Worst Wigs in a Film or TV Series
I just saw some promotional stills from "The Undoing" and it appears just as she did in "Big Little Lies," Nicole Kidman will be wearing a cheap wig.
First of all, at this point I'm convinced Nicole, who used to have a beautiful head of hair, now has alopecia or something. She never seems to wear her natural hair onscreen anymore. However, when she does she's always in some shitty wig made from synthetic hair. I'd say the one from "The Undoing" is one of the worst I've seen.
Elizabeth Olsen's wig in "Avengers: Infinity War" gets bumped to second place, while Nicole's wig in BLL holds 3rd.

Karl Lagerfeld said Chanel poster girl Nicole Kidman had a "bizarre body make-up: endless legs and not much in the way of breasts. What she shows to the world is not her. Her perfection is an illusion: she knows it and couldn't give a damn."
He basically said she looks like a stork and yes, she has bad hair.

Barbara Stanwyck in "Double Indemnity" - but it was supposed to be a bad wig. The director wanted her glamour to be shifty and chintzy.

Dame Joan Collins' wigs in S2 of 'Dynasty' (her first season on the show) were notoriously bad. In one of the 'Dynasty' fan groups I'm a part of (I know, gay), one of the ladies on there said she knew a hairdresser on 'Dynasty' who claimed Joan provided all her own wigs that season, and that she purposely bought the cheapest ones possible because she felt they were easier to style and had more bounce. Not sure if that's true, but she alternated between wearing her own hair and the hideous wigs...it was always easy to spot her own hair because her hairline was (and still is) fairly thin at the front. Joan herself claimed that's why she started wearing wigs, after being a starlet in the 50s and having a studio hairdresser tell her she had thin hair.

Yes, it was bad, wasn't it? I read "The Stand." "The character she played, Nadine, apparently had striking hair; thick and black, "shot with skeins of purest white." The hair Giacomo sported in that mini-series looked like old lady hair; long and limp and gray.
Molly Ringwald wore a ridiculous wig in that production, too. Her character, Fran, had long dark hair hanging halfway down her back. In "The Stand" mini-series, she had an unflattering bob hairstyle, incredibly out of date for the time period and obviously a wig. The hairstylist on "The Stand" should have been fired.

It's a pity as Laura San Giacomo has great hair.
Her character in the tv movie The Stand was actually a combination of two characters from the book... villainess Nadine, as well as the "older attractive woman" that Larry meets in the park, Rita Blakemoor. They merge the characters halfway through. So the wig is to make her look older as well as more witchy. She also wears a terrible white wig later on.

When the plot calls for an actress to cut off her hair or suddenly have short hair and a) that same plot requires for her hair to be long at some point in the movie or b) the actress refuses to get a haircut, the resulting wigs used are usually dismal.

R67, I thought I recalled reading at the time that it was a wiglet. What about Drew Barrymore's 'Scream' hair? I had a lesbian friend in college (not the Garofaholic) who had the poster up in her dorm room and swore that was Drew's real hair. But I've read since that *that* one was a wig (which it totally looked like).

R87, she swore she read somewhere that Drew wanted to go very meta to play Casey Becker, and that she had her hair cut that way. This was before the Internet was readily available, so I had no way to disprove her.
Unrelated to the 'Scream' series, but JR's toupee on 'Dallas' was never believable, and got worse as the series went on. Even as a child I knew that couldn't be his real hair. Then Larry Hagman played a judge on a show called 'Orleans' in '97 and wore his real hair to differentiate from JR Ewing.

Marilyn Monroe wore a very fake looking, unflattering wig in "The Misfits." At the time of her death her hair was so overbleached and burned up from all the hair treatments that a wig was used to cover it up. Supposedly she was interred wearing a wig from "The Misfits." That was probably a mistake. The daughter of Marilyn's possessive psychiatrist Ralph Greenson was at Marilyn's funeral. She said that when the lid of the coffin was lifted for mourners to pay their last respects "a shock of yellow hair popped out. I couldn't bear to look."
