Kamala Harris is not the first Black Woman nominated for VP, Charlotta Bass was in 1952

I am sick of the rewriting of history that keeps happening these days.

Charlotta Bass ran for VP on the Progressive Party Ticket, and received endorsements from W.E.B DuBois and Paul Robeson.

PS I don’t even consider Kamala a “black” woman and online many others don’t either.

by Anonymousreply 73October 11, 2020 7:28 PM

I believe Kamala is being touted as first black woman as VP for a MAJOR party. Who the fuck are the Progressive Party?

by Anonymousreply 1October 9, 2020 3:43 PM

R1 spoken like an uneducated goon.

Back then every party had a chance, and in 1952 the Progressive Party was a big deal.

by Anonymousreply 2October 9, 2020 3:46 PM

[quote]PS I don’t even consider Kamala a “black” woman and online many others don’t either.

Then you're an ignorant uneducated racist fuckwit whose opinion isn't valid on anything else, so fuck right off.

by Anonymousreply 3October 9, 2020 3:47 PM

How on Earth could Kamala not be considered black?

by Anonymousreply 4October 9, 2020 3:49 PM

The foul-mouthed, obsessive, crackpot Race Troll again with more useless propaganda.

by Anonymousreply 5October 9, 2020 3:49 PM

R2, the "Progressive Party" got 0.23% of the vote in 1952, so you can fuck right off.

by Anonymousreply 6October 9, 2020 3:49 PM

Charlotta looks lite mocha.

by Anonymousreply 7October 9, 2020 3:51 PM

Kamala is very clearly HALF black. She is not BLACK. She is mixed. And it shows.

I’m sick of the bullshit that someone like Kamala or Rashida Jones are exactly the same as Lupita or Viola Davis. They aren’t.

by Anonymousreply 8October 9, 2020 3:51 PM

OP, I'm black and you're an idiot with the Kamala isnt black narrative. Her father, a Jamaican, was OBVIOUSLY Black. She attended an HBCU and had BLACK experiences in this country. People like you piss me off with the BULLSHIT. Find something worthwhile to be upset about next time

by Anonymousreply 9October 9, 2020 3:52 PM

R8 doesn't get it.

Kamala Harris is black. She went to an HBCU. Yes, she's also part Indian ("south east asian"), but that's kinda irrelevant.

She's Black. She counts. And it's ridiculous to try and deny it. A cop pulling her over isn't going to treat her half as badly as a person with two Black parents you racist fucks.

by Anonymousreply 10October 9, 2020 3:53 PM

Was not Angela Davis a VP nominee on some party ticket.

by Anonymousreply 11October 9, 2020 3:53 PM

She’s half black. Not black.

by Anonymousreply 12October 9, 2020 3:59 PM

R3, R9 and R10 instead of spewing venom, why not educate us on why she is NOT considered half Black and half Indian. I am genuinely curious to know why she is considered BLACK (100%). Is it because that's the popular narrative or is it something more? Is it how you "present"?

Also, it would be nice if an explanation was given like an adult i.e. without the gratuitous "you dumb fuck" , "you racist bastard", "you troll" etc. etc.

by Anonymousreply 13October 9, 2020 4:00 PM

Then there is this article. But of course, we love to divide along racial lines in the USA.

by Anonymousreply 14October 9, 2020 4:03 PM

I doubt that cops who pull over people ask for a 23andme DNA analysis before they decide on how to proceed.

by Anonymousreply 15October 9, 2020 4:04 PM

I’m sick of biracial people being labeled as one thing. Especially when you can tell they’re mixed.

People always get mad when I say Rashida Jones is NOT BLACK. “Yes she is, she is a black woman”.

Life is very very different for someone who looks like this...

by Anonymousreply 17October 9, 2020 4:04 PM

R15 rarely do people who look like Kamala get pulled over. Look at almost all the black people being stopped by cops, they don’t look like Kamala...

by Anonymousreply 18October 9, 2020 4:06 PM

r18 thank you!

I am not saying that it never happens, because of course it does, but it is a lot less likely for someone like Kamala, or Rashida Jones, or Mariah etc to get pulled over than someone who looks like Viola, Lupita, Kanye etc. And most times when it does happen they aren't treated the same.

I am a caramel colored Hispanic man and never have been stopped by a cop, ever. Actually, while walking home late I had a couple wave hello at me the other night with smiles as I passed them.

by Anonymousreply 19October 9, 2020 4:16 PM

Is she African-American in the sense of being descended from slaves? Is that a distinction?

by Anonymousreply 20October 9, 2020 4:16 PM

Christ Americans are so weird about race.

R2: No, cunt. Only 2 parties had a chance. Democratic and Republican. The Progressives were derided as Soviet Communist agents. They only got .23% of the vote. They had no fucking shot.

And Kamala is black. Full stop. Period. End of discussion.

Very bad try, troll. VERY. BAD. TRY. Sit down and shut up.

by Anonymousreply 23October 9, 2020 4:28 PM

Kamala is not fully black. She is half black.

by Anonymousreply 24October 9, 2020 4:32 PM

[quote] Kamala is not fully black. She is half black.

Nobody cares. But please, by all means, keep tilting at windmills.

by Anonymousreply 25October 9, 2020 4:42 PM

R9, I’m Indian am I not “allowed” to claim Kamala (very Indian name, btw) as one of my own? I’m proud of my Desi sister!

A lot of flawed logic in this post. 🙄🙄

by Anonymousreply 26October 9, 2020 4:56 PM

Wow, the race baiters have done a complete 180 on what makes someone black -- the old "one drop'" canard was fine when it was used to perpetuate Jim Crow, but now all they do is bitch about people not being "black enough."

I call bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 27October 9, 2020 4:57 PM

A question for those of you adamantly asserting how black she is: why did she fare so dismally among black voters last spring?

by Anonymousreply 28October 9, 2020 5:05 PM

Do you really think someone who looked like Kamala Harris would have been served at a lunch counter in Alabama in 1952? No, she wouldn't be.

by Anonymousreply 29October 9, 2020 5:22 PM

R26: Claim her, you pretentious twat. But in claiming her, you CANNOT also deny her blackness. Simple as that. Talk about flawed logic.

R28: Mike Bennett did badly among white voters, so I guess he isn't white. Sit down and shut up, racist trash.

by Anonymousreply 30October 9, 2020 5:38 PM

r28 You seem to think that black people cast their votes according to the skin color of the candidate. Am I reading you correctly?

by Anonymousreply 31October 9, 2020 6:25 PM

People who look like Kamala were treated better than people who look like Lupita since the beginning of slavery.

Kamala would be an indoor, House Slave who is treated better while Lupita on the fields, getting whipped and having to sleep on dirt.

They weren’t treated the same even back then. Study black history in America folks. Being black doesn’t mean you know shit about History.

by Anonymousreply 32October 9, 2020 6:28 PM

R31

I'm addressing the issue that Biden was pressured, for lack of a better term, into selecting a black woman as though he'd lose if he didn't is where I'm coming from.

She's from a state he'll win by several million votes, leaving the nomination race with negligible support. Black voters didn't seem to flock to either her or Booker, so obviously they don't vote on race alone. Many were loyal to Clinton over Obama.

by Anonymousreply 33October 9, 2020 6:39 PM

R30 aren’t you just the cat’s meow. You’re a Political Scientist, oooh you must know everything.

by Anonymousreply 34October 9, 2020 7:18 PM

Of course this conversation is happening on race-obsessed Datalounge. Old white Queens arguing over who is black and who isn't.

Isn't there a thread about Italians you can revive, OP? Because that one hasn't been beaten to death either.

by Anonymousreply 35October 9, 2020 7:25 PM

I thought it's been established that Italians are white adjacent, R35. Do try to keep up!

by Anonymousreply 36October 9, 2020 7:38 PM

Thanks, OP.

by Anonymousreply 37October 9, 2020 7:55 PM

Girls, girls you can all be racial experts some other time, right now we have to fight the anti- orange fight.

by Anonymousreply 38October 9, 2020 8:10 PM

"Old white Queens arguing over who is black and who isn't."

R35 - That is a great concept for a reality game show. It should run in the time slot right after Ru Paul's Drag Race.

by Anonymousreply 39October 9, 2020 8:14 PM

Angela Davis ran in 1980 and 1984 as VP on the ticket of the Communist Party USA. That's the one that was controlled by the Soviet Union

by Anonymousreply 40October 9, 2020 8:23 PM

R40 - Her and old Gus Hall were quite a team.

by Anonymousreply 41October 9, 2020 8:32 PM

Major party ticket, Vladimir.

by Anonymousreply 42October 9, 2020 8:39 PM

R17, Lupita has had a very privileged life. Her father is a former professor and government minister in Kenya, she grew up as part of the country's elite. Aside from being Kenyan, she's also Mexican as she was born in Mexico because her father was a professor there. What she is not is American.

Why do people who call themselves African-Americans forget that Africa exists?

by Anonymousreply 43October 9, 2020 8:41 PM

She is facing a lot of the same racist attacks as Obama.

by Anonymousreply 44October 9, 2020 8:48 PM

Don't forget Lenora Fulani!

by Anonymousreply 45October 9, 2020 8:55 PM

[quote] I am sick of the rewriting of history that keeps happening these days.

Then write the publications that are infuriating you and share the responses. You sound very passionate about the topic. It might also lessen the hateful, racist comments which typically flare up in your threads. Please keep us posted on the progress of your crusade. We can even hashtag it: #stopthehistoryrewrites

Check in a few months down the road and let us know the progress you've made brah!

by Anonymousreply 46October 9, 2020 8:59 PM

I had, in fact, forgotten Lenora Fulani. Wikipedia says she was the first African American and first woman to get on the ballot in all 50 states. I think that makes her a major candidate.

by Anonymousreply 47October 9, 2020 9:05 PM

I am sure that that claim was made for a major party. Good Lord there’s nothing that anybody can ever agree on these days.

by Anonymousreply 48October 9, 2020 9:46 PM

These idiotic "gate-keepers" for "genuine blackness" are as tedious and as racist as White Supremacists with their "one drop" rule.

by Anonymousreply 49October 10, 2020 1:19 AM

I hate phonies.

by Anonymousreply 50October 10, 2020 1:33 AM

Oh, so you don't consider Kamala Harris to be black, you racist asshole. "And online many others don’t either." What a tool.

In today's world, among people who respect others' dignity and culture, you don't get to question a person's identity with a "the internet thinks she's a foreign dot head" or "she's not black enough for THIS white person."

Ignore the troll. Ignore the bullshit, too, of fools in the 'hood who question Harris' cred when they wouldn't consider dating someone they call "Midnight" and use whitening agents to lighten up. This insane hypocrisy creeps in everywhere. Remember the crap Obama had to endure?

But most of all avoid the stink of trolls such as the OP.

by Anonymousreply 51October 10, 2020 1:51 AM

[quote] you don't get to question a person's identity

Thanks for sticking up for me, R51.

by Anonymousreply 52October 10, 2020 2:04 AM

She's black adjacent.

by Anonymousreply 53October 10, 2020 2:13 AM

Back to topic at hand. In 1948, the Progressive Party was a potential spoiler as they ran Henry Wallace, VP under FDR from 41-45 as their candidate to run to the left of Harry Truman. Anti communist witchhunts of the late 40s and early 50s decimated the Progressive Party, but they put up candidates in 52 but they had nowhere the impact (limited though it was) of Wallace and the party folded after the election.

On the other end of the political spectrum, Pat Buchanan, when he was the Reform party candidate in 2000 had a Black woman as his running mate. Her name was Ezola Foster.

He was the only black kid in that town. I remember when trump started that birther bullshit. Lots of people in that town remember him being born because his mom married a black man. They even went on tv and said they remember him because he was black. It was a BIG deal back then. And not in a good way

He didn't have an easy life. You are racist cunts

by Anonymousreply 61October 10, 2020 3:23 AM

R61, her father is Jamaican, and how do you think Black people arrived in Jamaica? Slavery.

Jamaica is part of North America.

Her heritage is African American.

by Anonymousreply 62October 10, 2020 4:49 AM

[quote] I am sure that that claim was made for a major party.

Yes. Kamala Harris is the first black and first Indian-American woman to be a major-PARTY candidate for VP. Nothing wrong with knowing who women such as Charlotta Bass and Angela Davis are, but they were not major-party candidates (as most of the trolls in here probably perfectly well know).

[quote] Back then every party had a chance, and in 1952 the Progressive Party was a big deal.

Did you really think anyone was going to believe this nonsense?

by Anonymousreply 63October 10, 2020 5:16 AM

[quote] Kamala would be an indoor, House Slave who is treated better while Lupita on the fields, getting whipped and having to sleep on dirt.

So house slaves weren't black? You can have an easier life than some other black people do and still be black, ffs.

by Anonymousreply 64October 10, 2020 5:22 AM

To r64's point, those lighter-skinned female house slaves were also subject to rape and sexual exploitation by their white masters - see Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson.

R52 try going to Jamaica or at least meeting some Jamaican people. They don’t consider themselves “African American” given the connotation of that term (and while you’re at it look up “connotation” vs “denotation”)

Americans who have Jamaican ancestry/background typically consider themselves “Caribbean” or “Caribbean-American” and also usually look down on “African Americans” for a variety reasons.

Educate yourself , virtue signaler .

by Anonymousreply 67October 10, 2020 6:54 PM

Because White people, like r8, don't consider anyone mixed with anything else not white, they're trying to apply the same standards for Black people. Blackness has always been inclusive in a way that's totally opposite to whiteness which is why most people mixed with black always identify as black. Also, all Black Americans descended from slaves are of mixed heritage. No one is purely African. Kamala's mother being Indian is interesting because she is actually less "white" than Viola.

by Anonymousreply 68October 10, 2020 7:13 PM

Blackness has always been inclusive. The opposite of whiteness which is by nature exclusive. Some of the biggest black icons have been of mixed descent. Everyone from Fredrick Douglas, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks to Barack Obama, Bob Marley and Thurgwood Marshall. You don't get to define blackness for black people.

And newsflash r8, Lupita and Rashida Jones may look different. So do white people from Lapland and Sicily.

by Anonymousreply 69October 10, 2020 7:30 PM

[quote]Americans who have Jamaican ancestry/background typically consider themselves “Caribbean” or “Caribbean-American” and also usually look down on “African Americans” for a variety reasons.

r67 I find that most American people have very little to no understanding of the social dynamics of Afro-Caribbean people. Most of the people on this site barely know about the social dynamics within the African American community in US. So for me it has become futile to try to explain something more complex. Its ok to be ignorant on the subject, as long as you don't go around trying to tell Caribbean people what they identify as. And gay people more than anyone should know better.

by Anonymousreply 70October 10, 2020 11:40 PM

Wow, Kamala's staff have already crossed out OP.

R60 Barack "Barry" Obama was probably the most popular kid in his class at Punahou, so while he's dealt with a lot of shit, he didn't deal with nearly as much of it growing up in Hawaii.

R66 In 1961 it sure as hell was. Not just against black Americans, either.

Jets had just gone into service, making Hawaii a lot less "exotic" than it had been when you had to sail on the "Lurline" for five days to get there. Hawaii's white population - until the 1960's - was largely Republican military retirees. Elvis' mother, Angela Lansbury's character in "Blue Hawaii," was written as a flat-out racist and why not? There were plenty more like her. Not exactly an open-minded group.
