Her vocals work well for her music. She was never a great singer but I think she has emotional power to her songs. A lot of her music is slow and laidback so the whispering doesn't bother me. A lot of musicians have stylistic types of singing like Britney's vocal fry, Lou Reed's rambling and Mariah's whistling.

"She's an eternal narcissist, nothing else. That's what happens when you sell your soul for human glory."
There used to be this podcast on iTunes called the "Celebrity Playlist Podcast", where they would get celebrities to make playlists of some of their all-time favorite songs. They would talk about the songs they'd chosen and play snippets of them.
They had some pretty big names...off the top of my head, I recall Dave Grohl, Ringo Starr, Sammy Hagar, Mick Fleetwood, Wilmer Valderrama, Rupaul, Phil Collins, Cee-Lo Green, Ellen Degeneres, and...Janet Jackson.
Of the dozens and dozens of celebrities they had on, Janet Jackson was the only one whose ENTIRE list of songs were ALL SONGS BY HER.
Up to that point, I don't think even one celebrity had ever chosen even one of their own songs, and she chose nothing but her own songs.
I remember listening to this and just thinking. "Wow. This woman is truly insane."

It would be easier to name famous people who aren't narcissists than not. I thought Janet was acting crazy for marrying that Arab millionaire and having a child at age 50 and cancelling his tour dates for that pregnancy. She then divorced him and got that money. Seemed greedy and shady. To be normal and to be a Jackson does not exist in the same universe. Joe didn't abuse her but she said he was very cold to her and had her call him "Mr. Joe Jackson" or something like that. She was much younger than the rest of her siblings so she never got to know them that well either. Her relationship with Michael seemed like she worshipped him and didn't know him. Michael seemed fond of Janet because he saw her as a younger female version of himself, he was the biggest narcissist not her.

Struggling to become relevant. And I use the word “become” because she has never been. I don’t even keep up with this kind of shit. But I could easily lay out 20 of her contemporaries with more success, be it financial or artistic
I grew up working in a vinyl/metallic disc shop when she was in her prime. We couldn’t give that shit away. It was pretty much common knowledge that she was more of a campaign than a performer.

Janet was always popular in certain demographics and was mainstream at one point with Rhythm Nation. She did well enough to have two decades of hits. She wasn't as popular as Madonna or Whitney. But doesn't mean she was never popular. Your anecdote is yours but others would beg to differ.
If she wasn't relevant why should even be discussed on this forum to begin with and why would you comment?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 10, 2020 4:48 AM |
Nobody was as popular as Madonna then Whitney. Both were huge stateside but Madonna was on another level worldwide. Next, Celine surprised everybody in the 90s with her US and worldwide success. It goes Madonna, by far, then Celine, then Whitney.

She should have stopped the plastic surgery after here. She thinned her nose too much in the 90s. Toni and Tamar Braxton did the same thing.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 10, 2020 4:59 AM |
I saw her in concert for the Rhythm Nation tour.
Probably the most boring concerts by a major artist I've ever been to.
The music sounded totally canned. They were playing live, but it was all so processed and synthesized, it might as well have been pre-recorded tracks.
And speaking of pre-recorded tracks...Miss Jackson's vocals. Oh, dear. This was the first show I'd ever been to where the artist sang along with a pre-recorded vocal track. It's basically lip-syncing, except they have a live mic and are singing along with the track, so when they go off-key, it's not nearly as noticeable, and it gives them the ability to inject a "wooh!" or "yeah!", which fools a lot of the dullards into thinking that what they're hearing is just her singing live.
I don't know why so many people get fooled by this. To my ears, it always sounds really obvious.
In any case, yeah, super boring show. For all the elaborate choreography and all the smoke machines and lighting effects and what have you, it was totally lacking in energy. The whole experience seemed pre-programmed and fake AF. And this was her at her commercial peak.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 10, 2020 5:04 AM |
R27 I agree with this. Madonna, Celine and Whitney had wide and massive appeal. Mariah debuted too in 1990 and has huge too. All had huge audiences of varying ages and demographics. Janet was still popular with the MTV and R&B/hip-hop crowd and her impact is mostly seen on artists like TLC, Aaliyah, Mya, Brandy, Destiny's Child and Britney Spears.
R29 Well duh! I mean let's be real here. There's no way to sound exactly like your voice would on a CD especially after the production is over. Most of the audience is there to see a performance with choreography and person live. Same reason people went to see New Kids on the Block, Bobby Brown, Paula Abdul, Madonna, Britney, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, NSYNC, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Jennifer Lopez. Michael Jackson also was caught lip-syncing too. Pop stars are performers not artists or musicians, dancing and singing is difficult and your not going to sound as polished as the finished product on the CD. You really can't win here. So being mad about lip-syncing doesn't really make sense.

R68 As has been explained a million times, those aren't really *equivalent album sales*. There is a huge difference between having 628 million streams versus selling 322 million physical albums and singles. Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Ariana are popular but to pretend they were ever selling like Madonna, Mariah, Whitney and Celine did is a lie.

R69, 85% of music industry revenue in 2020 is streaming, so I don't understand what your point is? Are you saying that all charts/sales since 2015 are bogus and shouldn't be counted? Should we also limit album/single sales to those sold on vinyl or 8-track cassettes? That seems to be the point you're making. I'm sorry your faves aren't big streaming forces.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | October 10, 2020 5:56 PM |
R70, uh, no. My point is streams should be weighted lower than physical and digital singles and albums. It took a hell of a lot more effort to physically go to the record store and purhcase a single/album than it does to click on a playlist on spotify. Many times, streaming can be compared to listening to a song on the radio.

R71, Streams ARE weighted lower and always have been. It takes 1250 PAID audio streams, and 3,750 ad-supported streams, to equal an album sale. This chart shows the total worldwide sales when you add in pure sales and adjusted streams.

DAMITA JO is multi platinum. All of her albums since the SB incident debuted at #1 except DJ and 20 YO, which debuted and peaked at #2. Her blacklisting played a big part in their underperformance, but even with the blacklisting, she still managed to put out albums that debuted in the Top 2 stateside. No. DAMITA JO was fabulous (“All Nite...” is one of her best dance songs ever). 2O Y.O. was a bit too urban for some of her fans, but it contained one of her best ballads (“Enjoy”) and one of her best bedroom jams (“Take Care”). Discipline was a bit uneven, but it had the hot top 20 single “Feedback” and the highly underrated and ahead of its time “Rock With U.” And Unbreakable was rightly heralded by critics as her best work since The Velvet Rope.

That pic was taken with a wide angle lens from ten feet away and even so only her face would fit in the frame!

R98, I'm not lying and you're cuckoo.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | October 11, 2020 2:35 PM |
R98 Their anecdote is valid. Janet was mostly popular in The US, UK and Japan. I love Janet and all but crazy fans just dont help anyone's reputation and music is subjective. Beyonce, Britney and Gaga fans also don't realize this.

Janet was never that big in Europe.

[quote] I'm European and I honestly can't name a single JJ song. The ones listed upthread ring no bells. The only thing I kind of remember is that she had a minor hit in the early naughts, I think, which saw the light of the day on the music channels. It was GHASTLY. Pretentious, syrupy, unironic in its whiny awfulness. I changed the channel every time it came on. True story.
One big lie.
Janet has had huge success all over the globe, including Europe. She even started her Velvet Rope tour there instead of in America due to wild success. She sold out all over Europe. Her single “Together Again” from that album was also globally massive and is one of the biggest selling singles of all time.

Wissam is hotter than all of Madonna's cast-offs.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | October 11, 2020 4:04 PM |
Yes, which makes one wonder why he was with Janet.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | October 11, 2020 4:08 PM |
Well, it's not a lie, R106 and you might want to look into calming down.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | October 11, 2020 4:11 PM |
"Together Again"? One of the biggest global hits? I have never, ever heard of it. Never. And it's not like I don't listen to pop music.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | October 11, 2020 4:13 PM |
Janet doesn't really have a song like Heaven Is A Place on Earth.
That was huge in Europe.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | October 11, 2020 4:40 PM |
Wissam must've been horse-hung.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | October 11, 2020 4:54 PM |
R94 Oh, guuuuuurl, that is one gay looking huzbin.

Janet was hitting the bleach hard in the late '80s.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | October 11, 2020 5:25 PM |
OOH, JABBA/R106 be MELTING she so PRESSED!
by Anonymous | reply 117 | October 11, 2020 5:38 PM |
Is it Photoshop or did her complexion really lighten? She is noticeably darker in the older photos.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | October 11, 2020 5:43 PM |
She was Paula Abdul toned in the late '80s, early '90s.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | October 11, 2020 5:49 PM |
It was the make-up. She was light during the Control and RN 1814 eras, but during the janet. era she was more her natural brownish tone.

"Together Again" was well received by music critics, who praised the song's structure and Jackson's vocals. The single was a commercial success, topping the US Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, as well as reaching number one on the Dance Club Songs chart. The single was additionally certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Worldwide, it peaked within the top-five in most countries, such as Canada and the United Kingdom, and topped the charts in the Netherlands. The single sold six million copies worldwide and is one of the best-selling singles of all time.
