Many have speculated about their relationship over the years. A new book looks at the evidence.
Were Cary Grant and Randolph Scott Really Lovers?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 8, 2021 3:22 PM |
Do I think Cary Grant was gay as hell? Yes.
Do I think Cary Grant and Randolph Scott for lovers? Maybe, but mostly for the publicity. Stunt queens.

Absolutely
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 14, 2020 3:39 PM |
So I don't have to read the article or the book, is the answer yes?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 14, 2020 3:51 PM |
Didn’t Dyan Cannon say absolutely not!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 14, 2020 3:52 PM |
absolutely yes.......
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 14, 2020 3:56 PM |
Of course they were. And who gives a shit what Dyan Cannon says -- it's in her self interest to deny the obvious.
If you doubt he was gay, read this story relayed by Carleton Carpenter. The man is the sweetest, kindest soul...doesn't have it in him to make something up to hurt anyone.
"Another regret he has is far more lighthearted in nature — and it involves Cary Grant.
While performing on Broadway, the mega-star once visited Carpenter backstage unannounced and invited the cute young actor for a drink.
“I was taking my wig off and somebody knocked and there stood Cary Grant! My feet wouldn’t move. He’s saying how much he enjoyed me in the show and going on and all I could say was thank you,” Carpenter remembers. “He climbed three flights of stairs and I’m waving my wig at him. He said he would like to take me out and buy me a drink. In the meantime, I’m looking over at my rotten jeans on my dressing table and I thought, 'My God.' And I did have a date. I wanted to tell him I had a date but maybe all three of us could go out, but as soon as he heard the word 'date,' the door slowly began to close and he was gone. I’ve thought about maybe he wanted a piece of ass — he might very well have. He was a gentleman’s man as well as a ladies’ man.”

Hottest couple of all time. Equally matched in good looks.

Were Cary Grant and Randolph Scott Really Lovers?
Written by Rose Nylund with a forward by Hellen Keller.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 2, 2021 4:22 AM |
Per the linked article, the answer is no.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 2, 2021 5:05 AM |
Who knows. I would assume that they were at one time - if only to become friends after. Grant was almost certainly gay though (at least very bi on the Kinsey scale).
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 2, 2021 5:19 AM |
Didn't Scott do a gay interview with Boze Hadleigh
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 2, 2021 5:29 AM |
Hadleigh made that shit up

Cary Grant was gay. This was confirmed by the long suppressed autobiography of Orry Kelly. Kelly was a famous costume designer for big Hollywood studios and won 3 Academy Awards for his designs. Orry Kelly was ALWAYS out of the closet. He never tried to pretend he was straight. Cary Grant was his roommate in NYC before they both left for Hollywood in the 1930s and his sometimes lover. This book was published in 2015, 50 years after his death from liver cancer, after it was found in a pillow case. : I'm not positive, but I believe that Kelly confirmed that Scott and Grant were also lovers.

Seems like Grant was bi. Obviously had a thing with Scott, but as mentioned above, Dyan Cannon said he banged her. Hard to believe he didn’t bang Grace Kelly too (everyone did). There’s also a story recounted by Robert Evans where Grant came over to his house and talked at length (and presumably, sincerely) about his marriage, and women. Also the possibility shouldn’t be discounted that his sexual preferences changed over time, as is the case with many people.

The OPs link mentions 'evidence'.
None of that 'evidence' would stand up in court. Melting hearts and wishful thinking do not add up to evidence.

I think R17 is onto something. At 52, I know of a few high school friends who were really into guys (and girls) for a while - and passionately, too. I was the recipient of that passion. But, after marriage, kids, a few decades of age, each of them are just not into it anymore and are more content to be a straight man and focused on their women. I think this happens a bit. Young guys tend to fall for young guys.

Grant felt pressure to marry Cherrill in 1934, and by all accounts he acted like a gay man feeling pressure to "go straight." He was emotionally abusive, neglectful, and hostile from the very start, and it was all over within a year (no children, either, of course).

Grant had psychotherapy and used LSD in order to force himself to have sex with women. Sad times...
Guess it worked though, with Dyan anyway. Didn't they have a daughter?

Director Stanley Donen, who DL queens repeatedly insist had an affair with Gene Kelly, made four films with Grant. In fact, they formed their own production company -- a combination of their two names -- Grandon.
Donen's biography is LOADED with dish, except on one subject. Quoting:
"Donen recalled that he and Grant "used to talk endlessly -- which I will not talk about -- about his personal life, his love affairs, and his marriages and divorces."
So he'd talk about anything else, except Grant's private life.

Who was the top?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 2, 2021 7:58 PM |
Randy had no hangups about his background or mother, so I'm assuming he was the top. But a gentle, nurturing top.

Bottoms have hangups? Explain.

I don't believe Scott and Leach were fornicating.
What interests me is that Leach's career stayed at the top for another 20 years while Scott's career immediately sank into rubbish movies.
The other thing that interests me is that Scott's career sank into rubbish but he was actually more handsome than Leach.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 2, 2021 9:09 PM |
What's of interest, r27? Scott didn't have Grant's versatility.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 2, 2021 9:40 PM |
Meaning that Grant was a stronger dramatic *and* comic actor. Scott was mostly a pretty face.

He was chopped liver in "The Pride and The Passion".

I would consider their signatures on the home rental lease as admissable evidence.
This photoshoot would have taken 3 hours for the Publicity Department to shoot.

Scott came from a very wealthy family and made millions in California real estate. He may have died richer than Grant.

I wonder if they ever met over the subsequent four decades and reminisced over their short three-hour photo-shoot.

Randolph Scott was the poor man's Joel McCrea.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 2, 2021 10:46 PM |
Joel McCrea ended up richer than any of them. His San Fernando Valley ranch Thousand Oaks became the town Thousand Oaks and was so big that when he agreed to drill for oil, he made sure the wells could not be seen from his house.

I made sure of that too. What is so unusual about that that you feel the need to mention it R42: you type poors.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 3, 2021 4:11 AM |
Randolph Scott came from a wealthy family, Cary Grant did not. On their relationship some big actress at the time commented, "They have the perfect partnership, Randolph pays the bills and Cary mails them"

Mr Scott was absolutely gorgeous. As beautiful as a man can get.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 3, 2021 6:29 AM |
If you believe some of material in book "Hollywood Babylon" rumors about Cary Grant being gay go way back. There is a drawing of CG with exaggerated full lips (always a sign of a homosexual back then), eye makeup, etc..... disputing talk that he was "gay"....
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 3, 2021 8:36 AM |
I never found Randolph Scott to be handsome at all. But Joel McCrea- damn, now HE was gorgeous. And even sexier with a bit of rumpled, grumpy age to him (The More the Merrier and The Palm Beach Story) than in his younger Adonis days. What a shame he only played in Westerns after the early 1940s.
The only thing that makes me think Grant and Scott were not lovers is that this photo shoot is almost too obvious. It doesn’t seem in character for Cary Grant at all.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 3, 2021 8:55 AM |
Even Scott's wiki page provides info about Cary and Randy. Plus they lived together 12 years! Of course they were together.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 3, 2021 9:01 AM |
Cary Grant is a Hollywood legend who's still making money for Hollywood. There's no way he'll be officially declared gay or bi especially now when homophobia has been making a return with the rise of the right-winger conservatism. Grant's daughter has publically denied the gay rumors, saying her dad liked the rumors and used them to get women since apparently the ladies wanted to prove them wrong... I mean, oh dear.
I believe the rumors since they've been around for ages and there's just been so much of them. And obviously we've had so many gay Hollywood insiders saying he was gay which pretty much moves the whole thing from being just rumors to truth.

Gary Cooper was hotter

by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 8, 2021 2:28 AM |
Betsy Drake (Grant's wife before Dyan Cannon), told Robert Osborne on TCM that she and Grant had a very active sex life and she didn't believe he was gay. Which doesn't mean he wasn't bi, of course.

The answer to R27's question about their relative popularity is, I suspect, that Grant's looks appealed much more to women than Scott's.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 8, 2021 5:24 AM |
Oh c'mon. Grant was a much better, more charming actor than Scott. Scott was on the wooden side.
