He’s the lead on Titans.
What more do you want?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 5, 2020 11:01 PM |
Cute, but a little too boring for a leading man career. Not that it's stopped many others, but I've never seen him show a lot of charisma or talent. He's not awful at all, but he doesn't do anything that several dozen other guys his age could do just as well if not better.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 5, 2020 11:13 PM |
R8, he’s like a clone of Orlando Bloom.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 5, 2020 11:30 PM |
Because he got married at such a young age.
Young females want to swoon over a cute young star, but they can't do it when they know he's married.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 6, 2020 6:30 AM |
Because of his meh look and weird last name?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 6, 2020 12:37 PM |
Bump. There was a blind item about him being told by some movie studio bigwig to forget about an A-list movie career because he wasn't talented enough. The bigwig also allegedly said he'd be better off focusing on television. There's a glut of Aussie actors on American film and TV anyway. Maybe it needs to level off a bit.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 5, 2020 5:11 PM |
Brenton Thwaites was ever going to be a movie star because he doesn’t have a massive head. If you want to be career in the movies, you need a huge fucking head. Look at Gyllenhaal’s.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 5, 2020 5:35 PM |
R13 you had to write the word ‘bump,’ because you didn’t think your post itself would bump it?

I've been binging Titans on HBO Max. It's actually better than I thought I'd be, it pays a nice tribute to Wolfman/Perez-era Titans, it's well-shot and has a good soundtrack. Brenton is very nice to look at, not the greatest actor ever but he works as Dick Grayson. The woman who plays Kory is great.

Well, R59, you don't think that it's awful to not have a career succeed because you don't want to sleep with someone for a part? Ok, if he's a bad actor and sleeping with someone will get him a role, that is even worse. It's why we have JLaw and Chris Pine, amongst others.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 18, 2020 5:58 AM |
UGh, Titans is just awful.
They should've made it an adult animated series like the Justice League. It doesn't translate to live-action. The costumes are shit--especially Raven's, Wonder Girl's, and the Terminator's (I'm old skool). They don't even fly. Also, they crammed Rose, Connor, and Jericho into the same season. I can't imagine how they can pull off the Judas Contract or the Tamaran struggle with Komand'r.

Killer legs, though. But so round shouldered.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 19, 2020 12:46 AM |
He did a few blockbusters like that one with Gerard Butler and they were all shit.
He did a few cheap horror flicks and sci-fi flicks like that one with Laurence Fishburne and they were all shit.
He did a Lifetime movie and it was shit.
The only halfway decent movie he did was Son of a Gun with Ewan McGregor (in which he got his ass out in a prison scene) but nobody saw it which is the fate of 99% of Australian movies.
He's not all white and he can't pass for half American black either so that makes him difficult to cast in movies where there is often a family relationship involved.
If he'd stayed in Australia he would have gotten more roles because he does indeed look part Aboriginal and so he would be easy to cast as, say, Aaron Pederson's son or just as someone in general with a bit of Abo in them.

R67 He looks half white, half Aboriginal. Aboriginals do not look African American. Just as African Americans don't look Jamaican. Different skin tone. Different features.
Here's a photo of Aaron Pedersen who is a well-known Australian actor who is half Aboriginal. Brenton could easily be cast as his son in a movie or show.
If you tried to cast Brenton as the bi-racial son of, say, Samuel L. Jackson you'd be laughed out of town.

It's not really a Berlanti show like Berlanti's CW DC shows which are all more or less crap. Titans has way higher production values and that includes pretty much everything from writing to cinematography to directing. No Brenton in this clip but it's one of my favorite scenes from the show, especially with that soundtrack since it always reminds me of my childhood.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 19, 2020 1:42 AM |
He doesn't look biracial to me, at least not directly. DNA is a strange beast; maybe his olive skin is a throwback to an ancestor in antiquity, yeah? I believe that he's of English, Scottish and Irish descent like a lot of Australians. There could be a million reasons his skin is like that. Maybe he likes to tan.

But what I think is interesting about his look is that you really can't tell what he is but he could pass as many things. Latino, Italian, half black. I've seen a lot of Half Asians who have a similar look. Instead of it being a positive, it seems to have stalled his career. People don't know what to make of him so he's in a netherworld.

Why do you think that is, and how does that impact Brenton?
by Anonymous | reply 123 | December 22, 2020 4:46 AM |
It's purely a sexist thing as the straight guys who run the studios and networks have fetishes about ethnic looking women, especially those who are half Asian like Kristen Kreuk. Leading men generally look either or. When you have someone like Thwaites in a romantic lead, then it becomes a question as to his ethnicity with his leading lady.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | December 22, 2020 5:05 AM |
That would explain why so many black leading actresses are actually mixed or light-skinned (Halle Berry, Tessa Thompson, Zazie Beetz, Zoe Kravitz, Zoe Saldana, Rosario Dawson, Thandie Newton) while most black leading actors are mono-racial (Denzel Washington, Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan, Don Cheadle, John David Washington)

Is it the ambiguity in Brenton's racial makeup that causes hesitancy in hiring him, or is it because he's not fully white?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | December 22, 2020 5:21 AM |
Serious question R126. When you see him, what do you think his ethnicity is? I think it makes him interesting looking but it creates questions when you cast him.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | December 22, 2020 5:46 AM |
I'm not sure, R127. The first time I saw him I thought he might Middle Eastern/Arabic, Italian or Hispanic of some sort. I never would've thought Australian or of English descent.
Still my question remains "Is it the ambiguity in Brenton's racial makeup that causes hesitancy in hiring him, or is it because he's not fully white?" Or is it both?
by Anonymous | reply 128 | December 22, 2020 5:55 AM |
Or maybe we do not give a fuck about him
by Anonymous | reply 129 | December 22, 2020 11:15 AM |
I honestly don't believe that he's anything but a white Australian with a tan. Who knows what ancestors he had in antiquity that gives him the ability to tan well. Some of his younger photos show him to be rather pale. Anything is possible, I guess, but I don't see it.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | December 22, 2020 2:37 PM |
R123 Most movies and TV shows include a family dynamic. It's much easier to cast people who look alike enough to pass for father and son or mother and daughter or brother and sister etc than it is to cast someone who looks vaguely ethnic and pair them up with someone who isn't. It's why some redheads like Nicole Kidman go blonde. They instantly become easier to cast.
R128 It's not about him not being fully white. It's about him not being fully anything. If he was fully white he could be cast as Richard Gere's son. If he was fully Hispanic he could be cast as Jennifer Lopez's son. If he was fully black he could be cast as Samuel L. Jackson's son. But he's not fully anything which makes him difficult to cast because now the filmmakers have to explain why he doesn't match his family members on the show or in the movie. Is he adopted? Is he a product of adultery? It's easier to just cast someone who matches the star than it is it rewrite the script and explain it.
R130 obviously isn't Australian and is just embarrassing himself at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | December 22, 2020 2:53 PM |
No, R131, I am not Australian. But you sound defensive and foolish right now. Most people do when they are confronted with valid opinions that challenge theirs.

I think he's cute and has a nice body. Yeah he has a racially ambiguous look but culturally he is an Australian. It says a lot about our society that people still need to put him into a box.
I think it's a given in post-colonial countries like Australia, New Zealand, The US and most of Latin America. That everyone is mixed.

It's been years since I watched Peggy Sue Got Married so I don't remembered Sofia Coppola in it. I do remember an interview Francis Ford Coppola did, however, where for some reason he mentioned casting a blonde person as an Italian in one of his films (Godfather Part III?) where he said something like "And blonde Italians do exist". I wondered why he had the need to even mention that.

[quote] so I don't remembered Sofia Coppola in it
Remember not remembered.

[quote] It says a lot about our society that people still need to put him into a box.
It says a lot about a certain few posters here who keep bringing up Brenton's race repeatedly. NO ONE ELSE gives a shit. For some reason his race and skin color has been debated here for years, and I still don't have a clue what the hell for. Is it some white supremacy thing? Or a black lives matter thing? No fucking idea. That said I very much doubt any black person would view him as one, which makes me think it's pure old racism that's keeping the debate alive.

What isn't, on DL? There's a significant contingent that's obsessed with sniffing out adjacency.

Love this pic a hidden photog caught of him with his Titans co-star!
We are talking major scandal here.

Remember when we all thought he was bisexual? What happened with that?
by Anonymous | reply 148 | December 25, 2020 7:39 AM |
Doesn't he have three children?
by Anonymous | reply 149 | December 25, 2020 7:50 AM |

Genetics is so fascinating. Look at r27. The brothers look nothing alike except their smiles.

r131 He could very well pass for a Brazilian guy, I've seen many Brazilians look like him. Or Mediterranean white, a Greek for example.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | December 31, 2020 5:18 AM |
^ Good point. A lot of Australians are of Mediterranean descent. The stereotype is all Aussies are Irish and English descent with pale skin, blond hair, freckles and blue eyes. But there is a sizable population of Australians of Greek, Spanish and Italian descent.

Maybe his family's milkman was an immigrant from the Mediterranean regions.

1) I've never heard of him (not that that means anything)
2) Is that Jeff Bridges in OPs photo?
3) From this photo it does look like he has 'broken out' or 'expanded'

R158, that is indeed Jeff Bridges. I think the name of the film is The Giver. Meryl Streep is also in it.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | January 1, 2021 5:40 AM |
Brenton is looking a bit plump in R158's photo. He's in between projects I guess, so it's okay.

Titans is such a god awful boring show. And I hate how all of the action scenes are filmed in the dark.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | January 1, 2021 9:04 PM |
I was tempted to watch it, but not for $2USD an episode. I like Brenton, but not that much.

[quote] Does Australian actor Brenton Thwaites go both ways? He certainly gave that impression in a recent interview with when he was asked what he looks for in a partner. ‘Male or female?’ he asked an interviewer for The Fix. The interviewer answered: ‘Both.’ Thwaites, whose films include Maleficent, The Giver, and Blue Lagoon: The Awakening, then replied: ‘They’re very different.’
And then he quickly got married to a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | January 10, 2021 12:09 AM |
Are they even married?
by Anonymous | reply 167 | January 10, 2021 7:41 PM |
What are we supposed to take from that statement, “Male or female; they’re very different?”.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | January 15, 2021 4:11 PM |
The tru is that his films haven’t been very good. GODS OF EGYPT is unwatchable, same with GHOSTS OF WAR.

Truth, not tru. Damned iPad.
