I have heard a number of people refer to Volvos as "luxury" cars, but I've always thought of them as more utilitarian than anything else. I know they are popular in the northeastern U.S., and they are also pretty common where I was raised in the Pacific Northwest; my grandparents had an old '60s yellow Volvo sedan which my grandfather was apparently very fond of. My college car was a beater Volvo, and I've owned a more modern one of their wagons in the years since. I do think that, on the whole, they are nice, durable cars, though I've never gotten the impression that they were anymore luxurious than a higher-end Honda or even a Ford. I would never rank them anywhere near a BMW or Mercedes, in terms of glamour at least.
They’re made in China now, having been bought by a Chinese company. Luxury? Well maybe but for the same amount of money or a little more, you’d be better off buying top trim Lexus models.
I owned a Volvo from 2007-2019. It gave me nothing but huge repair and maintenance bills about 5 years into ownership. When it was damaged by a hit and run driver, my insurance decided to do a write-off instead. I was so happy to be rid of that fucking Volvo.

Aren’t they pretty expensive?
That would make them a luxury vehicle. They’re not as boxy as the used to be, either.
