WHET Beth Raines?

Judi Evans is interviewed on the latest Soap Opera Digest podcast and she speaks warmly about her time on GL.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 20, 2020 2:16 PM |
She is a 4 time divorcee and is now shacked up with Bradly Raines who fucks her regularly while her mother watches.

Reminder today is Locher ROom with Judi Evans and Vincent Irrizary

Did Vinnie ever eat out Judi? He fucked all his female co-stars. He’s got a big dick.

Don't miss the ATWT benefit staged reading of the final episode on Wednesday, October 28th at 8 p.m. in The Locher Room.

Nancy was a scat queen. She loved a little back door. One cup. Nancy and Ellen. Hot.

Thanksgiving is in a week. Is the clip still online of the very tense, intense Thanksgiving scene where abusive Bradley (played by James Rebhorn) menaces his family except Beth was having none of it. That mashed potato scene was never going to end well but it was such a great scene. Somebody should post it next week in honor of Saint Beth of Raines.

Watching the Locher Room Beverlee McKinsey tribute. He's been doing these for seven months now. He still hasn't learned to direct his question to a specific individual so they all don't talk over each other. "Do you all remember the first time you worked with Beverlee?"
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 19, 2020 6:50 PM |
He needs to have Eileen Fulton on STAT. Put her on with Colleen.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 19, 2020 7:08 PM |
He's incapable of leading a conversation. The idea that he could turn this into a permanent gig is probably his goal, but he has no skills whatsoever for it.

Fulton is in no mental condition to be doing a Locker Room.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 19, 2020 9:13 PM |

I’d rather read a book about Marj

Billie Eilish father played Beth Raines LOVER on Guiding Light
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 20, 2020 5:48 PM |

R34 Beth & Mindy friendship sort of broke up when Mindy was pregnant with Phillip child
By the time Phillip and Mindy divorced, Beth had moved on with Lujack and Beth & Mindy were in different storyline and barely interacted
But when Pam Long came back she resurrected the "four musketeers" and Mindy & Beth were played by different actresses

When they broke up Beth and Phillip to pair her with Lujack, they essentially broke up the Four Musketeers.
Beth had little interaction with Mindy or Rick for the last two years of Judi's run.

by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 21, 2020 2:10 PM |
It's obviously not uncommon for actors to fall in love with costars, but it was rather strange that Vincent did it with almost every female costar he ever had. I believe Judi was the only one he DIDN'T have a thing for or with! I mean, if I am not mistaken he had a thing with all three of the Mindys he played against. WIth Signy Coleman on Santa Barbara, too.

According to SOD, 11/28/1983 was the first airdate for both Zimmer and Vincent Irizarry. I thought he came on much later but I guess not!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 21, 2020 9:48 PM |
Sometime in the mid 90s, Vince has said he was going through a dark period of his life and that's when he found Jesus and started attending a Bible study.
I suspect that was in 1995 when his relationship with Barbara Crampton (Mindy #4) was falling apart yet he still had to work with her. GL was in bad shape during that time too both on screen and off screen.
His performances really seemed to suffer during this period. He just seemed to have lost his spark, his mojo. I was not really surprised the show wrote off Nick in Feb. 1996.
When he showed up on AMC in 1997, he had a different energy, seemed like a different person. I assume he had found Jesus by that point.

[quote] His performances really seemed to suffer during this period. He just seemed to have lost his spark, his mojo. I was not really surprised the show wrote off Nick in Feb. 1996.
It was around that time (in 1995) they fired Jill Farren Phelps and switched headwriters (bringing in Megan McTavish) and suddenly Vince was on the backburner, and became a supporting player in the Brent/Marian storyline (as his fiancee Nancy Bell was suspicious of Marian)
He was just unsatisfied how his character was being written and it was a mutual decision between him and the new producer to let the character rest,

by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 23, 2020 1:45 PM |
r54, I don't even recognize the woman in the scene. Who is she?
The Chelsea Reardon character was very forgettable. Apparently so were the people in her orbit.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 23, 2020 5:23 PM |
R59 That was Rae Rooney.
This was the C or D story on GL circa 1988-1989. There were a few female character, Rae Rooney and Dana, involved with Chelsea, Frank and Johnny.
Dana may have been the first attempt to bring back Beth, but they changed the story to have Dana imitating Beth with Alan's backing, trying to scam Phillip. She was eventually forgiven and ended up dating Frank.
Rae Rooney worked with Chelsea at the TV station, I think? Or Dana did? I think Rae was a comedian. Long story short, Chelsea had a stalker, everyone thought it was Dana but then Dana herself was killed, and it was revealed to be Rae, who was, like, super jealous of Chelsea.
Then the audience died, of boredom.
Most of Pam's stuff worked but this mess didn't, and neither did Rusty's wife Rose, who was as exciting as a wet paper towel.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 23, 2020 5:34 PM |
Thanks r60. The Rae character sounds vaguely familiar. Vaguely.
The only reason I even remember Rusty's wife Rose (yawn) was because she was played by Alexandra Neil, who had done such a fabulous job playing Ruby Wright on Texas.
Its just reminder that Pam could write some clunkers too. And also create some dull characters.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 23, 2020 5:44 PM |
At the start of her career, Barbara Garrick played one of Pam's forgettable characters in a C storyline. I think the character was named Charlotte.
Barabara Garrick is a character actress perhaps best known for playing DeDe Halcyon in the Tales of the City mini-series. Soap fans may also recall her very memorable turn as Allison Perkins on OLTL, She was one of cult leader Mitch Laurence's followers. "Ask Mitch, Ask Mitch, Ask Mitch"
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 23, 2020 5:54 PM |
R62 Yes! I loved Garrick in Tales as Dee Dee. But she played essentially the same character on GL and OLTL - twisted villain.
Charlotte Wheaton was a nurse who...somehow wanted revenge on Ed, for reasons I don't remember.
This was when Original Recipe Maureen was opposite Brand New Sexy Ed. (Who was about as well loved as Brand New Sexy Donna.)
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 23, 2020 6:06 PM |
R62 Oh....and I don't think this was Pam? I think that the point between Pam's two stints. This was when GL was really terrible. The Infinity storyline, Sampson Girl, et al.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 23, 2020 6:10 PM |
Oh, well that further explains why I don't remember the Charlotte character. I've blocked out most of Richard Van Vlett's run as Ed.
And yes, you're right. r63, Brand New Sexy Ed went over about as well as Brand New Sexy Donna.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 23, 2020 6:11 PM |
I was frustrated that when Alexandra was trying to explain to Nick who Lujack was. Alexandra could have pulled the Out in the Streets video out and SHOWN Nick who Lujack was.
Instead, Alex never even mentioned the video. Guess the show didn't want to pay for the music rights to song again.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | November 23, 2020 6:23 PM |
R64 Infiinty and Sampson Girl was under Pam's tenure. Both were summer of 1985.
Pam went on maternity leave in Jan 1986, but her longterm story continued playing out. When she got off maternity leave, P&G asked her to HW Search for Tomorrow, in a last ditch effort to save that show.
She returned to HW GL in late summer 1987. She's the one who introduced Harley Davidson Cooper.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 23, 2020 7:01 PM |
Some of you have incredible memories!
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 23, 2020 7:06 PM |
Pam’s last clunker her first go around at GL was introducing Cain, as played by Jerry Lanning. Weird story.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | November 23, 2020 7:07 PM |
I always think those two weren't Pam, R68. It certainly didn't ring true to her style. Must have been network interference.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | November 23, 2020 10:57 PM |
We've discussed this several times before. Jeff Ryder became Pam's co-headwriter in early 1985. And when she left on maternity leave in late Dec 1985/early Jan 1986, Ryder took over as the only HW. But he only lasted 6 months as the sole HW. He was replaced by Mary Ryan Munisteri & Ellen Barrett who did an even worse job than he did.
I suspect the dud storylines in 1985 that have Pam's name attached to them were actually Ryders. I'm talking about the very-Un-Pam-like storylines like Infinity, like the Sampson Girl and like the Jackson Freemont record producer storyline. Either that or it was network interference insisting the show try to imitate GH and its outlandish storylines more.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 23, 2020 11:25 PM |
I didn't even remember Garrick on ATWT. She seemed to be typecast in daytime.
That fine ass Nick Kokotakis was also in that episode.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | November 24, 2020 1:39 AM |
This was discussed on another thread but Susie Pratt really talked trash about Richard Van Vleet and what a diva he was at GL. Jay Hammer confirmed.
I hated this period of GL. When they were trying to be General Hospital. But I guess who wasn't right? It was a hot mess.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 24, 2020 3:46 PM |
Van Vleet was sort of cute and he might have worked if he was a recast of a character more like Ross, but he sucked raw sewage as Ed.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | November 30, 2020 8:22 PM |
R84 What a fucking shame. It won’t beat its combined radio plus tv time. Thing is, GH’s ratings have sucked for a decade yet ABC kept it afloat only because of the heyday of L & L.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | November 30, 2020 10:51 PM |

I realize that as a P&G fan the other shows were never much my cup of tea but I am mystified how B&B is so popular. It is so deeply terrible and repetitive. I can't believe Mulcahey wrote for them as long as they did.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 2, 2020 10:25 PM |
B&B was/is shit. It is depressing how this badly acted, stupid show gained in the ratings. I guess it played out more like what most people think of as soap opera- bad acting, bad writing, ridiculous and high glam. All surface level.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 2, 2020 11:20 PM |
I think if Mulcahey more as a dialogue writer than someone who plots the show. He does well writing scripts for campy stories and characters because his dialogue elevates these cartoons., especially when he has a strong actor like Susan Flannery reading his words.
That’s why his work on Santa Barbara was lauded, his scripts made you overlook the plot holes and lack of cohesive storyline direction. If Mulcahey hadn’t written Santa Barbara it would have been considered garbage.

I think 30 min shows are great but it has literally no redeeming value
by Anonymous | reply 98 | December 3, 2020 12:25 AM |
I bet it was shocking when Beth left and was assumed dead in ‘86. They lost some popular characters in a short time. No wonder GL was in dire straits during that year.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 3, 2020 12:48 PM |
As respected as Mulcahey is in the industry, he's only served as a HW once. That was on GL under JFP in 1994. He was one of five people listed as HW.
We all know how bad a year 1994 was for GL. After coming off the glorious 1990-93 renaissance, the show was brutally bad.
Anyway, apparently Mulcahey was turned off by the experience too since he's never taken another HW gig.

The Eminem song comes up
That is how few episodes of those two soaps are now on YouTube

R100 Mulcahey wasn’t headwriter material. Dialogue writer, yes, but never headwriter. There are so many longtime daytime writers who are not and never will be headwriters because they lack what it takes. Just because Janice Ferri Esser wrote for Y&R for a long time doesn’t mean she should be headwriter. Mulcahey is a perfect example of someone who was an excellent dialogue writer but piss poor headwriter. They are different talents. Mulcahey sucked in his only (thankfully) gig as headwriter but he wrote great dialogue.

OMG - well they said it wouldn't happen - but it is HAPPENING
There will be a 4 Musketeers Reunion on the Locher Room - sort of
Past cast members of Guiding Light will be part of a fund-raiser for food banks all over the USA - and among those scheduled to appear
Grant Alexander, Michael O'Leary, Krista Tesreau and Judi Evans
But there is NO guarantee that the four of them will appear together - they will joining a ton of other Guiding Light actors (list below)
The last time they had a big reunion like this, Alan Locher staggered the appearances, so groups of 4 appeared for 20 minutes, then another group of 4 came on
Whether Grant Alexander, Michael O'Leary, Krista Tesreau and Judi Evans will be one of the groups of four, remains to be seen
Full list of GL stars to participate below
Grant Aleksander (ex-Phillip), Laura Bell Bundy (ex-Marah), Bryan Buffinton (ex-Bill), Jean Carol (ex-Nadine), Beth Chamberlin (ex-Beth), Crystal Chappell (ex-Olivia), Kassie DePaiva (ex-Chelsea), Frank Dicopoulos (ex-Frank), Beth Ehlers (ex-Harley), Morgan Englund (ex-Dylan), Judi Evans (Bonnie, DAYS; ex-Beth), Jamie Goodwin (ex-Johnny), Melissa Hayden (ex-Bridget), Liz Keifer (ex-Blake), Jessica Leccia (ex-Natalia), Joy Lenz (ex-Michelle), Rachel Miner (ex-Michelle), Michael O’Leary (ex-Rick), Robert Newman (ex-Josh), Peter Simon (ex-Ed), Tina Sloan (Lillian), Paul Anthony Stewart (ex-Danny), Krista Tesreau (ex-Mindy), Jerry verDorn (ex-Ross), Yvonna Kopacz-Wright (ex-Mel) and Kim Zimmer (ex-Reva).

I loved these in the beginning but I have to say, the thrill is gone. The list of names above is almost exactly the same as (a) everyone who's been on and (b) everyone who was on the last fundraiser that Shawn Christian and Ariane Zucker did.
Get us John Wesley Shipp, Lisa Brown or Mary Kay Adams and we might get excited. Or aim for Melina Whatsersnatch, or Michelle Forbes.
It won't happen, though, because it's become clear Alan Locher is only talking to or working with his own friends.

Has Greg Beecroft refused to do a Locher Room? What about Marsha Clark? Kathleen Cullen? Stephen Yates? Tom Nielsen? Carolyn Ann Clark? Rebecca Hollen? Mark Pinter? Kristen Vigard? Jennifer Cooke? Lenore Kasdorf? Mart Hulswit? Janet Grey?
There are MANY GL alum who have not done a Locher Room, especially from the Marland era.
I realize Alan Locher is primarily calling on people he already knows through his job as head of PR at P&G. But surely he can get referrals to some of these people who he hasn't interviewed.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | December 10, 2020 2:16 AM |
R146 At first I thought perhaps he was getting the people he knew first, which makes sense.

R145 Yes, and I respect that. I just used her name as an illustration of "show us someone we haven't seen before."

Locher has a "Ryan's Hope" reunion tomorrow
In terms of trying to get people from the 1970s, early 80s - many of these people have aged. I was watching an 1980 episode of Another World and the guy who played Rick Halloway was cute back in the day., Googling him today, he now weighs 300 pounds!
So I'm just saying some of these old time actors are not rushing to walk down memory lane, because they are vain like the rest of us. I think many of them would prefer their fans to remember how they looked back in the day and not now.
I think that is the main reason why Lisa Brown refuses to go on the Locher Room. I think her appearance has changed so much, she would prefer people NOT to see what she looks like now.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | December 10, 2020 4:51 AM |
I would really like the 4 Musketeers to reunite and add Beth C in at the end. It is funny Judi did admit in her last Locher Room chat that she watched Beth C when she played Lorelei. That is a time Judi would have wanted to play Beth again. I find it hard to believe she didn’t tune in when Beth came back from the dead in ‘89. She originated the role so why not want to watch how that played out. Pam Long wrote one of the best back from the dead stories with Beth (and Roger).

No denying actors who appeared on soaps 35+ years ago may be reluctant to talk.
Some may have aged badly. Some may have memory issues. Some may have health issues (like Michael Tylo's constant shaking during his time in the Locher Room). Some may be technologically challenged and can't figure out Zoom.
But that's not to say every actor from that era doesn't want to talk. Both Denice Pence and Elvera Roussel were happy to talk. I'm just not getting the impression he's really trying to hard to book people from that era.
And lord knows, he hasn't done much with AW reunions. And there are certainly plenty of AW actors from the 80s and 90s still available to talk to. Not to mention the 70s AW stars like Bev Penberthy, Susan Sullivan, Nicholas Coaster, Gail Brown, Robert Gentry, even Robin Strasser.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | December 10, 2020 5:20 AM |
I can understand the reluctance to talk to someone like Strasser. Robin is.....a handful. She's like Vicky Rowell, where you have the feeling that she has many valid points, but yet there's a little bit of cray cray that peeks out, and you would NEVER know what they'd say. Fun for an audience but I can see someone like Alan L not wanting to engage with that.
But almost all the other sessions have been so innocuous - the spiciest it gets is....well, example the Ellen Dolan and Scott Holmes session, where they expressed (mostly respectfully) how not happy they were at the end.
So I don't understand the fear.
R150 The only thing I can think with a number of those folks is that they may not be skilled enough w Zoom to do such a thing.

by Anonymous | reply 152 | December 10, 2020 2:11 PM |
I never really liked her character on ATWT - Ellen Stewart was a "dishrag" character to me, boring and mousy.
But I actually think Pat Bruder would make for a very interesting interview. She seems to be a smart person and she worked there a long time, so she'd have a lot of interesting things to say about early ATWT and the various changes up to and through the end of Marland's era.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | December 10, 2020 2:20 PM |
Alan Locher is coming for a PR perspective as far as Robin Strasser goes. Since you don't know what to expect, don't give it occassion to happen.
From a reporters perspective, and from a viewers perspective, having Robin Strasser on would be fabulous.
Remember Alan tries really hard to control everything discussed. In an early session with some OLTL people, I recall he gave them on-air instructions at the start of the session about subjects not to discuss. That's something he would do as a PR agent, not as a reporter.

by Anonymous | reply 157 | December 11, 2020 12:41 PM |
Lisa Brown has not done it. I don't know for sure, but based on what we've talked about with Alan wanting everyone to stay more positive, Lisa is probably not interested in appearing if she has to be all fakey smiley about her experience.
John Wesley Shipp said he would gladly appear but Locher never asked him. He only asks people he knows or can control.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | December 11, 2020 2:28 PM |
In terms of Robin Strasser - she hasn't done ANY Zoom Soap Interviews, so that says something that Erika Slezak has done more Zoom interviews than Strasser. So it is not a snub, but maybe Strasser is not interested - yet to do one
Some of the Soap channels have held off having a "Cramer" family reunion, because they are waiting for Strasser to say yes or no. And so far, she has been noncommittal, still in stages of "thinking about it"
In terms of Another World - I know for a fact Locher has tried really hard to more of those. The fact is it is hard to track down the old stars from the 1970s & 80s from Another World. Right now he is trying to arrange one from the 90s, but two of the people he has approached haven't gotten back to him. Then the time difference because unlike other former cast-members of ATWT or GL, former cast members of AW are scattered all over the country, so to get four together at the same time, is quite difficult.
So he has made the effort, but it has either been a lack of enthusiasm from former AW stars, to problems tracking them down.
and just record NO - I am NOT Alan Locher. I have been in touch with him constantly pitching AW Zoom Reunion ideas, but really there has been a lack of interest from former actors on that show.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | December 11, 2020 4:47 PM |
[quote] been a lack of enthusiasm from former AW stars
I'd just like to add that unlike GL & ATWT which (for the most part) had a great family feeling behind the scenes, the AW backstage did not have the same "family feeling" - there was much more backstage strife, firings, executive power struggles
That show was constantly on the chopping block, people were always on the edge. So it is not surprising that it would be hard to find former cast members wanting to go down memory lane.
Yes it was for the most part a family, but it was more dysfuntional than GL & ATWT, because of the constant inconsistency on how the show was run
by Anonymous | reply 160 | December 11, 2020 4:54 PM |
Why doesn't someone do a Zoom seance with dead soap stars?
by Anonymous | reply 161 | December 11, 2020 4:58 PM |
R160 and to be fair AW was so wildly inconsistent in its last decade plus. Despite the cuts to ATWT and GL there was still a core of the same people. That core was smaller at AW.
Wyndham seems to maybe not have been terribly loved on set.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | December 11, 2020 6:28 PM |
I get the impression that after Harding Lemay’s departure Rachel was just a job to Victoria Wyndham, that she probably would have quit in the 70s if she didn’t have kids to support.
I think she also was embittered by trying to offer suggestions on how to improve the show in the 90s, and was ignored.
Who would want to go down memory lane about a job that ended over 20 years ago?
by Anonymous | reply 163 | December 11, 2020 6:52 PM |
[quote]Who would want to go down memory lane about a job that ended over 20 years ago?
Clearly some people are since he has had a few AW reunions.
Similarly, Denise Pence, Elvera Roussel and Michael Tylo have all been gone from GL for over 35 years, yet they were happy to talk about their time on that job.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | December 11, 2020 7:01 PM |
Locher doesn’t like controversy. He’s a wimp. He’s Queen Michael Fairman lite. Fairman gets bigger names. Locher has no variety to his questions. Queen Fairman is better overall by far. And I don’t even like Queen Fairman.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | December 11, 2020 7:19 PM |
[quote] Fairman gets bigger names.
The only name he got from Another World is Anne Heche, and that was to promote Dancing with the Stars
Fairman is more ABC (and even he can't land Robin Strasser)
While Locher is more P&G
So if you are a fan of ATWT, GL or AW - Fairman video are slim to none in terms of those shows.

Yes but it was very short - Grant Alexander had technical issues, so he missed half of the time allotted for the segment as he had to sign-out and sign-in again
By the time Grant got back on, he only had a few minutes before Locher introduced Beth Chamberlain & Tina Sloan back in the segment
And Judi really didn't have much to say. Plus Grant & Judi didn't interact at all, despite being on the same screen together. Which leads me to believe about the tension between Judi & Grant, but Judi did this reunion for charity
That is my take

I always thought the riff between Judi and the other 3 was just idle gossip until I saw it first hand. That was painfully uncomfortable to watch. She and Grant never even acknowledged each other. Krista said hi to Judi and Judi said an awkward hello. When Beth Chamberlin and Tina Sloan came on things got a bit better but on the whole it was really hard to watch. I am not sure what exactly is wrong with Judi. She doesn't seem right. Maybe she is still ill. She had way too much make up on.
My favorites though were the segments with Paul, Nancy and Bethanny and the Bauer segment at the beginning. I also loved the Reardon one and hope he does an hour with them but with no Lisa Brown it might be difficult.

But after seeing that video, clearly there is SOMETHING there.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | December 21, 2020 3:32 PM |
I'm thinking Judi did this reunion to get it over with, so she doesn't have to be constantly asked "Will you do a 4 Musketeers reunion"
Now she can say "I've done it" as she knew this would be a very short reunion, lasting only minutes. So she sucked it up, just to get it over with
Lucky for her Grant Alexander had technical issues and had to miss about half of the time allotted to the "reunion" - but at the end of the day Judi did a "reunion" and now she can say, she has done one, so she doesn't have to constantly asked if she will do it,
by Anonymous | reply 216 | December 21, 2020 3:38 PM |
Yes, r216. Exactly. She agreed to do it because it was a short 20 minute session. That way she can now say she has done a reunion whenever people ask about it.
The tension was palpable. She did not want to be there. It felt like she was gritting her teeth the entire time she was on., counting the seconds until it was over.
We've seen plenty of other actors be reunited for the first time in years on the Locher Room session. We know what the response is when they are genuinely delighted to see each other.
We didn't see that with the Four Musketeers. Judi did not give off those vibes in the least. The others, especially Krista, did seem glad to see Judi. But Judi did not return those feelings. Especially when she said, "It hasn't been that long."
They may have run into each other at the P&G Christmas parties in the 90s, but that AW's been off the air for 21 years now.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | December 21, 2020 9:44 PM |
Krista, I think, ignored whatever went down when it was happening, and maybe was hoping to make amends for it now.
Judi clearly has an empty bag of fucks. Considering that she lost her son and almost lost her life, good for her. Don't waste time on niceties!

I really find it hard to believe that someone did something so bad that you would need to hold onto the resentment for almost 40 years? It seems a bit childish in my opinion. Maybe it’s more a lack of familiarity. They all worked together for 20-25 years and with Beth Chamberlain it was a successful recast. Maybe it’s more awkwardness and a lack of shared experience? When Tina came on she did lighten up. I’m not so sure Judi is mad but just painfully shy.

It's amazing the changes that took place to GL with the Dobsons. Looking at the 1973 episode in R226, it really seems like it comes from an earlier age - other than being in color it could be from the 50s or the 60s. The organ music kinda borders on annoying.
The Dobsons revitalized GL but kept it recognizibly GL. Unfortunately later "revitalizations" in the 90s and 00s lost a lot of the soul of GL.

Yes, the Long era saw a chunk of older characters retired, apparently at CBS's insistence, but there was still a Bauer presence and a feel of family.
Whether or not one liked Maureen Bauer, her death really did signal the beginning of a change that took away that soul. It didn't matter if we saw recognizable faces like Alexandra, Phillip, Alan, Reva and Beth if those faces were doing unrecognizable things.
Like so many other shows, the things that made it special for us to watch were the things that the Powers That Be thought could be stripped from the walls for kindling. And eventually, the whole house collapsed as a result.

On the All My Children thread, they've been talking about various sets and how cheap looking those sets can be. People mention that when soap budgets were increased, a lot of shows jettisoned older sets in favor of new upgraded set that looked more expensive.
One of the things that TPTB often overlook is how comforting it can be to viewers to see those familiar sets. Just like seeing familiar characters, the sets can be so reassuring that even in changing times, some things are always there.
The Horton living room set on Days has been around since day one and it is always reassuring to see characters on that set. It may not be the most elaborate or expensive set Days has, but it sure feels like home because it's been there so long. And because characters I care about live on those sets.
Ditto the Katherine Chancellor set on Y&R. Yes, it got an upgrade a few years ago, but it is still recognizable as the Chancellor living room.
On GL, I think the longest running set was the Ed Bauer kitchen set. Nothing elaborate, but it felt like home.
On AW, the Cory living room was always familiar. The original set, debuted shortly after Mac married Rachel in 1975, was one of the most elaborate and expensive sets ever seen on daytime at that point. Show redid that set in 1987 to the point there was nothing recognizable from the original set, but I quickly grew to accept it because Mac and Rachel were there.
On ATWT, I guess the longest running set was Emma's kitchen with its eavesdropping porch. Very homey and always comforting to see that set.

R231 Yes, Liz!
I don't watch Y&R much but I know viewers had a reaction to recent renovations to both the Chancellor set and Victor and Nikki's home.
I realize the P&G shows had so many sunken costs in having to maintain sets, but I think the Bauer kitchen would have been one to save, for sure. I don't remember that they did that in later years.
We never needed big hotel lobbies, skyscrapers or bejeweled anything. We needed the comfort of home - the homes we knew, and watched every day.

You have to remember that GH was the show that started all of this. For better or worse, the soap genre was dying and that cunt Gloria Monty did save it. The Luke and Laura storyline and most of the show including Rick and Monica and Lesley and Alan storyline were getting record ratings and every show tried to duplicate it. And myself and every kid my age in high school and college was tuning in. AMC was one of the few that stayed true to its roots for the most part but even them sending Erica to New York was their own spin. The homespun sitting around the kitchen table talking about your problems was gone. The 80’s had arrived and it was glitz and glamour and it was the perfect marriage. The problem was it’s not sustainable without good writing. People eventually lose interest and won’t go along for the ride if the writing sucks or at least the writing is some what believable. Which is why I never liked Beth and Phillip (GA and JE) but I loved Beth and Lujack. Interestingly I liked Phillip and India(JB and MKA) and loved Beth and Philip later on (BC and GA) so it really is all about chemistry.

GH gets the blame for breaking down a lot of the traditional soap things, but I actually think the nighttime soaps had as big or a bigger role in it all. Those were the shows that really put the glam into the stories. GH (and later DAYS) was responsible for the more action-adventure, sci-fi, James Bondish sorts of stories.
R233 good points on a lot of that. I think one thing that bored me was the business stuff. Every show started having business intrigue all the time and it became dreary. No one knew what Spaulding did or why but everyone ran that company at one time or another. I joked that Harley would end up running it and then she did, and the joke wasn't funny anymore.

Well, it's been real, folks, but that's the name o' that tune.
It is time for me to take an extended (and perhaps permanent) break from the DL. I've been here for a few years and have loved our marvelous Midwestern threads (and started many of them).
Sadly, the well has been poisoned and when 2/3rds of the thread is filled with nonsense from someone who monopolizes the discussion, it is no longer fun.
May you all be well and healthy in 2021. Thanks to BNSD (wherever s/he is!) for a fun rivalry. And a special hats off to Aunt Liz. (Stop by and say hi sometime, Liz - I think you may well figure out where.)
Take care, all. (Well.....almost all)

NOOO DO NOT LEAVE BECAUSE OF THESE FOOLS
EVERY TIME THEY GET ANNOYING I TRY TO POST A NEW QUESTION IN THE THREAD TO BRING IT BACK ON TRACK
So-here’s my new one.
Why isn’t Search for Tomorrow remembered as fondly as AW, ATWT and GL?
Is it because it died before the internet? If that’s the case why are EON and Dark Shadows still discussed?

Donna, Donna, Donna,
Don't leave, don't leave, don't leave.
Hit the ignore button instead. When you ignore the two worst offenders, this thread, and all the other soap threads, become much more pleasant places to be. I reluctantly did that a few months ago and my tension over the thread vanished! The offenders posts all disappear and the thread becomes cordial, respectful and intelligent again.
I also echo r237's comment. I've frequently got the P&G threads back on track by specifically posing a question for discussion.
But if you are determined to go fishing, you gave me a good clue where to find you. I think you'll find I've already been there some.

Donna, you want my pickle?

Perhaps a vacation will leave me rested and less irritated, so you all may have convinced me......my membership expired tomorrow and I'd just had it, but I appreciate the kind suggestions.
Liz, your guess is likely correct. Let's just say I think you've been there before!

Jake, it depends.
Is it your Bay City pickle, or the later Oakdale pickle?
by Anonymous | reply 241 | December 27, 2020 11:29 PM |
Oh, definitely Bay City, Donna. You remember, from that day when we had sandwiches. When you turned your nose up at "pizza...ewww"? (real episode)

I've often wondered why Search for Tomorrow doesn't have more devotees.
Everytime I've tried to bring up Search, few people reply and the topic just dies.
I certainly watched Search some, especially after it moved to NBC. While the episodes were enjoyable, they weren't so addictive that I HAD to see the next episode.

Donna, dear,
The great thing is, you only have to hit the IGNORE button ONCE and every post on every thread by that person disappears from the thread.
Since there's only two people who are doing 95% of the trolling (including the Scoche Marin troll), once you've ignored both of them, this thread again becomes the friendly place we've all grown to love.
Then after you've hit the ignore button, you can go into the ignore section (circle with the slash through it) on the tool bar at the top of the screen and see everything that poster has written in one lump sum.

FYI, on the Karen Black sister thread, they're saying this one has been Murieled.
by Anonymous | reply 245 | December 28, 2020 12:30 AM |
Interestingly enough, that thread has more replies than this one does.
289 replies on Karen Black sister, vs. 245 replies on this one . And yet this is the one that's been Murieled.
Go figure!

R237 Both EON and Dark Shadows had pretty good runs in syndication after they want off the air (with Dark Shadows still going), so it's possible there are more people out, alive and kicking, to discuss them. Plus, there's always the fascination with the many, many gay actors who happened to populate both of those soaps.

I wish that Edge of Night was available on DVD like Dark Shadows is.
I would rewatch the Sky Whitney saga from 1981-82 all over again!
Also would love to see the original saga of the Whitney family from 1970-71 again. That's the one the introduced the Whitney family and their scion Keith Whitney who was actually a Charles Manson-like serial killer who went by the alias Jonah Lockwood.

It is on YouTube - as EON is one of the few shows on YouTube NOT yanked off the platform
