My husband. He’s a big fan of cafeteria food. When he likes a restaurant he says, “The food is really good. Like cafeteria food.” I’ve tasted his mothers cooking. It’s flavorless. No wonder he likes cafeteria food.
I would say “I feel like having something sweet” and he’d say, “There are Chips Ahoy in the cabinet.” And I’d say “Are you kidding me? They taste like nothing. Why waste the fat & calories? They’re only good for scraping your tongue.”

I remember a night, sometime in 1969, when I had seized the bag of Chips Ahoy cookies and fled out of the kitchen and into the backyard, pursued by three of my cousins, who were trying to get them from me, and by my dog, who was just loving the excitement, and was chasing us all around. I was five years old. I ran like a lunatic, dodging back and forth, barefoot in the grass, and all the while cramming cookies into my mouth. When they finally caught me the bag was empty except for crumbs (a 𝑙𝑜𝑡 of crumbs; the cookies hadn't really survived the tussle intact).
Chips Ahoy was quite different back then. The cookies were larger and tastier; I don't particularly recognize what they pass off at Chips Ahoy these days.

The #1 best packaged chocolate chip cookies I've had were by a Canadian (I think) brand called President's Choice. For several years, Jewel grocery stores in Chicago sold them as their upscale house brand. Then another company bought out Jewel, and that was the end of President's Choice around here.

In the States, Tate's is where it's at... Aldi has Benton's Chocolate Chip Cookie Thins that taste identical to Tate's. I’m always taken aback when I hear about gays shopping at Walmart, how do they not know better?
by Anonymous | reply 99 | October 24, 2020 7:04 AM |
R99 Not all gays lives in areas with lots of shopping options. I don't shop there all the time, but the local grocer have significantly higher prices and less products to choose from. For me, it's either Walmart, the aforementioned local grocer, Family Dollar and Dollar General (limited grocery items there too. plus no produce).
There are a lot of things I don't think about Walmart, the family that owns it and the way they run things, but sometimes you don't have much choice.
A lot of people (including gays) still use Amazon, and they aren't much better than Walmart, in several respects.

I don't really want to waste calories on Chips Ahoy, though Oreos have a certain charm.
What I do these days is go to costco and buy a box of their frozen CCCs. (the same ones they have in the clam shells in the bakery). Then I can just put one or two in the toaster oven and have some fresh baked cookies. They're not the same as homemade (not buttery) but they're better than anything else and at under 20c/cookie are crazy cheap.

The election makes me want to stress eat. But I won't stoop to Chips Ahoy. Those are for Trump supporters.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | November 4, 2020 12:18 PM |
I'm going to guess it's a nostalgia thing OP. I'm an immigrant and after seeing commercials for them years ago I was excited to try them, and they're bloody awful.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | November 4, 2020 12:28 PM |
They’ve probably been cutting corners on the ingredients since you were a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | November 4, 2020 6:00 PM |
The nostalgia is real with these. They either used to be much better or we didn't know any better.

This made me lol when I read it last night. In the midst of mayhem in the executive branch, DL goes on as usual. Thanks OP.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | November 4, 2020 7:22 PM |
R146, DL is one of the few sites I can go to get away from all the election-induced stress. (I just skip over the posts I know will make me anxious about the outcome.) So bring on the cookie debates, the naked hot guys analysis, the "dead celebrities who aren't really dead but in hiding" posts, etc.

[quote] the "dead celebrities who aren't really dead but in hiding" posts,
That’s just stupid. Everyone knows there’s no such thing.
Well, except for Elvis. I mean, we ALL know he’s on that island. But other than that, it’s just silly.

I thought that Amelia Earhart would have come out of hiding by this time, now that she's 123 years old.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | November 5, 2020 7:31 PM |
I liked Chips Ahoy when I was a teenager. So stupid because my mom made homemade cookies (incl. chocolate chip) that were so much better. The novelty of Chips Ahoy was appealing to me. I also remember being fascinated by the Kraft single slices of cheese wrapped in cellophane (neighbor's house). You guys can laugh, but I didn't grow up with that kind of stuff and thought it was interesting.

Nah, r149. She’s doing the right thing.
The Airplane Industrial Complex is still after her. She’s smart.

R151 thank you for

[quote]Now Oreos come in all these atrocious flavors
Came here to recommend Carrot Cake Oreos (over the sawdust and sugar concoction known as Chips Ahoy). I sprinkle garlic powder on the cream centers.
I used to like Tate's, but now they taste overprocessed like Chips Ahoy- no bueno!

Weird coincidence. I started following this thread yesterday, and today when I went to my local grocery store, there was this huge promotional display for Chips Ahoy! Are October/November Chips Ahoy months??
by Anonymous | reply 155 | November 6, 2020 8:31 PM |
Chips Ahoy cookies are NOT vegan R94. Your friend reminds me of vegetarians who cheat with bacon and hot dogs.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | November 6, 2020 9:58 PM |
Amen R141. Have you ever looked at the center of those after taking a bite? It is a disgusting gelatinous mess that doesn't even look like food. Yuck!!
by Anonymous | reply 157 | November 6, 2020 10:02 PM |
They’re onto you, r155!
They know you read Datalounge and have infiltrated!!
by Anonymous | reply 158 | November 6, 2020 11:39 PM |
I make cookies fairly regularly - I think because I've done it so often it isn't difficult. Having a Kitchen Aid Mixmaster and double wall ovens is a big help.

R158, crap. I had better hide (my stash of Chips Ahoy). :)

The Washington Post ranks Chips Ahoy #3 in a taste test.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | December 6, 2020 4:22 AM |
It's okay. What I don't like is soft cookie, it is gross.

Believe it or not, OP, there are millions of people out here in Amurica, who don't shop at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. They go to their local supermarket and buy Chip Ahoy, and boxed cereals loaded with sugar, and processed cheese slices and white bread, and frozen pizzas and hot pockets, and huge bags of Doritos and BBQ Potato Chips and gallons of soda and sweetened "energy " drinks. They barely have a passing acquaintance with green vegetables and don't know what fibre is. These people love Chip Ahoy. They love pop tarts too.

As if Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are the only places that sell fruits and vegetables. Both sell just as much processed junk as any other grocery store. And the processed junk is actually what Datalounge's Trader Joe's fans rave about. If you ask me Trader Joes is horribly over rated. Americans are eating a lot of junk and getting fatter, regardless of where they shop.

I've wanted to make this topic about Chips Ahoy FOR YEARS and never got around it. They're fucking horrible! Even by grocery store cookie standards they're bad. Bland, flavorless, dull texture and nothing even remotely resembling something homemade.
I remember the stories on these boards about how (the equally bad) Famous Amos cookies tasted better at one point before the recipes was cheapened & changed several times. Eldergays, did Chips Ahoy taste different/better at one point as well?

Lately, I've chanced upon the CVS generic "Gold Emblem" brand's packaged small chewy/soft chocolate chip cookies. Yes, when you roll back the opening they kind of smell like horseshit, but actually they taste pretty good and are just enough of a bake-y and chocolately treat especially on a cold winter night. I detest Chips Overboard and their thin, hard, sharp, explosively splintering and dry chip cookies!

After you've explained that they smell like horseshit. Most people probably tune out.
