Anyone get a vacation day because of Columbus Day?

I do because it's Indigenous Day.

by Anonymousreply 1October 12, 2020 2:31 PM

Was it a coincidence that Christopher Columbus discovered America on Indigenous Day?

by Anonymousreply 2October 12, 2020 2:33 PM

No mail today, but otherwise most everything is open.

Banks are closed, too. Happy Columbus Day! Not sure what one does to celebrate, however. I used to go to Columbus Day sales at the mall.

by Anonymousreply 4October 12, 2020 2:38 PM

R2, I believe he actually delayed landing for a few days, just as a slap in the face to the indigenous peoples when he showed up all bossy and European on their biggest holiday. He must've been a bitch!

by Anonymousreply 5October 12, 2020 2:40 PM

Columbus Day should be cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 6October 12, 2020 2:44 PM

R5 God that makes me hate Columbus even more now!

by Anonymousreply 7October 12, 2020 2:44 PM

Ingenious R2

Indigenous People's Day

by Anonymousreply 9October 12, 2020 2:46 PM

The company I work for is headquartered in Rhode Island and they get the day off. Everyone else works.

The rest of us do get a "free" day though that we can use at our choosing. They have to take today off and don't get the free day.

by Anonymousreply 10October 12, 2020 2:49 PM

Happy Ingenious Columbo Day

by Anonymousreply 11October 12, 2020 2:49 PM

It's Indigenous People's Day.

by Anonymousreply 12October 12, 2020 2:54 PM

It's Indigenous People's Day.

by Anonymousreply 13October 12, 2020 2:54 PM

R12, R1 said that already.

by Anonymousreply 14October 12, 2020 2:55 PM

R14, it's Indigenous People's Day.

by Anonymousreply 15October 12, 2020 2:55 PM

Ingenuous Combine Day

by Anonymousreply 16October 12, 2020 2:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 17October 12, 2020 2:57 PM

Indigenous People, r19.

by Anonymousreply 21October 12, 2020 3:00 PM

Indigenous People's Day should be celebrated on the day the nomads from Asia crossed the Bering Straight Landbridge and discovered Alaska.

Here is a fantastic video celebrating Native American cuisine/culture from a few years ago. Now, I'm looking for Native American restaurants in New York City...

by Anonymousreply 27October 12, 2020 3:08 PM

I weep for people who read R26's article and take it seriously.

by Anonymousreply 28October 12, 2020 3:12 PM

"Columbine Day? Why this is an outrage! Are... Are you Cheddar Cheese?"

by Anonymousreply 29October 12, 2020 3:14 PM

I work at a university and they cancelled Columbus Day, starting this year.

by Anonymousreply 30October 12, 2020 3:18 PM

I know white people have been pretty fucking awful, but I laugh a bit at the party line that white people have been the worst, unequivocally. It centers the West; it keeps whites on top and makes the West the standard by which all other peoples and societies are judged. In a sense, it preserves the Western hegemony that they are, ostensibly, fighting against.

by Anonymousreply 31October 12, 2020 3:18 PM

It's fucking Columbus Day. I've never heard of indigenous day lol...

by Anonymousreply 32October 12, 2020 3:20 PM

Nope but I’m sick 😷 cough cough

by Anonymousreply 33October 12, 2020 3:21 PM

R31, I agree. There's a piece in the Times criticizing Ta Nahesi-Coates from the same angle. He's so obsessed with white people that he elevates them to be some kind of standard. Ah here it is.

It's mainly Black Americans who are like this, because they don't know any other anchor.

[quote]celebrating Native American cuisine/culture

“Native American” Is just as alien and european a moniker as “Indian.” The tribes didn’t call themselves Native Americans — nor did they call themselves “First Peoples.” All bullshit, selfish, guilt-shifting terms.

by Anonymousreply 35October 12, 2020 3:24 PM

r34 in my corner of the world (academia) this thinking comes from all "identities." Whites are always the worst, end of story.

On the other hand, it also paints "POC" with a very broad brush. A Japanese colleague was aghast to learn that, in the US, she is considered a "POC." I see this also in terms like "Global South." As if being oppressed/colonized by Europe unites these people -- of vastly differently geographic locations, cultures, religions, and experiences -- in any meaningful way. In most cases, I'd argue the differences between them are almost as great as the differences between them and Europe/"the West". A student from Vietnam once told me that the Vietnamese dislike the Chinese far more than they dislike the French.

by Anonymousreply 36October 12, 2020 3:32 PM

[quote] A Japanese colleague was aghast to learn that, in the US, she is considered a "POC."

Yeah, it's absurd. Koreans and Chinese feel the same. It's hilarious to some of them.

by Anonymousreply 37October 12, 2020 3:35 PM

My former company gave very few holidays. I always hated taking half-empty trains on Washington's Birthday, MLK Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, and the day after Thanksgiving, when it seemed like everyone else had the day off.

Now I'm retired and don't give a fuck, except that it's raining and it's Member Monday at the MoMA and now it's going to be annoyingly crowded,

Normally I'm not this insufferable, but I'm watching the confirmation hearings and these Republicans have me furious.

by Anonymousreply 38October 12, 2020 3:37 PM

The garbage is running, that's all I care about.

by Anonymousreply 39October 12, 2020 4:16 PM

i was a Federal employee for 37 years and we always got the day off since it's a Federal holiday. But unlike most people, we NEVER got the day after Thanksgiving off (because it's not a Federal holiday.) I'd have preferred being able to trade Columbus Day for the day after Thanksgiving rather than having to use a vacation day to take Black Friday off.

Fun fact: Easter is not a Federal holiday either, but because it's on a Sunday, no one ever thinks about it. But I worked overseas (as a Fed) in a country where the work week was Saturday-Wednesday, and accordingly he had to work on Easter.

by Anonymousreply 40October 12, 2020 5:19 PM

WE, not HE in that last sentence.

by Anonymousreply 41October 12, 2020 5:21 PM

[quote]A student from Vietnam once told me that the Vietnamese dislike the Chinese far more than they dislike the French.

All of the various Asian nationalities despise the Chinese.

by Anonymousreply 42October 12, 2020 7:00 PM

I get $500 bonus for holiday pay so I am happy on all Federal holidays!

by Anonymousreply 43October 12, 2020 7:07 PM

It's "The White Male Genocide of Indigenous Peoples Day."

by Anonymousreply 44October 12, 2020 7:23 PM

But Italians and Spanish aren't white!

by Anonymousreply 45October 12, 2020 8:04 PM

I did as a federal employee.
