chemistry was off the charts. Lisa always got the short end of the stick when it came to romance, no steady relationships at all despite being cute, charming, rich and fashionable. Apparently, the SBTB producers got a lot of angry letters from parents who objected to the episode of Zack and Lisa kissing and thinking of becoming a couple. I wish the producers stuck with their guns and did it to piss off the racists. But alas they stuck Zack with Kelly, the most generic and predictable ending ever.

Tori was added after Berkeley and Thiessen left the show. They had more episodes to film to fill the season, as Berkeley and Thiessen only filmed half a season, including the series finale ahead of time so they are a part of it. They then cast someone for Tori to film more episodes so they have the full season NBC ordered.

This is why Kelly and Jessie suddenly vanish without reason and Tori is now part of the gang and then on the finale Tori is missing and Kelly and Jessie are suddenly back.

[quote]The original was terrible and they found a way to make it worse. Yes, I was a child when it was on the air. Even then, it was stupid homophobic drivel produced by people allied with Pat fucking Robertson. Putting trannies on it only doubles the homophobia.

Screeching "homophobia" while using trans slurs. How very ... Republican of you.

Back here in the reality-based world, the original SBTB was "squeaky clean" because it was a fucking Saturday morning show aimed at elementary & middle school kids ā€“ it was intended to be a childish view of high school from *their* perspective. Yes, it's definitely fucked up that the producers still managed to sexualize the kids to such a degree, but OTOH that was the norm all around 30 years ago ā€“ as was having teen-show casts populated entirely by hot white people, with the occasional token exception (e.g. Slater).

The new show is not only NOT "homophobic drivel"; it's written & produced almost entirely by women (and mainly women of color). If our resident eldergays were being honest, they'd admit they hate it BECAUSE of that reason, which goes back to both self-loathing and irrational hatred of trans people. Since I'm apparently the only person under age 50 on DL these days, I guess I have to spell it out: the reboot reflects the modern-day realities of gender fluidity as well as orientation fluidity. No one's "gay" or "bi" because ACTUAL kids today often don't identify as such, simply because they don't like labels.

I don't like most reboots, and I never watched the original show aside from a handful of times, but this one is *legitimately* good. Fantastic writing all around, and it makes VERY clear how ridiculous ā€“ and ridiculously privileged ā€“ the OG cast was (and, in Zack & Kelly's case, still is). Yes, it shares a number of sensibilities in that respect with "Cobra Kai," except this show is considerably higher-profile. (As a reminder, "Cobra Kai" languished on the now-defunct YouTube Red for two years, where almost no one watched it. The show only got hot this year after Netflix acquired it & ordered a third season. Also, "Cobra Kai" was considerably lower budget, hence the rather ridiculous substitution of Atlanta for suburban L.A. and use of zero sets. (SBTB, meanwhile, has almost farcically expensive sets for a streaming network, but NBC went all out on both it and "Brave New World.")

Anyway, it's a genuinely good show, and the only real criticism I've seen of it is specific to focusing on a trans woman who "passes." In real life, trans women still have plainly masculine traits, and are shunned for it ā€“ based on the same bigotry gay men have faced for decades over being too "nelly." OTOH you could say the same thing about "Love, Simon," which has a teen gay character who also "passes." How many of you bitches dislike THAT movie?

[quote] Silver Spoons is so fucking 80s and actually funny. How is it not a meme? It even had Carlton Banks pre-Fresh Prince who also a teen dance star.

It gets rerun as often as they used to reissue Disney movies to theaters, and never on channels I actually get where I live at any given time since it was first in syndicated reruns which is where I first saw it. Every time Shout! Factory gets asked about why the rest of it isn't on DVD, in addition to whatever vague adjectives they use to rationalize why Sony gave up after 1 season with the tackiest cover imaginable, the standard excuse is "we can't afford the music rights." The only streaming sites that have it also just have season 1, and not even the same uncut versions the DVD set had! It got decent, but not spectacular ratings on Saturday nights pre-[italic]Golden Girls[/italic], but then NBC let it die on Sunday nights up against [italic]60 Minutes[/italic] where its ratings cratered; they never even tried [italic]Punky Brewster[/italic] on a different night. [italic]Punky[/italic] sold more DVD copies (and had Shout! supporting it from the get-go), but that show needed first-run syndication to even get reruns at all. [italic]Spoons[/italic] got one more season in syndication because the stations that reran it already been promised at least 100 episodes. Maybe girl-centric shows sell more DVDs than boy-centric ones.

With Alfonzo, though, I thought they wrote themselves into a corner with him with that dyslexia episode in a way [italic]Punky[/italic] didn't with Cherie and her grandma. Their intentions were good, but they recognized it is neither funny nor nice to mock people with a disability. That killed the potential for comedy with the character. It was easier for them to make a white guy "the dumb one" like J.T. used to be before he just faded into the background, so you started to see him pushed into the background in favor of Brad (Billy Jacoby), who in one episode actually wore a T-shirt saying "brain dead." I also suspect the influence of Coca-Cola made them not want them having a Pepsi spokesman so prominent on a show they just bought the production company of. That was a non-issue when Norman Lear still owned Embassy and "discovered" him in the Broadway cast of [italic]The Tap Dance Kid[/italic]. But I loved Dexter Stuffins and found it encouraging to see a Gay Black actor playing a businessman when Robert Guillaume and Nell Carter were still playing domestics and Bill Cosby was getting all the praise for his heterosexist classist pilpul.

WALLY: Yeah, but who'd watch us except old ladies and their gay neighbors?

EDDIE HASKELL III: Okay Cleavers, time for your "medication!" Heh heh heh!

BEAVER: Gosh, that medication looks awfully green and sticky.

WALLY: And it smells like those rock concerts I used to go to back in the early 1970s.

DEE: I'm sure I'll adjust to life somehow. Nadine has no breasts and she lives a full, active life. They even want her for a dirty movie!

NADINE: I'm not doing it, Raj. I'm not getting on a movie camera and showing another man my body.

RAJ: But how else are we gonna get the money?

DWAYNE: I could give you a personal loan.

RAJ: I couldn't ask a friend to loan me money. At least this way I'll finally have a screen credit to my name.

That show sucked, too, and its producers were homophobic crooks. Haim Saban is one of the biggest music thieves in the business.

by Anonymousreply 273December 1, 2020 3:45 PM

Saban underpaid those young Power Rangers actors. They had to work 6 days a week all year, only being allowed 2 or 3 weeks off a year and were paid like $650 a week or something. They also had to do conventions and meet and greets etc.

The reason Jason, Zack and Trini left was because they were all fired after demanding more money. They wouldnā€™t stop and boycotted, as the show canā€™t film without the 3 rangers, but that backfired and Saban just fired them, stitched random footage for a couple of episodes and shot new material around them, and hired 3 new actors instantly, Rocky, Adam and Aisha.

The only issue Saban gained from that was they had to rewrite the movie script with its new 3 characters and change some stuff, as the movie originally had the original crew and the story was a bit different with them.

by Anonymousreply 274December 1, 2020 3:53 PM

I remember about a decade ago the Pink Ranger did an interview where she spoke about how underpaid they were. Saban was bringing in hundreds of millions a year from Power Rangers, yet were paying the actors a few hundred a week.

Nope. [italic]Married With Children[/italic] made a joke about a show called [italic]Saved By The Bell: The Prison Years[/italic]. Then Dustin Diamond went to jail. Too bad the rest of the cast couldn't have joined him.

Holland Taylor was great on The College Years

by Anonymousreply 295December 2, 2020 1:40 AM

The original had a no homo vibe to it that made it unwatchable.

The new one is even worse because it still makes gays invisible while actively trying to erase gay men by saying we are not actually male. And they are not even waiting until the age of consent to do it.

by Anonymousreply 296December 2, 2020 1:47 AM

Omfg. The original started in the late 80s and ended in 1993. How much gay representation was on TV in general then, yet alone on a kids program?

by Anonymousreply 297December 2, 2020 1:52 AM

Zach and Slater clearly hooked up at some point in 1993. I know because I read it on Nifty once!

It's kind of strange that the first season was supposed to center around Miss Bliss. Did they think an audience of kids and teens would be interested in this middle-aged schoolteacher lady?

by Anonymousreply 302December 2, 2020 4:31 AM

Who doesnā€™t love Hayley Mills though?

by Anonymousreply 303December 2, 2020 4:33 AM

R303, I like her well enough, but my pre-aware-gayling self wasn't paying nearly as much attention to her as I was to Zack Morris.

by Anonymousreply 304December 2, 2020 4:35 AM

They should've cast Donna Pescow instead of that British tea bag. Did the same people who produced Good Morning Miss Bliss also produce The Undoing?

by Anonymousreply 308December 2, 2020 5:56 AM

[quote] Donna Pescow could not get out of Out of this World which overlapped with it.

Not necessarily. The pilot for Miss Bliss was shot in '87. I'm sure with her in the role, it would've been greenlit immediately and been on the 87-88 schedule and she would've have to turn down Out of This World.

by Anonymousreply 309December 2, 2020 1:47 PM

Even her name sounds like a religious reference.

by Anonymousreply 310December 2, 2020 3:11 PM

No kids wanna see a show about a middle aged single school teacher, and they didnā€™t, hence the show getting canned.

DIDNT they skip episodes and not air them originally to rush to the finale? Those episodes were debuted in syndication.

Then the Execs at NBC liked MPG as Zack Morris so much (as well as viewers) that they came up with the idea to revamp the series and have him as the star and drop the teacher and half the cast and air it on Saturday mornings, against cartoons. It worked and was the first of its kind, which is why itā€™s still so revered.

by Anonymousreply 311December 2, 2020 4:00 PM

If even a six-year-old could see why this show is stupid, why is it still on the air? Because it serves NBC's agenda to erase homosexuality.

[quote]Jessie on SBTB was every negative stereotype of a rich white feminist while Kelly and Lisa were portrayed as vapid valley girls.

Originally "Lisa" was supposed to be a "a fashion-obsessed, Jewish American princess, with rich doctor parents."

However, they ended up hiring Lark for the role because they just adored her.

Then Lisa Turtle was seen as progressive, especially in SBTB after Miss Bliss ended. There weren't many rich black girls on TV back then.

On one of the shows about the history of the series, they mentioned that the cost of her wardrobe in comparison to everyone else's was insane.

R338 Lisa was one of my favorite characters because despite being a bit shallow, she was at least funny and had good lines. Kelly was kinda boring but she was supposed to be the girl-next-door that the guys fought over. Tiffani is more interesting as Valerie on 90210. Jessie was annoying at times with her self-righteousness though she had her comical moments too like the caffeine pills episode.

R334 my favourite 90210 character šŸ˜

by Anonymousreply 342December 5, 2020 10:24 AM

They all were mean to Screech. Zack his "best friend" was a bully to him.

Lisa just wanted Screech to quit chasing her around which is completely understandable but he kept doing it hence she being rude to him. It's the same dynamic as Laura and Urkel from Family Matters and Jazz and Hillary from Fresh Prince. A lot of that male stalker humor doesn't age well.

by Anonymousreply 343December 5, 2020 10:47 AM

by Anonymousreply 348December 5, 2020 2:44 PM

Looking at the Gimme a Break clip at R328 , I forgot how annoying Samantha was. It might be worse than Cathy "Kitten" Anderson trying to play perpetually cute and precocious when she was too old and not a good actor to begin with. That aside, Gimme a Break and Mr. Belvedere probably had a more realistic view of teens than the other sitcoms of the era.

by Anonymousreply 349December 5, 2020 2:50 PM

I love this reboot. The sly tone and gentle mocking of the original was a solid choice by the writers. I have only two complaints that are entirely personal:

1) Mario Lopez is the most annoying no-talent ties I have ever witnessed. The show openly makes fun of how cheesy he is as a ā€œhot guyā€ . Heā€™s such a wiener.

2) I am not transphobic but Josie Totah is unequivocally the worst part of the show. She is very ugly, has a horrific nasal vocal quality, horrible fashion sense, horrible hair and trying to convince people sheā€™s the hot girl in a high school in Malibu? Uh, no. Sheā€™s such a bad actress they have to cut around her. She has no CLUE how to act like a hot girl and instead acts like a bitchy, femmey, gay man. Get her to an acting coach. STAT. And get her some vocal training.

Overall, I love it. I love the terrible childish storylines they shove up their own asses.

by Anonymousreply 350December 5, 2020 3:33 PM

[quote] I am not transphobic but Josie Totah is unequivocally the worst part of the show.

I didn't put two and two together and recognize her from Mindy Kailing's "Back in the Game." She has been acting a long time.

I also like the character, she reminds me of the Nicole Ritchie vapid type.

The strength of this show lies in the fact that it clearly knows what it is and recognizes how ridiculous and cheesy the original series was.

[quote]Was Screech too busy with his scat porn career to be in this?

Lark did a radio interview on Kiss92.5 and

[quote]"[With] Dustin Diamond, the almighty dollar rules on that," she alleged about his lack of participation to Toronto's KiSS 92.5. "He wants to be paid and respected. We would love for him to come back on set. He's going through his growing pains...He's going through his adult issues and all of that but I am sure he'll be backā€”granted they have the perfect contract for him. I'm sure he would be back."

In another interview the cast members said they haven't spoken to him since the show ended.

I imagine this is what Hilary Duff wanted the Lizzie McGuire sequel to be. This is similar to Cobra Kai and that recent Power Rangers movie. Has more mature humor and targeted towards millennials not young kids.

The main criticism of Girls Meets World and Raven's Home was that they were trying to target young kids instead of the now adult audience that grew up with it. But Full House was so juvenile though that Fuller House was not that jarring.

Maybe they'll make a sequel to California Dreams where they're jaded adults of a broken up one-hit-wonder band that went their separate ways. And decide to reunite to hilariously tragic results.

by Anonymousreply 367December 15, 2020 5:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 379January 24, 2021 2:48 PM

I wonder how much money the original cast made when the show originally aired. It wasn't a primetime show and maybe they made some extra money via the merchandising. There was the short lived College Years show that aired in primetime and I'm guessing there was a pay increase for the cast members who did that show.

I also remember a thread years ago on DL where a poster said that he or she worked at a bank in LA where Lark Voorhies banked at. The poster said it was common for Lark and her mother to be in the bank lobby arguing over withdrawing money. It came out years back that Lark has mental health issues. The mother claimed that Lark is bipolar. Lark denied it and said she suffered from depression. There was some drama and they appeared on Dr. Oz.

Some people with mental illness can't manage money well. My parents have a friend whose daughter is bipolar. She ended up giving custody of her kids to my parents' friend because she was overspending and been evicted from an apartment. I also had a co-worker who was managing her mentally ill brother's finances because he had to go on SSDI because it was recommended by doctors that he could no longer work.

by Anonymousreply 380January 24, 2021 4:44 PM

"Too scary," R274? WTF?? It's based on a literal children's show (that aired Saturday mornings), and the reboot is readily wholesome enough for teenagers to watch. (Well, assuming they don't have MAGAt parents triggered by the sight of a trans character. We know how fragile & snowflake-like those types are!)

Also, despite the longevity of the first show & its two sequels, I wouldn't even remotely assume Dustin Diamond ever had fuck-you money. Long-running shows are no guarantee of a hefty paycheck, which for the most part are limited to primetime sitcoms that even 30 years ago were routinely sold into syndication for nine-figure sums. This is how Jerry Seinfeld ended up with a $400 million windfall (circa 2000 but likely much larger today): as his show's creator & EP, he had an ownership stake in it. Ditto Bill Cosby, though I imagine he blew through a solid chunk of his take paying off the scores of women he raped.

Somewhat similar for marquee primetime network dramas, especially long-running and/or highly rated ones. DL fave Mariska Hargitay is now the highest-paid actor on any such show ā€“ meaning network, and not including shit like Nicole Kidman's or Reese Witherspoon's HBO series ā€“ with a paycheck of over $600K per episode. (Ellen Pompeo is a close second on per-episode paychecks, but makes more on whole because she managed to negotiate a piece of syndication / streaming profits for "Grey's Anatomy." AFAIK she's the only TV actor (on a network drama) who's EVER managed to get that, but OTOH she's the literal title character in one of the longest-running primetime dramas ever, excepting L&O and its spinoffs.)

by Anonymousreply 381January 24, 2021 5:36 PM
