berets or boinas are not french, the english associated them with french people but they are actually from spain. french people perhaps made them fashionable but boinas are not french.

I was in Rome a couple of weeks ago, and saw one very elderly man wearing a beret. He looked shabby elegant. I don’t think it’s an easy style to pull off. Younger men would look affected.
