The Pence rally at the Florida retirement village

It's blazing hot and humid. At least three people have keeled over and needed medical attention.

But the fashion is splendid! Is that Madge from Benidorm?

Will the women wearing masks be stoned as a finale to the rally?

by Anonymousreply 2October 10, 2020 11:18 PM

Where do they even find these fashions? I wouldn't know where to start.

by Anonymousreply 3October 10, 2020 11:19 PM

Pence rally? Isn't that a paradox or oxymoron ir something? There may be no word for how stupid that is.

by Anonymousreply 4October 10, 2020 11:22 PM

An acquaintance as been stuck in a Florida retirement village, looking after her mother. She describes the place as "a charnel house", so many people have gotten Covid just from refusing to follow common-sense precautions.

And these fucking idiots are going out to rallies? Are the Republicans sensing their own doom and trying to kill off as many followers as possible, so they'll have servants in Hell?

by Anonymousreply 5October 10, 2020 11:22 PM

"Trump Girl" - these women left girlhood 50 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 6October 10, 2020 11:24 PM

Jeeze. They're all Madge from Benidorm wearing the same outfit. And there's not one girl there - not for a long, long time.

by Anonymousreply 7October 10, 2020 11:33 PM

Protecting their pensions. Fuck the rest of America. That is their mindset.

by Anonymousreply 8October 10, 2020 11:36 PM

So many of them unescorted.

You didn't hear it from me but means home-wreckers and cheap sluts.

by Anonymousreply 9October 10, 2020 11:38 PM

“It's blazing hot and humid.”

The flies are ready to get in the ointment slathered on the rally goers — and Pence’s head.

by Anonymousreply 10October 10, 2020 11:43 PM

Whenever you see pics of Trump-Pence supporters it is nothing but total white trash rednecks, a bunch of low-functioning losers

Have you all ever been there? Toured The Villages with an aunt and uncle that were considering it for retirement. It is a truly bizarre place full of bizarre people. The piped in music at the stores and town squares alone approximates some Disney-esque horror experience.

We all physically got the heebie-jeebies. It was beyond creepy. You'll run for your life.

by Anonymousreply 36October 11, 2020 1:56 PM

I posted this in the other thread, but I might as well post it here too.

I used to go to what I called "the rich people's WalMart" right next to The Villages. Once I went in there at 9PM on a Friday night and the place was pretty dead. So I said to the cashier, " Wow! This place is really empty! This seems like a good time to come in here."

"Well, it's still early," she said. "If you stay another half an hour, things will start to pick up. On Friday nights, the people from The Villages come in here looking for sex. They put different color scrunchies on their carts to tell other people what they're looking for."

As you can imagine, I was flabbergasted, but she assured me it was true. And by the way, many of them were couples looking for a third (or more?).

Needless to say, I don't go to that WalMart anymore.

So they've adopted the old gay "hankie code" for themselves? I wonder what the colors mean.

by Anonymousreply 41October 11, 2020 4:21 PM

R40

The entire place is huge with different neighborhoods, shops, etc. Golf carts are easier to use for getting from Point A to Point B without the hassle of a car.

And many are too old to walk. And it's a method of transportation that sprung from gated golf communities.

by Anonymousreply 42October 11, 2020 4:23 PM

Are trans women welcome to join the Trump girls, asking for a friend.

by Anonymousreply 43October 11, 2020 5:24 PM

A lot of small neighborhoods here in Southern California are adopting golf cart transportation. I was in a wealthier suburb of Atlanta last summer, and they had it too. Economical, since they're powered by electricity and are fun to drive. We have used them on film/tv studio lots for years, although I'll eschew them whenever possible- I've racked up up to 7 miles of walking on the WB lot.

by Anonymousreply 44October 11, 2020 5:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 45October 11, 2020 5:35 PM

I read a book about The Villages years ago. One creepy fact I'll share is that there is no actual direct mail delivery. The Postal Service can only do a massive drop off for an entire complex, which is then sorted by Village officials to be distributed to the recipients. You want privacy? Rent a P. O. box!

Why are they all blonde? I’m not familiar with retirement communities (we don’t have them where I’m from) or the demographics of the ones in Florida. I thought a lot of Jews and Italians retired to FL from NY and NJ, these don’t look like they are from that background.

by Anonymousreply 55October 11, 2020 11:20 PM

The Villages’ news site is consistently entertaining. Almost every day there’s a story about a heroin-addicted live-in child driving a golf cart into an alligator-filled lake or vomiting all over a community center during one of their superspreader events.

The letters to the editor run the gamut from complaints about loud music to elder-interest twists on standard QAnon theory to Trump love poetry. And masks; always the masks.

[quote]The CDC quietly stated that deaths initially contributed to COVID-19 are really only 6 percent of the reported numbers. At the time that was about 159,000 and 6 percent would be about 9,500, far less than the average number of seasonal flu deaths each each which is about 35,000.

R7 triggered a memory.

I went as Madge for Halloween one year. Scooter and all. The party room at the hotel must have been at least 3,000 square feet, This was in the US in 2010 (I have the invite still) and the hosts, British expats, said costumes should be of someone in British history or popular culture. I didn't think too many people would get it, but I knew the hosts would, and that was what was important.

Well. Miss Hotel Security wasn't having it. She saw we didn't park in a handicapped spot and saw us get the scooter from the back of the car. LOUDLY she reprimanded me that hotel policy was that transportation aids were allowed only if the person was truly disabled AND they must not be self-steered by the user. Bitch must have thought she was at the Met.

I begged and pleaded... the scooter was ley to my costume. NO SIR. You park that scooter right here and WALK! Which I did. I was uncomfortable, the hosts DIDN'T get it, and it was the most miserable night of my life. Who are you? Who are you?

That is, until I was put out of my misery by a guest offering a bump in the bathroom. It was my first. The rest of the night was glorious.

by Anonymousreply 77October 12, 2020 4:23 AM

[quote] R53: I’m not familiar with retirement communities (we don’t have them where I’m from)...

A developer purchased a huge acreage in central Florida, near Ocala, decades ago. This is in central Florida. He created a village, consisting of Golden Girl style houses, though all on one level. The village requires owners to be above a specific, certain age, which I forget. Then, they created a “town center”, where bands play, people shop, and dine. There are golf courses adjacent. Each home comes with a golf card for transportation within the village. These homes are probably cheaper that the homes the many of the elderly sold to buy-in.

After the first village was at or nearly fully occupied, the developer created another village, adjacent, with its own town center. Today, there are a number of villages all abutting each other, with new, adjacent villages planned for future development.

This is a place for healthy elderly people. Not people requiring nursing home care.

I don’t know how they can maintain the minimum allowable age of whatever it is, when the residents die and younger people inherit the homes.

Does that help?

by Anonymousreply 78October 12, 2020 4:50 AM

[quote]I don’t know how they can maintain the minimum allowable age of whatever it is, when the residents die and younger people inherit the homes.

Really? You don't know how the transfer of property works? It's like any other 55+ community. There are thousands of them all over the US. Heirs don't live in these home. Once the estate is settled, the house is sold to a new owner who must to be 55+.

by Anonymousreply 79October 12, 2020 7:47 AM

Under the Housing for Older Persons Act, 80% of the occupied units in an age-restricted community have to have at least one resident 55 or older*. If they drop below 80% they lose their age-restricted status. Communities are allowed to set their own minimum age for occupants.

It looks like The Villages doesn’t allow permanent occupants under 19, but they are allowed to visit for up to thirty consecutive days.

*There’s second category under HOPA which requires all residents to be 62 or older, but that doesn’t apply to The Villages.

by Anonymousreply 80October 12, 2020 8:44 AM

My God, the Villages sounds awful. Lots of old fat white people—how exciting can that ever get?

Trump would look at these women and say, "She's a 2, she's a 3." If Trump doesn't want to fuck a woman, he deems her worthless and devoid of value. He doesn't even like to be seen out in public with a woman whom he considers unattractive. He has zero respect for these older women...but we will accept their vote.

And they're going beatlemania over him? Sad.

by Anonymousreply 84October 12, 2020 3:36 PM

As for the blonde hair, yes, older women can't do darker hair as it looks harsh if they are pale. My own mother was a redhead her whole life but went gradually more strawberry blond and now to an ashier color to hide the gray. Blonde blends well with gray and hides thin spots.

by Anonymousreply 89October 12, 2020 5:14 PM

Thank you, R80. Not you, R79.

What I didn’t know about is how they can stop younger people from moving into homes they inherit due to age-discrimination laws. Though, of course, we legally discriminate for or against people based on age all the time. Just like how Social Security payouts start, for me, at 67, not 47.,

As a tangent, I know a slew of people who have held the same job for years, even decades, but get the heave-ho after they reach an older age, somewhere generally between 55 and 60. It’s so illegal, but it’s impossible to prove that it’s due to age discrimination. Some are offered lucrative payouts to voluntarily leave, I got 11 month’s pay for 10 year’s employment at one place I left.

by Anonymousreply 90October 12, 2020 5:48 PM

R53, I remember reading about the Villages when it was first built. It was in Time Magazine, I think. They wrote about it like it was a Disney-like development. A faux-small town experience. Because it is new construction that attempts to emulate and old, small town feel to it.

Also, it’s technically a gated community. I visited my cousin in one, a few years back, and I had to pass a guard house of some kind to get in. I think my cousin had to put me on a list to get me through. But I don’t remember it being difficult to pass through.

by Anonymousreply 91October 12, 2020 5:55 PM

I'm 68 and alone and have considered moving to one of these types of place (but in California, not--God forbid--Florida.) The other alternative would be in what they call continuing care communities, where you can start out in independent living and then move to other levels of care (assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care) as your needs change. Those places are MUCH MUCH more expensive but at least offer the option of not having to move if you can no longer live independently.

by Anonymousreply 92October 12, 2020 5:59 PM

R92 will they still let you cruise with us here at the DL?!

by Anonymousreply 93October 12, 2020 6:12 PM

R91? Some of it is indeed gated, but the shopping/restaurants/theaters are wide open. There are lots of traffic circles meant to slow down traffic, but in my experience the people who live there have no idea how to use them, and they still drive like maniacs. Every time I ride through there, I feel like I'm taking my life in my hands.

When I went to see a movie there that wasn't playing anywhere else, I was glad I'd taken my motorcycle, because there was no place to park a car with all the golf carts crowded around it! And speaking of golf carts, there are sidewalks just for them on the "main roads" -- otherwise, they would get run over by these crazy old guys in their second childhoods driving Corvettes and Porsches.

And if for some reason you still think that poor white trash can afford to live there...they even have their own polo field.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 94October 12, 2020 6:18 PM

R94, do they have a string of poloponies?

by Anonymousreply 95October 12, 2020 6:36 PM

R90, I realized right after I posted that I completely left out inheritance. Then I fell asleep.

Age isn’t one of the protected class under the Fair Housing Act. They are: race, religion, color, disability, sex, familial status, and national origin. The Housing for Older Persons Act covers age-restricted communities. The two categories are:

1) all occupants 62 or older

2) 80% of occupied units with at least one occupant aged 55 or older

55+ communities almost always exceed that 80%. The other 20% can be occupied solely by people who are younger than 55 but who meet that community’s minimum-age requirement.

But ownership and occupancy are two different things. For example, a thirty-year-old mother of a minor child could inherit and own a house in a 55+ community but she wouldn’t be allowed live there with the child. If the same thirty-year-old inherited a house but didn’t have any kids she could move right in provided the community hadn’t surpassed the 20%.

by Anonymousreply 96October 12, 2020 8:08 PM

Marry me, R95.

by Anonymousreply 97October 12, 2020 10:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 99October 12, 2020 10:42 PM

I love the obits on their website. The first couple of sentences and they tell how many hole in ones the person achieved in their lifetime and how many 300 games they bowled.

by Anonymousreply 100October 12, 2020 11:01 PM

All this talk of retiring to Florida makes me long for a time machine to have a Golden Girls election special. You know Blanche would have voted for Trump in 2016! Lol

While I wouldn’t want to live in this particular community I can see a lot of advantages to that type of living arrangement. It doesn’t exist in my home country and the family home is an extremely emotional concept and when the parent passes there’s very often extremely nasty fights among siblings. Not so much over money, the houses are not worth a lot, but there’s always one sibling who doesn’t want to sell it or one who moved in to look after mom and now they can’t get him out and he’s claiming it’s his home and then there’s the one who needs the money and is accused of being a cold hearted monster who never loved mom and then solicitors letters fly back and forth and siblings fall out forever. I can see a lot of positives in moving into a retirement community. Must free up housing too. Another issue in my country is the housing shortage because people buy a home and then stay there until death even if it’s far too big for a senior alone.

The late Charlie Daniels, old conservative Country music acts let Covita use their music.

Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder give President Obama and Vice President Biden permission to use their music. Other popular artists gave them permission too.

"Why are they all blonde? I’m not familiar with retirement communities (we don’t have them where I’m from) or the demographics of the ones in Florida. I thought a lot of Jews and Italians retired to FL from NY and NJ, these don’t look like they are from that background."

R53 Those who live in the villages are retired blue collar workers, postal workers, city and state employees - all getting pensions funded by taxpayers who will never get to retire.

Jews have much higher education levels and earn more money than the average Americans. Why would they want to retire to cheap houses in areas full of white trash? If you want to meet retired Jews, head to Naples, Palm Beach, Boca Raton, etc. You will not find many Jews living in a swamp in the middle of Florida.
