Cher, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Bette Midler, AOC, Guilfoyle, etc. "Broads" are ballsy women who speak their minds, don't often apologize and don't care that they ruffle feathers and upset the status quo. There are lots of them, those are just a few that are the most well known.

Kirstie Alley, Cybill Shepherd, Sharon Gless, Tyne Daly, Betty Broderick, Melissa McCarthy, Conchata Ferrell...
"Slang sense of "woman" is by 1911, perhaps suggestive of broad hips, but it also might trace to American English abroadwife, word for a woman (often a slave) away from her husband. Earliest use of the slang word suggests immorality or coarse, low-class women. Because of this negative association, and the rise of women's athletics, the track and field broad jump (1863) was changed to the long jump c. 1967."
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 26, 2020 4:15 AM |
The word definitely has low-class origins, probably why I love it. I think the OG broad was Mae West. Best modern example: Liz Taylor. Post-modern example: Chelsea Handler. Another word for women that has negative origins but that I love because it also speaks to strength — battle axe.

Sharon Osborne. We need to define this word more. I would say to be a broad, not only must one not give a shit about how others see you, but also one must at times use provocation, if only for amusement. Many think a broad is just a strong woman, but she’s so much more. OG broads cursed, smoked, drank, slept around, this came out of the Roaring 20’s. Basically, a whore with a dirty mouth who could out drink the boys

Wow, what a bunch of terrible examples.
Jennifer Lawrence is a chick, not a broad.
Patti Lupone and Chelsea Handler are the only broads mentioned.
Angie Dickinson was probably a broad, but she's 90 years old.
Ethel Merman was a monster.
The rest of the old ladies mentioned here - from Bette Midler to Sharon Osbourne are just bitches. Broads like other women and have plenty of friends.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 26, 2020 6:44 AM |
The first one I think of is indeed Miss Angie Dickinson — someone who can hang out and knock em back with the guys but also someone the guys thinks is hot.
She’s NOT someone who is still doing “girls brunches” at the age of 40 and she’s not someone who goes on and on about being a “girls girl” and “women supporting other women” (while she gossips about them begins their back).
Broads aren’t into the cliques and the bullshit.

Broads are ballsy women with big tits and a distinctly sexual vibe, but also a bit of a lower class vibe. It's kind of an outdated concept. I wouldn't call anyone a broad these days. There are definitely characters played by some of the actresses mentioned who were good examples of broads. But I wouldn't say any of the actresses themselves are actually broads.

Jane Fonda is a dilettante, lock jaw, humorless, man dependent, lecturing, sex toy. She's far from a broad. She tries to act like one NOW that her sexual value is zero. She's bawdy? No. A Broad. Hell no. She's been subservient and defined by men her whole life. Not a bad actress.

Broad is a mid 20th century concept that happened somewhere between women getting the right to vote and the right to successfully sue for discrimination on the basis of sex (as it was called in the 1970s.) A broad was a lower class woman who has to make her own way in the world and was consequently tough and aggressive in ways that were considered unladylike. Joan Crawford and Susan Hayward specialized in broads. Bette Midler calling herself a broad was a retro affectation like singing “Lullaby of Broadway” or wearing sweetheart necklines. It was actually, as documented in “Gypsy,” a very rude thing to call someone.
