Whatever Happened To Dying Blanche?
I've been debating tonight with a friend about whether Blanche must be presumed dead on the beach, or if she is still has a chance at survival. It's clear she is in a bad way, to be sure. But director Richard Aldrich chooses to leave the ending ambiguous. Could Blanche have died that fast while Jane went and got the ice cream? They'd only just been talking moments before.
What do y'all think?

Blanche went on to become a spokesperson for the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. Baby Jane reinvented herself as Angelyne, and was last seen driving her pink Corvette on Sunset Boulevard in search of tourists to scam into buying her schlock.

She died and Baby Jane went to an asylum. At least Charlotte was exonerated/vindicated. She had the signed letter from Jewel Mayhew proving that she killed her own husband and had framed her.

Blanche survived, regained the use of her legs, and became a volunteer serving liquid refreshment at the asylum where Jane was committed.

Logically, she should have lived. She was hungry, dehydrated, and guilt-ridden, but people don't drop dead of dehydration in a few minutes. If she'd gotten some IV fluids in the ambulance or the ER, she would have been well enough to go home and sign Blanche's committment papers in a few days.
But it makes for a better story if Blanche dies on the beach, so the writers probably meant her to be dead at the end of the film.

Blanche lived in the Redgrave sisters version.

I think she survived and later died fighting an oil rig fire in the Gulf of Mexico.
If she weren’t still in that chair, I think she would have extinguished it.

She died. Poor Blanche was already dehydrated before Jane placed her in the sun.

They discovered her remains on that beach in July 2019. Before they removed her, they took a picture, and her image is now used in Public Service Ads by the state of California to remind beachgoers to use sunscreen and as a reminder not to leave your belongings unattended.

In the book, it is left ambiguous.

She stood up and caught a Streetcar named Desire. Jane ended up touring with Edmond in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. People loved her imitation of Bette Davis. Blanche had one more big screen role, starring in Trog. Special effects made it appear that she could walk.

R25 What do YOU think? What makes a more compelling ending? My friend says it doesn't matter. Whereas I think it really matters a lot. My sense is that she dies, and both of the sisters' lives are effectively over from that day onward. Jane will be institutionalized and Blanche will be cremated.

Blanche almost dying on the beach was a segue for the spinoff sitcom "Blankets."
Baby Jane was hit and killed by a car on the PCH while trying to flee police by foot. To put the entire tragedy behind her Blanche sells the house and has whats left of Baby Jane cremated. She and the urn of ashes open a blanket shop in Long Beach situated next door to an ice cream parlor owned by a handsome, flirtatious, but frustrating, Gus Hyman played by Andy Griffin. He thinks she's a "wet blanket" and she thinks he needs to "cool it" with his wanting to go on a date. Sparks eventually occur as does Blanche's unplanned pregnancy.

Blanche survives and recovers the use of her legs. She marries Lee Majors, but chops his head off when she catches him with another woman. She is put in an asylum (with her sister, Jane) for years until finally released to live with the adult daughter she never knew she had. More axe murders ensue.
